NEW SUPPORT FOR MOTHERS The North London-based Silvia Latham Consultancy is launching a brand new workshop especially designed for mothers. The course supports personal growth with practical exercises and simple techniques of self-awareness. Mothers will learn lifelong skills to become self-reliant and regain control and confidence in their relationships with others. ‘Being a mother is special,’ Silvia Latham

BECOME A MUMPRENEUR! A growing number of mums are setting up their own businesses to find a better work life balance. Many work from home, but what should you consider before embarking on a home-based business? One of the drawbacks is possible feelings of isolation. If you are a good self motivator this will not be a problem, but isolation can be hard to deal with. The solution is to use social networking to get regular online contact with people working in related fields to your business, and to make contact with local business groups. Try to make sure you get out and about

PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN FROM ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION We’ve all heard that mobiles may carry health risks, and although most of the research into mobile phones and phone masts has found no effect on human health, few researchers look specifically at the effects of phone radiation on children and young people. ‘Invisible radio frequency radiation can alter living cells and create the same types of damage that we know increase the risk of cancer and neurological disease,’ says Dr Devra Davis, public

too. Use social networking to arrange face to face meetings. Ensure you have childcare in place. It is very difficult to work when trying to look after children. Keep your work station separate from family life. If possible, install a second business-only phone line, or you could use a virtual office assistant. Also ensure you have a good broadband connection and back-up if your computer goes down. And lastly, work out your hours! One danger of homeworking is overwork. Make sure you get enough rest and don’t burn out. Visit Workingmums LIVE in March, a one-stop shop for flexible work options. www.WorkingMumsLive.co.uk

health specialist and author of Disconnect: The Truth About Cell Phone radiation. ‘Our children are growing up in a sea of radio frequency radiation that did not exist five years ago,’ she adds, and there is a belief that children are more susceptible because their brain tissue is still growing and their skulls are thinner. In France, research that exposure to carcinogens in young people comes with more serious risks than for adults has led to the decision to ban primary school children from using mobiles, and discouraging phone advertising aimed at children. They are also removing wireless communication systems from public places such as libraries. Until the science becomes clearer we might follow the advice of Dr Davis: keep calls on mobile phones short, text rather than call, never carry a live mobile next to your body and always use a headset. You can see her advice to teenagers at www.environmentalhealthtrust.org, or check out the guidance from a group of concerned parents who have looked closely at the science: www.wiredchild.org

said. ‘It involves high responsibility and commitment. We have our own needs and aspirations and yet we have to look after our children, carry out our daily chores and take care of others. Juggling all these multiple roles is demanding and our needs often come last. Negative thinking, mood swings and self-doubt sometimes get in the way. I offer practical tools to dispel negative attitudes and mobilise our inner resources.’ To find out more contact Silvia on 07985 465031 or visit www.silvialatham.com

ALMOST THERE – AN INCUBATOR FOR THE WHITTINGTON HOSPITAL! World-class musicians came together in December to perform at an incredible Gala Concert at London’s Cadogan Hall, raising money to purchase the much needed incubator for the Whittington Hospital in Archway. The Lenny Trusler Children’s Foundation (LTCF) is dedicated to helping provide the relief of serious illness in newborn babies and infants, and their latest mission was to raise money to purchase an incubator for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Whittington. The fundraising efforts have almost achieved it... The Giraffe Omnibed incubator provides uncompromised access, making medical procedures easier to perform. At the touch of a button, the Omnibed can be converted from an incubator to a radiant warmer. The versatility of this bed allows a baby to remain in it throughout their NICU stay. This eliminates stress and trauma that may be incurred when a baby is moved from bed to

bed. For all of these reasons, the Omnibed is a tremendous asset that will improve the quality of care that can be provided by the Whittington Hospital. The LTCF was created by violinists Matthew Trusler and Maya Koch after the death of their baby son from a rare kidney disease in April 2007. Matthew Trusler said ‘Our concert and auction on the 1st December was altogether an overwhelming experience for Maya and me. To have had this group of world class performers together with such a warm and generous audience, all supporting a cause which is so important to us was just amazing. The auction alone raised £12,000, and combined with all the donations we received, ticket sales and programme advertising we look like being very close indeed to our target.....’ Please log on to www.ltcf.co.uk for more information about the foundation, and to make a donation today!

‘WRAP AROUND’ CHILDCARE FOR WORKING MUMS Mothers wishing to continue working fulltime – but who can’t afford full-time childcare – are being offered a new ‘wrap around’ service through a web-based venture. Nicky Grant’s company – www. afterschoolcare.co.uk – will match parents with experienced child carers to look after their kids both before and after school. As well as nannies, nursery nurses and teachers, Nicky also attracts students, part-time workers as well as grandmothers with a wealth of child raising experience and a bit of time to spare. After School Care was set up by Nicky in response to her own experience and research, indicating that working women with school aged children don’t want to employ a full time nanny and are increasingly looking for part time care – particularly before and after school. Parents can register their own details and see the carers that are available in their area – £10 per month gives them unlimited searches within a 30 day period. Matches are brought up on a ‘nearest match’ basis first – according to location and availability. More details can be found at www.afterschoolcare.co.uk

news NEW FUN FRENCH CLASS FOR ADULTS

SAVE THE ARTSDEPOT On Friday 3 December, Barnet Council announced their proposal to cut all core funding to artsdepot, the only professional arts venue in the borough. At an already difficult time, this leaves the future of artsdepot in an increasingly vulnerable position. artsdepot has always strived not to be dependent on one core funder, earning around half of its income itself through, amongst other things, box office sales and hires. Around a further 25% of funding comes from private trusts and foundations who value its work. However, the late notice of this announcement makes it incredibly difficult for the venue to

5

plan for the consequences of the proposed cuts. The venue has been recognised by the Mayor of London as a beacon of excellence, and by Arts Council England as a vitally important part of the capital’s cultural provision. In 2009/2010, more than 110,000 people came through artsdepot’s doors, and the education and outreach departments worked with groups including young people with disabilities, refugees, young offenders, people with dementia and those excluded from mainstream education. artsdepot are urging anyone concerned about this decision to sign the online petition, a link to which can be found at artsdepot.co.uk, and to write to local councillors outlining their concerns.

Choosing a Nursery By Robina Cowan

Nurseries with the best reputations tend to be hot property, and baby units are more scarce than places for 2-5 year-olds, so start looking well ahead of the time you’ll need a place, and join a waiting list if necessary. Some mothers start while they are still pregnant; others wait until their child is a babe in arms and they have a better idea of what they need. If you don’t know of any local nurseries, do try our advertisers – they’re here because they want you to know about them. Families North also have a fantastic online directory of nurseries (www.familiesnorth.co.uk). Otherwise, the Families Information Service can supply a list of registered childcarers in your area (Telephone 0800 2346 346 and online www.direct.gov.uk/childcare). YOUR CHILD’S NEEDS Once you’ve drawn up a shortlist of the nurseries you are considering, go and look around and ask lots of questions to see if they would suit your child. Although all nurseries follow Ofsted government guidelines, there is room for interpretation in the way the childcare and learning are delivered. For example, private nurseries might serve organic, freshly cooked meals or include additional activities such as dancing, French and outings. Consider issues such as your child’s daily routine (nap times, type of food provided etc), staff qualifications and experience, staff to child ratios and what the staff turnover is like. Find out if there are any extra charges for nappies, meals, certain activities and the cost of the deposit to go on the waiting list.

Factor in the time it will take you to travel to and from the nursery, probably during rush hour. After all this, the most important thing is to absorb the atmosphere and look at whether the children are relaxed and happy, and members of staff are responsive and caring. NURSERIES IN A NUTSHELL Daycare nurseries UÊ Ê ÊÕÃivÕ Ê «Ì Êv ÀÊÜ À }Ê«>Ài ÌÃ]Ê day nurseries are typically open from 8am to early evening and children can stay for all or part of the day UÊ Ê- iÊ«>Ài ÌÃÊvii ÊÕ i>ÃÞÊ>L ÕÌÊ leaving their baby in sole care, no matter how well-qualified that person is. The cons: Some offer wrap-around care but are generally open only for school hours so you will need someone to pick up and collect if you are at work. HELP WITH THE COSTS Nursery fees vary greatly, depending on location, demand and what is offered, but can be from around £100 to over £200 a week. 1. WHAT PARENTS SAY ABOUT NURSERIES Hands-on owners: ‘I would always go for an owner-run nursery. These people are not ‘in it for the money’. They are doing the job because they genuinely like and understand children. It’s a vocational thing.’ Mary, mother of three under six. Socialisation: ‘Although I’m not at work, from the age of two I felt it was important for my son to start learning to get on with a range of other children and adults, to help him when he started school.’ Matt, father of Ollie, three. Experienced staff: ‘Look at the ages of the staff. Youngsters fresh out of college may have more energy and I’m sure they know all the latest thinking on childcare but in my opinion that’s no substitute for experience.’ Clara, mother of three under seven. Explore all options: ‘Go and see as many different nurseries as you can. Don’t get tied up in the Ofsted report and what other people think. You know your child better than anyone.’ Ramona, mother of Klaus, five.

Nursery care for babies Mothers returning to work early are faced with the dilemma of choosing nursery care for babies as young as three months. Recent figures have shown that one side effect of the credit crunch is that more mothers are intending to return to work earlier because of concerns about money. 70% of mums at home are considering returning to work and a third would like to be working right now. This of course raises the question of who will care for the children, especially the very young. Fortunately for families in Highbury and Highgate one of the options is Little Angels Day Nurseries and Pre-prep schools. Little Angels cater for children from 3 months to 5 years and offer special care for the very young including one-toone care whilst children settle in. Little Angels staff to child ratio is amongst the highest in London, so babies in particular are always closely supervised by qualified and enhanced CRB police checked carers. Both nurseries feature sensory and exploration activities that help babies thrive and develop. In addition there are

permanent cot rooms to accommodate babies individual sleep routines. Little Angels works closely with parents to adapt to ‘their babies’ daily routines including a chef and experienced staff, which will support parents through the weaning process. Little Angels has an open door policy that allows parents to ‘drop in and out’ during the day unannounced to spend time with their children. In their last Ofsted inspection under the heading of ‘Helping children achieve well and enjoy what they do’, the inspector found ‘The provision is outstanding. Babies and young children have regular opportunities to play and eat together which means that they are

‘We are delighted to be able to help mothers with this difficult decision, by providing secure loving care for their babies.’

learning to communicate and develop good relationships. Education news MAKING THE JOURNEY TOGETHER The Challenge Playgroup runs on Friday mornings, in St James Church Hall, Muswell Hill. It is run for children with additional needs, and their siblings – and with an added slant – for their parents, carers and grandparents too. In a quiet haven next door to the designated play area, is a sanctuary of fresh flowers, bean bags – and absolute quiet – parents can sit in here and read a newspaper, retreat into their own thoughts, or even have a massage most weeks, whilst a CRB checked adult plays with their child next door. Alternatively, having a child with additional needs can isolate you from the rest of the community, and here you can talk to other parents with similar issues. The dedicated team of volunteers include an occupational therapist, a physiotherapist, and child psychotherapist. Originally the brainchild of Celia Webster, whose own daughter’s development was much delayed, she knows only too well the feelings that having such a child can instil. ‘People can relax if their child has difficult behaviour, and know their child won’t be judged or seen as different’. The Playgroup is a Christian organisation that welcomes people of all faiths, or none, coming under the auspices of St James Church, with their funding. There is no charge to come, and the Playgroup runs from 10am to 11.30am every Friday, during term time. Visit www.challengeplaygroup.org.uk

MAKE TIMES TABLES FASHIONABLE! We’ve all seen children with those funny bundles of brightly coloured, novelty shaped bands around their wrists, swapping and collecting with their friends. Now here is a new idea that parents everywhere are sure to prefer, and designed to help all children remember their times tables! Multibandz are skinny wristbands designed as a fun and fashionable accessory for children up to 12 years old. They are printed with the multiplication times tables from one to 12 and are available in a range of funky and bright colours. Michael Randall, founder of Handband,

AUDITORY PROCESSING DISORDER EXPLAINED By Usha Patel of Raviv Practice, London Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is a condition where those with normal hearing constantly mishear what is said. Whilst APD is of neurological nature and may be inherited, research has also shown that early childhood ear infections can be a significant contributory factor in causing it. Children develop critical language skills between the ages of 6 months to 3 years. Language centres within the brain learn to map out sounds and store them for language processing. When a child starts reacting to words with a smile or start speaking its first words, it is effectively associating these sounds with meanings. If a child suffers from constant middle ear infection during the critical period, then the ability to process language/speech can be affected. Sounds normally imprinted in the brain’s memory are then not properly established. The mishearing happens because the brain recognises aural

Multibandz parent company, comments: ‘These wristbands have been designed to encourage children to learn in a fun and inventive way. The great thing about Multibandz is that children can start with the 1x table and are rewarded with a new wristband as they work their way up the numbers, which encourages them to learn.’ Several of the wristbands glow in the dark and the 11 and 12 times table wristbands come in silver and gold. The recommended retail price (RRP) for a pack of 12 Multibandz is ÂŁ7.68. For further information, please visit www.multibandz.co.uk. information differently to what they actually are. A good example is commonly found when children can’t differentiate between thirteen and thirty. Whilst hearing can be perfectly normal their brain just cannot process those sounds accurately due to their similarity. This inability of the brain to process what is heard accurately results in the Auditory Processing Disorder condition. The National Institute of Health do offer some useful suggestions to help such environmental modifications and auditory memory enhancement. Exercises to improve language-building skills can increase the ability to learn new words and increase a child’s language base. The Raviv Practice London offers a structured language programme called Fast ForWord. This is a computer based learning program where the individual works on the program, and results are carefully monitored by the therapist remotely. Raviv Practice London has a newly opened centre in Finchley. For further details visit: www.ravivpracticelondon.co.uk or register for the FREE presentation on APD on the 26th /27th January 2011.

education news HARINGEY JEWISH PRIMARY Just over a year ago, a group of parents in Muswell Hill started discussing the idea of a new kind of primary school: a Jewish school where everybody would be welcome, irrespective of their faith. it’s a revolutionary idea, because traditional Jewish faith schools are exclusive environments. But in the interest of inter-faith harmony, peace and understanding, we felt that it was important to break down some of those barriers. Now, fourteen months later, Haringey Jewish Primary School is one of the first of the new Free Schools to be approved by the government, over 250 children’s names have been registered, and their doors are expected to open for their first Reception class in September 2011. The school will be built on a 1.5 acre plot of land on Creighton Avenue, Muswell Hill, directly opposite Coldfall Wood. For the full story visit their website: www.haringeyjewishprimary.com

pregnancy

Pregnancy: A Nutritional Guide by Kirsten Davies

From the moment of conception and throughout pregnancy, a growing baby gets all of its nourishment from the mother through the umbilical cord. So what you eat, as well as what you do not eat, is very important. If the mother is lacking in any vitamins and nutrients her baby might lack them too. Protein Your body requires slightly more protein when you are pregnant, to cope with the growth of your baby (babies’ skin is made from protein). Healthy sources are found in Fish, lean meat, yogurt, eggs, soya, quinoa, lentils, seeds, peas, beans, broccoli. Try not to rely entirely on animal sources, as too much can be rather acidic. Carbohydrates This is the body’s preferred source of energy, so ensure you eat enough to help sustain energy levels. They help give your baby energy to grow and develop. Healthy sources are found in brown rice, wholemeal pasta, wholegrain bread, oats, rye bread, beans, lentils, potatoes, sweet potatoes, fruit and vegetables. Essential fats 60% of our brain is made out of essential fatty acids (Omega 3 and 6), so you can see how important it is when your baby’s brain is growing. It is also important for a baby’s developing nervous system. Healthy sources are found in Omega 3 – oily fish,

such as: trout, salmon, anchovies, herring, mackerel and pilchards. 6i}iÌ>À > Êà ÕÀViÃÊ V Õ`iÊy>ÝÃii`ÃÊ and enriched eggs. Omega 6 – «Õ « ]ÊÃiÃ> iÊ> `ÊÃÕ y ÜiÀÊÃii`Ã]Ê walnuts and almonds. Fibre Constipation during pregnancy can be caused by hormonal changes that cause the intestines to move less. Eat lots of fibre-rich foods such as fruit, vegetables, wholemeal bread and cereals, prunes and prune juice. Drinking at least 2 litres of water each day will also help prevent constipation by keeping stools moist. Regular exercise will also help to get the intestines moving. Supplements Taking a good antenatal vitamin and mineral supplement (such as BioCare Ante-Natal Forte) will ensure that all the nutrients are provided in a safe amount including folic acid (400mcg). However, these are not a substitute for a healthy diet, just a safeguard to protect you and your baby from deficiencies occurring. Foods to avoid UÊ Ê*@ÌjÃÊ> `Êà vÌÊÀ «i i`ÊV iiÃiðÊ/ iÃiÊ foods may contain Listeria, a strain of bacteria.

SUGAR ALTERNATIVES Xylitol is a natural alternative to sugar and sweetener. It is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol from plants, which is as sweet as sugar but has two thirds less calories. One of the benefits of Xylitol in comparison to sugar is that it has a very low GL. This means it does not upset the blood sugar balance as sugar does, this makes it less fattening and less likely to interrupt energy and concentration levels. It is safe for pregnant and nursing women, and studies show that regular use significantly reduces the probability of transmitting the streptococcus mutans bacteria, which is responsible for tooth decay, from mother to child during the first two years of life by as much as 80%. However too much can cause loose bowels so eat within reasonable limits!

CHILDHOOD OBESITY LINKED TO OVERWEIGHT MUMS According to recent research, infants born to overweight mothers use less energy than infants born to lean mothers. The study, published in the Nutrition Journal, also found that 3-6 month old infants, who were born to obese or overweight mothers had a greater body fat percentage and were heavier for their age than infants born to leaner mothers. These findings may be used to develop strategies to prevent future generations of childhood obesity.

need to obtain a number of hours in clinical practice skills. The students are insured to practice and are supervised by two experienced Homeopaths who observe the consultations. The clinics are by appointment only and run on one Thursday and Saturday of each month. Appointments are between 9am – 3pm. All Consultations are £20. The Homeopathic prescriptions are included in this charge. For further information or to make an appointment, please ring Jan Perivolas on 0208 348 1091. TIP OF THE MONTH To assist weight loss, eat a bowl of vegetable soup or a fresh vegetable salad (minus the creamy dressing!). Research shows consuming low calorie foods enhances satiety (food’s ability to satisfy hunger) and in turn reduces your energy intake at mealtimes – making it a great strategy for weight loss.

Fostering: Time to Care Foster care makes a positive difference to the lives of tens of thousands of children every year. However, since 2007 the number of children living with foster carers has risen by more than 6,000 when there was already a shortage of nearly £ä]äääÊv ÃÌiÀÊV>ÀiÀÃÊ>VÀ ÃÃÊÌ iÊ1 °Ê

This is putting the fostering system under immense pressure. As a result children are moved around the care system more, bringing further disruption to their lives. Some end up living with foster families who do not have the specific skills to meet their needs. Others have to move a long way from home, often separated from brothers and sisters, and may lose touch with family and friends. This will change if more people

come forward to be trained as skilled foster carers who can help to create a better future for society’s most vulnerable children. Now is the time to care. Look out for Fostering: Time to Care, Foster Care Fortnight (May 2011) which will highlight the urgent need for more foster carers, and call on everyone from political leaders to the general public to get behind fostering and support children in care. Foster Care Fortnight is run by the Fostering Network, the leading charity for everyone involved in foster V>Ài°Ê ÃÌiÀ }ÊÃiÀÛ ViÃÊ>VÀ ÃÃÊÌ iÊ1 Ê will be joining in and supporting the campaign. People come into fostering from lots of different backgrounds and with a huge range of experiences. Many come from previous careers in law, teaching and health care, for example, and others have child care experience with children in their own families and communities. Foster carers are as diverse as the children they look after, but they share a commitment to helping a vulnerable child transform their life. Snow or shine – plan family time! Ski-ing can be one of the best holidays for bringing families together. But plan the holiday carefully, to ensure provision has been made for all ages in the party travelling. The ski season is upon us, and whether you are planning a half term family ski expedition, or have preschool children and are lucky enough to be able to avoid the hiked-up prices and go off-peak – families all over North London will be hunting out the best bargains to get their families a much earned change of scenery. Ski-ing can be one of the best holidays for bringing families together. But plan the holiday carefully, to ensure provision has been made for all ages in the party travelling. Perhaps consider booking a nanny for your party who will look after all the little ones ‘in house’ rather than sending them off to crèches within the resort, which can sometimes be a rather daunting experience. By having in-house childcare you won’t waste valuable time ferrying kids around before you even get to the ski lifts yourself. Chilly Powder are a Morzine based ski company that offer the combination of comfort and luxury chalet accommodation, and brilliant in-house childcare. Snow Life La Clusaz also come highly recommended, with attentive staff to meet your families’ every need. Family ski specialists like Powder Byrne, Family Ski Company, Mark Warner and Ski Famille also put together some very

comprehensive packages that are worth investigating. See www.chillypowder.com for more information. So what about the older children that you are sending off to ski-school? Comfort, warmth and being wellequipped does make for far happier children in the freezing temperatures, so do think about purchasing the little extras like silk inner socks/mits for tiny frozen hands and feet! The re-usable hand-warmers that you can boil up are also great and last for several hours. We also love the Alpinestars Hydro back pack, a little ruck sack with handy water « ÕV ÊÜ Ì Ê }ÊyiÝ L iÊ`À }ÊÃÌÀ>ÜÊ attached, enabling you to stay hydrated whilst on the slopes without any fuss, perfect for little people. North London’s very own ‘Ski Wear Service’ can kit out the whole family in excellent quality, affordable ski attire, with all the extras you might need in one simple personal shopping experience, in a quiet residential street in the heart of Hampstead, or at their Park Royal showroom. Visit www.skiwearservice.co.uk to book an appointment. Children use up many extra calories just keeping warm in the arctic temperatures, so don’t forget to send off your young skiers with pocket sized energy-giving snacks, sun-screen and a few Euros in case of hot chocolate stops! For those embarking on first time ski holidays or needing to brush up on their skills, do invest in a few lessons at the excellent Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead, just a 20 minute drive up the M1 (five minutes from Junction 8). Great individual and group tuition, a bit of

advance practice will warm you up and make for a smoother ski experience on the real slopes – and there is a great V>vjÉL>ÀÊÜ Ì Ê ÌÊv `Ê> `ÊÃ >V Ã]Ê> `Ê a Snow & Rock shop where you can try ski’s before you buy! Log on to www.thesnowcentre.com to book your lessons.

The NipperGrip is a must for any family going skiing with young children. Developed by Sussex husband and wife, James and Katherine, over years of teaching their three children to ski, the NipperGrip is a ski harness for children up to 8 years old. It is unique in that it has a handle on the front and the back so you can pick your child up whichever way they fall. The NipperGrip makes getting on and off chairlifts easy – no more panics or having to stop the lift while you untangle your child on the floor. The NipperGrip also comes with detachable reins so you can control your child’s direction and speed as they ski along in front of you. Its use is not limited to skiing. Book Bytes in Bloomsbury!

A year after the launch of the Book Club, the Radisson Edwardian Bloomsbury Street Hotel has launched another literary initiative – Book Bytes. A collection of short films, the Book Byte series show actress and author Lucy-Ann

Sophie Bakes a Cake by Tina Burke Puffin Books

This lovely book is all about a young girl, Sophie and her doll Scarlett. They decide to bake a yummy cake. But when Scarlett wants Sophie to add some peanut butter, vegemite and crayons, (much to the bemusement of Sophie’s watching puppy ) the result is nothing short of astounding!… Scarlett thinks it’s delicious! Or does she?

Holmes curled up in the hotel’s stylish egg chair reading extracts from a wide variety of genres including romance and children’s tales. As home to the infamous Bloomsbury -iÌ]Ê>Ê}À Õ«Ê vÊ yÕi Ì > ÊÜÀ ÌiÀÃÊvÀ Ê the early 19th Century, Bloomsbury Street is perhaps the most famous literary street in the capital. The 174-bedroom Radisson Edwardian Bloomsbury Street, launched in January 2009 following a 25 million transformation, has dedicated an entire wall to one of Bloomsbury’s most famous exports; Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway. The striking art installation, made up of pages from the celebrated novel, dominates the hotel’s spacious reception area. For January 2011, Anne of Green Gables will be the running film, but also coming soon are The Little Match Girl and Lucy’s own novel The (im)Perfect Girlfriend. Always keen to stay ahead of the technology curve, the Book Byte initiative incorporates the fast paced world of technology with the traditional world of literature – creating a book project that is perfect for 2011.

Ten Big Toes and a Prince’s Nose by Nancy Gow, illustrated by Stephen Costanza (Sterling)

Poor princess! When suitors saw her feet, they ran for the door before even getting to know her. In another land far away, a kind prince had a similar problem: although he was funny and kind, he had a huge nose that scared off every maiden he met. But a serendipitous meeting on a ski à «iÊÌi>V iÃÊÌ ÃÊ>` À>L ÞÊy>Üi`Ê> `Ê well-matched) pair an important lesson: ‘I am what I am and that’s all right with me.’ With whimsical surprises, lavish art and a fantastical story about love and acceptance, this picture book will delight readers of any age.

Eating out Carluccio’s

The Garrick Restaurant,

Tom’s Kitchen

291-293 Muswell Hill Broadway London N10 1BY 020 8815 1946

Hendon Hall Hotel, Ashley Lane London NW4 1HF 0845 0727448

Somerset House, Strand, London WC2R 1LA 020 7845 4646

We took all four children with us to test the new Carluccio’s in Muswell Hill. Greeted with neat little paper bags of jigsaws, colouring and quizzes, my daughters were all instantly happy, calm and occupied! With plenty of crisp grissini to snack on, we poured over the menu. The special ‘exotic and wild mushroom risotto’, and a traditional roast chicken breast, potatoes and tomato and herb sauce both satisfied nicely. Children chose from the wellbalanced kids menu (£6.25 each) pressed apple juice, pasta (fresh ravioli with spinach and mascarpone) and a generous strawberry ice cream. In recent years my kids have gone crazy for their yummy chocolate sponge teddy bears. But it had never occurred to me to take the whole family for a sit-down lunch… This worked very well for us, we were satisfied, the atmosphere was a buzzy, familyorientated, happy affair, and if the queue hadn’t been so long at the till, I would certainly have stocked up on some of their goodies on our way out.

Fine dining at the Garrick Restaurant presents 3 delicious courses for £25. Modern British cuisine bursting with y>Û ÕÀ]Ê}i iÀ ÕÃÊÛi}iÌ>L iÊÃ `iÊ` Ã iÃ]Ê and very special desserts. We savoured the starters of juicy scallops, and a wonderful guinea fowl terrine. The menu offers something for every pallet, and my fillet of halibut was served with a lemongrass and coconut broth and was quite divine, whilst my partner enjoyed the sumptious and hearty breast of duck! The high ceilings, upholstered dining chairs, attentive staff and spacious lounge made for a very comfortable dining experience in this fine Hendon Hall (home to Shakespearean actor and theatre manager David Garrick in the late 18th century). Perhaps an ideal venue for a special family get together, several private dining rooms available, free parking, 57 bedrooms and space for children to run about in the lawned garden. The RAF museum is in very cloxe proximity and could make for a whole weekend of family fun if relatives are going to be staying at the hotel.

Top Chef Tom Aikens serves up a real feast for the family at his latest restaurant in Somerset House. Classic British food with favourites such as Daylesford 7 hour braised lamb, and the best fish and chips, sit alongside some great pasta dishes and comforting pies! It’s a stunning setting for a family lunch or weekend brunch. The atmosphere here is rustic calm, and the food is bursting with y>Û ÕÀ]ÊÛ LÀ> ÌÊV ÕÀÊ> `ÊV i`ÊÌ Ê absolute perfection. Cosy leather booth, or tables with stunning views across the Southbank. Starters included a perfect pot of deep fried crispy squid that we dipped hungrily into a super coriander/ chilli dip, and a salad of beetroot, warm fig, peppered goats cheese hit all the right taste buds. Grilled plaice with butter, herb and caper sauce and the best V «ÃÊV i`Ê ÊÌÀÕvyiÊ ÊÜ Ì ÊÃ >Û }ÃÊ of parmesan couldn’t have been more indulgent, and my husband’s Spaghetti Vongole was terrific! The dessert menu was positively bursting with delicious British puds. Expensive but worth every pound!

Which is why I have decided to commission a rather exciting piece of art. You see, my morning strolls often take me down Highgate High Street, where I escort the girls to their fancy little school. It was there, just as I passed the Contemporary Art Gallery, that an idea struck me. A dog is for life, not just for Christmas as you and I well know, and a dog as handsome as me really should have his portrait painted. So, in years to come I can be remembered for who I really am… not only as Rhubarb’s pal, but the original thinking dog, or…. the dog with the dashing good looks or THE dog on the block, and simply ‘Dudley Etheridge Taylor, handsome flat

coated retriever, loyal friend and accomplished writer.’ My dear friend Tiddles has already been immortalised in oil on canvas, by local artist Sara Yasmin Khan. I will contact Sara through the gallery on info@ highgateart.com

Dudley does... Art Last year was all about Rhu. You remember Rhu – the slightly tubby, chocolate brown Labrador from down the road? Well Rhubarb certainly ate his way through the Christmas season, and is taking some time to recover and shape up – before coming back to this business of publishing. If I’m honest readers, my time out of the spotlight has made me miss it even more…
