Beat flu this winter

The Flu virus has the ability to stop any us in our tracks, no matter our age or health but for those over the age of 65, or who have serious medical conditions or are pregnant, flu can become more serious. A flu vaccination at your local East of England Co-op Pharmacy could help you beat flu this winter.

Flu is a highly infectious virus, passed on easily through coughs and sneezes. Unlike a cold, the symptoms of flu come on quickly, with the feeling of fatigue often lasting for up to two to three weeks. Symptoms to look out for include a high temperature, coughing, sneezing, headaches, tiredness and aching muscles. A flu vaccination won’t stop 100% of all viruses and the level of protection may vary between each of us, but if you do get flu after vaccination it is likely to be milder and the symptoms shorter-lived.

If you’re between 18 and 64 and fall into one of the following categories you’re likely to be eligible for a free flu vaccination: • Pregnant

Although you may not fall into one of the ‘at risk’ groups outlined by the NHS, if you catch flu you could spread it to those that are. If you’re aged between 18 and 64, simply pop into your

• Have certain illnesses such as; diabetes, asthma, liver disease, heart disease, kidney disease, problems with your spleen, immunosuppression, COPD or neurological diseases • A carer for a family member or friend Anyone aged 65 or over are also eligible for a free flu vaccination.

How to avoid looking “Mumsy” 3.

By Thomasin Newton, Style Consultant

Look for timeless prints and patterns e.g leopard print or stripes. They are always on trend, always look good and always add a little interest to your outfit

aren’t afraid to experiment, but also that you are not a slave to fashion and know what suits you. An example of this, this season. would be a blanket wrap...

The dictionary definition of “Mumsy” is “giving 4. ALWAYS accessorize. Just an impression of dull domesticity; dowdy or putting on a brightly coloured scarf against a simple dark unfashionable or having an old-fashioned coloured outfit can make you look appearance, like that of a traditional mother”. 100 times better. Wearing neutral Most of us aspire to look chic and effortless in our appearance but as our lifestyles change from being perky 20-somethings with no cares or responsibilities to women with kids, careers, houses and partners in our 30’s, 40’s and beyond; sometimes the wheels fall off the way we look and we start to lose our way a little with how to dress to best effect, bearing in mind the demands of children, work and limited leisure time to shop and sort out our oufits. As a result I have compiled an easy list of 7 top tips to keep you looking chic and effortless whatever the day brings.

7 Top Tips TO DO 1.

Express your personal style e.g. wearing chunky jewellery and bangles, wearing a scarf, always rocking heels, wearing bright colours, sporting your jeans rolled up a certain way etc. In other words develop your signature look.

2.

Ensure everything you put on fits well, and makes you feel good about yourself, even if all you are doing is spending the day pottering around doing chores or in the garden. How you look and how you feel internally are entirely intertwined.

Dad in Business Name: Neil Lewis Name, location and nature of your business: Jump Street, 21 Mason Road, Cowdray Park, Colchester CO1 1BX – Indoor trampoline park with over 100 trampolines, dodgeball courts, basketball hoops, foam bag, free jump area, exercise classes. How long has your business been running and the reason why you started your own business? We opened in June 2015, this is the latest venture I am involved in but I have run my own business in one form or another for many years. Trampoline parks was an idea that my partner had experience of in Australia and we could see how successful something like this would be in UK. What do you enjoy about running your own business? The creativity that is possible when not having to answer to a large board of directors or investors enabling quick turnaround of ideas and implementation. Is there anything you don’t enjoy about running your own business? Not really, sometimes the pressure to make the right decisions, getting people on board with you who can share the

staples with a burst of colour from accessories is the easiest and most effective way to dress.

5.

Dress to your strengths. If you’ve got great legs or a great bust show it/them off and don’t draw attention to a lesser feature.

6.

Wear and buy classic items as the staples in your wardrobe e.g. ballet flats, breton tops, straight leg dark wash jeans, leather jacket, trench coat

7.

Add currentness to your look by buying inexpensive items that are on trend for a season. Pairing them with your classic staples with show you know what is going on in the fashion world and

inexpensive but when worn with jeans and boots and maybe a floppy felt hat (if you dare) really brings your look up to date. Wear loose or belted whatever you prefer. Most high street retailers are selling these wraps at the moment.. especially good at Walllis and M&S. Another good example would be a berry coloured fringed suede bag. Inexpensive and instantly lifts any outfit. www.thomasinnewtonimage consultant.com

vision can be frustrating, it takes quite a lot to keep all the plates spinning, but that’s the challenge that keeps me interested. What was the best piece of advice you were ever given? With the right attitude anything is possible What does the future hold for your business? We are going from strength to strength, Colchester has exceeded all expectations in Q1 and we are constantly exploring ways we can improve the product and service. We are looking at other sites around the country to expand the brand. How do you fit your business around family life? They make the journey with me, my family has always enjoyed my eclectic lifestyle and the successes we have had have been shared by all the family. My Daughter is currently helping me out at Colchester actually! What advice would you give to any parents considering starting up their own business? Understand clearly what your objectives are from the outset. Make sure the numbers work Be prepared to work the hardest you have ever done. Keep grounded and employ experts in areas you don’t have the expertise. Trust your own judgement.

Family Planning: It’s not all about blankets, bottles, and bibs! We all want to make sure our children are properly looked after and cared for should anything happen to us. That’s why making a will is so important if you have dependents. A will is not just for the rich with multiple houses and trust funds to distribute, it’s about making sure your wishes for your children are properly looked after should anything happen to you.

A will is a legal document that comes into effect if you die. It contains your instructions about who looks after your children and how your money, property and possessions are distributed in the event of your death.

Being able to choose your executors / trustees Your executor / trustee is responsible for carrying out your financial wishes when you die. If you have children, they will look after and invest the money until your children are 18 or over. Choosing who will look after your children Would you leave your children with no one to care for them for a day, a month or for ever? No. A will allows you to appoint your children’s guardians should both parents die before they are 18. For unmarried couples, if the father’s name is not on the birth certificate, he might not get guardianship unless he is specifically appointed in a will. Failing to appoint guardians means social services and not family members will make all the choices about your children. A will is the only way to protect your children’s future. Your husband / wife will NOT inherit everything automatically Depending on your family structure and wealth, husbands and wives do not automatically inherit everything. Are you living with a partner and not married? Your partner is not automatically entitled to anything from your estate. Without a will, they have to go to court and fight for their share, a process that might involve taking your children into court. So don’t put off making a will.

Ipswich businesses continue to demonstrate their support for the next generation of sportsmen and women from the county as the Ipswich Sporting Lunch Club goes from strength to strength. A capacity audience of 240 people recently descended on Wherstead Park near Ipswich for the inaugural Ipswich Sporting Lunch Club event keen to raise money for SportsAid, the national charity for the rising stars of British sport. Led by event sponsors, Pound Gates Chartered Insurance Brokers, Crafted, Ensors Chartered Accountants, Handelsbanken, Ellisons Solicitors, Corbel and the Suffolk Institute of Directors, the club has been established to raise vital funding to help young sportsmen and women from the county overcome the financial challenges they face as they bid to become Britain’s next generation of Olympians and Paralympians. SportsAid research shows that on average young athletes will train 15 hours a week after school, travel more than 600 miles a month to train and compete and they will spend £6,000 a year on their sport, relying almost entirely on their families for support. Former England cricketer and current sporting speaker of the year Geoff Miller was guest of honour at the lunch. Miller spent 20 years on the professional cricket circuit, representing Derbyshire, Essex, Natal and England. He was also appointed National Selector by the England and Wales Cricket Board in 2008. Also in attendance at the lunch

were Tim Lawler, Chief Executive of SportsAid, London 2012 Olympian and SportsAid alumna Louise Jukes and recent SportsAid award recipient Rebecca Sherwin, from Felixstowe. Sherwin represented Team GB at the inaugural European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan earlier this year winning bronze in the 4 x 100 metres medley relay final and qualifying for the final of the 200 metres women’s backstroke. The roll call of SportsAid alumni reads like a who’s who of British sport and includes Sir Chris Hoy, Sir Bradley Wiggins, David Weir CBE, Mo Farah CBE, Jessica Ennis-Hill CBE and Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE. Suffolk athletes to receive support include both Suffolk’s London 2012 medalists – Anthony Ogogo and Zoe Newson, and Double Commonwealth Gold Medalist Chris Walker-Hebborn. The Ipswich Sporting Lunch Club will raises money by hosting two business lunches each year. Each lunch will be open to any local business and will provide good sporting speakers, a great atmosphere and a wonderful networking opportunity. The next lunch event will take place on Friday 26th February 2016 at Wherstead Park when one of the UK’s best known and most popular sportswomen, Sharron Davies MBE, will be guest of honour. Keeping active and healthy during the festive period Christmas and the holidays are certainly a time to celebrate…....... and we certainly you have trouble sticking with make the most of it! Ifyour usual routine this time of We eat, we drink, we overindulge, we stop exercising and then we wonder why we feel so unhealthy in the new year! But this year, you do have a choice.

Just keep moving It’s tempting to ditch your workouts as your days fill up with christmas preparations, parties and errands, but now more than ever, you need to stay active. Exercise will help you deal with added stress and give you energy for everything you need to accomplish. It will also help you manage your weight through the maze of parties Xmas families Suff Ad_Layout 1 and gatherings you’ll be attending.

year, come up with a new one. Forget the rules and do whatever you need to do to keep moving: Shorten your workouts if you have to but don’t stop. Do what you have time for even if it’s only 5 or 10 minutes. Choose activities that are easy to do at a moment’s notice: walking, running or cycling or speak with your instructors at the gym and ask them to write you a special 15-minute christmas workout. Exercise wherever and whenever you can. Take the stairs, walk the kids to school, cut your own christmas tree, and go for plenty of long family walks 16/10/2015 16:49 Page 1 during the holidays.

Control Your Eating Eating yourself into a coma seems inevitable during the holidays, what with all the yummy delights available. Treating every party as if it’s an invitation to indulge, however, is a sure way to add pounds. Below are a few reminders for keeping the calories in check: Eat Before You Go. Rules to live by: never go grocery shopping while hungry, and similarly, never hit a holiday party on an empty stomach. You’ll be less tempted to overindulge if your full of something healthy. Choose one treat only. Once at the party, choose one thing to indulge in and make it good. Pick something you only get during the festive period. Control Your Drinking. Alcohol

is an easy way to consume more calories than you need, so avoid mixed or fruity drinks, and have a glass of water for every drink you consume. Also, definitely avoid the egg nog; it has up to 350 calories a cup. Don’t Skip Meals. It’s tempting to skip meals to make up for whatever nightmare food you’ll eat later, but just like the empty-stomach rule, if you’re starving, your rational mind will be unavailable for healthy food choices. Eat small meals all day to avoid going nuts at the buffet table. However you deal with the holidays, make this the year that you don’t gain extra weight. Make a decision to do everything you can to stay active and eat healthy while not depriving yourself of all the fun. Like everything else in life, it’s all about moderation.

Family Festive Tips

Planning a Stress Free Family Get Together This Christmas many of us will be planning to spend time with our families. 2. Dressing Up

This could be as simple as investing in Santa hats or reindeer antlers ( most retailers offer these at very little cost on the lead in to Christmas) or you could have some ‘photo booth’ fun see page 15.

3. Balloons This could mean over excited children of many ages all in the same house all trying out new toys or games and grandparents who enjoy an afternoon nap, through this family ‘fun’ somebody is inevitably trying to prepare something for everyone to eat – sound familiar?

Fairtrade and Traceable back to the cotton field.....

Hosting a family Christmas should be about keeping the stress to a minimum and enjoying watching your children have the fun that they deserve at such a special time of year. So how do you create a fabulous, memorable family celebration whilst making sure every member of your family has a good time. Party planner Maria Alvianos offers us some tips on having stress free family fun this Christmas. ‘The key is organisation, and with a little forward planning and using our very easy non expensive tip guide hopefully you will all get to enjoy a great family Christmas get together.

1. Music

Creates atmosphere, family members of all ages will recognise classic Christmas tunes, any older members of the family could sing along and any over excited younger members of the family could dance away some energy before lunch - not to mention a party isn’t a party without music!

SPECIAL OFFERS 4 X 500G STEAK MINCE JUST £9.99 6 X CHICKEN BREASTS JUST £9.99  OUR CHRISTMAS ORDER BOOK IS NOW OPEN 

November - December 2015

Younger children love balloons – a few balloons to play with (obviously away from the kitchen) can keep the younger members of the family amused for a while.

4. Party Games

A couple of carefully chosen games can add to your family fun. At this time of year the family classics of charades, Pictionary, and cards are games that can be tailored to include all family members. For the younger ones a quick game of musical bumps or statues can burn off any excess energy before suggesting a game for all the family.

6. Magic

A little bit goes a long way! Create mystery with fun magic tricks that will leave the children in awe. If you have a family member willing to try a little magic then there are many reasonably priced magic kits you can find. This is guaranteed to entertain as it will be almost funnier if it all goes wrong !!!!

7. Extra Equipment

When there is a table full of treats nearby having a few extra fun items up your sleeve ( or in a box) already set aside and ready if you need them is always a good idea = jigsaws, colouring, or weather permitting bubbles, skipping ropes ,bouncy balls or hula hoops can keep everyone involved and amused for a while. These are all simple ideas, nothing too complicated and nothing too long and drawn out to keep little ones busy and the older generation awake . We hope you all enjoy a fabulous family Christmas and create memories to cherish forever.

Family Festive Tips

Tips on photographing your Christmas! By Erin Freeman

The holiday season is fast approaching so I would like to share with you my top 3 tips for capturing fleeting moments during the holiday season, and to be honest this can be applied to parties too, so keep this article to hand for future events.

Now for some fun! Photobooths are all the rage, you can create your own photobooth, it doesn’t have to be elaborate or cost the earth to do. You can use your props in front of the Christmas tree, or you could even make your own backdrop by grabbing an empty frame (no glass etc) and standing in front of a blank wall.

Tip 1: Details Capture the details – the presents under the tree, special ornaments, food, the list goes on. After weeks of planning you want to remember how beautiful everything looked.

Tip 2: Keep it relaxed For me candid, relaxed images are more precious than getting the ‘perfect’ picture. It’s important to remember the fun. So don’t force people to get their picture taken, instead stand back for a minute and take a picture of everyone talking or laughing around the table, and then ask everyone to look at you, they will be a bit more relaxed.

Tip 3: The opening of presents Have your camera ready to go, take a photo of them looking at the wrapped pressie, wondering what might be inside, take one photo of them ripping the paper, and finally the big reveal, the excitement on their face!

The DIY approach Small budget? No budget? No problem! Make the props yourself or have the kids make them, most people have scrap paper, scissors, glue and colouring pencils/crayons/felts around the house. The only item you would need to buy is wooden skewers to glue your props to. You can always buy a bit of coloured paper to make santa hats, elf hats etc. If you have a bit of a budget you can buy some glitter, chenille stems (pipe cleaners) and pom poms to embellish your props. Think outside the box and have fun with it. The kids will love making their own props and will be more likely to use them on the day! Don’t have time or a crafty bone in your body? Well the internet has you covered simply type “Christmas Photobooth Props” into your favourite search engine, you will see an amazing array of props that don’t cost the earth. I also like going to stores to see what kind of festive hats they might have, you can get some really fun ones.

Dont Forget...

Now that you have captured all these fun memories my BONUS tip... make an album!!!! There is no point keeping the photos on your phone or computer, albums are always nice to look at next year. Create another family tradition. For more information about Erin Freeman visit: www.erinfreemanphotography.co.uk

Public Health

Smoke Free Cars: Protecting our children from second hand fumes On 1st October it became illegal to smoke in a car (or other vehicle) with anyone under 18 present. The law has changed to protect children and young people from the dangers of second hand smoke.

Children and second hand smoke: the facts Second hand smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals, many of which are irritants and toxins, including:

• Arsenic, which can be found in rat poison. • Benzene, which is found in petrol fumes and can cause leukaemia. • And cyanide, which is poisonous and an industrial pollutant. The smoke also contains other chemicals, many of which are irritants or toxins and more than 50 are known carcinogens. They’re the ones that can cause cancer. Second hand smoke can be especially harmful to children because they have smaller lungs, faster breathing and less developed immune systems. More than 80% of second hand smoke is invisible and odourless and breathing in the fumes puts children at risk of serious conditions including meningitis, cancer, bronchitis and pneumonia and can also make asthma worse.

Even with the windows down or air conditioning on, smoking in a car exposes passengers to toxic chemicals. Second hand smoke in cars can be up to 11 times the levels you would find in a smoky room. The problem isn’t just smoking around children – second-hand smoke hangs around for up to five hours and gets left on furniture, carpets and clothing. This means babies and children are still exposed to it after adults have finished their cigarettes and this isn’t only a problem within your car – but when smoking in your home environment too.

The Law

From 1st October 2015, private vehicles must be smoke free if they are enclosed, there is more than one person present and one of them is under 18. The legislation covers any private vehicle that is enclosed wholly or partly by a roof.

It will be an offence: • For a person of any age to smoke in a private vehicle that is carrying someone who is under 18 • For a driver (including a provisional driver) not to stop someone smoking in these circumstances. The fixed penalty notice fine for both offences is £50 and both the driver and the smoker could be fined. The law applies to every driver in England and Wales, including those aged 17 and those with a provisional driving licence. Enforcement officers (usually the police) will use their discretion to decide whether to issue a warning or a fixed penalty notice, or whether to refer an offence to court.

Support to quit smoking in Suffolk If you are a smoker looking to quit, now really is the perfect time. You are four times more likely to quit smoking successfully if you visit your local stop smoking service. The Stop Smoking Services available in the county offer a mixture of behavioural support and stop smoking aids and medications provided in a one-to-one or group setting for anyone planning to stop smoking. You can contact Live Well Suffolk on 01473 229292 or East Coast Community Healthcare on 0800 3523477 if you live in Waveney. For more information about the new legislation around smoke free cars search ‘Smoke Free’ online or visit www.nhs.uk/ smokefree Information about all of the healthy lifestyles services available in Suffolk can be found on the Healthy Suffolk website; www.healthysuffolk.org.uk

Be Inspired

Inspirational Business Success Story My name is Anne Denny, and I am the Group Manager of Bows and Arrows. We are a not for profit charity which owns 5 Children’s Nurseries across Ipswich: Buttons and Bows, The Children’s Triangle, Little Learners, Wellington and Wigwams. We specialise in local childcare for 0 - 5 year olds, and have recently been awarded Educational Setting of the Year in the Raising The Bar awards and 3 out of 5 of our Settings our rated OUTSTANDING in all areas by Ofsted. I am married and am the Mum to three amazing children Soren (13), Jonas (8) and Ingrid (6). Bows and Arrows has been in existence for 10 years now, and during that time we have seen lots of changes. I first joined the group as Manager of Wigwams Nursery, which was a new purpose built setting that we set up from scratch. Shortly after setting up Wigwams, we were approached to manage Buttons and Bows. Since then we have set up the Children’s Triangle Nursery (2012), taken ownership of Little Learners (2013) and Wellington Nursery (2015).

“My main passion is to improve the outcomes for all children of Suffolk and fortunately we have the structures, resources and energy in place to be able to do this”.

The last 10 years, haven’t just been about expansion, we have seen lots of changes within the type of care and learning environments which we provide and within the sector as a whole. Over this time we have seen a real upskilling of the Childcare profession – staff are even more highly qualified and knowledgeable which is brilliant for the children. We are very lucky within our Group to have such a committed and hard working team, who always have the child’s best interests at heart. Our staff are not content with their lot – they are always looking to improve through additional qualifications or visiting inspirational settings around the UK. We have also seen a shift towards much closer working relationships with families – which again is a change for the better. As a group we focus much more on Outdoor play – we have a saying ‘There is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing’! Two years ago, we introduced Forest schooling into The Children’s Triangle Nursery. At the time, the Children’s Triangle did not have its own garden area and so I looked around for alternative outdoor solutions. Kate, the manager of the Children’s Triangle is now a fully qualified Level 3 Forest schools practitioner. The benefits were so great that

we have rolled out Forest visits to all of our Nurseries and other staff members are now qualifying as practitioners. My work is more than just a job, I am on call 24 hours 7 days a week. When the children were younger, it was easy to take them to work with me and they were delighted to have free access to the Nurseries with all its toys and resources. Now as they get older that has less appeal! However hopefully I am an inspiration for them to find and pursue a career which they love. I do work hard, but I also play hard! My family know that the weekends are real family time, and I love nothing more than all being together.

Today I am amazed at what we have achieved in such a short time. The Group now cares for approximately 300 children and employs over 80 staff. I am incredibly proud of all of our staff and the hard work and passion which they put into their roles.

Choose nature for your family this Christmas What better gift for your family this Christmas than helping them explore some of the very best of wild Suffolk, by buying them membership of Suffolk’s local nature charity, Suffolk Wildlife Trust. The Trust has more than 50 inspiring reserves to explore, each with puddles to splash in, trees to hide behind, birds to count, sticks to collect and plants to sniff – there’s simply a world of wild things just waiting to be discovered. With family activities at the Trust’s six education centres, termly magazine and newsletter before each holiday, you’ll never be short of wild ideas to enjoy nature again. Furthermore, membership directly funds the Trust’s work to keep Suffolk special, including maintaining reserves and helping species like water vole, otter and barn owl return to the county.

Suffolk Business

Sponsored by GenR8

Independent Business Review one day and eventaully did so in 2010. The business has changed from the film days to digital printing in the main. We also now do lots of passport photos which was not the case when I joined. What does the business have to offer families as whole or individual family members? As we provide passport photos and studio pictures for the whole family, this is a service for everyone, and the whole family tend to come in together. The personalised photo gifts, i.e Mugs, T-Shirts, key fobs etc. are for everyone too. Name, location and nature of the business: Snappy Snaps, Ipswich. Photo and Digital Specialists How long has the business been running? 28 Years and counting! Background as to why you started or took over the business and how the business has developed over time:I joined the business in 1998 having worked previously for an Estate agent in Ipswich, occasionally I took photos and went to Snappy Snaps to have films developed. When I left the estate agent I joined Snappy Snaps part time in 1997. I attended franchisee conferences with previous owner and decided in 2001 that I would buy the business

Why did you feel it was important for you to join the GenR8 scheme and why is it important for readers to support the scheme: I have always passionately believed in local independent businesses helping to provide a service to the local community. Independent business is at the heart of local town shopping. Ourselves along, with other local business like Alaturka restaurant and Bears Bowling are always happy to help and recommend each other whenever we can. For more information please visit: www.snappysnaps.co.uk/stores/ipswich

Help the local economy on Small Business Saturday Will you support your local small businesses this December? Why not pledge to purchase your Christmas shopping , and help your local economy at the same time! What better time to start than Small Business Saturday, which this year will be on 5 December. Why buy from our local independent businesses? Handmade goods and locally produced items, in-depth product knowledge and personalised advice, customer service, and a friendly and enjoyable shopping experience are just a few reasons why supporting our local businesses will in turn offer you some fabulous Christmas gifts for firends and family. You may not get the lowest prices, but you do get excellent value for money. Added to all of this, when you buy local you are making an important contribution to your local economy. Spending money with local businesses causes a ripple-effect, as those businesses in turn spend locally, and on and on. Various research has been undertaken, with results showing that when £10 is spent in a local shop, between £16 and £50 goes back into the local economy, helping to improve local prosperity and create jobs. Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities.
