News and Views Maisy’s Children’s Parties launch in West Surrey Maisy’s Children’s Parties was founded by Ann-Marie Christou in 2012. Having recently moved to Guildford Ann-Marie is very excited to launch in the Surrey West area. Quote FSW for 10% discount in March and April

Ann-Marie was a member of the National Youth Theatre from a young age, completed an English and Drama Degree at the University of Surrey along with an MA in Acting at East 15 Acting School and teaches English at Guildford College. Maisy’s Children’s Parties naturally incorporates her years of experience in drama, teaching and in children’s events. Parties can be themed to the child’s (or parent’s) choice and the children are led on an adventure, play lots of musical games, get involved with some interactive magic, along with puppets, parachute fun, balloon modelling, face painting/transfer tattoos, bubbles and heaps of fun and giggles. Maisy’s will create a party that’s just right for the birthday girl or boy and all their little guests. Quote FSW for 10% discount in March and April! For more information contact Ann-Marie via email info@maisys-childrens-parties.co.uk or call 0208 123 6484

Register Now For Wear A Hat Day Wear A Hat Day is a fun-filled, annual brain tumour awareness event helping support research. The organiser, Brain Tumour Research, is asking families, children and schools across the UK to put Thursday 24 March 2016 in their diaries and don a hat to support the cause. Involving families and school children in the campaign is poignant, given that brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under the age of 40. Children have lost parents, family members and teachers, and yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. Schools, nurseries, organisations and individuals can all register by visiting braintumourresearch.org/wearahatday. You will receive a fabulous fundraising pack containing an assortment of colourful posters, leaflets and balloons to help you start promoting your fundraising.

Childcare Update Unfortunately we didn’t have space in our Childcare feature in our Jan/Feb issue to include Childminders, but they are obviously a very important childcare option. We asked local childminder, Tracy Oram, to tell us the benefits of Childminders: There are many myths around registered childminders and the service we provide. Each childminding home is unique, each family is unique so there is no set rule for how each childminder operates. However we are all regulated by Ofsted and have to follow the same curriculum as other childcare settings. This means that we ensure each child is provided with fun and educational activities to stimulate and encourage development. But it’s not just that. We provide a bespoke service to families, tailored to individual needs. We are not restricted by conventional opening hours and routines. Often providing ad hoc and overnight care to families. Our services can evolve and adapt to the changing needs of the children. We care for mixed age groups allowing children to learn from each other and siblings to be cared for together. Often looking after children from babies’ right through to teens. We take children into our homes and treat them like family often going above and beyond our ‘job role’. We provide a varied mix of external activities, visiting groups, gyms, parks, soft play and shops allowing children to interact with others and experience different environments. We can also visit the seaside, museums or the zoo to encourage children’s interests. We could be a cheaper alternative often charging by the hour to suit your individual needs, also we can accept the government funding and childcare vouchers to help with costs. All registered childminders have to complete regular training in first aid, safeguarding children and food hygiene. It doesn’t stop there as we often spend our evenings and weekends completing various courses and qualifications to ensure we provide high standards of care to the children and families who use our services. It is essential that you visit different childminders to get a complete view of the services they offer and it’s important to check your childminder is registered with Ofsted so you can be sure they are compliant with all the rules and regulations.

Under 5s News What if the daily household jobs became an opportunity to comfort and bond with your baby? Slings can be a total life-saver!

By Janine Ebling As a postnatal doula working in the Guildford area, my work with new families has enlightened me about how beneficial it is to carry your baby close whilst still being able to do the laundry, make some lunch and even hoover and empty the dishwasher! I wanted to share this love of ‘babywearing’ (carrying your child in a sling) amongst local families, and so I recently opened GUILDFORD SLING LIBRARY to give everyone a chance to find the right carrier for them.

The library is a drop-in session where parents can try out a few different baby carriers from our wide selection, get advice on which carrier might suit their needs best, and receive pointers on how to get a good, comfortable fit, carrying their little one in the safest way. They can then hire out the carrier for a fortnight for a small fee to test it for comfort and ease of use before perhaps going on to buy one of their own. Hiring a carrier first is an excellent way to avoid wasting money and making a poor choice of carrier that turns out not to be comfortable. The library has something to suit everyone’s needs and body shape: Stretchy slings and Caboos are most suited to newborns who love to be held in snuggly and hear your heartbeat whilst they sleep, and are perfect for holding a colicky or refluxy baby upright after a feed. They are a game changer for mums who need to keep a toddler happy and don’t want to feel like they are abandoning their newborn, and they are a pretty fail-safe method of settling a baby to sleep! Soft buckle carriers are suitable from 3-4 months upwards; perfect for school runs when you don’t want to heave the buggy in and out of the car, or to provide comfort for a poorly child who just wants to be held or for taking on family walks with a toddler who inevitably gets tired legs.

New Sensory Treats at Gymnastics Factory A FEAST of new sensory delights await little ones at Gymnastics Factory. Lights, textured fabrics, treasure boxes and activity walls are some exciting additions to its baby and toddler gym. Classes give children the freedom to develop and learn about the world around them through physical play. The Guildford gym is packed with specialist equipment plus heaps of soft play shapes. Adding the sensory aspects promotes cognitive development and is a great way to encourage movement, from tummy time and rolling to crawling and toddling and beyond. Songs, bubbles and parachute games add to the fun. Classes offer a safe, fun environment where baby and parent can learn, play and bond. Gymnastics Factory offers gymnastics for all from babies to adults, plus baby massage. The Coffee shop has a wide range of drinks and snacks to enjoy after classes. Call for a free trial 01483 455060. Visit www.gymnasticsfactory.co.uk.

Full Day Care Expansion at Sythwood Nursery Sythwood Primary School is about to extend its current provision for children aged 2 to 5. Currently the school offer part time nursery sessions for pre-school children and limited sessions for children who are 2. The popularity of these sessions has led to this expansion.

The library also holds a selection of ring slings, woven wraps, Asian style carriers and kangaroo care clothing.

A brand new purpose built space will open after February half term. The Children’s Centre Manager, Kathryn Blackburn says “this exciting new space will enable us to offer full day care not just for our 3 and 4 year olds but also for the 2 year olds”.

Please visit the website for details of Guildford Sling Library sessions www.nurturingmotherhood.co.uk/ guildford-sling-library or call Janine on 07597 268494 - I‘d love to help you find your perfect carrier!

Sythwood are now taking bookings and have places available for children aged 2 to 5, they are open from 7.45 until 6pm. Parents can take their 15 hours free entitlement between these hours and can also book and pay for additional hours as required. Please call 01483 770063 for further information and ask to speak to the Nursery Manager.

Parenting

Take it Outside O

By Jon Millington of Wild Learning

nce upon a time, when I was a child - and probably when you were too - we took it for granted that once our parents thought we were old enough and confident enough to manage we would play outside by ourselves or with our friends. We would frequently leave the house after breakfast with no more parental notice than a kiss on the cheek and an instruction to ‘be back by…’. It was understood that we would range through the neighbourhood freely, and find our way back home once we were tired or hungry (usually both). If this sounds like a fairy story today then that’s not just because I started with ‘Once upon a time’. For most children in the UK today, there has been a huge decrease over the past thirty years in access to outdoor areas near their homes. I don’t just mean woods and fields (though I do also mean woods and fields) but also streets and urban areas. One survey concluded that since 1980, the range that adults consider children should be permitted to navigate unsupervised has decreased by 70%. Today, just 21% of children regularly play outside, compared with 71% of their parents. Increasingly children’s independent mobility is restricted by traffic and parental fear, which in turn leads them to spend much of their time indoors or at organised activities. The lack of opportunity to play out and range has a huge impact on children’s health and wellbeing – both mentally and physically – and on their resourcefulness and resilience. The National Trust’s Natural Childhood Report, reported that:

»» On average, Britain’s children watch more

than 17 hours of television a week: that’s almost two-and-a-half hours per day, every single day of the year.

»» British children also spend more than 20 hours a week online.

»» Around three in ten children in England aged between two and 15 are either overweight or obese.

»» One in ten children aged between five and

16 have a clinically diagnosed mental health disorder.

Wild Play

Or wish to develop an extraordinary lifestyle, I would love to hear from you! Please call Yvette Laister on 07884 378915.

However, there is something we can all do. It’s not complicated, doesn’t require much, or even any, equipment, and doesn’t need to cost any money at all. Research into children’s lifestyles consistently and overwhelmingly shows that being outdoors, especially in wild places, and being allowed to play at least partly unsupervised, vastly improves children’s well being, allowing them to learn about themselves and their relationship with the world around them. Outdoor play helps children manage risk, interact with other people and develops strength and health. They also, and this is the most important part, have huge amounts of fun. If you want to get started with Wild Play, it’s hello easy and free. At first you may want to stay with your children, but try not to get too involved with your child's play - let them decide what to do and how to play, that’s crucial. Invite a few local children and their parents to join you when you feel confident, and let them play in the garden while you're in the house. If they can play between neighbouring gardens that’s even better, but remember that your job is to supply snacks and drinks, and to keep out of the way! It's a good idea to set boundaries of where they can and cannot go and remind them of road safety. Leave your door ajar so that you can hear them and check on them from time to time, but don’t interfere! Farther afield, why not go on a walk to explore your local area – fields and woods are natural places to wild play. You may have woods or green spaces nearby that you don’t know about, so go an adventure as a family and see what you can find. When you’re there you can try den building, wild hide and seek, or animal spotting, and chances are your children will spot lots of places they’ll want to revisit later without you, so don’t forget to take some time out and let them play by themselves – they are the experts after all.

Be Ready for World Book Day!

24806 Longacre School Advert 87x130mm.indd 1

By Liz Walker

World Book Day 2016 is on Thursday 3 March. It is a day to celebrate books and get children enthused about reading. It is now in its 18th year and is celebrated in over 100 different countries, with the aim of encouraging children to read more. Children who read for pleasure are much more likely to be successful in all areas of their education than those who don’t. World Book Day could be the inspiration that your child needs to read the one great book that leads him or her to a lifetime of reading for pleasure. So why not embrace World Book Day 2016 and make the most of all its events including dressing up! Many schools ask children to dress up as a book character on World Book Day. Use the opportunity to read and talk more about books and stories with your children for the weeks leading up to 3 March. Discuss your favourite books and characters from your own childhood.
