ThecurrentOfstedschoolgradingsystemplacesenormous significanceononeoffourgrades,rangingfromOutstanding toInadequate. Theseonewordgradescannotreflectthe complexitiesofschoollife. Inaddition,judgementscan beinconsistentandfailtoaccuratelyidentifythefullrange ofstrengthsofaschoolalongsideareasforimprovement, balancingtheirrelativeimportance.Undueweightcanalso
sometimesbegiventoindividualconversationsorevidencethat isnotrepresentativeofhowaschooloperates.
Equally,Ofstedjudgementsmaynotproperlyreflectortake accountof crucialfactorslikedemographics,staffing levelsandfunding orthepressuresplacedonstaffwhoare increasinglysupportingpupilswithissuesintheirlivesfollowing cutstoserviceslikehealthandsocialcareinmanyareasofthe UK.
Inaddition,mostschoolsdonotreceiveadditionalsupportor resourcestohelpthemtoimproveonareasOfstedclaimsneed improvement.Frequentchangestoinspectioncriteriaandthe highstakesassociatedwithoutcomes,increaseworkloadfor staffseekingtomeetthelatestrequirements.Thiscandetract fromtheprioritiesschoolshaveidentifiedtomeetpupils’ immediateneeds.

Settlethemintotheircotandkeepareassuringhandonthem forashorttime.Standbackandseewhathappens.Sometimes they’llsurpriseyouandfallasleep!
Iftheystarttogetupset,shush,pat,singorwhateverhelpsto calmthem.Ifnothingworks,pickthemup,sootheuntilcalm andthenresettlethemintotheircot.Repeatasmanytimesas necessary.
