A world of fun awaits at Shropshire Kids Fest This is a festival designed for kids with one thing in mind – FUN! Shropshire Festivals have jumped into the imaginations of our youngsters and created something beyond their wildest dreams.

Children with better co-ordination more likely to achieve
Young children with better eye-to-hand co-ordination are more likely to achieve higher scores for reading, writing and maths according to new research by the University of Leeds. More than 300 children aged 4 - 11 took part in various computer tasks designed to measure eye-to-hand coordination, such as steering, taking aim and tracking objects on a computer screen. The results revealed that the children who did better in the eye-to-hand co-ordination tasks tended to have higher academic attainment in reading, writing and maths. In particular, those with the best performance in the ‘steering task’ were on average 9 months ahead of classmates who struggled.

Music can improve parent-child bond New research suggests sharing music can improve parent-child relationships, especially during adolescence. Researchers found that young men and women who shared musical experiences with their parents during childhood - and especially during adolescence - report having better relationships with their mums and dads as they enter young adulthood.

While shared musical experiences at all age levels were associated with better perceptions of parent-child relationship quality in young adulthood, the effect was most pronounced for shared musical experiences that took place during adolescence.

Learning the times tables – tips and tricks In 2020, it becomes compulsory for all Year 4 students to undergo a new times table test and this is likely to put additional pressure on parents to help their children get to grips with their times tables.
The library offers over 8000 fiction and nonfiction titles, including popular authors such as J. K. Rowling, David Walliams, Roald Dahl and many more. Audiobooks are available to download through an app available for most tablets and smartphones, to stream online, or sent direct through the letterbox on MP3 CD with no postage costs or late fees. There can be many challenges to living with a disability or additional needs, but reading shouldn’t be one of them.
While it may seem tedious to practise times tables with your child, by ensuring your child is confident with times tables you will be equipping them with essential tools for success in maths.

Getting familiar with multiplication concepts

The first step with multiplication is to make sure your child understands what multiplication really means. In other words, they need to understand that 4 x 3 is the same as 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 and be confident with such number sequences.
Children’s inability to instantly recall times tables and manage simple multiplication is a recurring theme of mathematics teaching reported by teachers in primary schools. These skills need to be embedded by Year 4 in order to prepare for the maths teaching for the next two years. At secondary school, lack of basic numeracy, including not knowing their multiplication tables really well, can lead to an inability to grasp new concepts and really slow children's mathematical progress.
The rule of commutativity Show your child that each answer repeats, so, technically, they only have to learn half of the tables. In other words, 4 x 5 is the same as 5 x 4. The rule of commutativity helps them understand that they know more than they might think.
Point out patterns It doesn't all have to be memorised by rote. There are clues and helpful hints that can be learned. For example 2x is just doubling the number. This is the same as adding the number to itself: 2 x 2 = 4, 2 x 3 = 6, 2 x 4 = 8 etc. So the pattern is 2, 4, 6, 8 etc. And once these are remembered then the rule of commutativity above means they also know 3 x 2, 4 x 2 etc.

9× has a pattern too: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90. Notice how the tens (first digits in every number) go up by one and the units (second digits) go down. All the multiples of ten end in zero. All the multiples of 5 end in either 5 or 0 and are half as large as the multiples of ten. (10 x 5=50 which is half of 10 x 10 = 100). Any number x 0 is always 0. No matter what.

The answers to the 4 times table are double the answers to the 2 times table. For example, 3 × 4 = 12 is the same as 3 × 2 × 2. Likewise, the answers to the 8 times table are double the answers to the 4 times table. For example, 5 × 8 = 40 is the same as 5 × 4 × 2. Learning the 11 times table is actually easy up to the number 9. It is simply doubling the appearance of the number you wish to multiply by. For example, 2 x 11 = 22, 3 x 11 = 33, 4 x 11 = 44 and so on.
Teach the tricks The great thing with times tables is that there are many tricks that can help your child memorise them more easily. Let's take a look at a couple of tricks: 2 times tables: Double it! Two times a number simply means add the number twice. 6 x 2 is actually 6 + 6 and 8 x 2 is the same as 8 + 8.
With 6 months to go until the 11+ entrance exam, there is still time to get the reassurance that your child is heading in the right direction. At this stage in your child’s 11+ preparation, the focus should be on identifying any areas for improvement and expanding upon key skills, so you can tackle weaker 11+ areas head on. 4 times tables: Double the number you are multiplying, then double it again! It is simply a matter of doubling the number, then doubling the answer. For example, 4 x 5 is 5 + 5 = 10 and then 10 + 10 = 20. 4 x 5 is 20.

Drilling Some drilling is inevitable. Drilling should be done once the child is familiar with their tables or at least a set of numbers. Drilling should be started in order and once you feel they are getting there you can mix it all up. They may hesitate at the beginning but the more you drill the more the times tables will be embedded into their memories.
Everyone’s different Some children like to learn by rote; for others it doesn’t work at all. To support their learning, work out what will make times tables stick in your child’s mind, whether that’s singing them, putting them into practice with puzzles, playing games with them or writing them out. Plymouth, a city shaped by sea, trade and war, is rich in history and culture. It has a huge variety of lovely eateries, plenty of places to go and an abundance of things to do to keep all the family happy. Plymouth, dubbed ‘Britain’s Ocean City’, is full of a surprising number of attractions, charm and hidden treasures.
Day 1 Strathmore selfcatering apartments hugely surpassed our expectations. A lovely modern, clean and tasteful accommodation, spacious with highStrathmore Apartments ceilings, yet cosy and family-friendly d a comfy mfy with two bathrooms, and living room space to relax in with a good sea view. Bliss. A modern restaurant with traditional brasserie dishes served with a modern twist. The food was freshly prepared, well presented and delicious. Day 2 Plymouth Hoe was a 2 minute walk from our apartment. Here we visited monuments and admired the vast sea view, the boats, and enjoyed the light bustle around us.

Next, we visited the h National Marine Aquarium. We were met there by our guide P Paull who was brimming with enthusiasm for all matters oceanography. The sea life exhibits were highly informative and breathtaking – opening our eyes to life within Plymouth waters and the oceans of the world. It's the place from which SSir Francis Drake and the Pilgrim Fathers sset sail, and where Britons danced in d defiance of Hitler's Luftwaffe. LLater that afternoon, we enjoyed some ttime in the Continental Hotel’s heated in indoor pool which was free to guests of SStrathmore h Apartments, along with a sauna, steam room and gym.

@familiesbirminghammag Day 3 A visit to Royal William Yard took us to a different part of the Plymouth waterfront, 10 minutes drive from Strathmore Apartments. The Yard is an award winning Grade I listed ex-Naval yard, home to a range of restaurants, bars, galleries and shops. We explored The Yard looking at the various listed buildings including an old bakery, art galleries, theatre, etc, with spectacular sea views through the Firestone Arch by the green. The Stairway to Devon experience at the far end of the Yard was truly phenomenal. www.royalwilliamyard.com There are many eateries here. We chose Wagamama which serves delightful Japanese cuisine. The staff were attentive and made us feel comfortable in their modern restaurant, accommodated within a Grade 1 listed building. We found the staff keen to show Plymouth to its finest, highlighting the most exciting parts of the city. All food we tried was mouthwatering, with great children’s menu choices too. www.wagamama.com/restaurants/plymouth Our afternoon was spent at Clip’n’Climb, Derriford - a 20 minute drive away from the Yard, and away from the Plymouth coast. Clip’n’Climb proved to be an exhilarating activity for all the family. We had an absolute blast trying out all the different climbing challenges which test your problem solving skills, strength, endurance and sense of humour. Afterwards, we tried the Leap of Faith and the Vertical Drop Slide challenges, and finished off with an interactive video climbing game. www.plymouth.clipnclimb.co.uk

The restaurant takes pride in its well-earned local reputation for its amazing pizzas and cider – reportedly, and deservedly, the best in Devon. Explore Exmoor Another easy to reach destination from our region is Exmoor, making it another natural choice as a staycation for West Midlanders. Once you turn off at Junction 27 of the M5, and reach the more local roads within Exmoor, it is easy to feel like you’ve entered a new world. The pace is slower and the sweeping skyline lower. Beautiful. Our accommodation, Heddon Lodge Cottage, Heddon Valley, was in a satisfyingly deep part of the Exmoor forest. We were delighted to discover that part of our welcoming committee was made up of the resident peacocks and peahens roaming freely! The accommodation was a self-catering cottage with excellent views of high hills and forest as far as the eye could see. The apartment was very clean, had generously proportioned rooms, a well-equipped kitchen, two bedrooms, and a bathroom. www.thehuntersinnexmoor.co.uk A stone’s throw away from H Heddon Lodge is the National T Trust office which provides plenty o advice for walks which are of fa family-friendly and buggyf friendly. There are more c challenging walks for those who p prefer a harder trek.

Our kids were so excited to try out Lynton’s Cliff Top Railway - the local pride and joy which features heavily in the history of engineering as it is the only cliff-top rail which works on water pressure. The homely Cliff Top Café offers a range of delicious freshly prepared sandwiches, cakes and light lunches, including vegetarian, vegan and GF options. It also boasts of being perfectly positioned for the best coastal view whilst having a compulsory Devon Cream Tea! www.cliffrailwaylynton.co.uk The Lynmouth National Park Centre, open 7 days a week, provides plenty of interactive exhibitions for children, tourist leaflets, as well as helpful staff. There’s Lynton Cinema, the Lyn and Exmoor museum, the Lyn Model Railway in Lynmouth, Valley of Rocks, Woody Bay Station – the last narrow-gauge railway adventure, and of course the glorious, seemingly endless, rocky coastline to enjoy and explore. After a traditional full-English breakfast at Hunter’s Inn the following morning, we headed back home. We decided to take the scenic route back in the hope of spotting some of the wild ponies, cattle and red deer of Exmoor. Some good spots to see them are Porlock Hill or Winsford Hill above Winsford village, but do take care to drive slowly and not to approach them. There are many delights to discover in Exmoor. Football boosts girls’ confidence New research suggests that playing football can have a significant impact on the self-confidence of girls. A study by the University of Birmingham for the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is the largest of its kind and features data collected from 4128 girls and young women aged 13 and over in Denmark, England, Germany, Spain, Poland and Turkey. 80% of girls surveyed said they felt more confident as a result of being part of their football team. 58% of the female footballers questioned said football had lf fid helped them overcome a lack of self-confidence.

Sharenting is the term used to deďŹ ne the sharing by parents of posts about their children on social media, whether the everyday, or special milestones such as birthdays, travels, ďŹ rst steps or achievements. Often known as ‘over-sharenting,’ it can be seen as negative, attracting criticism for being repetitive, boring, a form of digital narcissism, humblebragging (“isn’t it terrible that my child is struggling with Grade 7 piano?â€?), or insensitive of those who are unable to have children.
The beneďŹ ts of sharenting For many, sharing posts about their children validates the value of the parenting role, and is seen as the modern equivalent of sending round-robin letters: part of the duty of communicating with the wider family. Geographical distance can limit the ability to meet up physically and being able to engage online with the lives of nieces, nephews, and grandchildren online has been joyfully embraced as a substitute. For parents themselves, social media can create a sense of community and connection and can be helpful when managing the challenging aspects of parenting. For those who have grown up sharing their lives online, sharing parenthood is simply the next stage of their life journey.
The risks of sharenting Every interaction that we make online leaves a trail, commonly known as a ‘digital footprint,’ which others, such as future employers, may ďŹ nd by searching for your child’s name. Many children’s ďŹ rst appearance on social media is their birth scan announcement. Once information is out there, it is hard, if not impossible, to recall it. Barclays are saying

• Try not to show that you have a regular routine every day. • Don’t post pictures of your children naked.
Develop your own and your child’s digital literacy Don’t believe that others have ‘perfect lives’ with their children any more than you do, and consider whether you need to capture every moment.
Having conversations about sharenting
because of how much we share online, identity fraud has never been easier, so beware of revealing full names, dates of birth, home addresses, places of birth, mother’s maiden name, schools, names of pets, sport teams supported and/or beware of using the same information in passwords.
Practical steps to take Many of the practical steps that you can take to protect yourself or your child whilst sharenting are largely common sense, and involve thinking before you post:
What platform are you sharing the content on? Facebook is restricted to friends but other platforms are more public. Check your privacy settings. Within Facebook, use lists to share content with speciďŹ c groups of family and friends.
Take care with photos
Conversations about digital and social media should be an everyday conversation in most households. Before you post about your children, think whether this will cause them embarrassment or give rise to bullying. As they get older, ask permission before you post content. Be prepared to take content down. At the same time, be mindful that we tend to overcurate our lives, and, as Aimee Horton from www.passthegin.co.uk says, at some point children need to learn to laugh at themselves, and recognise that there’s a difference between amusing posts (shared with love) and harmful content. Children targeted by adults on social media Research released by the NSPCC has revealed that one in four young people have been contacted via social media by an adult they didn’t know, and a third of these were children under 13. 2,059 children and 2,049 parents were surveyed for Net Aware, the essential guide to 40 of the most popular social media sites, apps and games that young people use. Children and parents were asked if they’d seen violent, bullying or adult content on the social networking sites and games they use – with Facebook and YouTube receiving high risk ratings across the board.
The term ‘fake news’ gained popularity during the course of the last American Presidential election, when Donald Trump used it to describe some of the news reporting around the campaigns. Since then, debate about ‘fake news’ has regularly hit the headlines amidst concerns that its proliferation is disrupting elections around the world: it’s one of the most talked about subjects of the year. But what is it? What does it mean to you and your family? Being news-savvy empowers children and keeps them engaged and motivated to ďŹ nd out about the world around them. But what should we be teaching them about ‘fake news?’ A recent BBC survey of 18 countries worldwide found that nearly 8 in 10 people said they worried about what was fake and what was real on the internet. Fake news can easily go viral via social media so it’s vital that children learn to question what they see and read and have the opportunity to discuss it and share their views. Most school children know what fake news is, but teachers report that many of them aren't always able to correctly identify it. They don’t always know what they are looking for. Here are our top 5 tips for helping children spot fake news:
