My own kids, all grown up, are great company to me now.They all seem to be content, and doing well in their lives. That makes me, as a parent happy. As I look back on my own summer with the family, all in good health, I remember the little things like, catching crabs, having picnics and of course when it was especially hot, water fights!!!! I gave as good as I got, I may be older, but I am definitely not over the hill. Buttercrane and Newry City SureStart launch new Services for Mums Buttercrane have made a major investment in their services for mothers of young children in collaboration with local early year’s experts in Newry City Sure Start. Buttercrane consulted with early years experts at Newry City Sure Start and surveyed hundreds of customers to access what was important to young mums and breastfeeding mothers as part of an £100k+ upgrade of their Bathroom facilities and Mother and Baby room. Centre manager Peter Murray commented: “As a large percentage of our customers are parents and families, we want to provide a comfortable and stress free experience during their visit to Buttercrane. We have invested in our services to provide high quality facilities for mums to feed, change, warm bottles and food for their babies and to entertain siblings while they do so.
“I believe, with the upgrade to both the washrooms and Mother and Baby room we have created facilities of the very highest quality - I’d even suggest, the best to be found in any shopping centre in Ireland.” Anne Rice Project Manager said she was delighted that she and her colleague Adele Toal were asked to assist with the refurbishment in an advisory role. “Parenting is one of the most rewarding yet challenging roles we can take on. It is great such a prominent business in the city recognises this and is willing to make an investment and make

Gather all the ends of the paper to the neck of the wine bottle.
Hold on to the gathered paper with 1 hand while you wrap a ribbon around the neck of the bottle to secure it. Leave the top of the bottle exposed and tie the ribbon in a knot. Use extra pieces of ribbon to tie on to the securing ribbon, then run your scissor blades down the length of the ribbon to make it curl. For a more elaborate wine bottle wrap, get creative and use multiple sheets of tissue paper, or a combination of tissue paper and cellophane.

Our Vision is a society accessible to all. Our Mission is to provide exceptional services that support children and adults with disabilities to participate in all aspects of community life. The range of short break services includes – Outlook Provided across NI and promotes the inclusion of disabled children into mainstream activities in their local community by providing the extra support necessary. They are delivered at a time to suit the family. Inreach A specialised service provided within the Belfast area which provides families of children with complex needs with a short break. TRANSITION The Transition Service offers a 2 year programme that empowers young disabled people to achieve their aspirations and goals on leaving school. When a young person enters their final year at school a dedicated Transitions Worker will support them to explore their options. YOUTH MATTERS Provides a range of activities that promote confidence and self-esteem and build on the young person’s capacity to access local community provision. We also work in partnership with local recreational and
community providers to improve access to positive activities such as mainstream youth services, inclusive sports, leisure opportunities, drama and the arts. TRAINING & EMPLOYMENT SERVICES Many people with disabilities face challenges in accessing and participating in employment and training. To help tackle these barriers Cedar offers a range of services across Northern Ireland to help individuals gain qualifications and develop the skills required to find a job or to get involved in the community. Working together with individuals, their families, and other professionals, we build links with training providers, colleges and support services. BRAIN INJURY SERVICES At Cedar we are introduced to people who have survived Brain Injury due to a range of sudden and unexpected events, such as road accident, assault or stroke. The Cedar Brain Injury Services Team aims to enable people surviving Brain Injury to achieve their personal goals for returning to work, gaining qualifications and having an active life. Have a mole check. Do a DIY exam by getting your partner to photograph your moles every six months and report changes in size, shape or colour to your GP. Your map to a Better back. Backache costs the NHS over £1 billion a year and 90% of us will suffer from it as some point. Here’s what can go wrong, and how to treat it when it does. WHIPLASH When your head is jolted suddenly, the neck and upper back may be injured, leading to pain, stiffness and headaches. CAUSES; Car accidents are the most common, but a fall or a blow to the head will trigger it, too. TREATMENT; If your neck still hurts a month after the injury, see your doctor . You may need to combine painkillers ibuprofen and paracetamol can be safely taken together to provide greater pain relief.
SLIPPED DISC This is where cartilage between the vertebrae splits and the gel inside leaks. Pressure is then put on the sciatic nerve, leading to numbness/tingling in the legs and pain in the lower back. CAUSES; Age and injury can be factors, with 30 to 50 year olds most at risk. TREATMENT; If the pain is severe your doctor may prescribe diazepam to relax the muscles, physiotherapy and in rare cases surgery. It’s important to stay active if you have a slipped disc gentle exercise like walking and swimming actually relieves pain and helps your back to heal.
SCIATICA Any kind of pain affecting the sciatic nerve (the long nerve that runs from the back of your pelvis to your feet). CAUSES; A slipped disc or muscle injury can both be triggers, but sometimes there’s no obvious source
4 STEPS... TOWARD GOOD POSTURE
You can improve your posture—and head off back pain—by practicing some imagery and a few easy exercises. • 1
Imagery. Think of a straight line passing through your body from ceiling to floor (your ears, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles should be even and line up vertically). Now imagine that a strong cord attached to your breastbone is pulling your chest and rib cage upward, making you taller. Try to hold your pelvis level — don’t allow the lower back to sway. Think of stretching your head toward the ceiling, increasing the space between your rib cage and pelvis. Picture yourself as a ballerina or ice skater rather than a soldier at attention.

Shoulder blade squeeze. Sit up straight in a chair with your hands resting on your thighs. Keep your shoulders down and your chin level. Slowly draw your shoulders back and squeeze your shoulder blades together. Hold for a count of five; relax. Repeat three or four times.

Upper-body stretch. Stand facing a corner with your arms raised, hands flat against the walls, elbows at shoulder height. Place one foot ahead of the other. Bending your forward knee, exhale as you lean your body toward the corner. Keep your back straight and your chest and head up. You should feel a nice stretch across your chest. Hold this position for 20–30 seconds. Relax.

Arm-across-chest stretch. Raise your right arm to shoulder level in front of you and bend the arm at the elbow, keeping the forearm parallel to the floor. Grasp the right elbow with your left hand and gently pull it across your chest so that you feel a stretch in the upper arm and shoulder on the right side. Hold for 20 seconds; relax both arms. Repeat to the other side. Repeat three times on each side. Practice these imagery and posture exercises throughout the day. You might try to find a good trigger to help you remember, such as doing one or more of them when you get up from your desk, or right before scheduled breaks and lunch. Soon it will become a habit.
TREATMENT; Try Painkillers or apply a hot water bottle or pack of frozen peas. If your pain lasts longer than six weeks, affects your sleep or is accompanied by weight loss, visit your GP
NECK STRAIN This happens when the soft tissue or muscles in the neck or upper back are damaged. CAUSES; Poor posture, carrying a heavy shoulder bag, or tension in the neck caused by stress. TREATMENT; This type of pain usually heals on its own and can easily be managed with painkillers like ibuprofen, paracetamol and asprin say most GP’s. Ibuprofen in particular contains an ainti-inflammatory agent that’s great for dealing with muscle strain.
PINCHED NERVES. Your spine is made up of 24 vertebrae and when the structure of these changes, it’s possible for a nerve to become trapped. Strangely, the pain is often felt in your arms or legs. CAUSES; Sleeping in an awkward position or repetitive movement like lifting or gardening. TREATMENT; Avoid activity that aggravates the problem. Resting and lying down as much as possible should ease the pain. It should eventually go away after a few days or weeks. As it heals you may want to use topical ibuprofen gel to ease the pain.
STENOSIS When pressure is put on the spinal column, the nerve impulses are interrupted, triggering weakness, numbness and pain in your legs, but often not in the back. CAUSES; Conditions like arthritis and a slipped disc. TREATMENT; You’ll need to visit your GP who may prescribe stronger painkillers like Voltarol. (Not prescribed to those with blood pressure problems) physiotherapy, steroid injections or even alternative therapies like acupuncture or chiropractic treatments.

Will it suit your skin? If you want younger-looking skin, then vitamin A is for you. Older formulations, which are only available on prescription, can sometimes cause side effects, such as irritation, peeling and redness, but newer and over the counter formulas generally will not cause any irritation to your skin. They may take a bit longer to work, but eventually you should see the same results as prescription strength products.
Will it suit your skin? The creamy consistency will ;help dry skin look ;more hydrated. But not all ~BB creams are the same; some are designed to give your skin a matt texture, which is beneficial if you suffer from oily breakouts; others have soothing properties, and then there are ones that will boost the radiance of your skin. -BB creams are available in limited number of shades – great for paler and medium skin tones, but not so for dark skin as they may make you look ashen.

Making poms in this way takes a little bit longer, however you can easily customise the size of your pom to suit your requirements by simply altering the diameter of the cardboard circles you cut out You will need: •....Wool/yarn •....Cardboard •....Pencil •....Scissors
Pretty Pots. Use whatever jars you have lying around, Le Parfait jars have neat rims and stylish lettering on them, but any jar will work well. Clean them out thoroughly, then make sure they’re completely dry.
You will need: •....Large glass jars •....Pain •....Paintbrush •....Paper towel •....Newspaper •....Varnish.
Pour a little paint into the bottom of the jar and swish around. Use a paintbrush to ensure you cover every area inside the jar. Remove any excess paint with a paper towel and ensure the rim is clean. Leave to dry on the newspaper. If you’re not using an oil-based paint, add a final coat of varnish so you can fill your vase with water. Hold the jar up to the window – if you can see streaks you need to add another layer of paint. Add water, your favourite flowers and display.

Cut out two cardboard circles using a circular object as a template (jars and mugs make great templates) with a hole in the middle of each so that you end up with a ‘ring’ shape.

You will need:
Hold both the cardboard circles tightly together, and wind your wool / yarn evenly and firmly around the edge.
Continue winding the wool / yarn around the circles until the central hole is nearly full. Using the scissors, carefully snip the wound wool/yarn between the two cardboard circles and continue all the way around until all the wool / yarn has been cut.
Thread a length of wool/yarn around the centre of the pom, between the two circles of cardboard, then tie tightly to secure. Do not cut off any of the excess wool / yarn.

Remove the card from your pom by using your scissors to snip into the card, and pull apart to separate.
Trim your pom to give it even edges.
Hints and Tips The larger the diameter of your circle the larger the pom will be, and the more wool you will need to allow for the making. A circle with an 8 cm diameter is a good size to begin with, this dimension can then be adjusted accordingly dependent on the size pom needed in future. www.familiesfirst-uk.com

Cut out your felt mouse. You will need 2 x body, 2 x arms, 2 x leg in one colour and, in a contrasting colour, 2 x ear. The teddy will also need to be cut out 2 x body and 2 x ear – all in the same colour.

Sew the face on the mouse, then sew a stitch in the base of each ear, so that they curl inwards. Position the ears, legs and arms in between the two body pieces and pin in place. Sew all the way two body pieces and pin in place. Sew all the way around, leaving a space at the side. Push a small bit of cotton wool inside, then sew up the space.

Repeat for the teddy bear. Thread 3-4 strands of cotton into a needle and sew onto the back to make the mouse’s tail. Cut up rectangles of felt for the sheet and blanket. ccording to *Dr Miriam Stoppard, as a nation, we are poor swimmers. In the UK one in five adults can’t swim and 400 people drown each year. Startling, I know, but it does get worse. A recent report by the Amateur Swimming Association showed that one in three children can’t swim 25 yards by the time they leave primary school. Which means that every summer 200,000 children aged 11 are vulnerable to drowning.

The National Curriculum stipulates that children should be able to pass the 25m test by the time they reach the age of 11. However, four out of ten schools don’t even offer swimming lessons to pupils. But, as parents we must take some responsibility. GETTING CREATIVE TO TACKLE BULLYING Children and young people across Northern Ireland are being encouraged to use their creativity and take part in this year’s anti-bullying art and creative writing competition. The deadline for entries is Friday 10 October 2014. The creative competition is one of the many exciting initiatives taking place in the lead up to Anti-Bullying Week 2014 (17-21 November 2014). This year’s theme is ‘Together we will make a difference – END BULLYING NOW!’ and will explore our collective role in tackling bullying in our schools and in our communities. Anti-Bullying Week, which is celebrating its tenth year, is co-ordinated by the Northern Ireland Anti-Bullying Forum (NIABF) and supported by Translink. GET INVOLVED Urging everyone to get involved in this year’s Anti-Bullying Week, Lee Kane, NIABF’s Regional Anti-Bullying Coordinator said: “Over the course of the last five years we have integrated a creative competition for young people into Anti-Bullying Week. The competition provides a channel for individuals to tell a story or convey their views on how bullying should be tackled. Last year there were over 1750 entries from young people right across Northern Ireland. “A range of stories and art works were used in displays throughout Anti-Bullying Week and they were studied and reviewed by other young people. There is a lot of value in peer to peer sharing of this nature and
for this reason we are encouraging young people to get creative and share their ideas.” Lee adds: “Bullying can happen anywhere and to anyone, in lots of different ways. It could be in a physical place, such as the playground, the classroom, the lunch room or in the park. Or, it might take place in the cyber world, on social networking websites, through online games or by text message. No matter where or how it happens, we all have a responsibility to make it stop. “We’re asking young people to think about where bullying happens, how it happens and the role we all play in tackling it. Think about who is involved, what they can do and why we all have a responsibility to END BULLYING NOW.” SUPPORT Anti-Bullying Week is once again supported by Translink. Welcoming the launch of the creative competition Translink’s Ursula Kelleher, said : “This year’s theme encourages everyone to work together to end bullying and as the leading provider of school transport in Northern Ireland, Translink is pleased to join forces with the Northern Ireland AntiBullying Forum to tackle this serious issue. “The safety and welfare of pupils travelling

Chicken Roman Josh Curry (serves 2) ◆ marinate chicken in yoghurt & turmeric for a 1/2 hour. ◆ now in a dry hot pan fry cloves,cinnamon & pap performs for a few seconds until brown. ◆ now add shallot.garlic & ginger fry until soft,add powdered spices now cook another few seconds. ◆ Add lamb mix,tomato purée & stock bring to a gentle boil. ◆ now simmer over a low heat for 1 hour 15 minutes. ◆ Season well ,add cream & chopped coriander.

ON Takes about 50 mins. Preheat oven to 200C (180 fan) mark 6.. Toss together 1 roughly chopped red onion, 2 crushed garlic cloves, 1 roughly chopped ripe tomato with 2tbs olive oil and plenty of seasoning in a large roasting tray. Roast for 30 min. Scrape the roasted vegetables into a blender and whiz until smooth. Transfer to a large saucepan and mix together with 1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes 2tbsp balsamic vinegar, 1 tsp caster sugar and a large handful roughly chopped fresh basil. Bring to the boil, turn down and simmer for 15 min. Season well to taste, adding some extra sugar if you like. Stir through a little more fresh basil and serve immediately with cooked pasta. Per serving: 119cals, 6g fat (1g saturates), 12g carbs (11g total sugars), 3g protein, 3g fibre.

Here’s how to give your children a head start. Talk about money. Children should learn money has a value so they understand that once you spend it, it’s gone. Families have a crucial role to play in financial education. Learning to read – we do that at school but it needs to be reinforced at home. Recent research has shown our financial habits in adulthood are set by the age of just seven, so it is important that parents start passing on good money advice from a young age.

If you add a couple of drops of essential oil to the cardboard centre of your toilet roll, it acts as a fab room fragrance. I use old doorknobs as a towel racks in the bathroom. I found them at a jumble sale for a couple of pennies and used super strength glue to attach them to the wall – they look really different! I had an old metal watering can that had some holes in the bottom. I was about to throw it out and then I thought, why don’t I use it as a flower pot? Some items were not available in all the stores, but we have done our best to have as near to it as we can.
Here at families first we take the cost of living very seriously, so we put together a typical basked of everyday things, there might have been more we should have added, you might have liked other brands, but, we made a list and compared, as near to it as we could like for like, to really see what supermarket is the cheapest, at the time of going to print

Tips for a safer Ghosties and ghoulies, things that go bump in the night, trick or treat – these are things that should be fun for all the family, but are you prepared for a safe event? Here are some useful safety and first aid guidelines from St John Ambulance (NI). Pumpkin lanterns
Fancy dress
Carving pumpkins is a favourite pastime but can be fraught with danger. The skins are often hard and required sharp knives, so leave the carving to adults, with the youngsters scooping out the flesh. (Don’t discard the flesh, it makes wonderful soup!)
Children particularly like dressing up for Halloween but you need to ensure that costumes are of a suitable fit. Ill-fitting costumes can lead to slips, trips and falls, the most common cause of accidents. Minor cuts and grazes caused by falls should be treated as above although you may wish to clean the wound under cold water to remove any loose dirt or grit.
Minor cuts are easily treated by applying direct pressure to the wound and covering it with a plaster. The wound will heal itself in a few days. To treat more serious cuts you should apply direct pressure to the wound, ideally using a sterile dressing or a clean, none-fluffy pad. Raising the injured part above the level of the heart will help to reduce the blood loss. Be aware that the casualty could be suffering from shock, so help them to lie down and raise their legs. Protect them from cold by covering them with a blanket or coat and call for help by ringing either 999 or 112. Cover the wound with a firm, sterile dressing. If blood seeps through the dressing, apply a second one on top of the first. If this does not stop the bleeding, remove both dressings and apply new ones, ensuring that pressure is applied directly over the point of bleeding.
Take care when using candles in the lanterns. Minor burns are extremely painful but generally heal naturally if appropriate first aid is given quickly. To treat a burn, first remove any constricting items, e.g. rings and watches. Cool the burn under cold, running water for ten minutes or until the pain is relieved. Cover the burn with non-stick material or a sterile dressing. Kitchen film is ideal to cover burns, but don’t wrap film around the limb because the tissues swell. Caution – DO NOT burst blisters; apply adhesive dressings; ointments or fats. If the casualty is a child or you are concerned about the casualty’s condition, seek medical help.

Trips and falls may result in soft tissue or bone injury which requires further treatment. Sprains and strains should be treated using what is known as the RICE procedure. Rest the injured limb by getting the casualty to sit or lie down with the part raised. Cool the area by applying an ice pack or cold compress. A bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel is ideal for this. Provide comfortable support by wrapping the injured part in soft padding extending above and below the injury. Elevate the injured part to minimise bruising and swelling. If the casualty is in severe pain or

unable to use the injured part, seek medical help. As human beings do not have x-ray vision we can never be sure if a bone is not broken. Severe pain, swelling, bruising and an inability to put pressure onto a limb could be an indication of an underlying fracture. If these symptoms are present you should immobilise the limb in a position that is most comfortable for the casualty and arrange transport to the nearest accident and emergency department.

Trick or treat Children get excited when going from door to door, often looking for their favourite sweets as treats. Small sweets particularly can cause choking in both children and
abdomen. Clench your fist and place it between the navel and the bottom of the breastbone. Grasp your fist and give up to five abdominal thrusts by pulling inwards and upwards. If the obstruction has still not cleared, repeat the back blows and abdominal thrusts up to three times, checking the mouth each time.
General safety advice When children are out during the hours of darkness ensure that they can be seen. Light coloured costumes or reflective bands reduces the risk of passing motorists failing to see them. Give them a torch to carry and warn them of the dangers of stepping off the footpath. Remind children that they should not talk to strangers or enter houses of people that they do not know. Beware of unwrapped or home-made sweets.
adults. The first aid treatment for choking is the same for both adults and children. If the casualty is breathing encourage them to cough and remove any obvious obstruction from the mouth. DO NOT place a finger into the mouth to try to ‘sweep’ an obstruction clear as this may have the opposite effect and push the obstruction further down the throat. If the casualty cannot speak or stops coughing, carry out back blows. Give up to five sharp blows between the shoulder blades using the heel of your hand. If back blows fail to clear the obstruction stand behind the casualty and put both arms around the upper part of their

A heart surgeon vs a cardiologist. Cardiologist do investigations for heart problems, including ECGs and also tests using dye and X-rays to check for blood flow in the coronary arteries. They are also the doctors that insert stents (tiny metal coils) into the coronary arteries to help keep them open. But if you need your chest opened up, for example, for a bypass operation, then the cardiologist will refer you on to a heart surgeon.
UNDERSTAND HOSPITAL HIERARCHY All doctors in hospitals wear identity labels, but do you know what they really mean? FOUNDATION YEARS 1 AND 2 (SHORTHAND IS (F1 AND F2)
They have studied for five or six years in medical school, qualified as doctors and are in their first or second year in hospital. What they do: These are the doctors you are most likely to encounter when you’re admitted. They’ll take a medical history and do a basic examination, plus organise – and often take – blood needed for tests.
THE SPECIALIST REGISTRARS (SHORTHAND IS SPR)
In hospital specialities, doctors work through eight levels of training in the specialist registrar grade, in order to be able to apply for a consultant post. Occasionally, a level will take a whole year: sometimes a doctor will progress through two levels in one year. This means that some SpRs are very junior, while others are senior and almost at consultant level. What they do: SpRs help out in hospital clinics. If you’re seen initially by a junior SpR, it’s likely that they will cross-check with a more senior doctor before any decisions are taken, while senior SpRs have the expertise to make decisions on their own. SpRs also help out the F1 and F2 year doctors on the wards.
CONSULTANT
The most senior grade. Most doctors are in their mid to late thirties before they reach this level. What they do: You’re most likely to encounter a consultant in an outpatient clinic, though because of sheer numbers of patients, they cannot see everyone, so they’re more likely to see new patients while those visiting as a ‘follow up’ are more likely to be seen by a junior member of the team. Most also do a daily round of checking on the inpatients under their care on the wards. As associate specialist is not a training grade, but rather someone who has done some specialist training, but does not wish to have the responsibility of being a consultant. Many work part-time. Senior ones can be extremely knowledgeable.
SPECIALIST NURSES.
In many clinics there are also specialist nurses, the most senior of whom are ‘nurse consultants’. What they do: Depending on their grade, specialist nurses will either tend to do tests and follow-up-visits or, in the case of nurse consultants, see patients at their first visit. Though often incredibly knowledgeable, they have a nursing rather than a medical qualification.

A gastroenterologists vs a colorectal surgeon A gastroenterologist will usually specialise in either the top – oesophagus, stomach and upper part of the intestine – or the large bowel and rectum. They do tests including blood tests, and also camera work, looking inside either the top or the lower part of the bowel but, in addition, can do operations, such as dealing with haemorrhoids, or removing parts of the bowel. If you have abdominal pain or severe indigestion, for which your GP can’t find a cause, then your GP is likely to refer you initially to a gastroenterologist. If you’re then found to need some form of surgery, for example, removal of your gall bladder, then you will be referred on to a gastrointestinal surgeon. But if your GP has already found that the cause of your pain is gallstones, then you will be referred directly, to a surgeon. An obstetrician vs gynaecologist Obstetricians specialise in the care of pregnant women, and delivering babies, while gynaecologists specialise in treating problems of the female pelvic organs – the womb, ovaries and fallopian tubes. During the early SpR years, doctors will do both, but then later will specialise in a particular field. A Physician vs a surgeon Surgeons are trained to do operations in their particular speciality, for instance
orthopaedics, or arteries and veins (vascular surgeons). Doctors also further specialise within their chosen speciality, so, for example, and orthopaedic surgeon will specialise in the shoulders or the wrists, the hips or the feet. Cardiothoracic surgeons specialise in either the heart or the lungs. And gynaecologists may specialise in bladder problems (urogynaecologists) or gynaecological cancers. Physicians, on the other hand, have no training in surgery, but rather have training in doing tests and investigations in their chosen field. They usually have ‘ist’ in their title – for example, a cardiologist, and endocrinologist or a gastroenterologist. Often a patient is referred initially to a physician, who will do any tests you require. If you then require surgery, you’ll be referred on to a surgeon.

‘ist’ at the end of a job title is also used by some healthcare professionals who are not medically qualified, for example, a podiatrist, who can deaa with minor food conditions, or a physiotherapist. Radiologist vs a radiographer. A radiologist is a medically qualified doctor who specialises in looking at images, including X-rays, CT scans and MRIs “Interventional radiologists” have

Increasingly, investigations are done using tiny cameras, which are passed into the body. The names of these usually end in “oscopy” – for example, gastroscopy, looking in the stomach, or cystoscopy, looking in the bladder. Who does these procedures depends on the part of the body – some are done physicians, others by surgeons, and some by radiologists, who are specialists in working with imaging techniques, including MRI and ultrasound, as well as X-rays.

A clinical psychologist vs a psychiatrist. Psychiatrists who specialise in disorders of the mind, and can prescribe medicines. Clinical psychologists, on the other hand, have done several years’ training in disorders of the mind, but are not medically qualified, and cannot prescribe. They have often done more training in helping patients with talking therapies, for example, cognitive behaviour therapy, than psychiatrists.
The Mr vs Dr confusion. In surgical specialties, a doctor is allowed to call themselves Mr (or Miss or Mrs) when they have passed the specialist exam of their royal college. This exam is taken during the SpR years and, in fact, a doctor must have passed the exam in order to apply to become a consultant. So it’s not just surgical consultants that are called Mr/ Mrs/Miss – many senior SpRs in surgical specialities are often Mr/Miss/Mrs too. But this doesn’t happen in medical grades – their doctors stay addressed as Dr.
A podiatrist vs chiropodist. Podiatrists are foot specialists who treat foot problems such as corns, verrucas and thickened nails. They are not medically qualified, but some can perform minor operations on feet, such as straightening bunions (though many orthopaedic surgeons feel this is not good practice, and that foot operations should only be performed by medically qualified surgeons). Podiatry is the same as chiropody – there is no difference between the two. Referral pathways: choose and book. GPs now have set guidelines about referring patients to hospital. Often, a series of tests has to be completed before the referral can be done. In some areas, all

And Finally.......... Who looks at the whole picture? The age of the “general physician” – a doctor who could look at the whole body – is sadly long gone. There only “generalists” now are GPs. This can mean that if you have vague symptoms, which your GP is unable to pinpoint, you may get sent to several different specialists, for example an endocrinologist, who specialises in hormone disorders, or a haematologist, who specialises in blood problems, before you finally get the right treatment. However, any good specialist should take a “holistic” approach, which means they should take all your symptoms into account, not just those in their narrow field.
