Clubs and Classes A parent’s guide to clubs and classes Clubs and classes are a great way to continue your child's development, as well as allow them to have fun, get exercise and socialise with others. There are lots of different clubs and classes on offer locally - here's some of our favourites!
Drama Drama is always hugely popular with children and really helps younger people release their creative thoughts and let their imagination run wild. Always fun and engaging, it's also a great way to help children develop their own sense of self, confidence and self-esteem.
Sports Sports clubs are brilliant if you've got a child who is energetic and needs to burn some of their energy off! Sport isn't just fantastic for getting fit though - it has been proven to help with overall child development, concentration and for building confidence and teambuilding skills.
Trampolining Trampolining is always popular among children, but it's also a great fun way to get exercise. Under supervision, and learning different moves on the trampoline, it can be the perfect way to get into gymnastics and other athletics too.
Music Music classes will help your child to develop their artistic talents. As well as the joys of music, it's also a great way to learn other related abilities - like patience, discipline, and social and physical skills.
Baby and Toddler Physical Sensory Classes Great for very young children, classes allow you to explore a multi-sensory environment with your child, with organised activities in place for you to enjoy as well as the freedom to explore. Your child can benefit from physical activity, learn to make friends with others, and have plenty of fun while doing so.

Where Learning’s a Ball
Help your child grow confidence One of the most important skills children can master is self-confidence: it will help them build friendships, perform well in school and resist negative peer pressure. But while some youngsters are blessed with a natural ability to run headlong into new activities others need a little help. According to the team at performing arts school Stagecoach Havant, performing arts can give even the shyest wallflower confidence. “It’s not only about training children to perform on stage, it’s about helping them to perform better in life,” said Juli Richards, Principal at the stage school.
On your bike! Pedal2Pedal is a children's cycling club which will be running lessons throughout January and February at Queen Elizabeth Country Park. It's a great opportunity for children to learn new skils, have fun and get outdoors! See our 'What's On' pages for more details, or contact Hannah on hannah@pedal2pedal.co.uk or 07984367888.

How much free childcare am I entitled to? All three and four-year-olds in England receive 570 hours per year of free childcare. This can be in a preschool, nursery or with a registered childminder and is normally taken as 15 hours weekly over 38 weeks, but there’s often flexibility on this.
Preschools – your need to know guide By Liat Hughes-Joshi More parents than ever send their children to preschool or nursery, thanks in part to free places for three and four-year-olds, and for some twoyear-olds. Preschools are about learning through play and their benefits can be significant, although there’s no obligation to sign up if you don’t think it will be right for your child.
How can I choose the right preschool for my child? Speak to other local parents about their experiences and read Ofsted reports for the nurseries/ preschools you’re considering. Really though, there’s no substitute for taking a proper look around, meeting staff and seeing what your own impressions are.
How many hours a week? You don’t have to use up the full entitlement of 570 hours and could send your child for fewer if you think 15 hours a week is too much for them initially. Some parents find it works well to start off with just a couple of mornings weekly and build up to more.
How can I get my child settled in?
So what are the upsides? Beyond the obvious – a few hours of childcare – preschool is a great way to get your little one used to being separated from you or other carers. It could also help them become familiar with an environment that’s more like school and some of the routines and behaviours expected there, such
Staff will be very aware that young children may need help getting used to a new place and people and so should have some sort of settling in procedure. If you’re especially concerned, speak to them and see what their advice is – you may even be able to stay with your child during the first few visits.

Families Solent East talks to Portsmouth High Junior School Headmaster, Paul Marshallsay, about the advantages of a Pre-School setting within a school... "One of the highlights of my day is visiting our Pre-School. Nestled in amongst our classrooms and adjacent to the gardens it is an oasis of fun and industrious activity on a level that only our youngest children can achieve. I like to think of it as T-minus one, the launch pad for the children to rocket themselves through our school. So what are the advantages of a PreSchool setting that is part of a larger school? Notice that I did not use the phrase attached to a school as they are very much part of the whole. That is the first benefit achieved. The children feel part of something substantial and gain the experience of knowing a wider range of adults who all have an influence in their lives. The staff throughout the school enjoy interacting with the Pre-School children and getting to know them. Access to a greater range of facilities and expertise allows the children to develop across a whole range of skillsets. The girls here access opportunities such as specialist taught lessons in French, music, forest school and ballet. The children are able to move around the school to rooms where these subjects are taught, use the gardens, play on the climbing frames and in the dell, and express themselves in a whole host of ways that are not hindered by their physical surroundings. Interactions are an integral part of child development at all levels, but at the youngest ages they form the bedrock of a child’s future. The older children in the school trip over themselves in their eagerness to help in the Pre-School, be it assisting with an assembly or simply going into the playground at break time to play with their much smaller friends. The older pupils are looked up to and set a fantastic example, developing their own confidence at the same time. It is one of the most heart-warming scenes that it is possible to observe." For Sale ! Families Solent East Magazine is for sale! If you would like more information about the opportunity to run your own business as part of a successful partnership, in a flexible role that fits around family life, contact Caroline on caroline@familiessolenteast.co.uk or 07967 597779.
Mums Want More Flexible Working Opportunities According to a survey by Workingmums.co.uk, almost three quarters of working mums identify flexible work as being crucial to getting more women into senior roles. The survey shows that mums feel flexible working is vital for them to manage work and family life and that 60% of those who work flexibly would like even more flexibility. So what can individuals do to help persuade their employers to agree to them working flexibly? Here are some tips: Think through what the job requires and whether the tasks you have to perform can be done at a different location ie from home, or at times outside of the standard working day. Take account of any additional costs or challenges this might involve and discuss them honestly. Give examples of the ways in which your work can be successfully carried out under any new working pattern you are proposing, and show that it will not harm the business. Point out any business advantages. Research some case studies, ideally in your sector that shows how the work pattern you are suggesting can be mutually beneficial to you and your employer. If managers are dubious, suggest a trial period. Have a compromise solution as a back-up. For more information and flexible work opportunities, visit www.workingmums.co.uk

Love of Learning in Fareham January 2018 sees the opening of a new I Love to Learn Centre in Fareham. Families Solent East talks to Centre Director, Howard Jones about their success... "Since opening our first centre in Southsea, we have had parents and children travelling to see us from all over the local area. The furthest ever was Liphook! Many of them have asked if we could open a centre in their area. We have been listening, so help is on its way. Our second centre, based in Fareham, is due to open in January 2018. It is in the Delta Business Park on Salterns Lane, and it is next to the Starfish Nursery and Kids Family Centre. We have had a great reaction from some of our Fareham customers: “I am delighted that “I Love to Learn’ is coming to Fareham. For us, this means access to first class tuition and support for our daughter is even closer to home. The team at I Love to Learn have done an amazing job and made it fun along the way.” Jon Ozanne (parent) We only employ fully qualified teachers in our centres. Each child is given a free educational assessment to find out their strengths and weaknesses. Once we have agreed goals with the parents, we set up individual plans for each child. Our tutors work with the child on those skills each session and continuously monitor progress. Our safe and secure education centre is a great place for children to learn. Children love the stamps and stickers as it makes learning fun again. We love to see students getting switched back on to learning after getting left behind for so long in class." www.cft.org.uk/whats-on/event/ the-little-matchgirl#tickets-19685 Steeped in the metaphor and meaning that runs through the veins of Andersen’s enduring stories, this will be a night to delight, transport and surprise. For adults and brave children alike, expect music, puppetry, dark magic... and perhaps some modern truths that we would all rather remain hidden.
THE LITTLE MATCHGIRL AND OTHER HAPPIER TALES Emma Rice’s ‘exquisite’ (Daily Telegraph) production comes to Chichester following its critically-acclaimed premiere at Shakespeare’s Globe. As our destitute heroine struggles to survive, she strikes her matches to keep warm. Each match will conjure a new story, a new vision, and we will hold her hand as we tumble down the rabbit hole together. Inspired by the beautiful and devastatingly sad Hans Christian Andersen tale, The Little Matchgirl, and combining Andersen’s other tales, The Princess and the Pea, The Emperor’s New Clothes and Thumbelina, The Little Matchgirl and Other Happier Tales reveals a spellbinding world of magic and mystery.
