In 2012, residents of Whitton, Whitehouse and Castle Hill were surprised and delighted to hear this news.... The Big Lottery Fund awarded North West Ipswich one million pounds to be spent within the community over ten years. A group was formed of 24 local residents - North West Ipswich Big Local Trust (NWI BLT). The resident led group aims to encourage involvement in making the community an enjoyable, exciting place. Since 2012 they have awarded over £80,000 in grants to help elderly people, playgroups, sports clubs, a school garden project and young peoples events. NWI BLT is currently working with the local credit union (Eastern Savings & Loans) to promote alternatives to illegal doorstep lending. The biggest project to date is the creation of a Skate Park in Whitehouse Park. Does your group or organisation working within the area need our support? NWI BLT awards various grants of up to £10,000 so please get in touch. Resident participation is paramount and NWI BLT needs your ideas on what you want to see happen. If you live in the area why not get in touch and spread the news to your neighbours. Clubs & Classes

Sponsored by Learn Play Grow

An overview of some of the best local clubs & classes available for the whole family to enjoy... Kumon

Kumon aim for each and every child who studies with them to become an independent, advanced learner, with a positive attitude to study. Children studying the Maths and English programmes develop independent learning skills and increased self-confidence as they work out how to overcome challenges by themselves. Through their unique method, children are supported to reach an advanced level of study. Kumon believe that by studying beyond the international standard for their age, children are best prepared to succeed in an increasingly global community. In addition to developing academic ability, Kumon study fosters in students the mind-set and skills for self-learning. Kumon is an independent study programme, but students are never alone. Their Instructors provide the guidance students need to take learning into their own hands, increasing their motivation to succeed and achieve. Every child is different, and so their programme of study should be too. Kumon individualised programmes enable students to progress to an advanced level, at their own pace, so they can realise their potential and experience success. Kumon is learning for the long run: if you want your child to be best prepared to succeed both at school and beyond, daily Kumon study can make all the difference. Baby & Toddler Talk

Sponsored by The Daisy Foundation

Introducing the Daisy Foundation Lazy Daisy has become well-known in Suffolk, in fact the very first classes were taught in Ipswich over ten years ago. Manager, Jo Cresdee tells us all about their recent changes...

Thousands of mummies and babies have joined our ground breaking Active Antenatal and Positive Touch & Movement classes. Our flagship program Daisy Birthing was one of the first pregnancy movement programs to gain approval by the Federation of Antenatal Educators as a recognised means of antenatal preparation (summer 2009) and we now have a team of over 160 fantastically skilled antenatal and postnatal teachers across the UK, Australia, Cyprus and France. The Daisy Foundation offers you via our network of teachers a truly unique range of classes and workshops across our Daisy Birthing®, Daisy Baby®, and Daisy Tots® programs, which together support women, families and infants throughout the entire peri-natal period. We are committed to excellent education, unconditional support, informed choice, supportive communities and nurturing confidence – for our teachers, mums, families and children.

So is Lazy Daisy now a charity? No, and Yes! Our company started out as Lazy Daisy Ltd, but in December 2014 we began trading under the new name of The Daisy Foundation in the UK, a company limited by guarantee – a social enterprise non-profit organisation. In essence all the profits that we make are reinvested into making a social change, providing more support for families who may not have previously have been able to access Daisy and finally training more teachers so that more women are able to access our training schemes and enjoy working for a company that puts people and community first. In the world of Daisy we use the following definition for our use of the word ‘Foundation’: An underlying basis or principle: We believe that every mum and baby should have a solid foundation of support, access to unbiased education, an unconditionally supportive community and a continuity of care that will support her through pregnancy, birth and parenthood. The Ipswich, Central and East Suffolk Branch of the Daisy Foundation classes have gone from strength to strength in recent years. The area us managed by Jo Cresdee who has been teaching Daisy in the area for nearly 3 years. In January 2015 our team expanded enabling us to start classes in Framlingham, Saxmundham, Stowmarket and Felixstowe. To find out more about our range of classes suitable for women from 14 weeks of pregnancy, our Couples Workshops and our range of baby and toddler classes please email Jo via jo-cresdee@thedaisyfoundation.com or call 07944 070 362. Our newest team members Alona Ochert - For the last 10 years Alona has been practising as an Aromatherapist and maternity reflexologist and now specialise in fertility and pregnancy. Mum of two children aged 7 & 4– Alona believes every woman should be armed with as much knowledge as possible of what her amazing body is capable of when she gives birth. “We don’t hear enough positive birth stories these days because women feel smug recounting how fantastic their own birthing experiences were. It was only when I decided to become a Daisy teacher that I finally told my own sister, who had gone through two fearful labours and painful births, about how positive my own births were. And mine were all down to being active, feeling totally confident and utterly empowered.” Josi Barker – Josi has lived in Ipswich for 6 years with her husband and two daughters. Before becoming a full time mum Josi worked as a Personal Trainer helping people to stay fit and healthy making the best of their bodies. “Whatever you want your birth to be whether it be in a hospital, at home, drug free or assisted it is your choice and I feel that if women are given enough information and support they can make the best choice for them and their baby. I do not want to tell people what they can and can’t do. I just want to give women the tools to be in control of their babies start to life in the world and Daisy is an excellent, easily accessible and friendly way in which to do it.” Rachel Brindley - Is a Speech and Language Therapist and Mum of two children aged 8 & 4. Rachel found Daisy when she was pregnant with her son. “After the birth of my daughter I felt I wanted to find something that would enable me to be more in control during my labour. I wanted to understand what was happening with my body and what I could do to help my labour progress or slow down! I was hoping that through being able to work with my body, I would maybe manage without any drugs. I was so relaxed after taking part in the antenatal Daisy classes I was initially unaware that I was having contractions! My waters had broken and the midwife confirmed the twinges were actually a contraction.”

Ipswich Town & Waterfront Did you know that Ipswich was the birthplace of Thomas Wolsey, the son of an Ipswich butcher who rose to the dizzy heights of becoming Cardinal Wolsey in King Henry VIII’s reign? Or that Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin also have connections with the town? Ipswich is a town steeped in history and has continued to produce talent and lay claim to more modern achievements, when in 1991 the Sir Norman Foster designed Willis Building became the youngest building at the time to be given Grade I listed building status. But it’s not just buildings and famous people of old that Ipswich is well known for. It is becoming increasingly known as a place to visit, a destination of culture, arts and heritage. Tourism is a growing industry for the town.

Only in December The Guardian featured Ipswich in a very positive travel review.

So what makes Ipswich so special? We spoke to Natalie Chaplin of Ipswich Town & Waterfront, the online community portal for Ipswich, and asked her that question. Here’s what she said: “I’ve lived in Ipswich all my life, and I love it here because there’s so much good stuff happening here. We have more beautiful park space per person in Ipswich than is enjoyed in many cities. Many of our galleries and interesting heritage venues (such as Christchurch Mansion and Ipswich Museum) are free of charge.

Fresh Start New Beginnings

As an Ipswitchian I love the arts and cultural opportunities! There are festivals galore here (Ip-Art, Pulse, SPILL, Maritime to name just a few) plus fine performance venues like The New Wolsey Theatre, The Regent, Dance East, Red Rose Chain and St Peter’s by the Waterfront. Ipswich is an ideal weekend destination for family entertainment and for anyone seeking a great night out”. Ipswich is a very good place to live and work. It’s big enough for everyone in the family to always find something interesting to do or see, but small enough to feel safe and very friendly.

what’s happening in the town. You’ll find local news and reviews, as well as independent businesses recommended by local customers, so whether you’re looking for somewhere to eat, a local hairdresser, an electrician or a bookkeeper, you’ll find it online here. Family events feature prominently, often with many listed as free or low cost. There’s plenty for grown-ups too. After all, mums and dads need and deserve their ‘me time’!

The Ipswich Waterfront community portal: www.ipswich-waterfront.co.uk is an ideal place to find out

Unfortunately bad things can happen and children can be targeted by people wanting to harm them. That is why the charity Fresh Start- new beginnings was set up in October 2012 so that we could help child victims of sexual abuse and offer support to their families. Child victims come in both sexes, all ages and from all walks of life with around 90% of them being abused by a family member or family friend. We have already helped over 300 Suffolk children.

individual need. We understand how traumatised they will be and how unusual their behaviour might seem to others who do not understand their responses. We offer them a safe place to unravel their thoughts and fears with a person who respects the confidentiality of their information and who will not be shocked or upset by what they hear. We help them process their abuse and teach them strategies to deal with effect of the abuse. If you would like your child to receive a service from us the forms are on our web site: www.fs-newbeginnings.org.uk. So just ask your GP, child’s school, police or any professional who knows about your situation to complete one for you.

About Us

Our Vision

We currently have 8 professionals with qualifications in social work, psychology and psychotherapy who are trained to work specifically with child victims of sexual abuse. We also have a team of support staff helping us, and a board of Trustees. Our patron is Hilary Devey, (she used to be in the Dragon’s Den). Our Head Office is in Ipswich and we work with children throughout Suffolk using doctor’s surgeries and community centres. At Fresh Start- new beginnings we understand how abuse affects the whole family and offer support to the protective parent and the siblings. For the victim we offer a service tailored to their

“To ensure all children and young people who are the victims of sexual abuse/exploitation have the opportunity to access help, advice, guidance and therapeutic intervention to aid their recovery.” Every child should have the right to a childhood free from sexual abuse.”

Family matters

Die another day! Inheritance provision sounds like something you don’t need to worry about until you reach your sixties. It’s true most of us think that it’s something we’ll sort out ‘when we get round to it’. Yet what would you do if your partner suddenly died, say in a car crash, and hadn’t made a will?

What if it is your ex-partner who suddenly dies and hasn’t made a will? If you’re divorced and have children that your ex-partner pays maintenance for, what happens next? When you die without making a will, you die intestate and the law dictates who inherits what in such circumstances. Thanks to Suffolk family solicitors Margary + Miller we’re going to have a look at a couple of different scenarios and see what happens and how you might stand in each case. Death and taxes are said to be the only two certainties in life; and making provision for your death is something we all need to take responsibility for, if only to make life easier for those we leave behind.

Scenario A

Scenario B

Gavin and Stacey are married. Gavin dies suddenly without having made a will. Gavin and Stacey own their house jointly. Ownership of their house and entitlement to the proceeds of sale automatically passes to Stacey. Stacey then inherits the first £250,000 of Gavin’s estate and half of the rest; any children share the other half over and above £250,000.

Gavin and Stacey are divorced with two children, Topsy and Tim, aged 7 and 5. Stacey lives in what had been the family home with Topsy and Tim. They reached an agreement regarding finances between them without taking legal advice, but agreed to split the ownership of the house 50:50 with an agreement that Stacey and the children can live there and the property not be sold until Tim finishes full time education.

What happened next?

What happened next?

The automatic transfer of the house makes it simple for Stacey. Whilst Gavin’s estate may otherwise have little in it, there may be sufficient for Stacey to continue to provide for their children.

Gavin pays maintenance for Stacey as the main childcare provider and for Topsy and Tim. Gavin suddenly dies without having made a will. Maintenance stops. Gavin’s estate is worth £105,000. This will pass to the children but Stacey has lost her maintenance.

Scenario C The situation remains that Gavin and Stacey are divorced with two children, but it is now a few years on and Gavin has re-married.

What happened next? Gavin and his new wife Ruth have bought a house, which is owned jointly and they have taken out a life policy to pay off the mortgage if either dies before the end of the mortgage term. Gavin dies without having made a will. The policy is applied to pay off the mortgage and the house passes to Ruth outside of the intestacy rules. Gavin’s estate is worth £50,000. Under the intestacy rules, this passes to Ruth. Stacey, Topsy and Tim lose their maintenance. No amount passes to Topsy and Tim. Ruth owns the house outright worth £200,000 plus she receives the £50,000.

A helping hand

The Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 offers a lifeline to Stacey, Topsy and Tim. In scenario B and C they are all entitled to apply under the Act because the intestacy rules mean that reasonable financial provision was not made for them. A spouse or former spouse who has not remarried can apply, as can a child of the deceased. There are other categories of people who can also apply, including any person deemed substantially maintained by the deceased immediately prior to death. Adult children can also make applications! The Court can make a range of orders, including the payment of lump sums or the transfer of property. It can even order that a property owned jointly by a deceased, which passes automatically outside of the will or intestacy rules, can be considered and taken into account. In scenario C, the Court could therefore order that the property owned by Gavin and Ruth be sold and some of the proceeds used to benefit Stacey, Topsy and Tim. Just in case it is not clear, all characters referred to are fictional! Rachel Cronin is a specialist in Inheritance Act issues and is also able to offer advice on a wide range of disputes. Margary + Miller Solicitors is a long established business providing professional legal services throughout Suffolk and beyond. With an established reputation built on reliability, customer service and flexibility, the company prides itself on providing quality advice, supported by legal expertise and local knowledge. Offering fixed fee and bespoke services, Margary + Miller Solicitors are confident that all of their services offer clients value for money. What would inspire you to try something new? In our new feature we hear from Suffolk families who have been inspired to take up a new hobby, return to education, set up a business or grow their own fruit & veg! In the first of our new series we hear Gemma’s story... 2013 was a life changing year for me...

I had been on maternity leave for a whole year following the birth of my son. On returning to work as a Learning and Development Trainer, a job I had held for 13 years, I knew almost instantly that things were just not right. I couldn’t think straight, I was permanently feeling under a black cloud and crying constantly. In truth I felt useless and buckling under the pressure of trying to be a good mum and good at my job. It all came to a head when I was signed off work with depression and anxiety. From previously having an almost perfect sickness record, I found myself off sick for a period of 5 months.

My whole ethos when starting the business was to make having a family portrait more affordable for the average person, as well as a lot of fun! I provide a photography service specialising in children, families and animals. Customers are welcome to either visit my home for their shoot or I offer a fully mobile service so can visit families in their home, or at an agreed venue where everyone can enjoy the experience. I think being a mum myself has certainly helped with communicating with the children and getting the most out of them in order to capture the perfect moment. I only started the business in May 2014 and am amazed by how well it is doing and how much job satisfaction I get from it. As well as shoots for families, I have also set up my mobile studio at pre-schools and toddler groups. This has been a great way of raising money for the groups as I give a percentage back of all photography sales to the group as a way to help them raise money for new equipment.

During my absence from work I received the news that my position was being made redundant. I went through so many mixed emotions, the initial shock, followed by the worry but eventually there was a realisation that I could turn this into a positive. It was a chance to change things for the better and do something completely different with my life. I have always loved photography but it had never gone any further than ‘happy snapping’ the family. Whilst looking through some family photos I had taken, I suddenly had an epiphany moment that photography could be something that I take forward and look to build a career out of. I started an Open University course on digital photography and loved every minute of it. After receiving really positive feedback from the tutors and other individuals on the course I then went on to complete a diploma in Portrait Photography. It was during these studies that ‘Gemma B Photography’ was born.

Life has changed dramatically for me since starting the business. I am able to set my own diary and goals and work around family life. I will certainly never look back and am looking forward to growing the business further. To find out more about Gemma B Photography please visit: www.gemmabphotography.co.uk

CRAFTY CAPERS... How to Make a Lovely Envelope

Instructions

Children love to write messages and letters for their friends and family and now with the help of our friends at Crafty Baba we can help make the perfect unique envelope for their special

1. Find some fabric that won’t fray over time. You need something without a loose weave and strong enough to be sewn – Felt, cotton or soft flannel is ideal. 2. Cut out the paper pattern downloadable from our website at www.craftybaba.co.uk and using pins, pin it to your chosen fabric and cut round it carefully. 3. Consider how you would like to fasten the envelope-will it be with a button? Velcro? A popper or perhaps ribbon? 4. Next, you can start to think about decorating the envelope. You might like to embroider the name of a special person on the front or write it with a fabric pen. You could applique a postage stamp or just write MAIL on the front! The world is your oyster. 5. Finally, we need to give it a stitch to finish it off. You need to sew along either side to join it together as in the diagram on the download.

You will need.... 1. Fabric-a fat quarter* of cotton or a piece of felt will be perfect. 2. A needle and thread 3. Something to fasten the

envelope like a ribbon or button.

Useful Tip: *a fat quarter is a piece of fabric measuring 18” x 22” and available from your local haberdashers.

Voila! Anyone getting a message in this lovely creation should be very happy.

March - April 2015

As Suffolk’s only homegrown financial services provider, Ipswich Building Society is uniquely placed to use their expertise to enhance learning. We let them tell us more... download and is available both on From primary school children to adults we want to help provide people with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their finances, enabling them to have the skills they need to be financially savvy. Since 2007 this has seen us spend over 2,500 hours in the classroom, with our programmes all delivered by our own trained staff. Starting early, our Money Days are for Year 2 children and focus on literacy, numeracy and creativity through stories, fun and games – each meeting the needs of the National Curriculum. Following the success of these activities we released a free app called My Puppy: Maths & Money which applies the same learning principles and will keep primary school aged children (and older!) entertained too. The app will always be completely free to

Android and from the App Store. We’re also working with Year 10 students through Money Metrics, our brand new programme introduced in 2015 designed to meet the new National Curriculum requirements for personal finance and citizenship. It’s an interactive session full of real-life scenarios, developed by an educational consultant and young people focus groups. There’s more on our website at: www.ibs.co.uk/ moneymetrics. We believe you’re never too old to learn which is also why we work with specialist adult groups and local prisons, creating bespoke programmes which fit their needs. During 2015 we want to dedicate 950 hours to financial education, so we’d love to hear from schools and organisations who feel they could benefit from any of our programmes. Visit www.ibs.co.uk

The big pedal 2015 The UK’s biggest school cycling & scooting competition returns for 2015.

Survey reveals that 76% of teachers whose schools took part in ‘The Big Pedal’ said that pupils continued to cycle and scoot to school following the event.

The UKs largest inter-school cycling and scooting competition, The Big Pedal, is set to return in 2015. The Big Pedal (March 2nd – 20th) is open to nurseries, primary and secondary schools and challenges them to compete against one another to make the most journeys to school by bike and scooter over 15 days. Run by charity Sustrans and funded by the Bicycle Association on behalf of the cycle industry through its Bike Hub scheme, The Big Pedal has become the UK’s largest cycling and scooting competition. Last year over 1,500 schools signed up to take part and pupils, teachers, parents, and siblings made over a million journeys (1,142,374) to school on their bikes and scooters in just 10 days. Ben Merry, Programme Development Officer at Sustrans said: “The Big Pedal is fun, inclusive and it helps schools to encourage whole families to lead more active lives, as well as reducing car traffic and pollution around the school gates. “Although the competition runs for three weeks, it has a lasting effect on the way that the school community travel to school; last year 76% of schools who took part in the Big Pedal said that pupils continued to cycle and scoot to school following the event.” By signing up to The Big Pedal schools will receive a wall-chart to record their progress, whilst a range of resources designed to support schools are available in the teachers section of the Sustrans website. Winning schools will receive prizes including bike and scooter stunt shows and equipment. To register your school go to: www.bigpedal.org.uk.

Last year over 1,200 schools took part in the event and teachers, parents and pupils made over a million journeys (1,142,374) to school on their bikes and scooters. A survey of teachers at schools that took part in the competition last year revealed: 76% said that pupils continued to cycle and scoot to school following the event 39% said that pupils who took part were noticeably happier throughout the day 29% said the event reduced traffic congestion around the school.

Charlie (who’s a boy) feels like he has to make choices all the time, what to watch, what to wear, when to get up, what does he want to eat… and he hates it. Charlie would really rather let his Mum or Dad make all his decisions for him. Charlie (who’s a girl) loves making decisions, so much so that she really likes making them for everyone around her. So when they’re both asked at school to think about what jobs they might like to do in the future Charlie (who’s a boy) goes into a flat spin, and Charlie (who’s a girl) knows exactly what to do! Do you know someone who is Raising the Bar in Suffolk?

The Raising the Bar awards celebrate success and inspiration across the education system in Suffolk and we want your nominations for people, places and projects that are Raising the Bar. The Raising the Bar project is Suffolk’s response to tackling levels of education attainment. Although the project is led by Suffolk County Council, solving this problem is not something any one person or organisation can do alone – only by working together will we be successful. Celebrating success and sharing best practice is an important part of the project and you can help us to recognise the shining lights of Suffolk education by making a nomination for a Raising the Bar award. You can nominate online at www.rtbawards.com. We are looking for your nominations for children and young people, people working in education, as well as education settings, business partners, collaboration and innovation projects, and an unsung hero. If you want to nominate a child or young person, there are three categories to choose from: Rising Star of the Year, Young Achiever of the Year and Inspirational Young Person of the Year. Each of these categories is then

split into age groups of primary, secondary and post 16 education and training, as well as a category for a rising star for children in early years. Educational Setting of the Year is your chance to nominate a nursery, pre-school, childminder, school, college or other learning provider that you have seen achieve significant improvements for the children and young people that they work with. Perhaps you want to nominate a particular teacher, lecturer or educator who is excelling, or someone in middle leadership (for example a head of department, head of year, a room or curriculum leader) who is really inspiring their pupils or learners. Educational Leader of the Year is the chance to nominate a pre-school leader, head teacher or principal for their inspirational leadership and educational impact. There are also categories for governors and support staff (paid staff including teaching assistants, midday supervisors or administration staff), giving the

chance to recognise the impact they have on education. For unpaid volunteers or parents who make an outstanding contribution to a pre-school, school or other educational setting, the Unsung Hero of the Year category is the opportunity to show your appreciation for the commitment they have shown, often going beyond what is asked for or expected. In the Business Partner of the Year category you can nominate organisations that promote and support education, especially in raising the aspirations of children and young people. Nominations for the Raising the Bar Awards 2015 are open to all public funded educational establishments in Suffolk (or partners working with them); early years including childminders, nurseries and pre-schools, Local Authority maintained schools, colleges, academies, free schools and Pupil Referral Units. After nominations close on April 21, our expert team of judges will have the task of narrowing down the entries to three finalists in each category. These finalists will then be invited to the awards ceremony at the end of June, where the Raising the Bar Awards 2015 winners will be announced. Whether it’s a terrific teacher, a great governor, a super school or a brilliant business partner, make sure you don’t miss out on the chance to nominate someone you think is Raising the Bar.

Independent Business Profile Name, location and nature of the business: Baker & Barista Coffee Shop, St Peters Street in Ipswich. Was the coffee shop easy to find? (Parking near?) The coffee shop is nestled in amongst many lovely local independents shops on St Peters Street but with their shop branding outside and the cakes very visible from the pavement outside it is very easy to find. There are many short stay car parks nearby if you just want to pop in for a treat with the kids after school or there are longer stay car parks both in town or near the Waterfront if you are looking to include a coffee stop or lunch break into a more serious shopping trip.

Is the coffee shop family friendly? I found Baker and Barista very family friendly, they offer children’s sized portions of both food and drink, a basket of toys and books for younger visitors and an enclosed garden children can explore during the warmer months. Baker and Barista are more than happy to support any mums who are breast feeding and although the size of the shop does not lend itself to having many buggies or push chairs parked up inside, high chairs are available and all ages of children are catered for and made to feel very welcome. Did you find it good value for money? The coffee and cakes we enjoyed in the shop were in line cost wise with any other coffee shop in town and having been freshly baked on site not only looked and smelt delicious

New Wolsey Theatre: Big Story / Little Story

but our very generous sized pieces of cake tasted delicious. Would you recommend this coffee shop to friends? I would recommend anyone to visit Baker and Barista, the food and drink, the service and the atmosphere were all fantastic and I will definitely be taking my daughter back for some after school treats maybe even afternoon tea. Plus if you are a bit pushed for time a takeaway service is offered so you could still nip in and treat yourself to some goodies to take home. Baker and Barista are part of the GenR8 scheme we asked Hannah and Beth why it was important for them to join the scheme? ‘We like the creativity that independent businesses bring to Ipswich. customers great service and value for money. As a street we all like to support each other’. Baker & Barista Coffee House can be found at 19,St Peters Street Ipswich. 01473 808142. www.bakerandbarista.co.uk

kind, funny and wise. She inspired me to do the same thing when I grow up and to read my books with more expression. By Evie G.

During February we had the pleasure of reviewing the New Wolsey Theatre’s Story Teller sessions, What I liked about my Big Story Room On The Broom Session. I liked doing the actions and noises along with the story being read to us. I liked the adjectives and the describing words which were used. My favorite thing was when we made a cauldron out of cushions and we imagined what we were throwing in the cushion cauldron and what came out. I thought the story teller Helen was

What I liked about the little Story Room On The Broom Session. Anyone that can hold the attention of an audience of 3-5 year olds has my complete respect..!! My little boy was absolutely gripped, the story teller had such a lovely way of involving the whole group. The children could all choose a cushion, kick off their shoes and get comfy. It was more than just listening to a story, they went on a little adventure. Whilst Thomas loved hearing one of his favourite books (great coincidence) read with such enthusiasm, as a parent it also made me realise the fun that could be had at story time. By Thomas’ Mum. PARENTS PLACE As parents, the art of juggling various responsibilities becomes almost second nature. In this feature we offer you the chance to take five minutes out of your busy day to find out how one Suffolk mum manages her own busy work and family commitments. We’ve also got some great seasonal fashion advice from image and style consultant Thomasin Newton, perfect for hectic mums who still want to look good on the school run!

What to Buy Now Spring is in the air and it’s finally time to throw off the overcoats and welcome back the sun! Between season dressing can be tricky as you can’t quite wear summer trends as it’s not warm enough in the UK but we’re all tired of winter woolies, boots and hats. What is needed now is pieces that can be worn in the spring but can also be worn in high summer with slightly different items. So what to buy or wear now to look stylish but keep the chill out? Firstly, I would suggest a long line waistcoat - it can be worn now with jeans, trousers, knits and boots but worn later with just a t-shirt or breton top and culottes or even over shorts and summer shifts. White plimsoles have been around for a while but are everywhere this season. If you don’t already own a pair, it is definitely worth the investment as they can be worn now with jeans and trousers and later with bare legs and shorts, dresses and skirts. They’re a classic item much like the trench coat that works year after year. A denim boiler suit could also be a great purchase. Wear now with long sleeved t-shirts underneath and a gilet or long line waistcoat and wear later with just heels or sandals and a statement necklace. Finally, wide legged trousers are a must for this year. Wear now with knits and warmer tops and flats/plimsoles and wear later with heeled sandals, summer tops and t-shirts. Any classic colour be it white, navy or even black will be endlessly useful. Happy shopping! For more information call: 07500 443974 or visit: www.thomasinnewtonimageconsultant.com

March - April 2015

Mum in business Your name: Rachel Cronin

Name, location and nature of your employers: Margary + Miller Solicitors, Felixstowe How long has the business been running and the reason why you joined? Margary + Miller has been running as a legal practice for over 100 years. Currently we have four offices around Suffolk and employ around 50 people. I was looking to return to work after my youngest started school and the divorce was settled! I chose Margary+Miller over other offers because they offered flexibility around my children so when the kids were at primary school, it was accepted that I would need to do the school runs. I work 30 hours a week (officially) and can connect to work’s server from home. It means I can catch up late in the day or make calls if I need to. Most parents increasingly need and want this sort of flexibility around the needs of their children. If a business offers that to a working parent, it is more attractive than one that won’t. I have to be flexible too though, so for example, an early start for an early finish has worked well for me in the past. Now my two are older and at high school, we can all be more flexible – as long as we each know where we are! What do you enjoy about your role and working for this COMPANY? I enjoy problem solving and applying the law. I also like giving practical advice because sometimes the law itself offers impractical solutions. I also enjoy meeting a host of different people with a wide range of issues to resolve. Dispute resolution covers a wide range of legal subjects and I will not always know a particular area of law as well as a colleague who specialises. It’s a friendly place to work and I am able to go to colleagues easily for their advice without any problem. What was the best piece of advice regarding work you were ever given? Most problems can be solved. If you are not sure how, then take some time to check – often the answer then becomes clear! What does the future hold for you / the business? It’s exciting right now at Margary+Miller. Most of us need a solicitor from time to time and we’re updating our website to ensure our clients feel like we talk their language and feel comfortable coming and sharing their important information; as our strapline says, Because your matter matters. How do you fit your work around family life? First and foremost, I work to support my family. I want to be able to hear whatever the kids want to tell me about their day, and I try and help with the homework etc. The kids know that I might have homework too and now they are older, it can’t wait ‘til they are in bed. What advice would you give to any parents considering returning to work and/or starting up their own business? Most of us have little choice about going back. I work every day of the working week, though not necessarily full days, so clients know they can always get hold of me. Not every job offers that level of flexibility. When I have a lot on, I have to resolve how to do it. I do try and consider my workload and family as one: I must achieve the following today... So think about the sort of job you do and how you might need to organise yourself. Always make sure your children know the contingency plans and that there is always one so they don’t worry. I have been helped by parents of other children when I was stuck in traffic, or just had to get something done. Knowing I’ve got a back-up has proved necessary on more than one occasion!

Here you can watch how a cow is milked and if you’ve enjoyed the new Shawn the Sheep film, see how sheep are really shorn and feel the weight of the fleece! Suffolk’s most active communities crowned Suffolk County Council has crowned this year’s winners of Suffolk’s most active community competition.

As well as the honour of receiving this title, the winner in each category will receive an engraved brass plaque as a permanent recognition of their achievements. Each winner will also have an opportunity to receive support from the Suffolk Most Active County team to explore ways in which they can be helped to build on their success in getting the local community active. The competition set out looking for communities that could demonstrate how they are getting people active, whether through new walking or cycling routes, programmes of activities in village halls, improved community facilities or new community events.

The winners and runners-up were:Town winner: Kesgrave Kesgrave has created great community cohesion, it constantly encourages local people to partake in an extremely wide variety of activity and sport. The whole community gets behind fundraising for events in aid of developing local activities. Parkrun was set up and started in September 2014 and has already seen hundreds of local participants. Sport and physical activity is easy to come across in Kesgrave with the floodlit all weather ground, the community sports hall in the centre plus the multi-use games area at the high school. It’s clear Kesgrave’s priority is to ensure all ages are well catered for. Such a wide range of opportunity the hardest decision is knowing which activity to choose.

Active towns and villages across Suffolk were urged to come forward and shout about how they’re championing sports and physical activity in their local community. Whether it is football, dog-walking, yoga, hockey or Zumba; the county council want to celebrate the hard work and commitment of these communities.

Town runner-up: Southwold and Reydon The town of Southwold interlinks its activities with Reydon to enable more local people to benefit from ann array of activities that take place. They recognise the ageing population and have rolled out activities such as chairbased exercises and specific residential home actives that the elderly can take part in. Whilst also providing pre-school keep fit classes and a skate park for the younger generation. They have been successful in gaining funding to develop the rugby club and pavilion, expand the local football facilities and had outdoor gyms installed. With future plans to develop more opportunities for the disabled and younger parents.

Small village winner: Middleton-cum-Fordle

games area ensuring they make the most of all available facilities in the village. The community has played a big part in fundraising for the multiuse games area and they collaborate with many organisations to enhance the villages offer. They hold an annual rounders competition, cycling events and have a walking group which brings together many of the villagers.

Large village winner: Brantham Brantham has a lively culture of physical activity ranging from zumba, orienteering, cricket, netball, gardening club, dance, cycling club and yoga which are all popular and frequent. Residents are active cyclists, walkers and runners and the parish council works hard to promote these activities by constant communication with the villagers. With the annual 5 mile village run, annual bulb planting and the annual litter pick, Brantham has shown a really active community spirit.

Middleton cum Fordley has a vast range of activities available to local people, despite its small population; Tai Chi, Table Tennis, Rambling, Tennis, Boules, Pilates, Golf, Zuma and Rounders. They have proactively sought external funding and are in the process of installing a new cricket pitch, small pavilion and toilets.

Large village runner-up: Hundon

Small village runner-up: Mendham

Mendham offers numerous activities at the village hall, primary school and multi-use

Hundon has activities from Hockey, Inside Bowls, Pilates, Badminton, Tai Chi and cricket. The playing field is used by both senior and junior members of the village. They are continually setting up new activities in the village hall with Pilates and Tai Chi successfully started in January 2014, these get good numbers of villagers regularly participating. Health & wellbeing

The benefits of trampolining There are so many benefits to trampolining; it’s a wonder not everybody is doing it! And it’s good for children and adults alike; it can even help to reduce cellulite! It’s a great alternative to running, if running isn’t your thing, because trampolining or rebounding is kinder on the physical stress put on lower limbs and feet which running can sometimes affect. Using the trampoline takes up to 80% off the stress of your weightbearing joints and it’s a super form of exercise for those physicallychallenged, recuperating from some accidents or injuries and for anyone who has been sedentary and are starting an exercise programme.

The benefits of trampolining for children with ADHD & Autism

But what are the specific benefits without all the science?

Jumping about on a trampoline, that’s got to be fun, right....? But have you ever considered that it can help manage one of the most diagnosed neurological disorders, ADHD? Children with ADHD have unbelievable amounts of energy that they cannot just ‘calm down’. A day at School turns them into a shaken up bottle of fizzy drink with the lid still on and that all needs to go somewhere. We have been speaking to the local support organisation ADHD & Autism and Ipswich based Trampoline specialists Jumpking to find out a bit more about the benefits of trampolining. As well as it being a recreational past time, there are some real scientific benefits too. Children with ADHD can often have balance and coordination issues and jumping while paying attention can be really helpful, such as counting the jumps or playing Simon says and touching their nose for example. As well as helping their coordination, jumping can also help their concentration. Annie Clements, Chief Executive of ADHD & Autism comments “Many of the teenagers we work with will say they wish they had mini trampolines in classrooms so they could jump and listen as they find it easier than trying to listen while they are having to sit still. We still have much to learn about ADHD but trampolining is definitely something that can help some of the children we meet”. Steve O’Brien, from Jumpking Uk adds “We supply a large range of trampolines, and not just for recreational use. We have spent a lot of time researching the health related benefits particular for children with ADHD in order to offer families the best advice”

It’s fun! Strengthens the heart (Cardiovascular health) Increases energy and sense of vitality Firms and tones the muscles Low impact on joints Great for skeletal system and increasing bone mass Helps improve digestion Boosts lymphatic drainage and immune function Helps improve balance by stimulating the vestibule in the middle ear Helps improve the effects of other exercise Helps circulate oxygen throughout the body to increase energy. A whole body exercise that improves muscle tone throughout the body. It’s a great holistic health giver, bringing both physical and mental benefits to adults and children alike. I Low Impact.

If you’re interested in trampolining for your children or for yourself, Ipswich Borough Council has adult classes on a Tuesday at Gainsborough at 10:30 and 18:30 and Junior trampolining MondaySaturday at three centres, Gainsborough; Whitton and Northgate. For details of times and venues visit www.ipswich.gov.uk/sport or call 01473 433644.

Case Study My daughter aged 8 has one of the garden ones with the enclosure - she has ADHD, suspected Autism and low muscle tone. The trampoline has been great for her and she spends so much time on it. She loves to both jump and sit and ‘dream’ on it. I have a feeling it helps her ‘zone out’ when she needs to almost like her mind focuses on the repetitive jumping rather that whizzing round and round- I’m glad we spent out for it. She also loves to take cushions and blankets on it and make a den, it helps her calm down and it so it helps me as too! Useful Contacts: www.autismandadhd.org | www.jumpking.eu. @familiessuffolk

More activities, more choice, more fun… Easter in Ipswich

The Easter programme from Ipswich Borough Council is literally bursting at the seams! With everything from archery, dance, swimming and roller-skating to Egyptian Fun Days, Egg-stravaganza, free basketball roadshows and doorstep sport sessions. And if your children are also into arty stuff, they can work with an artist to create amazing mixed media artwork inspired by clouds and the sky or use clay and a range of flowers to imprint patterns and create their own fabulous paperweights and fridge magnets. Most mums, dads and grandparents know that it can be a real headache keeping kids occupied throughout the school holidays, not to mention causing a healthy dent in your bank balance. And once all the Easter eggs are found and eaten, kids need to burn off some energy. So plan some sport, swimming, play, art and crafts or walking into their holiday fun and whilst you’re at it, why not join them for some quality time in the pool, a spot of tennis or badminton or a few bounces on the trampoline. Being active together as a family is so much fun! The holiday activities include 4 sports centres; Gainsborough, Whitton, Maidenhall and Northgate, Crown Pools and Fore Street pool, Ipswich Museum and Christchurch Mansion, the Ipswich Art School, plus there’s a host of free activities across Ipswich Parks as well. A lot of the activities on the programme don’t need to be booked in advance, giving you even more freedom to be spontaneous on the day and depending on the weather! But a few do require booking and it’s best to do this as early as possible as numbers are limited. Details of all the activities during the holiday will be available online from the 13th March including information about the Junior iCard Spring Saver. www.ipswich.gov.uk/schoolholidays.
