From 5th December 2016, it will be illegal for anyone to smoke in a car if you have passengers aged 18 or under. The new legislation is being introduced to protect children and young people in Scotland from the harm caused by second hand smoke during car journeys. If caught, the driver of the vehicle could face a £100 fixed penalty fine. Around a fifth of 13 to 15 year olds are exposed to tobacco smoke in the car. If you smoke whilst children and young people are in a car, even with the window open, the level of harmful chemicals reach very high levels in only 60 seconds. Reducing exposure to second hand smoke protects children and young people from conditions such as bronchiolitis, pneumonia and asthma.

montessori mornings Having taught in Montessori pre-schools, Sorour and Rosita created Montessori Mornings, a place where parents and children can spend quality time on structured activities along the method developed by Maria Montessori. The space is set up with beautiful materials from the five curriculum areas displayed so children can see and choose their favourites. Every session there is also a group activity, art and a snack table where children can have a go and eventually serve themselves. "Children who come regularly for a while know what to do. When they have freedom to choose, they become really engaged, and with this balance of order and freedom, you can see them bloom into capable, confident and in-control little people." Montessori Mornings runs on Mondays and Thursdays in Bruntsfield from 9:30-11:15, including mid-term school breaks. And look out for their new Stockbridge location opening soon! Find them on Facebook or visit the website www.montessorimornings.com

Prepare kids for the fight against flu Parents are being urged to prepare their children for the fight against flu as the latest national childhood flu vaccination programme gets underway. As health professionals warn there is the potential for this year’s flu season to be serious, children aged 2-5 can get vaccinated at their GP practice from October. Every year in Scotland, children are hospitalised for treatment of flu, or its complications. The vaccine helps protect children against flu, and is given as a painless nasal spray. It only takes a few minutes, and provides protection for around a year. To find out more about the childhood flu vaccine and its benefits, visit www.immunisationscotland.org.uk/childflu or call NHS Inform on 0800 22 44 88.

It’s back! Camera Obscura and World of Illusions will once again transform itself into the place to be for toddlers (and their grown-ups) from 13th - 22nd January. Teeny Tiny Toddler Fest was so popular in January 2016 that it’ll be bigger, better and longer in 2017. Christmas…. Why books make perfect presents for children by Claire Bottomley They may not deliver the biggest instant wow factor when ripped from shiny wrapping, but books are what children will return to, and lose themselves in, time after time. Watch how a person’s face lights up when they tell you about their favourite children’s book, and then decide if books are the most magical present in the world! And older children don’t have to be keen independent readers to appreciate the right book as a gift. If it’s well-chosen with them in mind, about something that enthuses them or captures their imagination, you’re on to a winner. First though, a few dos and don’ts: •

Don’t worry about duplicating. Chances are, they may already have a popular, well-known book, but it is actually quite useful to have more than one copy. One for upstairs by their bed and another for downstairs in the daytime, or one to keep at a grandparent’s home.

Do write in them. It’s a lovely, personal touch to write in the inside sleeve or cover of a book. “Happy Christmas 2016, with love from Aunty Emma,” is something they will look back on with fondness in years to come.

Do buy them books about something they’re interested in, especially as they get older. Books about sports, dance, Minecraft or pets are great for junior enthusiasts. Remember they don’t have to be fiction books and factual books often go down really well.

Don’t worry if they don’t seem to like it. It might be that they will come back to it and discover it on another day….or maybe it’s just not for them. The thought was there and we are all individuals with our own tastes and preferences – children are no different. Getting the opportunity to try a wide range of reading material is the main thing, and books can easily be passed on to another friend or relative who might like it more.

LISa peTTerSSon Edinburgh artist Lisa Pettersson keeps delighting parents and grandparents with striking and unique paintings of their children. ‘The portraits were a side line to doing other painting, but this time of the year they take up all my time, they have been a real success. It’s something different and more unique than a photograph, and at the same time the prices are very good for an original piece of art.’ Ordering is easy, Lisa works from jpegs or prints that the customer sends, and recreates the picture in paint on coloured paper, in her unique pop art style. Her own young children have also featured in many portraits ‘I like working from photos that are special to me, of the kids in a moment that I treasure. The same goes for the photos my customers’ send me of their children – I enjoy recreating their personal happy moments.’ Prices start from £90 for an approx. A4 image (including a white mount). You can see more of Lisa’s work, including previous commissions, on her website www.lisapettersson.com email: lisa@lisapettersson.com

ThaI maSSaGe reVIew On a particularly grey and drizzly day I headed to Knotstressed. It had been a week of not enough sleep and too much work. I think “grumpy” would be a fair assessment of my mood. I’d never had a Thai massage and so it was quite exciting to head off to try something new. I’d had a quick google and found it described as “lazy person yoga”. Sounded good - I like yoga and while I don’t think of myself as lazy, the benefits of yoga while lying down? Yeah, I’ll take that. The Thai massage as Knotstressed takes place in their group space, a gorgeous high ceilinged room which would be lovely to do yoga in. Thai massage takes place fully clothed on a mat on the floor. It involves a flowing sequence of yoga-like stretches during which the practitioner uses hands, elbows, knees and feet to firmly apply pressure to soft tissue to release tension and allow freer movement. Despite being fully clothed I actually found the experience more intimate than more traditional massage experiences. Luckily Juan really put me at ease so I was happy to to put my trust in him as he lifted and gently moved joints and limbs. By keeping my eyes gently closed, and not trying to second guess what was coming next, I could let my body go into a kind of rag-doll state while Juan applied a rolling pressure. Pressure can be deep yet is always applied in a sensitive way and Juan checked to make sure he was getting it right for me. The aim of a Thai Massage is to release muscular tension and support overall relaxation. Apparently it’s common to feel energised and invigorated after a session. Usually I’m a bit bleary eyed and jelly headed after a massage. While I did have concerns I’d be able to actually stand (as my limbs felt very rubbery!) I actually ended up walking from Knotstressed all the way to the Usher Hall. So yes, I’d say fair to say energised! Just in case you’re not quite ready to head into the outside world though you are welcome to stay in their relaxation space with tea, snacks and a book and chill out. If you like a deep, stretchy massage this is the one for you. Take advantage of their festive offer - £60 for a 2 hour Deep Tissue Thai Massage. www.knotstressed.com KnotStressed Therapies Clinic, 40-42 Montrose Terrace, Edinburgh EH7 5DL

Christmas Shows

aLIce In wonderLand 26 November - 31 December In a new version created and directed by Anthony Neilson. Composer Nick Powell “Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.” When Alice sees a snappily dressed white rabbit holding a pocket watch, she knows today is not going to be like any other – an adventure is beginning! Follow Alice down the rabbit hole and tumble into Wonderland - a place where everyone and everything seems to be stark raving mad and things keep getting ‘curiouser and curiouser’. There are drinks to make you shrink smaller and cakes which make you grow taller. You’ll meet a mad March Hare, see a cat disappear, take advice from a caterpillar, and that’s just the animals! Will Alice ever be able to solve the Mad Hatter’s riddles or will it be ‘Off with her head!’ at the Queen of Hearts’ command? Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has been the best loved of all children’s stories for over 150 years. This Christmas The Lyceum will bring Lewis Carroll’s classic to life with a magical new production in a magnificent Victorian setting. Recommended for all ages 5 and upwards.
