Local Food in Surrey Tracy Carroll is a devotee of good, local food and Director of The Market Place in Godstone. Following years of helping to promote local food and venues such as Priory Farm in Nutfield, Tracy has now masterminded a hub for all local independent food and drink producers. Localfoodsurrey.com is Tracy’s new website, just launched, that brings together producers, suppliers and consumers of great local produce. Tracy helps new bakeries such as Chalk Hills in Nutfield and makers of local artisan cheese such as Norbury Blue from Mickleham, near Dorking, to find their way to a wider market – so pushing good food to the top of the local agenda. LocalFoodSurrey.com is an informative, online food and drink magazine with a directory at its core, allowing visitors to search for products and services that contribute to the county’s food scene: including butchers, bakers, growers, retailers, tea shops, pubs and restaurants. Business owners who would like to find out more can contact Tracy or her colleague Maggie on 01883 744653 or email her at tracy@marketplace.uk.com To celebrate the new website initiative, Tracy is presenting Local Food Fortnight, from 28 April to 13 May, with talks, demos and tastings and more. Producers and event organisers can benefit from her website publicity and readers can sign up to keep up with Tracy’s growing band of foodie friends. localfoodfortnight.com
Dorking improvements South Street Gardens will soon see new seating installed, resurfaced ground and new lighting as well as a plane tree to replace the aging birch. Renowned artist -blacksmith Robert Kranenborg, director of Forging Matters Artist -blacksmith in Hampshire, is creating Robert Kranenborg the seating, using oak and steel, with inspiration from nearby architectural features and the site’s history as a bandstand. More improvements in Dorking – this time on the opposite side of the Dorking triangle, in West Street – have been taking place at Dorking Museum – so it will soon be time to take a visit! dorkingmuseum.co.uk

Babysitting agency launches Mother of 4, Theresa Jauregui, knows how important it is to find good babysitters. Local News What mums really want for
MOTHER’S DAY ...and that’s Sunday, 18th March!
DADS – want to know what mum really wants for Mother’s Day? Here are some ideas to show her how much you care. Warning: This is a page for dads only – mums, look elsewhere (or leave the magazine conveniently open on this page where it might be found by your other half...)
A family gathering Mothering Sunday was originally a day off from Lent, when servants were allowed to travel home to see their mums, and have a slap-up dinner together. Traditional presents were flowers and cakes – and you won’t go too far wrong if you stick to tradition. What mum doesn’t love having the family all around one table, with cake and flowers too? But mum’s not making the feast, or doing the washing up – oh no. Book her favourite restaurant or pub, or make the meal yourself and make sure you wash up afterwards.
Breakfast in bed Again, a traditional but excellent choice. Try making Jamie Oliver’s ridiculously easy American-style pancakes (1 cup each of flour and milk, plus one large egg: jamieoliver.com/recipes/fruit-recipes/applepancakes-with-the-girls) with fruit and maple syrup, add flowers and a pot of tea, and Bob’s your auntie’s live-in lover. Follow up with a family walk – or take the kids off yourself to let her really enjoy that extended lie-in.
Days Out on Mother’s Day GATTON PARK Reigate RH2 0TD Bookings: 01737 649065 gattonpark.com Sun 18 March Special Opening for Mother’s Day. Bring your mum to Gatton and she will get in free! To find out more call 01737 649066.
Time to herself This is one thing we mums often crave more than anything, so organise her some proper “me time”. Book her a spa day or indulge her hobby (yoga/writing/crafts/cookery) with a weekend course. If she doesn’t get to see her closest friends enough, maybe you could secretly liaise with them and organise a weekend away? You’ll be rolling in Brownie points after any of these. (And see Heaven spa offer below.)
Time with you, alone Chances are, since the kids came along, life’s been a little (or a lot) less romantic. Mothers’ Day is the perfect time to put this right, with a hotel reservation slipped inside the card and the grandparents on standby for next weekend. Happy days all round.
Personalised works of art If home is where your woman’s heart is, then a few personal touches to beautify it won’t go far wrong. Book a portrait session for the whole family with a great local photographer, or find a local service that turns an existing photo into a fantastic artwork. What woman could resist a framed print of her wedding day as a romantic gesture?
Something really unique With a little planning ahead, you and the kids can present mum with a truly unique and handmade creation. Take the children’s fingerprints or hand or foot casts, and have them made into pictures, keepsakes or silver jewellery. Alternatively, take the kids to a pottery painting shop and have a great time making a personalised plate, mug or vase that mum will treasure forever.
Wishing every mum a wonderful Mother’s Day! Thanks to Gabrielle Starkey for these lovely ideas.

Screening for Strep B Infections in Pregnancy NCT CLASSES
Group B Strep is the most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies. In the UK, it causes at least 340 infections in babies each year - usually infections of the blood or lungs, or meningitis.Yet most could be prevented - simply, cheaply and easily. Group B Strep is a bacterium that lives in or on 25-30% of adults without causing harm. It is different from Group A Strep, the bacteria associated with Strep throat. In women, Group B Strep can live in the vagina, so babies can be exposed to the germ

during or around labour. Most babies are not affected by GBS, but around one out of every 300 babies born to mums carrying GBS around delivery will develop GBS infection. With prompt and appropriate medical care, most will recover fully but around 1 in every 10 babies with GBS infection will die as a result and, of the survivors, around 1 in every 5 will suffer long-term problems.
The National Childbirth Trust offers ante-natal and post-natal support to all women. Below is the list of courses available in East Surrey, along with the contact details for the Parent Services Advisors in the area, who can make bookings. For local, volunteer-run courses and many ways to meet other local mums, see page 24.
Ante-natal tests at 35-37 weeks are given routinely in other countries, including the USA, Canada, France and Germany. These tests identify most of the women likely to be carrying GBS around delivery; they are offered antibiotics in labour. This prevents most GBS infections in newborns – in the US their incidence has fallen by 86%, in Spain by 85% and France 71%. Most NHS hospitals don’t have access to sensitive tests. These are available in the UK privately at a cost of around £35 (see gbss.org.uk/test for where tests that follow the HPA GBS testing guidelines are available).
Ante-natal & post-natal courses Reigate, Redhill, Dorking, Leatherhead & Crawley:
Over 90% of women polled would like information on group B Strep in pregnancy and to be screened in the late stages. Group B Strep Support, a UK charity set up in 1996 to prevent GBS infection in newborn babies has recently launched an e-petition calling for change: please sign it and share it widely gbss.org.uk/epetition. Easter
Easy tips for an eco-friendly Easter Approximately 80 million chocolate eggs will be sold in the
UK this year. It has been estimated that this will generate around 4,370 tonnes of cardboard, 160 tonnes of foil and millions off discarded plastic waste items. However, you’ll be glad to know you can still enjoy Easter, save money and help reduce your impact on our planet! A new website EthicalCommunity.com has recently launched which aims, amongst other things, to help parents purchase eco-friendly & natural alternatives for their children. Eco-conscious parents can browse from over 7,000 products, learn about the story behind each product and buy directly from the eco-sellers that made each item.
What can parents do to reduce the impact of Easter? 1. Avoid over-packaging
For chocolate lovers and eco warriors alike, the chocolate-to-packaging ratio of a standard Easter egg is a massive let-down. When choosing your Easter egg avoid those which come in giant boxes and contain sheets of plastic. Instead, choose one wrapped in foil, which can be easily recycled. Also opt for an Easter egg made
using organic and Fairtrade ingredients: that way you ensure you’re not the only one celebrating at Easter.
2. Make your own Easter treats
Create some childhood memories of Easter by pouring delicious melted chocolate into bunny-shaped moulds. Decorate them with ribbons and create the perfect Easter gift whilst spending quality time with your children. Homemade shredded wheat and chocolate bird’s nests are also hugely entertaining, both in the making and of course in the eating!
3. Choose longer-lasting gifts Rather than just giving gifts that end up in the bin or that leave you in need of a gym workout, consider something a bit longer lasting such as some natural Easter soap (website search: easter bunny soap). Or opt for this sweet organic cotton bunny (website search: organic cotton bunny).
4. Get the family together
Look for holiday activities to get the whole family outdoors spending quality time together (weather permitting!). Find those local Easter egg
hunts! And organise your own egg hunt with these tasty fair-trade mini milk chocolate eggs (website search: milk chocolate eggs). EthicalCommunity.com is a marketplace where you can buy ethical products directly from the producers and learn about the story behind their products. Since the site launched in October 2010 the EthicalCommunity marketplace has offered unique products ranging from Fairtrade coffee to handmade natural soap and up-cycled t-shirts. EthicalCommunity.com gives (often small, one-manband) sellers a platform to sell products. It also gives consumers all the information they need to demystify ethical shopping.

THE BIG PEDAL
– Biking To School
This March, schools in Reigate and Banstead will once again be encouraged to get on their bikes and cycle to school as much as they can for three weeks. Sustrans, the charity that enables people Biking to school at The Royal to walk, cycle and use public transport for more Alexandra & Albert School everyday journeys, works with over 1,400 schools across the UK. Each year the charity organises the ‘Big Pedal’, a three-week ‘race’ inspired by the Tour de France. The more children, parents and teachers Hyland 01 Climbing Framewho cycle in to school on each day, the more likely the school is to be declared the winner. Last year 15 local Bike It schools took part in Reigate and Banstead. Parents, staff and children from these schools made an incredible 15,000 journeys to school by bike over just 15 school days! This year the Big Pedal is open to all schools, not just Bike It schools. To get involved go to thebigpedal.org.uk

North Park Farm Fun and Games - Saturday, 24 March North Park Farm nestles just off the A23, the road down to Brighton, in the village of Albourne, just south of Bolney. They also sell zip wires, football goals, netball posts, basketball game sets, pogo sticks and a wide range of outdoor picnic tables, sandpits, garden games and children’s ride-on cars, trucks, tractors and go-karts. WOODCRAFT FOLK – Getting out more One way for 6-16 yr olds to get out more is to join The Woodcraft Folk – rather a quirky name for a movement that started as a splinter group from the scouts, with an emphasis on learning the skills of outdoor living. A local group meets in Reigate every Tuesday evening, enjoying a programme of games, drama, discussion, projects, crafts and singing, as well as following an educational programme based on awareness of local and global issues. Throughout the year trips to open spaces encourage outdoor games, night walks and ‘sausage sizzles’ on small pit-fires. The children can also go to summer camp and away for weekends in hostels and outdoor centres such as at Cudham, nr Westerham, Kent. Much of the time is spent in the woods, where the children have an afternoon building dens out of the wood, sometimes with tarpaulins. The aim is less for a shelter to impress Bear Grylls, more for the children to work together and enjoy experimenting. For more information about joining The Woodcraft Folk – or helping out as a volunteer – contact Claire Walton on 07939 052 816 or email reigateandredhillwoodcraftfolk@gmail.com

Holidays
Get Adventurous Holidays to remember – perhaps those spent in idyllic surroundings and luxury? Or they could well be the more adventurous sort, exposing you and your family to the challenges of outdoor life. Here is a brief round up of ‘alternative accommodation’ – fun ways to spend late spring and summer weekends, a week or even more.
Camping Pods The Pod is a timber-built, insulated hut designed to be used just like a tent - a wooden ‘tent’ for all seasons. Each Pod has plenty of headroom and a floor area of approximately 7 square metres, ample space for 2 people or even 2 adults and 2 children. One night’s Pod camping costs from £35 to £50 per Pod. Available at National Trust Lake District Campsites in Great Langdale, Wasdale & Low Wray. Go to nationaltrust.org.uk - website search: camping pods. "MTP BU 5IF 2VJFU 4JUF 6MMTXBUFS $VNCSJB $" -4 thequietsite.co.uk/accommodation/pods
Tipis and Yurts Like a wigwam, but comes in large sizes and in some beautiful rural locations, some with basic comfort, others more sophisticated. Many sites emphasise the peace and quiet and are a good base for outdoor activities. Cooking arrangements vary from communal kitchens to own bbq. Not necessarily very cheap at £50+ per night but definitely memorable!

Sheep flock to RAAS The Royal Alexandra and Albert School recently welcomed a flock of sheep to Gatton Park. The sheep are all pregnant ewes on loan from a local farmer for a few weeks until they return to the neighbouring farm for lambing. The school will take some of the lambs and raise them on its pasture until they are ready for the market. The sheep, along with the goats, horses, chickens and bees already at the school, will be a learning resource for the School’s Animal Care BTEC course. Pupils on the course will learn other important skills such as fencing, driving a tractor and developing biodiversity. Other pupils will help to care for the lambs during the after- school ‘Animal Club’. The BTECs in Countryside and Environment and Animal Care prepare pupils for a career with animals or on the land.
Oakhyrst Antenatal The School’s recent initiative of inviting parents-to-be or those with newborn babies to its inaugural Coffee Morning proved a hit with local parents. The enthusiasm generated by the Head, Alex Gear, his staff and pupils helped inform new parents of the options open to them and emphasise that it is never too early to register a child with a school. With demand for local schools on the increase, schools are now starting to accept ‘Early Years’ registrations for 2015. Oakhyrst Grange School will be holding another Coffee Morning in the Summer Term. Call Oakhyrst on 01883 343344.
Outstanding Education at The Children’s Trust The School for Profound Education at The Children’s Trust, Tadworth has received another ‘outstanding’ report from Ofsted in its latest inspection under children’s homes regulations. Chinthurst takes Girls on Board Chinthurst School, Tadworth has recently announced its landmark decision to become a co-educational school. Thereafter girls will enter at 5+yrs, then 7+yrs until September 2013, when intake throughout the school (to 13 yrs) will be mixed. Headmaster Mr Thorpe said “Until the mid-1950s, Chinthurst was a co-educational school so, in many respects, we are returning to our roots.” A school Open Morning on Thursday 8th March will show prospective parents the preparation being undertaken to welcome the integration of girls into Chinthurst. chinthurst.surrey.sch.uk
