Families Welcome

Welcome

Snow, rain and howling winds - spring has been disappointing so far to say the least! I can only hope that the weather gods are saving up all the sun to spoil us for the summer months this year - or is that just my eternal wishful thinking speaking? With Father’s Day on 16th June, we have competitions for five lucky families to surprise their Dads with this summer. There are also some very special family events and festivals coming up including the Stansted Garden Show, the annual Portsmouth Festivities and the return of Victorious Festival; bigger and better than last year with lots more for families and children. Helena Foss gives us an inspiring insight into mindfulness and how even as busy parents, we can learn to keep in the moment I know I for one will be pinning this to the notice board! Please do drop me an email if you have anything you would like to share with us at Families Magazine - we love hearing from you.

The Isle of Wight Owl and Falconry Centre With a passion for all things feathered and furred, John Owen and his team, opened the Isle of Wight Owl and Falconry Centre in 1998. Now with a dazzling collection of some of the world’s most beautiful and elegant birds from eagles, hawks and falcons, to kestrels and sleepy owls, the centre is full of fascinating sights and flights. The Centre was set up to provide the public with a rare opportunity to see and enjoy these beautiful birds, and to continue the history of falconry at Appuldurcombe. During flying displays the birds of prey soar above the sloping down land of the Appuldurcombe Valley, which is an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. Displays are normally at 10.45am, 11.45am and 2pm and there is plenty to keep the family entertained including an outdoor children’s play area and indoor children’s soft play area, the Aviary Café, large picnic areas, Indoor flight barn for wet days, Museum, Falconry courses and Cinema with a film of the Centre and Appuldurcombe House. Parking is Free and pricing is just £7 per Adult and £5 per child. Open 10 – 4pm.

Furniture & Electrical Charity Superstore in Southsea Pick-up a bargain at the new DEBRA Furniture & Electrical Charity superstore in Southsea. The store which opened in November 2012 sells a wide selection of affordable, good quality, used furniture and electrical items as well as more traditional charity shop goods downstairs. All proceeds from the store go to the charity DEBRA, which supports individuals and families affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). There are often a number of vintage finds, particularly on the lower sales floor, where you can find clothing, accessories and unusual bric-a-brac items.

EB is a rare genetic condition which causes the skin to blister and shear at the slightest friction, or even spontaneously. There are at least 5,000 people living with this devastating condition in the UK and 500,000 worldwide. Often, the blisters leave scarring which can result in permanent changes to the skin. For example, fingers may fuse together or tissue in the hand contract, reducing movement. In the worst cases the mouth, throat and tongue can be affected making eating and swallowing very painful and difficult. In its most severe forms, EB is fatal in infancy and can cause aggressive skin cancer in young adults. Even at its least severe it can still cause lifelong disability and pain. Find out more at www.debra.org.uk Pop along to 51 Elm Grove, Southsea and see the range of items available. However small your purchase you will be helping to fund research and, ultimately, find a cure for EB. If you have any unwanted furniture or electrical goods you would like to donate to the store (collection is free) or a few hours you could spare volunteering, a great way to gain valuable retail work experience, please call 02392 291574 or email southsea@debra.org.uk.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard said “The Victorious Festival will be a great addition to the Dockyard’s events calendar, allowing us to showcase the attractions to an audience who may not have thought to visit before. We are delighted to be working with local businesses to build an event that the whole city can enjoy and to also re-affirm Portsmouth as a desirable visitor destination.”

Local schools of Portsmouth and Southsea will also be asked to help support the children’s area of the festival with pupils creating maritime artwork and decoration for the big weekend. New Mary Rose Museum

opens 31st May

The famous Tudor ship that captured the world’s imagination when she was raised from the seabed in 1982 will finally reveal all her secrets 500 years after she sank. The new Mary Rose Museum - a giant ‘air lock’ and time capsule - will form the centrepiece to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Visitors enter a controlled environment to experience a unique journey through the ship and Tudor life and view the most comprehensive collection of Tudor artefacts in the world. The building takes the form of a finely crafted wooden ‘jewellery box’ with the hull at its centre and galleries running the length of the ship, each at a level corresponding to a deck level on the ship. Artefacts are displayed in such a way to provide visitors with an insight into what these decks would have looked like moments before the ship sank. What is hay-fever? Hay-fever is an allergic response to grass, tree and flower pollens. The body's immune response targets pollen as an invader and produces antigens and excesses of histamine in response to the allergen. This excessive release is the cause of the typical hay-fever symptoms such as catarrh, nasal congestion, itchy runny nose, eyes, and a sensitive palate.

Why is hay-fever becoming more and more prevalent? Many theories try to explain the reason for the sharp rise in the symptoms of hay-fever. These include the hygiene hypothesis which states we have become too clean in our modern environment. Thus the body's immune response is not primed against "normal" dirt, dust, and bacteria at a young age. This leads to the body's immune response over reacting to normal compounds such as pollen. Creating antigens to these compounds which in turn lead onto a release in histamine. It has been noted that children who live on farms and have close and prolonged contact with animals do appear to have less hay-fever than for example children who live in urban areas. The rise in levels of CO2 have been shown to increase the amount of pollen released from various trees and flowers, over a longer period throughout the summer months, this increase in levels of pollen may be the reason for the increasing levels of hay-fever especially in adults that previously have never experienced hay-fever symptoms. Herbal helpers with hay-fever symptoms The Stinging Nettle has many plant chemical or phyto-chemical constituents including, very high amounts of chlorophyll. It also contains histamine, serotonin and acetylcholine. Also Vitamin C and Minerals including, silica, iron and calcium. The medicinal actions of nettles are many and varied. It is a blood tonic/detoxifier, making it a wonderful herb to clear various red itching skin complaints, such as eczema, acne and dermatitis. The tea is of most benefit here. The young nettle tops collected in spring are best taken fresh. However, the dried herb if correctly dried will be almost as effective, and has the benefit of a long shelf life. Nettle has anti-histamine properties, and when drunk from spring throughout the summer seasonal allergies can be diminished. Eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis) is a mucous membrane tonic. Especially helpful for eyes, nose and throat. As its name suggests eyebright is famous as an eye tonic. It can be used both internally and externally with good effect. It has antihistemic action and is also anti-inflammatory making this herb an ideal choice for hayfever, especially for those with streaming, red and/or itching eyes. A strong tea may be used internally - 1-4 cups a day. The same tea may also be allowed to cool and used as an eye bath or eye compress to bring relief to symptoms topically. Wendy is a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, she qualified with a BSC(Hons) in herbal medicine in 2006. Wendy has been in constant practice ever since, seeing hundreds of patients during that time.

Workshops will be taught by local craft professionals, ‘Makers’, in crafts such as machine & hand sewing, knitting, crochet. ‘Make’ will play host to organised events such as

birthdays, corporate events, hen days and children’s parties. They also have tea, coffee and cake as well as Wi-Fi. ‘Make’ is a unique award winning business idea. Families xxxxxxx The action party What is it?

Paintballing, go-karting, swimming, Go Ape etc.

Who's it suitable for?

The traditional party What is it?

Party Time A birthday party is the highpoint of the year for most kids - so the pressure is on to get it right. The secret, as ever, is in the planning. But how do you find out which party is right for your child? We guide you through some of the options.

The restaurant party What is it?

A meal-based party e.g. a pizza restaurant, where the kids are allowed to help or watch in the food preparation.

Who's it suitable for?

Older kids of 8 - 12; children who enjoy the chance to meet and chat more than the chance to run around.

The pros: At its best, it's very civilised;

you can even have a second table in the restaurant and invite some other parents along, so it's a meal out for you as well. Children enjoy the sense of being 'grown up' and eating out with friends.

A party at-home for the birthday child and friends with traditional games like pass the parcel (always a winner), pin the tail on the donkey, and musical bumps.

Who's it suitable for?

Great for nursery and reception age children, but don't neglect its values for older kids, especially girls of eight or nine who often enjoy nothing more than inviting their friends back to their house and having a girly time.

The pros: It's cheap (or at least, it certainly can be); other parents often stay to help you out, keep you company, especially if you promise a glass of prosecco to help everyone through!

The cons: You may need to redecorate afterwards; you'll certainly need to do a major tidy up. It can be difficult to keep your birthday child's siblings out of the way, which could lead to conflict.

Top tips to make it work: 1. Agree ground rules with the birthday

4. Give them chance to let off steam in the 5. For tea, spread a huge paper tablecloth

on the floor and get them to sit around the edges of it. At the end, simply fold it up with all the rubbish inside and bin.

What is it?

An indoor party in a hired venue.

Who's it suitable for?

Children of five plus, who are confident about being left somewhere they don't know.

The pros: A lot more space than they'd have if you were at home.

The cons: You'll have to leave the place spotless afterwards, and pay for any damage.

Top tips to make it work:

3. Don't rely on the pizza-making/chef-

run off a bit of energy afterwards is a good idea.

- your local eateries may well be prepared to accommodate your party, and may be more flexible than bigger establishments.

it might be best to postpone a winter birthday party to the spring (the kids might get wet and cold as they'll be outside for ages).

5. Ensure the kids wear any safety

Whatever sort of party you're having don't neglect the party bags! Every kid, at every party, is secretly (or not so secretly!) longing for a party bag - and part of the excitement for your child is helping to put the bags together. Have a budget and stick to it - party bags can add hugely to the cost of a party - but try and limit the wasteful plastic toys that get thrown away immediately.

Brown paper bags with the child's name in big writing and decorated with stickers are very effective.

2. Bake cookies or other treats and package them in cellophane tied with ribbon.

3. Let the birthday person create their own

4.

Get cardboard picture frames and slip in a note about where the party pictures will be uploaded online.

5. Do something arty during the party and let the guests take their handiwork home cheap plates or bowls can be decorated with ceramic paint, a strip of wood decorated with their initial, etc.

6. Give out seeds to plant in the garden or a cookie cutter that's related to the party theme.

7.

Buy enough bouncy balls for each guest, scatter them about your lawn before the party. The balls are a great decoration and each guest gets to take one home.

8.

Print off free colouring sheets of favourite characters from the internet, and burn a CD of the birthday person’s favourite songs.

Mindfulness has become the buzzword in the world of health and wellbeing. Helena Foss explores what the fuss is about and how busy mums can fit it into their day.

Over at Bangor University, you can do a degree in it. It is at the cutting edge of psychotherapy. Study after study shows it reduces the stress hormone cortisol (linked to everything from heart disease to cancer), alleviates headaches and anxiety; boosts the immune system; improves mental health, creativity and problem solving. In fact, with regular practice of mindfulness it is perfectly possible to rewire the brain to a more peaceful disposition, a process known as neuroplasticity. Academics at Bangor describe mindfulness as: ‘paying attention on purpose moment to moment without judging.’ This quote comes from Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder of the stress reduction programme at the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre, where mindfulness has been taught and studied since the 1970s. Based on Eastern meditation techniques, the Centre’s mindfulness programmes have yielded consistently successful results in all kinds of settings: from prisons and deprived inner cities to the corporate world.

overturning patriarchy, we are slowly but surely burning out. ‘Having it all’ has really transpired into ‘doing it all’, which is why we all need to schedule in pure nothing time on a regular basis. This might appear unproductive. But there is great value in stopping being a ‘human doing’ and practicing the forgotten art of simply being, if only for a few moments. Most of us, at some point in our lives, have had a standstill moment in time – maybe watching an awe-inspiring sunset, looking into your newborn’s eyes for the first time, or even hearing heart-breaking news that you know will change your life forever. In that instant, we are so immersed in the moment that time itself slows right down. Now, this is the point of mindfulness practice; to be so present that time actually stretches, a little like blue tac, opening up space in your mind. No smartphone app required. Cool, huh? (Did I mention this takes practice?)

Mindless chatter

Human doings or human beings?

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), the NHS approved treatment of choice for depression, works to change the negative thought loops which trigger emotional distress. Indeed, most of us identify so closely with our minds that we believe the stream of mindless chatter that forms the running commentary to our lives, is who we actually are. But if you listen closely, you will notice that a lot of it is, well, a load of old nonsense: Judgements, opinions, shoulds, what ifs and if onlys. Endless self-criticism, worrying about the future, pining over the past, arguing with someone in your head, wondering what the neighbours think of you in your most stressed out moments (come on, admit it, we all yell sometimes), picking over every last detail of that mortifying incident when your child projectile vomited all over that terribly nice shop assistant... Anything except relaxing into the moment that is happening right now and letting everything be exactly as it is.

Yes, women have the vote and legalised equality. But while we’re busy proving our worth to the world at large and

The magic of mindfulness is that simply observing our thoughts without

Yes, but where do I find the time? Back in May, Cross Country Rail (www. crosscountrytrains.co.uk) commissioned a poll of 1,000 parents, 62 per cent of whom described managing their home, parenting responsibilities and longer working hours as akin to ‘one big juggling act’. Three quarters of those polled said that lack of time to themselves causes arguments with their partners, whilst one in ten get only ten minutes to themselves each day. Cross Country Rail have responded by creating a time-saving Smartphone app for booking train tickets. But are super efficient gizmos really the answer to alleviating constant overwhelm?

judgement (which really does take practice!) can, over time, actually change them. Using will power to, for example lose weight, rarely works as any yoyo dieter will tell you. Rather than sergeant majoring yourself into a strict health regime (and beating yourself up when you give into temptation), in the long term it is more practical and effective to observe your behaviour and compassionately notice the deeper, subconscious thoughts and emotions driving the urge to overeat. The Buddhist psychotherapist Tara Brach, calls this approach ‘radical acceptance.’ Not necessarily easy, but it does work. You see, silence can actually be deeply intelligent; doing nothing extraordinarily productive.

Get the knack Find some quiet time and practice sitting with a straight back, feet on the floor (cross legged if you prefer) and notice your breathing, how the air feels as it touches the insides of your nostrils, your chest rising and falling. The idea is to witness thoughts that come and go without getting caught up in them. You could see them as clouds in the sky or a newsfeed along the bottom of your internal TV screen. Random thoughts will distract you time and time again. This is normal. ‘What can I make for dinner? Oh, my nose is itchy. I’ll never get the hang of this.’ You know the kind of thing. Keep bringing your attention back to the breath. If emotions arise, give them space and just let them be. Once you have the hang of it, you can make any mundane daily activity mindful: Whilst washing up, become as present as you can to the sights, sounds and sensations of that moment. Feel how your feet touch the ground whilst walking. Just notice. Simply be.

Making the Transition to Secondary School How much to help and how much to let go The transition from Primary to Secondary School is an anxious time for parents.

are some tips and tools which should help you prepare for and manage the early months:

During the primary school years, it is fairly easy to support your child at school. You will probably know his teacher, other members of staff and parents, as well as being familiar with school policies and routines. The thought of losing the control this familiarity offers is as daunting for parents as it is for children and you may well wonder how best to continue to support your child.

Before the transition:

You may also worry specifically about your child’s ability to cope with the new environment and crucially, whether he or she will make friends. Your anxieties may be eased by adopting strategies that help with the transition. Here

Shield your child from your anxiety.

They can make this transition. Critically, they need to know that you believe in them and their ability to deal with difficulties and challenges.

Relax the organisation Towards the end of year 6, step back from the organisation of your child’s school life e.g. packing school bags etc. You may secretly want to savour these last few months of dependency but your child needs a taste of independence. If they are slow to take up the reins, don’t take over and don’t despair, they will get there eventually.

Educational Psychologist Service from Fleet Tutors Currently 10% of the British population are dyslexic, but too often this is not identified at school. Many dyslexic children are very bright, but struggle to fulfil their potential in the classroom if dyslexia or other learning difficulties are not properly identified. For many children, however, despite the best efforts of our over-burdened schools, many are unable to achieve their full potential due to a lack of resources, or more worryingly, through a lack of understanding. A growing number of parents do not trust our schools when it comes to recommending strategies to help a child progress with their education once learning difficulties are identified. Due to growing demand from parents, Fleet Tutors, a supplementary education service provider, has now extended its range of services beyond tutoring to include

independent educational psychologist assessments to identify dyslexia, dyscalculia and other learning difficulties. These assessments will help parents and pupils address their difficulties within the school environment and before the child loses confidence. Assessments are conducted by a fully qualified member of the British Psychological Society, with over twentyfive years’ experience and a comprehensive understanding of various learning difficulties. Appointments are available now at Fleet Tutor’s West London and Farnborough offices. With thirty-five years’ experience helping students of all ages achieve their goals, Fleet Tutors operates a network of over 5000 qualified, experienced tutors across the country. For more information on Fleet Tutors’ services, visit www.fleet-tutors.co.uk or call 0845 644 5452

If your child will walk to school or travel independently on public transport, practice the new journey. Start by travelling together but without interaction. Then move to simply following behind your child. Finally, let him do it alone and meet him there. Travel at busy times. Allow your child to make mistakes and find solutions. This equips them with the skills to handle the unexpected like bus detours and road closures.

After the transition: Be there

Make sure a parent or trusted carer is available before and after school -to provide food, notice if your child comes in late, listen to their successes and concerns and be aware of subtle changes in mood; someone to empathise and with whom to discuss problems. Watch and listen, help out if asked but don’t take over.

Become an Enabler rather than a Fixer. Support the development of friendships. It is of great importance to older children that they mix socially and establish secure friendships and they need to do this whilst still young enough to turn to you for support when they make mistakes. Gradually they will learn to make informed choices about friends. It’s appropriate for this age group to have access to a basic mobile phone and computer but the dangers of social networking should be discussed and boundaries agreed upon.

Support organisation and routines. Create “To Do Lists” or “Timetables” for the fridge, agree places to keep bags, kit, and books. Label uniform and valuables. Establish routines so they can get to school punctually. Don’t expect too much too soon, many won’t crack this for years!

Understand what homework they have and know when it has been completed and handed in. Agree a routine that will help your child to complete and hand in all homework on time, without devoting too much time to one piece and little or nothing to others. However, remember it is their homework not yours; help, encourage, motivate but accept their best.

Schedule time to relax. Your child will be exhausted by the effort of holding it all together. Tears are likely over the most trivial things and they may regress and demand more care. Trust that they can cope and make sure there is time for sleep, friends, homework, more sleep, watching TV, playing computer games and yet more sleep! Avoid weekend breaks and reduce extra-curricular commitments to the minimum. Now is not the time for your child to begin new activities or classes. And lastly, schedule time to relax yourself! All will eventually be well. Do not hesitate to talk to your child's tutor or head of year/ house in the new school. As your child will have more teachers, it is important find the right way to speak to them. You should make sure you have clearly communicated any of your child's needs to all staff involved. Have the relevant contact details (email or phone) to hand, so you don't have to go through the busy office every time. Opening good links with teachers can help to reduce your concerns, and nip any teething problems in the bud. If you are concerned about your child's progress in Maths or English, Kip McGrath Portsmouth offer all children a free educational assessment. Howard Jones Kip McGrath Education Centre, Portsmouth.

Mums Mean

Business! The Hare and the Broom is the creation of Hampshire mums Sally Brooming and Hannah Hares. With a format akin to a Body Shop party, they bring a range of quality children’s toys for ages 0 – 10 years for you to experience in your own home; making shopping relaxing, easy and fun. What inspired you to start up your business? ‘‘We felt there was a lack of good quality, unique toys in our local town centres and decided that we could do something about it. We were both in a position where we were looking for a new challenge so starting up our own business seemed the ideal solution. We decided on Toy Parties because, as we discovered, the costs of opening and running a physical shop are financially prohibitive. Also having attended Body Shop and Jamie at Home parties we felt that the format is great for busy families.’’

What else do you offer aside from the toy parties? ‘‘We have an online shop at thehareandthebroom.co.uk and we also offer an advice service for those who can’t decide what to buy. You can also catch us at local events where you can purchase toys directly from us.’’

How have you found working together in business with a friend? ‘‘It has made the whole experience really enjoyable and has also meant that we have had constant support during what has been a steep learning curve. From the start we were very conscious about how working together may affect our friendship but so far we have found that it hasn’t been a problem, in fact quite the opposite.‘‘

What is your favourite part of your new work? ‘‘Doing something that we really enjoy makes working a pleasure rather than a means to an end. Also being able to fit work around family life makes for happy mummies and kids. Sourcing and choosing all our lovely stock has been great

fun and we have met lots of lovely people along the way. Selling toys for a living is never going to be boring is it!’’

10% off online or ders during May & Ju ne 2013 Ente r code FAMILIES1 during checkout proces s.

thehareandtheb

room.co.uk

And what is the worse... have you come across any problems on the way? ‘‘We can’t really think of a downside to our business venture. We have had some frustrating times, particularly with finding information initially about what you need to do to start a business. It was a case of you don’t know what you don’t know!! Ok we will admit it, one “downside” we have discovered is that we are both VERY good at spending money!’’

What plans have you got for the future? We would love to broaden our range and have lots of products in mind that we will add to our stock list in the future. We would also love to expand the Toy Party side of the business, potentially through franchising it out to other areas of the country. We are always looking for new play groups or events to show off our lovely selection of toys.

The benefits of

Babywearing By Elizabeth Cahill of Southsea Slings Ltd Whether you're expecting your first bundle of joy or chasing a team of toddlers, choosing to use a sling can be a child care revelation. With carrier’s sales continuing to rise, 'baby wearing' shows no signs of disappearing, and it’s never too late to learn how.

So why are so many parents so keen to get up close and personal with their little ones? Aside from the clear advantage of convenience, when a baby, or two, join the family, having both hands free becomes a luxury!

Image NCT Shop

The list of benefits to both parent and child is endless, from aiding recovery of postnatal depression to reducing the risks of plagiocephaly. Carrying your newborn safely and comfortably (see TICKS Safety Rules) makes it possible to recognise and respond to their needs quickly, meaning fewer tears and less time spent trying to soothe and satisfy. Using slings is a handy skill for breastfeeding mothers and the perfect way to get all the skin-to-skin time baby needs. It’s also a particularly beautiful way for dads to bond. Carrying also proves successful in helping babies with colic, reflux and wind. Having baby in a well-supported, upright position with the gentle movement means gravity can

work its magic, sending milk and stomach acids down and trapped air up. The fun doesn't have to stop when they stop being babies! Giving your tired toddler a piggy back won’t mean your arms are 2 inches longer by the time you get home, as correct height positioning in a suitable back carrier can make for a pain free ride. And positioning is key... Key developments of a baby’s spine and pelvis take place in the early years, during which time the optimal position, for baby, is with a curved back, knees above hips and legs apart: a straddled squatting position. To find a carrier which best supports baby's development and your body shape, it’s a good idea try various styles. The majority of high street slings have a narrow seat and narrow shoulder straps, meaning a poor spinal/ hip position for baby, and poor back support for you! Online it is easy to browse through beautifully designed and expertly made slings; ring slings, stretchy wraps, woven wraps, mei tais and soft structured carriers to name the most popular. It can be quite overwhelming! To help you through the jargon and on to cuddles on the go, there’s plenty of help out there. All over the country there are weekly and monthly groups and extensive libraries, giving opportunities for parents and carers to swap tips and get expert advice. In Portsmouth, Southsea Slings Ltd', (southseaslings.co.uk) a fully qualified, insured and experienced team of baby

wearing consultants, hold a monthly library service giving you the chance to try before you buy from a varied range of different carriers, as well as regular workshops to make sure you get it right every time. Prefer one to one? Not a problem with private consultations, or perhaps a bespoke event just for you and your friends. There are lists of baby wearing

consultants, libraries and groups available at www.babywearing.co.uk www.ukslinglibraries.co.uk, and www.slingguide.co.uk all highly recommended and trusted sites. Whether you're an absolute beginner or just perfecting a new technique, using a sling safely and comfortably can be learnt quickly, will be long lived and will never be forgotten.

The T.I.C.K.S. Rule for Safe Babywearing

Keep your baby close and keep your baby safe. When you’re wearing a sling or carrier, don’t forget the T.I.C.K.S. TIGHT IN VIEW AT ALL TIMES CLOSE ENOUGH TO KISS KEEP CHIN OFF THE CHEST SUPPORTED BACK TIGHT – slings and carriers should be tight enough to hug your baby close to you as this will be most comfortable for you both. Any slack/loose fabric will allow your baby to slump down in the carrier which can hinder their breathing and pull on your back.

IN VIEW AT ALL TIMES – you should always be able to see your baby’s face by simply glancing down. The fabric of a sling or carrier should not close around them so you have to open it to check on them. In a cradle position your baby should face upwards not be turned in towards your body.

CLOSE ENOUGH TO KISS – your baby’s head should be as close to your chin as is comfortable. By tipping your head forward you should be able to kiss your baby on the head or forehead.

KEEP CHIN OFF THE CHEST – a baby should never be curled so their chin is forced onto their chest as this can restrict their breathing. Ensure there is always a space of at least a finger width under your baby’s chin.

SUPPORTED BACK – in an upright carry a baby should be held comfortably close to the wearer so their back is supported in its natural position and their tummy and chest are against you. If a sling is too loose they can slump which can partially close their airway. (This can be tested by placing a hand on your baby’s back and pressing gently - they should not uncurl or move closer to you.)

A baby in a cradle carry in a pouch or ring sling should be positioned carefully with their bottom in the deepest part so the sling does not fold them in half pressing their chin to their chest.
