Step 2 Cut shapes for the bunny’s feet and hands out of the yellow felt; then cut larger ear shapes out of yellow felt and smaller ones from the white. Once they have dried a little, stick them on to the rear of where the face will be. Step 5 Finally, draw a rabbit’s face on the front of the egg with the pens and decorate with patterns as your child likes. 7-9 Competitions 10-11 Tips & advice 12-15 What’s on Highlights
Welcome to issue 62! As I am writing this, the snowdrops are valiantly battling against Jack Frost and I think they may be winning! Hopefully the warmer weather will bring some beautiful spring days – like the one last year on which we took this picture, playing hide-and-seek in the dunes on an Ayrshire beach. For the first time I have included an Editor’s Choice. I even managed to sneak in a couple of items for grownups, suitable as Mother’s Day presents. I hope your family mark it as a special day of appreciation! Any celebration in our house is begun with croissants in bed – after which I get to change the sheets, but hey, it’s the thought that counts! This issue also covers the Easter holiday period. There is lots and lots happening in and around Glasgow. Check out our online What’s On section for even more activities and follow us on Facebook. Whatever you choose to do with your kids, I hope you enjoy some of the sunshine we all are wishing for so much. And finally, if you have any news, or would like to take part in the Parent to Parent interview, please do get in touch, I love hearing from my readers!
I really hope you like my bumper prize issue! Best wishes, P.S. Since this is a bumper prize issue, I thought it important to remind everyone of the competition terms and conditions (see page 11). Please do make sure that you include your name and address in your entry, and yes: I will know if you are trying to enter twice from two different addresses so please don’t try as this is also a reason for being disqualified. In the last issue I had to disqualify 20% of entries due to insufficient information. Don’t let that be you!

A whole host of comedians and celebrities will be supporting this year’s Red Nose Day on Friday 24th March to help transform lives here at home in the UK and across Africa. In 2015, the generous people of Scotland raised and donated more than £2.9 million. This money has been hard at work in the local area, with more than 167 projects funded across Scotland. Emeli Sande said: “Let’s go Scotland!! Wear your noses with pride. Red Nose Day is back on Friday 24th March. Put the date in your diary. Let’s get involved. Order your fundraising kit at rednoseday.com and let’s raise as much as we can.”
Free Support for English Language Development
T
he Language Hub is a social enterprise in the heart of the west end of Glasgow. Our mission is to provide innovative and creative learning opportunities that promote interculturalism and enable cultural exchange for individuals and communities. Based on this, we run a free English reading and learning programme which offers interactive English for children within the local community between the ages of 6 months and 14 years of age. The sessions are all aimed at increasing interest in reading and improving skills long term. The hub has successfully created a meeting point for families from different language backgrounds, whether their first language is English or not.
Many of our sessions focus on literacy as it is vital for positive language learning and development and something that has priority in the curriculum of Scottish education. The sessions have been funded through various organisations like the Post Code Lottery, and currently by the Peter Baumann Foundation. At the hub, we are committed to turning passive multiculturalism into active interculturalism. Many groups work with ethnic minorities, migrants, refugees or asylum seekers with little opportunity for these groups to meet local community members. We would like people to live with each other rather than just next to each other. Adding English sessions to our services benefits children in their reading ability, will improve social skills and increase interest in reading in general. It supports parents wanting to give their children the best start and helps them to find social inclusion outside school settings. This is particularly important for young children from a multilingual background. As there is little ESL (English as a Second Language) pre-school provision available in Glasgow, discussions by the city council’s EAL department and Glasgow Library Services are followed closely to establish needs and opportunities for support. The early years reading sessions are also open to local nurseries and toddler/play groups who have a constant need for additional literacy support, but often very limited financial means of providing such a service. Long term, we aim to grow our user's confidence and impact on their social skills, with benefits for their future employment opportunities in later life. If you are interested in finding out more or would like your child to join one of our free sessions just pop in or check out our website for detailed listings. We would love to meet you! HayMax Kids drug-free formula makes it suitable for babies, toddlers, children and, of course, parents too! Kids can simply rub a small amount around the rim of both nostrils and the bones of the eyes (but not too close or in the eye) in the morning and as required throughout the day. This helps trap pollen, dust and pet allergens before they get in the body. There are no drowsy side-effects, so HayMax Kids will not affect children’s performance at school or in their important exams. This clever little balm works hard by reducing the amount of pollen getting into your child’s body, which can help lessen or prevent their hay fever symptoms. Everyone can tolerate a certain amount of pollen without reaction. However, once this amount is exceeded – called the trigger level – hay fever symptoms will start to occur. So if HayMax Kids helps your child stay below this level, they won’t get the symptoms. Check out the new kid on the block: HayMax Kids organic drug-free allergen barrier balm retails at £6.99 per pot and is available from Holland & Barrett; selected Boots; independent chemists, pharmacists and health stores; on 01525 406600 and from www.haymax.biz.

Tips & Advice on Potty Training Toddlers by Alison Mackonochie Potty training your toddler can be tricky, especially if they seem a little nonresponsive to begin with…
Knowing when to start
There’s very little point in trying to potty train your child before they are physically and emotionally ready, which is usually at around two years of age – although for some children it may take longer. Look out for signs that your child is becoming aware of doing a ‘wee’ or ‘poo’. They may tell you that they are wet or dirty, or that they are wetting their nappy or is about to do so. Another sign that your child is learning control is if their nappy is still dry after they’ve worn it for a number of hours. Once you have decided to start you need to be prepared to persevere, so choose a period when you know you will have time to give your child the extra attention that they will need.
How to begin
Explain in simple words what you want your child to do. Tell them that it’s what you and ‘big’ children do and that they’ll be able to wear ‘big pants’ once their out of nappies. Select certain times of day to sit them on her potty – perhaps after meals – but if you can, try to choose times when your child usually wets or dirties themselves. Your child may get the hang of potty training very quickly, or they may think the whole thing is a joke, or even treat it with complete disinterest. If they refuse to sit on the potty for more than a few minutes, don’t force it. You don’t want to turn this into a battle of wills! Try sitting with your little one and reading a story or just talking. And when your child achieves something, give lots of praise or even reward them with a small treat. Never show your displeasure or punish your child for not performing– this will only reduce their self-confidence and cause tension between you both. Equally, it’s important not to overdo the praise when your little one does something in her potty because they may think they’ve been naughty in some way when nothing happens in the future. Potty training is all about negotiation and persuasion, not anger and blame.
Step’n’Potty 3in1 W
in
The Step n’ Potty goes through 3 stages with your child. Starting life as a compact step stool, it converts into a potty trainer, where the inner potty can be removed for easy cleaning. The lid is stored securely in the base whilst in this mode. For the second phase, the toilet trainer is removed from the potty and used on the toilet, with aid from the slip resistant stool. Once they are older and no longer need assistance, the Step n’ Potty reverts back into the step stool they can use to reach the loo, sink or any other hard to reach areas. Suitable from 18 months to 3 years, available in aqua, magenta and blue. RRP £39.99 www.bumbo.co.uk To WIN a Step n’ Potty, please e-mail Families at competitions@familiesglasgow.co.uk (subject: “Bumbo”) with your name and address by April 15th. Standard terms and Conditions apply.
The next steps
While your child is learning to become clean and dry, putting them in training pants rather than nappies will make life easier for you both. Once your little one has achieved a certain amount of control you can introduce the idea of wearing ordinary pants. There will probably be some accidents at first, but don’t panic.
Staying dry at night
It’s unlikely that your toddler will become dry at night at the same time as they are dry during the day. Few children achieve this and many are well into their third year (or later) before they are completely dry during the night. If you encourage your child to use the potty before going to bed and don’t offer drinks at night or during the hour before bedtime you’ll find that eventually you’ll have a series of dry nappies during the night and your nappy days will be well and truly over! Alison is a well-respected and highly experienced writer and editor. The author of numerous books on pregnancy and early year’s childcare, Alison has worked with Lifecycle as editor-inchief of Emma’s Diary for more than 20 years. Emma’s Diary predicts the hot baby names for 2017 Pregnancy and baby support website Emma’s Diary has published a list of names it thinks will be popular for babies born this year. According to the site, Elsa and Anna have been hugely popular girls’ names following the success of Disney’s Frozen. It’s more than three years since we were introduced to the princesses of Arendelle however and Emma’s Diary thinks a number of new releases will influence new parents in 2017. First on the list is Belle, inspired by the live action film version of Beauty and the Beast due out in May. Moana, from last year’s Disney film of the same name, is likely to inspire a few parents herself while Dusty Rhodes is the cowgirl from Cowgirl’s Story (as well as a former WWF wrestler, funnily enough). Martha is a character in the new Jumani adventure and with rumours circulating that Disney is planning a reboot of The Princess Diaries franchise for 2017, Mia could be a popular name for 2017. As far as boys’ names go, a new film about Winnie The Pooh author A.A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin is likely to bring Christopher back into vogue For more information about the most popular baby names visit: www.emmasdiary.co.uk/baby-name-zone Families Glasgow

We are natural and fine art wedding and family portrait photographers based in Glasgow & worldwide. We also love capturing gorgeous newborns & families so do check out our work at www.thegibsonsphotography.co.uk and see an example below. Why do you like living where you do? We love living in the heart of Shawlands. There are so many parks at our disposal to walk through which is our favourite thing to do. We also love having so many shops and cafes on our doorstep.
Favourite children’s club/class Our favourite class was Baby Sensory which is incredible for little babies! www.babysensory.com
Favourite shop Zara
Favourite day out Being together and discovering something new especially for Louie since all is new to him
Favourite Park Pollok Park. We got married at Pollok House and we love the varied spots in the park from the beautifully kept gardens, to the forest paths and being able to see the highland cows.
Favourite child friendly restaurant Butterfly and The Pig in Shawlands. Staff are amazing and so friendly! Plus it is a two minute walk. Favourite night out with the kids Spending time with close friends who are like family to us. We work so much that on nights off we do like to involve friends. No parent should be without Affection. We have discovered that hugging in front of wee Louie sends him in fits of giggles. Perhaps not so much when it comes to teenagers! Parenting pet hates Counting to 3. There should be no counting. It should just be final. Kids are clever & figure out how to outplay this. Most embarrassing moment We had a client meeting which an 11 month old Louie joined us on as we had no child care. Our client had a cold and coughed a few times which Louie proceeded to mimic every single time. I felt like hiding under the table.

Favourite family holiday spot Going back to Canada as I am Canadian. Also when we go away we always try to get photos done as a family like the one taken above by Gillian for www.flytographer.com Most successful recipe/food Spaghetti Bolognese. Fry up a chopped onion and garlic paste in oil. Add chopped up mushrooms, cook a bit further. Add a packet of ground beef. Once the beef has browned add a tbsp of sharwoods curry powder (I know odd! But its so tasty) tomato paste and a can of chopped tomatoes with a tsp of sugar. Stir and add in 500ml of beef stock. Simmer for 3 hours until it is thick.

Handy Bathroom Hack By Weleda
W
e all know that babies can come with a lot of baggage – from a million essentials necessary for a quick trip out of the house to the pile of toys that have now found a home all over the living room floor, the number of ‘things’ that a parent must stock up on can sometimes seem out of hand. Luckily Weleda are here to make life (just a little bit) more straight forward with their top five uses for the award-winning Calendula Shampoo & Body Wash.
Weleda’s Calendula Shampoo & Body Wash is formulated to create a kind wash that gently cares for your baby’s skin, leaving it clean, fresh and soft to the touch. Recently awarded Silver in the Prima Baby Awards 2016 for Best Bath Product, the Shampoo & Body Wash will give your baby a gentle bath time that will also leave that gorgeous new baby smell that we all love intact. The moisturising sweet almond oil provides a splash of hydration, whilst the soft lather doesn’t sting baby’s eyes. No tears, no tugs, no roughness – just a clean, sweetsmelling, wriggly baby.
2. For Parents with Sensitive Skin
It’s not just little ones who can have delicate sensitive skin, even us adults sometimes need to use a product that is a little bit more gentle. Calendula has been used throughout history as a treatment of skin conditions, due to its natural antiseptic and healing properties. The Calendula Shampoo & Body Wash is dermatologically proven to be skin-friendly, even on the most sensitive skin. Your Kids’ Book Reviews Even Superheroes have Bad Days This book is so funny. The superheroes get grumpy, but they do yoga and give each other hugs and then they’re ok. Icky is my favourite superhero. The baddies look really funny, they are really annoyed because they got caught. At the end the superheroes have marshmallows by a campfire, and Laserman is showing off because he toasts his with his eyes! Amy (age 5), Bishopbriggs Even Superheroes Have Bad Days - Shelly Becker, illustrated by Eda Kaban - ISBN 9781454913948 – HB with jacket – £12.99 – Sterling
This Book is Out of Control I love this book. The dog is the boss. The children don’t know what to do. It’s a naughty, naughty book! Jack (age 4), Cumbernauld This Book is Out of Control – Richard Byrne – ISBN 9780192746290 – PB - £6.99 - Oxford
Super Happy Magic Forest This book is my favourite, there’s a unicorn, and a fairy, and a bunny, and they’re all my favourite, and they do lots of funny things. They have an adventure, and the pictures are full of stuff, and it’s funny when my mummy reads it. I can follow the adventure like on a map. Blossom is a fat unicorn. That’s so funny! Angus (age 5), East Kilbride Super Happy Magic Forest – Matty Long - ISBN 9780192742988 – PB - £6.99 - Oxford

Spellchasers - The Beginner’s Guide to Curses I enjoyed Spellchasers - The Beginner’s Guide to Curses by Lari Don immensely! It is a very clever and well thought out book filled with lots of witty dialogue. It is about four children who, ‘though there are few similarities between them, all have one thing in common: they are all cursed! Together with the help of a witch named Mrs Sharpe (who runs the local farm) they must rid themselves of their curses or face the consequences. The book is thoroughly enjoyable and I would (and will be) recommending it to other children. Ann (age 12), Muirend The Beginner’s Guide to Curses – Lari Don – ISBN 9781782503057 – PB - £6.99 - Kelpies
Kids Learn To Stitch I really like this book. I didn’t know how to sew, but now I can make a few fun things. I’d like to make some more for my friends. This book has lots of animals in it. The dog is my favourite. I’m going to make the bird next. You have to concentrate a bit but the pictures are really good. Erin (age 7), Maryhill Kids Learn To Stitch - Lucinda Guy & Francois Hall - ISBN 9780992796853 – PB - £9.99 - Berry & Co
Shadowsmith Mystery books are not my favourite ones which is maybe why I did not enjoy Shadowsmith so much. I thought it was scary and reading it in bed was not a good idea. I did not like the bit about Kirby’s mum being hurt during the storm and Amelia the witch was spooky. And I don’t like spiders. If someone likes Harry Potter for example and mystical things they will probably like this book a lot. Ruby (age 10), Partick Shadowsmith – Ross McKenzie – ISBN 9781782503040 – PB £6.99 - Kelpies To get involved with our reviews for future issues, please send your child’s review of their favourite book, together with their name and age, in no more than 75 words, to editor@familiesglasgow.co.uk, subject “book review application”.
