What’s in this issue Welcome to our biggest issue yet! There is so much going on in the holidays - and it’s all here! Whether you want a fun packed day out as a family or you want to sign your little ones up for an afternoon of pond dipping or crafts or perhaps a holiday camp or sports course we can help. So you can make the most of everything that we’ve crammed in, here is a brief guide to what is listed where: Our feature “50 Great Things to do in the Holidays is a list of ideas of things you can do or places to visit - most of them aren’t date specific (although a few are!). The Diary dates that start on page 16 are events listed by date which incorporates fetes, events, exhibitions and children’s workshops which last a morning, afternoon or day. Workshops and courses that last more than a day will be listed under the relevant sections of: Drama and Dance Workshops, Sports Courses or Holiday Camps. So what I’m trying to say is that we did our best to put everything under the right category, but it wasn’t always easy so the best thing to do is to read it all to make sure you don’t miss anything! I hope you enjoy it and I hope you have a fabulous summer.

Farnham resident Helen Brady recently took the plunge and gave up city life in London to start her own mural and decorative painting business. Having obtained her degree in Fine Art and Spanish a number of years ago, Helen decided that a return to her roots would allow her to pursue her dream career in painting and design. Her services range from full floor-to-ceiling wall murals, to decorative borders and motifs, or hand-painted designs on furniture. See more of her creations at www.inspired-spaces.co.uk. Please contact Helen for your free consultation, by calling 07885 761 532 or by email at helen@inspired-spaces.co.uk.

BRIGHT AND BEADIFUL Helen de Sarandy, a mum of two from Surrey, was made redundant as a teacher so decided to turn the recession into a positive force by starting her own business making lariats (necklaces without clasps). Helen has not ‘looked back’ since. She said: “I love experimenting with bright colours and different textures. I sold my lariats at school fairs in the run-up to Christmas and ended up selling out! It is so satisfying. I would say ‘follow your dream’, but also, test the market first, be careful what you spend and make sure you find the right people to help you, as I did.” Visit www.lariats.co.uk

Daisy Birthing™ (YogaMumma): Weekly movement based sessions which allow you to enjoy 1hr 15mins of gentle birth dance (yoga inspired movement and active birthing tuition) coupled with breathing education and concluding with a fantastic ‘self hypnosis’ inspired birth relaxation. Innovative new booster seats UK law states that every child under the age of 12 and shorter than 135cm must travel with a child seat or booster seat. But there are times when this can be difficult – such as when you are going on holiday or travelling in a taxi. A mum of two has taken matters into her own hands and come up with an innovative solution. The BubbleBum is a portable, lightweight, inflatable car booster seat for children aged between 3-11. It easily deflates and folds flat so that kids or mums can carry it in rucksacks or handbags, making it perfect for holidays, rental cars, taxis, coach journeys, school trips or car pooling. The BubbleBum has been approved under the UN ECE Regulation R44/04 for safety for both Groups 2 and 3. It is available for £24.99 from www.bubblebum.co.uk. The SitSac Booster Combo is an award-winning innovation from Sweden. It’s a booster seat with the functionality of a backpack. SitSac’s built-in straps allow your child to carry their booster seat on their back and then the integrated backpack conveniently separates from the booster seat and holds enough to ensure they have everything they need for a sleep-over or a day away with their friends. It is for 4-12 year olds and approved according to the current European Child Safety Standard ECE R 44-04. SitSac is available at www.sitsac.co.uk for £79.99.

News and Views Guildford welcomes new Play Rangers to keep kids active!

for Away Days & Holidays

Thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery Fund, Guildford Borough Council is launching a new FREE service to encourage children to play freely outdoors. Guildford’s new Play Rangers will visit different sites in communities across Guildford Borough and will engage children and young people in outdoor play whatever the weather.

FREE PUPPET

with all Day sack orders*

Play Rangers are qualified professionals with experience of working with children and young people in a range of different environments. Using a variety of materials and equipment they will work to encourage groups of young people to play in imaginative ways. Many of the items that they will use have a variety of uses to encourage children and young people to work creatively to make something happen. Through their work, Guildford’s Play Rangers will establish relationships with children and young people and provide them with role models and someone to talk to. As these relationships develop children will be asked to help plan sessions to make sure they really get what they want out of it. Over time this work will aim to increase the confidence of the children and young people and encourage them to make the most of the recreation grounds and other venues around the area. Parents are more than welcome to join in sessions. They are aimed at 8-12yr olds but children older than this are welcome and under 8s are also welcome (with a parent). Play Rangers currently operate in Ash, and in the summer holidays will be in other areas of the borough as well. If you’d like to find out more or find details of when and where the Play Rangers will be, visit www.guildford.gov.uk/playrangers or email playrangers@guildford.gov.uk. Guildford Borough Council are also looking for volunteers to work with the Play Rangers and support their work, subject to CRB clearance.

Under 5s Let’s get together and be Cheeky this summer! The NCT (National Childbirth Trust) the UK’s largest parenting charity is calling on everyone to hold a Cheeky Monkeys Tea Party and help raise funds for the NCT’s Postnatal line. Cheeky Monkeys Tea Parties are held every summer between May and September. The parties provide a fantastic opportunity for parents and kids across the country to get together with friends, family and the local community and raise money to aid the vital work of the NCT. This year the NCT Cheeky Monkeys Tea Parties are raising funds to support the development of the NCT Postnatal Line. The helpline has been set up by the NCT to support parents in their early days of parenthood. The helpline is staffed by experienced NCT postnatal leaders and by listening and responding to individual concerns they help parents to see their difficulties in context, appreciate the positive things that they are achieving and help them to move forward in the best way for themselves and their baby. Belinda Phipps, the charity’s Chief Executive explains why the new helpline is so important. “Life with a new baby can be an amazing experience. However, for some it can be quite a daunting whirlwind, leaving new parents feeling nervous or lacking in confidence. Our new helpline will be open to all parents so they can call us and get support when they need it most.” Their aim is to raise £50,000 this year which will be used to extend the opening hours of the helpline. Every penny raised helps. As little as £50 will enable them to help 12 new parents cope with the challenge of becoming a parent; help them to be there for them. The Cheeky Monkeys Tea Party is open to everyone and it is very easy to run. Your party can be small (get together with a couple of friends and families) or BIG in size (invite the WHOLE town to your party). Some ideas for your party are: have a barbeque bash, a picnic party, cream tea or a dress up themed party but you can make your event as genuinely individual as you want. To help you get started, the NCT provides you with lots of ideas for your party such as quizzes, arts and crafts and monkey-themed games for children, or why not try one of our cake recipes from www.nct.org.uk/cheekymonkeys.

All you need to do is: • Register at www.nct.org.uk/cheekymonkeys to receive

your party pack • Invite all your friends and family • Have fun! If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Cheeky Monkeys Tea Party coordinator on 020 8752 2388 or send an email to cheekymonkeys@nct.org.uk Let’s go bananas!

Local Mum brings Creation Station to Surrey Local Mum Jackie Farrow is helping Surrey kids get creative and have fun with the award-winning Creation Station. The arts and crafts sessions for toddlers and pre-schoolers have been running in the UK for eight years and have inspired over 15,000 children, but have never made it to Surrey - until now! Jackie has just been awarded the opportunity to run the Creation Station franchise in the Surrey area.

Are you completely exhausted? Does your baby need settling at night? Do you need help with sleep training? Get yourself a good night’s sleep! Call on our experienced team of Night Nannies.

Jackie says "I am so excited about encouraging children to develop their imaginations and have fun with paint, glue, glitter, clay and an exciting range of materials and tools, and helping parents be creative with their children without having to tidy up afterwards! I love having arty fun with my own children, and am thrilled to be building on that with the Creation Station." Creation Station sessions are underpinned by the Early Years Foundation Stage, and were awarded the Gold standard in the Practical Pre-School Awards. The emphasis is on inspiring children’s imaginations and supporting them in their own journey of discovery, while also building their parents’ confidence in enjoying creative activities with them. The first activities will be in Godalming, with term-time sessions for 1-4 year olds and holiday sessions for 1-11 year olds through the summer. For more information visit http://www.thecreationstation.co.uk or call Jackie on 0845 303 9450.

Use it, don’t waste it 8.3 million tonnes of food and drink goes to waste in the UK every year. The Surrey Waste Partnership (Surrey County Council working with the 11 district and borough councils) is running Surrey’s own Love Food Hate Waste campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the need to reduce food waste. £12 billion worth of food and drink goes to waste in the UK every year, so the campaign aims to show Surrey families how they could save up to £50 a month on their food shopping bill, simply by cutting down on throwing away food. Shopping, cooking and eating habits are hard to change, but the good news is that by doing some easy everyday things in the home you can waste less food, which is a benefit to your pocket and the environment too. Shop smart • Before you do your next shop, check what you have left, be creative and try something new. • Make a list so you only buy what you need. • Buy your food loose where possible to avoid buying more than you need. • Treat yourself to some quality ingredients; it will make you think harder about waste. Storage tips • Keep an eye on the ‘best before’ and ‘use by’ dates. • Keep your fridge, freezer and cupboard stocked with basic food staples so you can use them with leftover vegetables, salad or meat. • Store food properly – preserve and your food will live extra days, weeks and even months. • Place newer items at the back of your fridge, to ensure items do not remain unused past the appropriate date. • Keep the fridge at a cool 1 - 5 degrees and chilled food will stay fresh for longer. • Freeze food that won’t get eaten in time. The ‘best before’ dates are more about quality than safety, except for eggs. So when the date runs out it doesn’t mean that the food will be harmful, but it might begin to lose its flavour and texture.

Cook less • Weighing and measuring food helps with achieving perfect portions, removing the guesswork. • There are many cooking utensils that can help – spaghetti measure, tablespoon, measuring spoon, weighing scales. • If you do make too much, use leftovers for lunch the next day or freeze and work it into next week’s meals. Did you know? • Wasted food costs the average family over £600 per year. • Nine out of ten Surrey residents throw away some uneaten food. • Two thirds of Surrey residents throw away food that’s gone off. Why is food waste bad for the environment? Food waste has serious environmental implications too. The amount of food we throw away is a waste of resources. Just think about all the energy, water and packaging used in food production, transportation and storage. This all goes to waste when we throw away food. Lovely leftovers Over the next few issues, look out for delicious leftover recipe ideas, from local Surrey chef, Carmela Tomkins. Be inspired! For more tasty tips on cutting the cost of your food bill and making the most of your leftovers, visit www.lovefoodsurrey.com

Eco page Help with composting To encourage people to get composting a team from the Surrey Waste Partnership will be attending a selection of popular fairs and local village fetes over the next few months. Composting experts will be on hand to offer advice and answer any questions. Free information booklets and FAQ factsheets will be handed out for residents to take home. Plus visitors will be able to look inside a compost bin to understand how compost is produced (see dates opposite). Residents who want to buy a bin or to dig up more advice on how to turn their table scraps and garden waste into compost, can visit www.surreycc.gov.uk/getcomposting or phone 0844 571 4444. See bottom of page for details on how to save money when buying your compost bin.

Save 15% on your energy bills! We all know that we should save energy, in the home, at work and when we travel, but how can we measure our household energy use and really find out how much it is costing us? Now you can borrow an energy monitor FREE from any of the 52 Surrey libraries to help you. The monitor will read exactly how much household electricity you are using and how much it is costing you. So far over 800 Surrey homes have tried out the monitors!

How do I use the energy monitor? It’s simple and totally safe – the base monitor has a crocodile clip and all you need to do is clip this round the insulated power lead near the fuse box in your home, turn on the kettle, hoover or hairdryer then check the results on the mobile unit.

Will they really help me save money? The monitor itself does not directly save you money, but according to manufacturers it instigates behaviour change, ie when you use the monitor you’ll be more

How do I get hold of a monitor? You can borrow an energy monitor from all 52 Surrey Libraries (including mobile units). As long as you are a library member you can borrow one, and remember they are FREE to borrow. If there are none available, you will be placed on the waiting list and will be informed when the next monitor is available.

Who is involved in this scheme? The scheme is funded by Surrey CC and supported by the Surrey Climate Change Partnership (all Surrey local authorities working together to tackle climate change).

Tell us about your experience If you borrow one of the monitors and have reduced your home energy as a result, we want to hear from you. Send your story to us at climatechange@ surreycc.gov.uk. We would also welcome your help in completing a short survey. For further information about climate change issues affecting Surrey visit www.surreycc.gov.uk/climatechange.
