Not for Girls, Not for Boys Polarn O. Pyret make clothes for children
Scandinavians are renowned for their functional design and progressive social attitudes. The top four ranking countries for gender equality are all Scandinavian. How does this translate into clothing for babies and children? Leading childrenswear brand, Polarn O. Pyret of Sweden, have been designing unisex clothing for over 40 years with a philosophy to ‘let children be children’. Famous for their classic stripes in navy and red, Polarn O. Pyret’s head designer Karina Lundell states “There is no difference in the body-shape of girls and boys until around age 12 years. So we design most of our clothing to be worn by children, not just boys or girls. What colour they choose is up to them.” Unisex clothing is easier to hand down and PO.P is renowned for durability, the clothes are made to be worn by as many children as possible, not just one. The cost-per-wear value goes up and impact on the environment goes down. Don’t forget to use your exclusive POLARN O. Why drumming together is so powerful Drumming activates the caudate nucleus, which triggers warm, pro-social feelings towards other people. Drumming attachment play between parent and child is hugely popular at any age. When you look at what drumming together (not a child drumming on her own) does to the brain
it’s not hard to see why – it has been shown to... • Induce relaxation • Enhance theta-wave patterns in the brain • Lower blood pressure • Reduce stress • Trigger the release of calming chemicals • Boost the immune system • Increase cancer-killing cells.

Tough Day at the Home Office? Try Activities That Release Well-Being Brain Chemicals by Margot Sunderland
I
t’s important to acknowledge when things are not good between you and your child. Maybe you had a disagreement or work is stressful, so you are too sharp with your child or too emotionally unavailable. There might be just too many stress hormones floating about, making one or both of you irritated, “shouty”, and/or stressed. If you start to think “brain biochemically” you’ll know that you have the power to change your biochemical state in support of your relationship with your child. By opting for an activity that triggers well-being chemicals you can change your mood and/or your child’s, healing any relationship rupture. Pick activities that support you both biochemically – those that lower too high stress hormone levels and trigger the release of oxytocin and opioids.
Offer to give your child a foot massage or back rub Parents wanting the best relationship should carry on giving their child massage way past the baby-massage stage. Research at the University of Virginia, USA, found that even holding hands with someone you love can stop the stressful reaction in your brain. It has also been shown that massage triggers oxytocin, which not only reduces anxiety and fear, but also builds a person’s desire to be near to and relate to others.
area (perhaps in a shed or garage). Add extra light-up toys to it. Keep a sensory room for special mummy-me or daddy-me time only, as that way it keeps its specialness; novelty triggers production of the reward chemical dopamine.
Go for an outing together in a green space
Mental fatigue from stressful family life and urban environments can be calmed by venturing with your child into green spaces, such as the park or out into the country. If it’s summer, go for a special daddy-me or mummy-me picnic. Research has revealed improvements in a child’s attention and concentration levels after being in nature for only 20 minutes. Green-play settings were found to be as good as, or better than, medication for children with ADHD even after as little as 20 minutes’ exposure. There is also evidence that a walk together in green space: • Calms the body (lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels for example) and lowers cortisol levels. • Impacts positively on brainwave patterns, bringing about higher meditative states and lower frustration levels. • Calms the bodily arousal system. • Is associated with a lower frequency of stress symptoms including digestive illnesses and headaches. Margot Sunderland is Director of Education and Training at the Centre for Child Mental Health London, Honorary Visiting Fellow at London Metropolitan University, and a child psychotherapist with over thirty years’ experience of working with children and families. Her famous bestseller, What Every Parent Needs to Know, remains the greatest work on what science can teach us about parenting. In this new edition, published by Dorling Kindersley July 2016 at £16.99, she shares a scientifically informed secure base for childrearing practices and empowers parents to make informed choices for their children.
Go in warm water together
Those sensory nerves in the skin are also stimulated by heat. Have a bath together or, if your child is over five years old, you could try a jacuzzi or hot tub provide it’s set at a safe temperature. It makes me cross that hotel and public pools are usually for “adults only”; they just need to turn the temperature down to 36-37C (96.8F-98.6F) to allow children access. Hot tubs and jacuzzis are never safe for under fives.
Try a sensory room or tent
Sensory rooms or tents are perfect for the release of wellbeing chemicals in your and your child’s brains. These small, dark spaces have beautiful soft lighting and calming music – the lights and music activate oxytocin. You can buy them (have a look on the internet) or make your own by throwing a sheet of black-out material over a few chairs. Play in a sensory room stimulates well-being chemicals. If you have room for one, set it up away from the normal play

Exercise is your best friend
Even if the weather’s dreadful, make sure your kids have exercise every day. It keeps them fit and helps with a good night’s sleep. The best time is just after school.
Plan your mornings
Mornings are bad times! Everyone is tired and cranky so having a routine can help. Get up 15 minutes before the kids to get some ‘me time’. Ban games, X-Boxes and the TV in the morning as time can slip away.
Be prepared
Getting things prepared the night before can help immensely with the morning rush, so get lunchboxes made and breakfast things out the night before.
Have rules
Make sure that school bags, shoes and coats go in a specific place so that there is no frantic searching in the morning.
Make sure they know their routine too
Getting your child into a good routine
Having a planner is a great help to avoid missing tutors and play dates. A big calendar on the fridge means everyone can see what’s happening and when.
Why routines work
By Sally J. Hall School days and dark mornings can play havoc with your child’s routine. Here’s how to keep them happy - and get them up on time! As you get into the autumn and winter school term, it can be difficult to cope with changing weather and dull days. Getting your child settled into a good routine is essential if you are going to ensure they get enough sleep and are able to get up on time for school.
Children respond really well to a routine so you’ll thank yourself when they adapt to doing the right things at the right time each day. Have breakfast and dinner at set times, bedtime must be absolutely set in stone and homework should have appointed times too. Sally is a writer and editor who has written for all the main parenting titles as well as The Independent and The Mail. She is author of Eco Baby and contributing author to Watch My Baby Grow (Dorling Kindersley).

The benefits of after school clubs & classes Whether or not you think you may be raising the next Picasso or David Beckham, there’s no doubting the pluses of after school clubs. While finances may not permit your little ones being involved in different activities every night of the week, there’s no doubt that a couple of well-chosen clubs can be great for giving your child an insight into areas that the school curriculum doesn’t cover.
So, why are clubs so important?
Team sports like football, rugby, and netball are not only brilliant for keeping kids active but also helping them learn team work where they can begin to appreciate what’s good for the whole team, rather than just thinking of themselves. Competitive sports are also great for learning difficult life lessons like being a gracious winner - and loser. However, if you’re on the lookout for team building clubs with a less competitive edge, you could consider Brownies and Scouts – kids love them! Meanwhile, learning a musical instrument is ideal for discovering the art of practice, patience and persistence. Drama and language clubs are perfect for shy kids who learn to find their voice, while ballet and dance is suited for kids to learn discipline and self-expression.
Don’t forget the fun factor!
The list is endless. There are clubs for almost anything you can imagine. However, new skills, team work and confidence building aside, the most important thing to think about when deciding which club to choose is the fun factor. www.enjoy-a-ball.com www.rugbytots.co.uk www.girlguiding.org.uk www.scouts.org.uk

Childhood vaccine offers best defence against flu Even the healthiest of children can become seriously ill with flu. This is the third year of the childhood immunisation programme, which is being offered every year to approximately 550,000 children across Scotland. The vaccine is the best defence against flu and is given as a quick and painless nasal (nose) spray. Children aged between 2 and 5 and not yet in school will be offered the vaccine at their GP practice from October, and parents who want their child to be immunised are being encouraged to make an appointment with their GP. Primary school children are being offered the vaccine at school, and consent letters will be sent to parents in their child’s school bag. The vaccination programme has commenced in schools across Scotland. Once fully implemented it’s estimated that the extension of the programme will save an additional 200 lives per year, and reduce the number of people being admitted to hospital for flu by over 1,100 per year. To help protect your 2 to 5 year old child who is not yet at school make an appointment with your GP. Find out more about the flu vaccine for children at immunisationscotland.org.uk/childflu or call NHS inform on 0800 22 44 88.

Choosing an independent education for your child As a parent, it’s natural to want to give your child every opportunity to discover what they’re good at and what they love doing in a safe and supportive environment. Which is why in Scotland we are very fortunate. We have a wide range of firstrate independent schools to choose from. So whether you have a tech-loving future internet entrepreneur on your hands, or a child who craves hours of fresh air and exercise every day, Scotland’s independent schools can offer you the freedom to find the right educational environment for your son or daughter. You have a choice of: • Single sex or co-educational schools • Large and small schools in both urban and countryside settings • Day schools, boarding schools and those who offer both • Schools equipped to deal with Complex Additional Support Needs
A healthy and diverse mix of backgrounds
Scotland has always placed great value on education, and today more than 30,000 children and young people attend an independent school. Over 25% of pupils received financial assistance with fees in 2015-16, while nearly a third of boarders came from overseas. The healthy mix of abilities and backgrounds that abound are as varied as the personalities of the children themselves. Altogether making for a vibrant and modern community that mirrors the real world and will serve your child well for the future.
The independent school advantage
The schools’ reputation for academic excellence is an obvious attraction for many parents. Smaller pupil/teacher ratios and significant investment in modern, stimulating teaching facilities attracts the highest calibre of teaching staff capable of igniting a passion for the subjects they teach. Born digital natives, most children and young people today want to feel stretched, challenged and inspired by new technology. While the imposing architecture of some school buildings might give off an air of Hogwarts, once inside it’s definitely more ipad Air and the magic of cloud computing.
See for yourself
All schools welcome visits from prospective families throughout the year. Look out for details of Open Days on the school’s website, or alternatively ask for an appointment where staff will be delighted to show you round, give you a feel for life at the school and answer any questions you may have. For more information, advice and guidance on choosing an independent school in Scotland visit the Scottish Council of Independent Schools (SCIS) website at scis.org.uk.
When children are young we often wonder what the future will hold. Will they be musical? Will they be academic? Who will they choose as their friends? Scotland’s independent schools are set up to give your child every opportunity both inside and outside the classroom.

Moving from state to independent education In a recent One To One programme for BBC Radio 4, Datshiane Navanayagam wonders how much the transformative world of education influences where we end up. She spoke with the jazz musician and broadcaster Soweto Kinch about his experience of going to a private prep school and, later, an independent secondary. “It was a big culture shock, coming from a London state school”, he says. “Interestingly, I felt, and I still feel, that expectation was the crucial difference between the comps I went to and the private schools. I would say education is largely a reason of explaining where I am today. Another massive culture shock that people go through when they move from state school to private comps is this confidence, this kind of swagger”, he continues...
You’re entitled to talk and pontificate about politics, even though you’re only 16 years old. That confidence you don’t get imbibed with, or in my experience I wasn’t imbibed with in the state school system.”
Kelvinside Academy has a bright future in the hands of new headmaster Kelvinside Academy recently welcomed new rector Ian Munro who, at 34 years old, recently became the world’s youngest HMC school headmaster. “Although Kelvinside’s vision for the future must be bespoke, excellence in the classroom is non-negotiable. To engender a deep passion for learning and safeguard academic standards, we must involve students, staff, governors and parents in developing a shared vision of what excellent teaching and learning looks like. We must educate in the round. Intellectual curiosity, a passion for learning, critical thought, resilience and empathy are dispositions required by students to compete in the 21st Century, and I believe these are best engendered in open and collaborative classrooms where students are given real responsibility for their learning.“ The rector, who has previously taught at George Heriot’s and Gordonstoun schools added: “We do more than just prepare our pupils to pass exams.”
Nursery at The Glasgow Academy
“The sort of education that you get, the environment which encourages you to take a risk on an opinion and then back it up with fact as opposed to just regurgitate the facts. Even ‘though now I’m not doing anything overtly academic, now it’s the training and confidence that is coming in handy when interacting and discussing things in general. It’s equipped me with more confidence than I would have otherwise.” Hear the conversation in full on BBC Radio iPlayer.
