What’s Inside...

Looking after young people’s wellbeing

Mental health and wellbeing is an area that many of us will struggle with at some point in our lives. We know that many of Edinburgh’s children and young people will face difficulties resulting in them struggling with their feelings, emotions and day-to-day challenges.

It’s normal to feel angry, sad or frustrated some of the time, but recognising that we are struggling with feelings or emotions is really important. Understanding why we feel like we do and learning coping mechanisms can help us stay well. Research also shows that this can also help prevent more serious health problems later in life.

The council has created a web resource with and for Edinburgh’s children, young people and their families. The site aims to support children, young people and the adults around them to maintain positive wellbeing. One of the highlights is a series of short films where children and young people in Edinburgh children talk about why it’s important to talk about feelings and share their tips for emotional wellbeing – being kind, doing something you enjoy, spending time with people who make you feel good, helping friends, getting active, making a difference and taking a moment for yourself.

How we feel matters and our site offers a safe digital space to find advice, local support, tips and tools for your wellbeing. There are video tips, advice on apps, information on local supports and signposting to other endorsed websites that we know provide further sources of helpful advice and resources which include helplines and chat based support. We hope children, young people and their families in Edinburgh will find the wellbeing resources helpful. We will be adding information, support and resources to it and welcome feedback, particularly from young people and families to help us to do this.

Their mother and baby room has been spruced up and you can also shop some of the cutest little baby and toddler clothes - while also taking in the amazing first floor view of the castle!

Children's Sports Academy

A primary school teacher for 14 years and a certified Gymnastics Activity Instructor, Founder Sally-May Kirby has gained extensive experience in coaching sport to primary school-aged children.

A keen netball player and swimmer, she wanted to pass on her love of sport to her own children but felt there was a lack of opportunity for children to access a variety of coached sports from a young age.

“Many parents can identify with this scenario” explains Sally-May.

“Your child shows an interest in taking part in a sport but you have no idea where to start. What will they enjoy? Which one will “stick”? Can I fit it into our busy week?

“Ideally, children should be able to try out different sports to find their “one” and benefit from the physical, mental and social advantages that sport participation brings. At Children's Sports Academy we offer a “one stop shop” in the coaching of primary school-aged children and give all participants access to a variety of sports. Our sessions take place under one roof within the state of the art facilities of The Galleon Club in George Watson’s campus where our participants receive progressive, professional coaching in gymnastics, tennis and football.”

Children’s Sports Academy provides children with the ideal foundation to build a lifelong love of sport and reap the benefits that sport participation brings.

Rain, rain go away!

That was my chant for a lot of the summer! Soaked right through on more than one occasion I finally had the bright idea to get some waterproof trousers (I know - genius me!)

My chant then changed to “rain? what rain?” once I bought some Sprayway waterproof trousers. - so easy to put on and take off they made difference between day ruining downpours & insignificant showers. Sprayway has the answer with lightweight, packable, easy to get on and off Gore-Tex™ and HydroDRY™ options suitable for all shapes and sizes.

Hopefully back to school weather will be wall to wall sunshine - but just in case, I can’t recommend a pair of these more to have handy for the school run! www.sprayway.com

Talking to Your Children About Separation and Divorce - A Guide for Parents

Separation and divorce are difficult experiences, not only for parents, but the children in the family are negatively affected as well. As leading experts in family law, the team at Gibson Kerr knows that open and honest communication is key to helping your kids navigate this major change. This guide outlines our advice on what to do and avoid when discussing separation and divorce, along with some legal considerations.

Do:

• Talk together as parents: Ideally, choose a calm moment where you can both be present and honest with your children. Present a united front, and emphasise that even though your relationship has changed, your love for them remains constant.

• Keep it age-appropriate: Explain things in a way your child can understand. For younger children, focus on the practical changes, like where they'll live or how they'll see the other parent. Teenagers may need more emotional support and space to express their feelings.

• Reassure them it's not their fault: Children can blame themselves for breakups. Make it clear that the separation has nothing to do with anything they have done.

• Answer their questions: Ask them to express their feelings, whether it's sadness, anger, or confusion. Listen patiently and answer honestly.

• Maintain routines: Where possible, stick to familiar routines and schedules. This can provide a sense of stability during a time of change.

• Seek support for yourself and your children: Don't be afraid to ask for help from therapists, family support groups, or even friends who have been through a similar experience.

Don’t

• Badmouth one another: Avoid negativity about your ex-partner in front of the children. This can make them feel conflicted towards both parents.

• Involve them in adult decisions: Don't burden your children with adult decisions about living arrangements or finances.

• Use them as messengers: It's not appropriate to use your children to communicate with your ex-partner.

• Make promises you can't keep: Avoid unrealistic promises about how things will be the same.

• Put off the conversation: Don't delay discussing this. Choose a time when everyone is calm, and be prepared to answer all questions.

From a legal perspective, the more amicably the separation and divorce can be put in place, the better it is for everyone involved. Here are a few points we think you should bear in mind.

The help your family needs to grow back stronger.

Divorce and separation are traumatic experiences for any family. However, with the right guidance, your family’s future can become stronger than ever.

Parental responsibility

When couples separate, it's important to understand and agree on how parental responsibility will be shared. This includes decisions regarding their education, healthcare, and well-being. In general, both parents have parental responsibility, but your solicitor can give you advice on how to proceed if this is unclear. Child arrangements orders

If there's disagreement about how much time your child will spend with each parent, a court order called a "Child Arrangements Order" can be obtained that sets out a schedule that needs to be followed. Again, your solicitor can advise you on how to proceed with this.

Mediation:

We always advise clients to consider mediation. It can be a helpful way to find some common ground with your ex-partner and try to agree on issues like finances and living arrangements.

The Montessori School, Edinburgh for children aged 6-12, opened in Murrayfield in March 2023 in response to demand from our long established community of families at The Montessori Nursery School who were passionate about the opportunity to extend their children’s Montessori experiences into the primary years.

At The Montessori School, Edinburgh we follow the Montessori Curriculum and the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence. We take a holistic approach to learning which aims to support the development of the whole child and recognises the importance of all aspects of development; physical, social, emotional and cognitive. We aim for pupils to develop a love of learning and to be selfmotivated in their journey.

Our teachers plan individually for each child based on their ability and interests and deliver presentations, in small groups, providing the opportunity for children to work collaboratively. In our peaceful classroom, behaviour is managed respectfully using positive language and without rewards or punishments. Abstract concepts are taught using beautiful tangible Montessori materials which support depth of understanding. Pupils are not assigned homework and are assessed through teacher observation rather than formal testing.

The school’s approach to the curriculum as well as learning, teaching and assessment has been praised by the inspectors at Education Scotland in their report which can be viewed on our website.

Choosing a Montessori environment for your child has many benefits. At our school we foster independence, empathy and a joy for lifelong learning while supporting the child to learn at a pace that suits them. This emphasis on self-directed learning in a multi-age setting not only encourages individual intellectual and emotional growth but also prepares the child to head out into the world with courtesy, respect, positive decision-making skills and confidence…..skills that will never leave them.

To register for our forthcoming Open Day and to arrange a visit, please email: info@themontessorinurseryschool.com

Clifton Hall School provides an education that is based on the perceived needs of each child. It is a school which has small classes and these offer opportunities for detailed educational provision for each child. Parents and staff welcome this feature of the school and see it as a significant educational aspect of the school.

There is an orientation towards the education of the whole child, including the intellectual, social, moral and physical growth of the child. Particular attention is given to their wider needs taking account of family support and the wider social environment of each child. The school sees itself as engaged in developing and forming “the whole child” capable of meeting the challenges and opportunities of further years of secondary education – wherever that may take place.

The values of Clifton Hall School are concerned with caring, challenging and supporting the child. There is an expectation of helping the child as an autonomous learner, safe in the knowledge that the staff and environment of the school will provide support as and when necessary. Attention is given to developing children as confident, participating citizens in a world of rapid, unceasing and uncertain change.

The curriculum of the school is characterised by two main distinguishing features. Firstly it is holistic, dealing with the whole child; and secondly it is inspired by the relationships that are created in learning and teaching. The “how” of education is given prominence along with the “what.” These are not separate but related aspects of educational provision.

Particular attention is given to the balance of the curriculum. Due prominence is given to Language and Mathematics. There is also keen attention to the wider areas of the curriculum.

The school recognises the essential nature of the whole experience of students. There is therefore due weight given to extra-curricular experiences such as in debates, sports, drama and outdoor education. These are undertaken by teaching staff and by additional staffing brought in for the purpose. These cannot be thought of as “optional extras” but rather a feature of the Clifton Hall educational experience.

There is a very positive ethos of learning that surrounds all activities and enhances the learners in every respect. After-school clubs are vibrant and well managed.

We consider Clifton Hall’s major strength is in the relationships that are created across the school, for it is these relationships that the values of the school are carried.

Come and see the school for yourself and witness the transformative effect our culture and environment has had on our pupils. Admissions for J1 and S1 entry for August 24 still being actively encouraged.

Rod Grant Headmaster

George Watson’s College sits in the city, providing a world-class education for children and young people from Preschool to Senior 6.

We encourage our pupils to develop a love of learning through an inspiring curriculum and an extensive and inclusive enrichment programme, which are underpinned by the four values we live by: aim high, be kind, join in and respect all.

Our school is a place where pupils have the freedom to thrive, succeed, explore, perform, and grow, giving them the opportunity to discover their own limitless potential. Preschool, junior and senior pupils all learn and play on the same 52 acre campus, where they have access to our sports facilities, music school, art department, technology building, drama studio, and more. We offer our pupils one of the widest extra-curricular programmes you will find anywhere, plus the opportunity to travel internationally during their time with us, and a broad range of learning experiences outside the classroom.

Life at Watson’s is about so much more than lessons. Our school has an enviable reputation for the breadth of opportunities pupils have to get active, with around 25 different sports available to both girls and boys. Participation, excellence, professionalism and equality are the four cornerstones of our physical education and sport department here at Watson’s.

When it comes to music and drama, our pupils are given the opportunity to co-produce stunning shows, delivering memorable performances that live long beyond school days.

Most importantly, the wellbeing of our pupils matters to us more than anything else. There are various ways we support pupils to proactively manage their mental health, while a range of peer-led programmes has created a culture in which we can all play our part. All this means that when the sun shines we celebrate the happy moments, and when it doesn’t we’re there to protect and support, just as our motto says: ex corde caritas - love from the heart. Open Morning Saturday 5 October

As a result, our students leave us as grounded, resilient, and accomplished individuals, ready to make a positive impact on the world. We are passionate about giving our children the very best opportunities, and for us that starts on day one. From age three, we welcome children into the ESMS family, where they immediately begin to benefit from all the resources our three schools have to offer. Our purpose-built Early Years Centre provides a safe, homely environment in which our children take their first educational steps.

In our Nursery rooms for four-year-olds, each child is nurtured in all aspects of their development by fully qualified teachers and experienced early years staff. This is supplemented by regular sessions with specialist staff in Music, PE, and Digital Learning. Every room has direct access to our extensive Nursery garden, and the children enjoy weekly Forest Kindergarten expeditions, exploring everything our wider grounds have to offer.

Our approach is rooted in building strong relationships between children, families, and staff, ensuring a seamless transition from Nursery to Primary 1. As the children run up the path in the morning, hints of life beyond Nursery are everywhere: Senior students enjoy team sports on the nearby pitches, Primary children run up the path with their friends, and our specialist teachers greet everyone as they move across the site to work with different year groups.

The dedicated teachers and specialist staff are the School’s greatest asset. Their passion inspires the children to be curious and innovative thinkers, giving them the confidence to explore extraordinary opportunities and discover their unique passions. Our extensive Music and Drama programme earned us the 2023 Independent Schools of the Year Award in the Performing Arts, Music, and Drama category.

A Voice for Opportunity

As Edinburgh’s only 3-18 girls’ school, St George’s is a place of possibilities.

The courage of our founding mothers, who pioneered women’s education in Victorian Scotland, still echoes defiantly through our corridors. That’s why amplifying the voice of every girl remains part of our DNA today. Everyone here is respected, appreciated and treated with genuine compassion –thanks to exceptional pastoral care which nurtures close-knit pupil-teacher relationships.

We consider ourselves big on ambition for our pupils, yet we still know that small details matter. Excellent relationships, interest in every individual and a strong community mean each and every girl can find their passion and talents.

Situated in central Edinburgh, our school boasts all its facilities on a single, walkable campus, in spacious parkland. St George's has a wide-ranging curriculum: a unique mix of GCSEs at 16 followed by Highers and Advanced Highers in S5 and S6. We tailor curriculums for individual needs, offering choice and flexibility across academic and co-curricular options; expertly guided by familiar teachers.

Our careful attention to each developmental stage from 3-18, means girls experience an abundance of opportunity, strong female role-models and leadership expertise all through the school, utterly free from stereotypes. We are specialists in teaching girls, leading to academic success in all subjects, including STEM and with an impressive 90% sports participation rate all the way to Upper Sixth.

Last year, 99% of our girls achieve their first-choice university: leaving us as grounded, empathetic change-makers, ready to take on the world.

We offer a scholarship programme for academic, art, music and sport scholarships from S1 (12+). Visit our website to learn about the benefits of being a St George's Scholar and read inspirational student stories. Arrange a visit via our website www.stge.org.uk or please get in touch with our Admissions Team tel 0131 311 8008, email, admissions@stge.org.uk

Through our diverse yet rigorous curriculum and incredible range of cocurricular activities, we pride ourselves on helping boys and girls to excel in mind, body and spirit, enabling them to realise their full potential.

Our pupils enjoy comprehensive academic, pastoral and sporting facilities including our world-class Golf Academy, which attracts global talent due to its rich history, facilities and US College programme. We provide exceptional opportunities throughout our classrooms, concert halls, theatres, pitches and courts. At Loretto every child is treated as an individual and their unique talents recognised, fostered and encouraged.

Just like our school, our Open Days are kept purposefully small, allowing you to experience for yourself Loretto’s exceptional campus and community. We would love to invite you to join us for a relaxed visit, chatting with our senior team and teaching staff, followed by a personalised tour of the campus, designed with your child’s interests and future in mind.

George Heriot’s opened its doors in 1658 for the education of Edinburgh’s ‘faitherless bairns’, made possible through the generosity of jeweller to James VI, George Heriot. We are proud to welcome young people from across Scottish society, especially Foundationers, children of widows and widowers, who live in Edinburgh and its environs. These pupils are a key part of our story as Edinburgh’s oldest independent school. ‘Giving’ remains at the heart of the school today in our Foundation and motto: I distribute chearfullie.

Heriot’s leads Scottish education with its golden legacy of high quality academic attainment and its focus on kindness, pupil wellbeing and care. This was recognised in the exceptional results of our recent Education Scotland Inspection:

‘The School has sector leading approaches to ensuring inclusion and equality for children and young people.’

‘Young people’s overall attainment in their National Qualifications is outstanding.’

‘Young people feel safe, happy and have every opportunity to learn and thrive.’

Please see the Education Scotland website for the full report https://education.gov.scot/.

Heriot’s welcomes children aged 4 to 18 (Nursery to S6) in a co-educational setting and progressively develops critical and creative thinking. Heriot’s values are simple: work hard, be kind, be yourself. It is these values which bind our pupils and staff together to create a cohesive culture. Conveniently a city centre school, we have beautiful grounds and open spaces. Our Junior and Senior School classrooms are purposefully located together on one campus, reinforcing a strong community feeling.

Through our extensive range of curricular and co-curricular subjects and activities, our emphasis is on developing each child’s potential and encouraging them to grow to be their best self. We have high expectations of our young people; we want them to thrive, enjoy their learning and care about one other.

Our Open Morning is on Saturday 28 September 2024. Our pupils proudly volunteer to give up their Saturday to show prospective pupils and parents their School. Join us to discover the warm community that is George Heriot’s School. Please visit our website (www.george-heriots.com) and sign up.

Visitors are also welcome during term time, so you have the opportunity to look around the school, to feel the Heriot’s ethos and meet key staff members to answer your queries. Please contact the Admissions Office on 0131 221 6709 or admission@george-heriots.com to arrange a visit or to find out more about the admissions process.

Choosing a school for your child is a very important decision. Our most important publicity comes from our current and former pupils and parents so do please feel free to speak to them! We look forward to meeting you and helping you discover what is behind the stones.

How many schools do you know that develop critical and creative thinking from Nursery to S6

The Edinburgh Academy

Situated on Henderson Row, The Edinburgh Academy reaches its milestone 200th birthday in 2024–25

We are an HMC 2–18 school, situated on two sites a short distance apart; and with our playing fields on a third – giving us plenty of space for pupils to grow and thrive, as well as ready access to the bustling, vibrant Scottish capital. Our young people develop into former pupils – Accies – by a holistic educational experience built upon our ACCIE values of Ambition, Compassion, Collaboration, Integrity, and Engagement.

We feel like a small school and are proud of the personalised, individualised approach we can offer our families. From the very start, pupils follow a broad, balanced curriculum that gradually but persistently allows pupil to explore the world and to flourish as people. They achieve excellent outcomes, in terms of raw academic results, and in their destinations post-EA; and along the way, are supported to make subject and career-focused decisions, as well as being cared for, supported, and challenged.

‘Every decision we make is influenced by our character, the values we have and our virtues that drive the behaviour and choices we make. Becoming character literate, knowing how to grow and train yourself for whatever lies ahead, is an essential part of human development and enables society to grow and flourish.’ – Jen Isherwood, Head of Outdoor Learning and Character Education

In today's digital era, children are constantly surrounded by screens. While technology definitely offers educational benefits, excessive screen time is linked to attention deficits, reduced creativity, and diminished social skills. It's crucial for primary teachers to reclaim hands-on learning, providing children with essential real-world experiences.

Hands-on learning offers a unique, irreplaceable educational form. Activities like digging in the dirt, building with blocks, or conducting real experiments engage all senses and foster deep, meaningful learning. Studies reveal that time spent in nature enhances cognitive function, attention span, and emotional well-being (Louv, 2005). These experiences develop fine motor skills, spark curiosity, and lay the foundation for lifelong learning and success.

In our eagerness to embrace technology, we risk disconnecting children from nature, the most enriching classroom. Outdoor exploration, combined with academic activities, offers endless opportunities for discovery and wonder. Immersing children in nature awakens their curiosity and appreciation for the world, allowing them to apply classroom learning to real-life situations. Creating a hands-on learning environment requires a shift in mindset and practice. Implementing project-based learning, asking ‘big’ enquiry questions and integrating experiential activities into the curriculum infuses education with real-world experiences. Fostering a culture of curiosity, experimentation, and discovery empowers children to become active participants in their education, teaching them patience, determination, and problem-solving skills. In a screen-saturated world, we must not forget the unparalleled value of hands-on learning. From sparking creativity to fostering resilience and problem-solving skills, real-world activities offer children a depth of understanding screens cannot replicate. As teachers, let's prioritise tangible experiences over virtual ones, empowering children to engage meaningfully with the world. While technology is vital, it should be integrated as standalone subjects rather than tools in every lesson, particularly where unnecessary for learning enhancement.
