XXXXXXX Welcome from the

Editor Phew! We’ve made it through what are almost unanimously the worst two months of the year. And what a horrendous couple of months they’ve been! The rain just kept coming and coming; we saw puddles the size of ponds, ponds the size of lakes and enough water to turn the Southsea bandstand into an island. Hopefully as we turn the corner into spring we can look forward to some better weather in time for the many family events coming up this Easter holidays. And if you happen to be feeling particularly springy already and fancy entering Portsmouth in Bloom this year, we have the form on page 9 and information on the new categories. Wishing you all a very happy, chocolate coated Easter from the team at Families magazine.

The world-leading ‘Babylab’ at Birkbeck, University of London, is launching a new Europe-wide study of the early emergence of autism and ADHD. With over £2.5 million in funding, Professor Mark Johnson and his team are now embarking upon the Studying Autism and ADHD Risk in Siblings (STAARS) project, which will map brain development from birth in order to identify the earliest signs of these lifelong social communication and attention disorders. The research will focus on infants who have older siblings with autism or ADHD as these infants are at particularly high risk for these disorders. Although parents may notice symptoms of these conditions from infancy, children are often not diagnosed until they are in nursery or school. Earlier diagnosis of these children would help make it possible to design earlier and more effective interventions that may prevent symptoms from developing, and improve the quality of life for individuals with autism/ADHD and their families. Can you and your baby help? Expenses are paid and mothers we met said they spent a very special day with their child, which they really enjoyed. School & Nursery News Brookham School Celebrates Chinese New Year Brookham Year 1 Children had lots of fun celebrating Chinese New Year. They enjoyed learning all about how families in China get together and celebrate this great occasion with presents, decorations, food, new clothes and even haircuts! The children listened avidly to stories of the many traditional customs. They also learnt about how every year is related to an animal sign, and stories were told to explain how each year was given its name. The children in our class are born in the years of the Pig or the Rat. With great amusement they discovered that people born in the Year of the Pig like eating and sleeping, but they are also honest with a calm appearance and strong heart. Whilst children born in the Year of the Rat are rather timid, they are also clever, adorable, sensible and curious. 2014 welcomed the Year of the Horse which the children celebrated by creating their own dance wearing a horse mask they had painted. As a grand finale all the children took part in performing a traditional Dragon Dance.

The days of being told you child’s level may be over! Love them or hate them, National Curriculum Levels may be coming to an end! Have you just got your head around this strange new language of 2c, 3a, 4b etc. or are you already fluent? Levels were introduced to set a national standard that all could be measured against. From September 2015 the new National Curriculum for England comes into force. Most schools are already wrestling with the changes it is bringing. As part of this huge reform the old system of ‘levels’ will be removed and not replaced. So, how teachers judge and communicate children’s attainment, especially in English and mathematics, may completely change! Teachers should know how well their pupils are doing through their ongoing assessment. Now schools will be expected to keep their own records. The ongoing assessment and choice of how to tell parents will be up to the school to decide. What will replace them? Well at the moment, no one knows. The answer will vary from school to school and will be a discussion many are having at the moment. However, it is not the end of testing. End of key stage assessments, including National Curriculum tests, will still be statutory. This is to benchmark school’s performance however and not so much to give information to parents about their individual children. ‘SATs’ will still be sat at the end of KS1 (years 1 and 2), KS2 years 3,4,5 and 6) and optional test are available to help schools benchmark through KS3 (years 7,8 and 9). KS4 is year 10 and 11 and we all know what they are preparing for! By Linda Jones - Kip McGrath Education centres Portsmouth

Education News

SATs. What you need to know By Howard Jones - McGrath Education Centres

SATs are a series of National Curriculum assessments used to assess children attending schools in England. They involve a mixture of teacher-led and test-based assessment depending on the age of the pupils.

Prep School Boarding & Day 8-13 Years | Pre-Prep & Nursery 3–7 Years

When and How? Age 7: SATS in English and maths, marked in school by teachers.

Age 11: SATs in English and maths, marked externally,

results published nationally. Teacher assessment in science. The Key Stage 1 SATs are all teacher assessed. There shouldn’t be any real pressure on children to perform. Most schools try to make it all as relaxing and low key as possible. The tests are in reading, writing (including handwriting and spelling) and maths. The best thing is to just stick to routine and make sure they get plenty of rest. No need to even mention it.

“Outstanding Early Years Provision” ISI Report 2011

They then get a ‘level’ in reading, writing, spelling, maths and science. This should be around level 2 for all subjects. If it is way more or less the child should get extra support. The Key Stage 2 tests are a bit more formal: done on a set day and marked externally. There are papers in English (spelling, comprehension and writing, including handwriting) and maths (including mental arithmetic). Most eleven-year-olds would be expected to get level 4s across the board. Obviously the children will be aware that there is something going on and they are going to be tested. They will probably get plenty of exam practice and specific work on the finer details of types of language they will need to use. Some schools will put on more pressure on revision than others. It may be a motivator for some kids to try and bit harder, however some find it stressful.

if there are areas for improvement.

• Keep to routine by making sure they are well rested and get plenty of exercise. Avoid late nights or sleepovers during this time.

• Talk to them about why tests are important but also not to worry. Keep up the communication so that they can tell you how they feel.

• Talk about stories, books and characters.

Read them stories and hear them read. Play story CDs in the car. It helps children to hear stories before they write them. I am afraid TV it too chopped up and fast moving to hold any narrative, so minimise this.

• Practice and re-enforce basic maths skills such as

timed tables. It’s an essential skill that will improve accuracy but also fluency (getting it right but also completing more questions).

• In the end it is better that issues are flagged up

now if they need extra support. SATs should be information for you and the school about your child’s progress rather than their performance.

The Science

Moira Lizzie Photography www.moiralizzie.co.uk

of play By Dr David Whitebread

Senior Lecturer in the Psychology of Education, Cambridge University

As parents, we’re often reminded that raising a child isn’t an exact science, and support and guidance on the topic can be confusing and contradictory. One of the topics often hotly debated is how parents play with their children. Dr David Whitebread from Cambridge University shares his views on some of the myths and misconceptions around the types of play children engage in today. Myth 1: Children should always be busy and engaged with some type of activity Early education in nurseries and primary school has become much more structured and formalised - thirty years ago it was all about play. The tiger parent society we live in often means parents feel a pressure to constantly keep their children occupied but it’s important that time is found in the week to give children free reign to play and choose the play they’re interested in. You can’t hothouse children and force them into certain interests/skills and in fact, trying to do so could be counter-productive.

Myth 2: You’re a terrible parent if you put your child at risk through play The current generation of parents are so concerned about letting their children out unguarded, that this can restrict children as they don’t learn to be independent. Children learn through risk and those that are deprived of nature and the opportunity for ‘risky play’, like climbing in trees or building dens, miss opportunities to learn to assess what’s risky and, if necessary, deal with the consequences. UK culture is currently quite risk-averse, and so children are heavily supervised and play indoors, in their gardens and in specially designed play spaces with safety surfaces. In the more rural and thinly populated Scandinavian countries, however, children are much more encouraged to play outdoors and in natural surroundings, and are far less closely supervised. A report written for the UK National Trust cites evidence that the area where children are allowed to range unsupervised around their homes has shrunk by 90% since the 1970’s.

8 | March/April 2014 | Families Solent East

There’s a balance to be struck in giving your kids the chance to try these things and, of course, keeping them as safe as you can too. Perhaps give an older sibling the role of parent, allowing younger children to have this freedom with the supervision of a more mature child.

Myth 3: Children should play with kids of their own age Socialising in mixed age groups is an important part of child development, and something that parents can influence. Few of us feel a part of a community today, and with smaller nuclear families and other relatives living further apart, your child might have less access to children of different ages. And if your child goes to a professional childcare setting, they may be restricted in the age groups they can mix with too. In mixed age group play, younger children naturally learn skills from the older kids as a form of mimicry, as well as having the opportunity to face the challenge of interacting with an older audience. Older children also benefit too by learning important skills around taking responsibility for younger children. It’s important to give children the opportunity to reach out to each other and find their own ways of communicating.

Myth 4: Children always need adults around them to play Scientists have examined how children play in hunter gatherer societies that remain in the world today, and they play all the time, imitating adults, without adult support. They’ve found a lot of positive things from this in terms of how that child is able to prepare for the adult world. If you don’t allow them to have sufficient autonomy to develop the skills of independence and resilience, you are not arming them with the tools they need for the future.

The key, as with all things, is balance and moderation. Too much screen time obviously prevents your child from doing the range of other activities that is beneficial to them, so keep these tech tools in your armoury, but keep time restricted on use. Excessive, solitary screen-based play in early childhood is recognised to be problematic if it limits the development of children’s other play skills, and links have been established in this case with difficulties in social development, obesity and so on. The experts also point out clear evidence of a range of benefits arising from screenbased play. For example, there are studies that indicate the physical benefits of video games, such as quickened reaction time. They are also often very active, mentally stimulating and cooperative, with many children playing games with friends and with parents. Indeed, there is some evidence that well-designed videogames can enrich play resources for children and their families.

Tips for Parents

Play with your children, doing something that gives you genuine enjoyment. That enjoyment is infectious and creates the right, emotionally warm environment for play and development. Make sure the time you spend with your kids is quality time for you both.

Try and be open to giving your children the widest range of experiences. Consider settings which don’t have set or prescribed tasks and discover: a wood, the beach, for example. Make-up your fun from the resources in nature.

Myth 5: Technology – iPads, TVs and computers – are lazy parenting

Give children as much autonomy as you can. Allow them to take risks. Let them get dirty! They need to work out the rules of the world and boundaries, without you taking over.

Technology is part of our modern world so it certainly shouldn’t be a no-go for parents today. Using technology in early education can be very useful as it can present intellectual challenges not available in the real world that in some cases, can be more engaging for children.

Dr Whitebread is supporting National Science and Engineering Week, 14th to 23rd March. which aims to raise awareness of the important role science has in many aspects of our lives. To find out about events in the area visit www.britishscienceassociation.org/NSEWevents

Portsmouth is

blooming marvellous!

Spring is certainly in the air! Despite the torrential downpours we have experienced lately, there’s still plenty we can be doing to brighten up our gardens and windowsills. Gardening is a lovely family activity, and very rewarding. From watching a small sweet pea seed start to sprout and grow in a pot, to merrily watering a grow bag with a rampant courgette plant in, anyone can get involved, whether they have a garden or not! A small patio can house containers of plants, and even a windowsill can make a good home for a tray of lettuces. Good fun, cheap and very satisfying! To get you inspired, this year our local cooperative, Southsea Greenhouse, is running Portsmouth in Bloom, in association with Portsmouth City Council and Aspex Gallery Green Space and generously sponsored by Colas and Portsmouth Water. They are aiming to broaden the reach of this popular annual competition and encourage more families and schools to enter. And it’s free to enter! The competition is open to all Portsmouth residents within the PO1 to PO6 postcodes. You can enter up to two categories out of a possible fifteen. You could jazz up the front of your house

with some hanging baskets or brighten up your balcony with some interesting containers. Remember, you don’t even need to plant things in regular plant pots – have you thought of popping a couple of plants in a pair of out-grown children’s wellies? Southsea Greenhouse have introduced a couple of new categories this year: ‘Eat my street’ and ‘Eat my school’. You could get together with other people on your street to grow a variety of edible plants in an innovative way, encourage wildlife and sustainability as well as fostering an ongoing community spirit. And if your children are of school age, there are four categories that the school could enter. The school may already be involved in a planting and/ or environmental project, so why not encourage them to enter? There are categories for ‘a school decorated with flowers’, ‘a school environmental project’, ‘a school garden cultivated by children’ and ‘eat my school’.

Moira Lizzie Photography www.moiralizzie.co.uk

Greenhouse, and other partners, are holding a number of workshops to help give you inspiration and encouragement. Bumper guide to We know that a regular teeth-cleaning routine is essential for good dental health. From teething to the teenage years, here's advice on taking care of your children’s teeth.

Babies and teething Start to brush your baby's gums with a soft toothbrush at bath time, or even let your baby have a go themselves as long as you supervise them. This establishes brushing their teeth as part of the washing routine. When your baby is teething it can be a difficult time for baby and parents alike. The first teeth usually appear at around six months, but they can begin to come through as early as three months or as late as one year.

6 months - first incisors (front teeth) 7 months - second incisors 12 months - first molars 18 months - canines (eye teeth) 2-3 years - second molars As the teeth grow, they push through the gums, which can be quite painful for your baby. This is especially true for the first teeth because it's a new experience for your baby, and when the molars or back teeth - start to push through because they're bigger.

Dental Care

Teething is usually easy to spot. Your child may become more bad-tempered than usual and may have trouble sleeping. You'll probably notice that he or she is chewing on their toys or fingers and is more dribbly than usual. If your baby seems uncomfortable or in pain, there are ways you can help. Teething rings, especially if they've been cooled in the fridge, and cool drinks of milk or water can help to soothe sore gums. If these don't work, you may wish to try a local anaesthetic gel, although this should be used sparingly and you must follow the instructions carefully.

Bottle feeding Many babies will feed from a bottle at some stage, either from birth or in conjunction with breast feeding. What you put in your baby's bottle can have a major impact on the future of their teeth. The British Dental Association advise that wherever possible put only water or milk in your baby's bottle. Don't add sugar to drinks and don’t be tempted to put fruit juices in a bottle. The acid can attack your baby's teeth. Even very weak fruit squash can damage your baby's teeth. Stick with water or milk to keep the risk of decay to a minimum.

Dummies & thumb-sucking Many parents use a dummy as a way of comforting their baby, especially when trying to get him or her off to sleep. Limited use of dummies is fine, but if your child sucks on a dummy for long periods, it could cause problems in the way the teeth develop. The same is true if your baby sucks his or her thumb. The pressure of the thumb or dummy against the back of the teeth could push them forward, which may mean your child will need corrective treatment - like a brace or having teeth removed - later on. Try to wean your child off sucking its thumb or a dummy, treating it as part of the growing up process. Never be tempted to dip your child's dummy in anything, especially something like sugar or fruit juice. Prolonged contact with the teeth could cause real damage.

10 | March/April 2014 | Families Solent East

Brushing properly Brush your child's teeth for at least two minutes twice a day, once just before bedtime and at least one other time during the day. Encourage them to spit out excess toothpaste and make sure your child doesn’t eat or lick the toothpaste from the tube. Guide your child's hand so they can feel the correct movement and use a mirror to help your child see exactly where the brush is cleaning their teeth.

When brushing teeth, always start and finish at the same point. That way you know when you've done the job properly. With a pea sized blob of toothpaste on the brush, start with the top set back teeth and make small circular motions with the brush, moving gradually around to the other side of the mouth. When you get to the last tooth, bring the brush round and do the same with the inside of the teeth. This is often the part that people forget, but it's also likely to be where bacteria and tartar will occur. Then do exactly the same with the bottom set. Make tooth brushing as fun as possible, using an egg timer to time it for at least two minutes or by playing a favourite nursery song that is at least 2 minutes long while they brush. Don't let children run around with a toothbrush in their mouth as they may damage their mouths or choke if they fall over. Supervise tooth brushing until your child is seven or eight years old, either by brushing their teeth yourself or, if they brush their own teeth, by watching how they do it. From the age of seven or eight they should be able to brush their own teeth, but it’s still a good idea to watch them now and again to make sure they brush properly and for the whole two minutes. If your child battles against having their teeth brushed or doing it themselves, try to use positive encouragement and reward rather than nagging or telling them off, which will only further impact any negative feelings they have about tooth brushing. You could try disclosing tablets so that they can see how well they are cleaning their teeth, and they may find it fun. Never use food or sweets as a reward.

Dental Health Finding a dentist Once you've established a good toothbrushing routine at home, the next step is the first trip to the dentist. Take your child to the dentist when they're as young as possible and at least once by the time they're two. This is so they become familiar with the environment and get to know the dentist. The dentist can help to prevent decay and identify any health problems at an early stage. Just opening up the child's mouth for the dentist to take a look is useful practice. When you visit the dentist be positive about it and make the trip fun. This will stop your child worrying about future visits. Take your child with you when you go for your own dental check-up appointments so they get used to it. NHS dental care for children is free. To find an NHS dentist near you, visit www.nhs.uk/Service-Search/Dentists/ LocationSearch/3 or call 111. If the dental practice you first contact is full or doesn't provide NHS care, this doesn’t mean that NHS dental care is not available locally. Contact NHS England, on 0300 311 22 33 or via www. england.nhs.uk - they will be able to tell you which dentist in your area currently accepts patients. There may be a high demand for NHS dentists in some areas, and you may have to join a waiting list.

Crooked teeth and ulcers Having crooked teeth or large gaps between teeth can cause problems. Food and bacteria could get stuck between the teeth, which could cause decay. Similarly, if teeth stick out, this could cause problems, either with mouth ulcers and decay, or with speech. Your dentist might suggest that your child has their teeth straightened through orthodontics by wearing a brace.

Healthy diet can help prevent mouth ulcers, as well as keeping in good health generally. If you have an ulcer, avoid citrus fruits and tomatoes as the acid may aggravate it. Chocolate, strawberries, cheese, wheat flour, peanuts and almonds are other common trigger food.

Diet: what is an acid attack? Eating or drinking anything sugary gives the bacteria on and around your teeth the chance to convert the sugar to acid - something that can continue up to one hour after eating. This acid will start to dissolve the surface of your teeth and can eventually lead to decay and possibly a cavity that needs to be filled. All sources of sugars including packet sugar, fruit sugars, honey and any food containing sugar can be turned into acid. Similarly, acidic food or drink can directly damage your teeth. The good news is that teeth can cope with acid attacks as long as they have time to recover and repair themselves between episodes of eating and drinking. To help your teeth try to stick to eating no more than 5 times a day - three meals and two snacks and limit things with sugar to these occasions. If your child likes frequent drinks, give them milk or water at other times. Don’t let them hold sugary drinks in their mouth

or swish them around their teeth. Keeping your teeth clean will also reduce the amount of acid that gets made but it is best to clean before eating and avoid cleaning them just after eating when your saliva is working hard to combat the ‘acid attack’. Finally remember your teeth are especially vulnerable to acid attack at bedtime as saliva flow - which repairs tooth damage - slows down. Once your child has brushed their teeth before bed it is important they avoid any more food or drink apart from water.

NHS advice on Fluoride The NHS advise to start brushing your baby’s teeth with fluoride toothpaste as soon as the first milk tooth breaks through (usually at around six months, but it can be earlier or later). Using a fluoride toothpaste can help prevent and control tooth decay.

Children under the age of three can use a smear of family toothpaste containing at least 1,000ppm (parts per million) fluoride. Toothpaste with less fluoride is not as effective at preventing decay. Children between the ages of three and six should use a pea-sized blob of toothpaste containing 1,350-1,500ppm fluoride. Check the toothpaste packet for this information or ask your dentist.

This article was compiled with information from the NHS, the British Dental Association and Gowers Dental Surgery Ltd, Southsea. Edited by Mandy Earle and Carmel McHenry of the BDA.

The majority of orthodontics is carried out on teenagers. Your dentist will probably refer you to a specialist - an orthodontist - who will examine and probably x-ray the teeth to see how best to straighten them. Mouth ulcers can be uncomfortable. They look similar to small blisters and can be caused by a tooth rubbing against the tongue or cheek, a lack of vitamin B12, anaemia or even stress. Most mouth ulcers don't require specific treatment. They usually heal naturally within 7 days. If they last for more than two weeks, you should go and see your dentist or GP for advice.
