News & Views Invisible Goodness Wrapped Up In Fun Perform founder, Lucy Quick tells us more. Perform classes are a bit like a pasta sauce that’s filled with hidden vegetables: kids think it’s really tasty and don’t realise that it’s full of healthy nutrition. I see our classes like this - invisible goodness wrapped up in an hour of games, role-play, dance routines and songs. The children think they’re enjoying an hour of fun but they’re also being equipped with essential confidence-building social skills. We all want our children to be happy, feel confident enough to try new things and interact well with others. Taking part in regular drama activities encourages confident and fluent speaking, boosts reading and writing abilities and enhances coordination and spatial awareness. Rescuing a mermaid from a pirate ship might seem like just imaginative improvisation for 6 year olds, but it’s teaching problem-solving and teamwork too. £40 intro Early discount drama, quote dance and SUW300420 singing lessons changed my life and helped shape my vision for Perform - to deliver classes with a specific focus on developing a child’s confidence and social skills - not to create just another drama school. Try a FREE no-obligation drama class in Farnham, Frimley, Godalming, Guildford, Haslemere or Woking. Visit www.perform.org.uk/try to book.

The Wednesday group, again from 4.20-5.20pm is for parent and child together. It is a mindful group to help bonding. You and your child will undertake an activity together, such as art or sensory therapy. Both groups are free and you don’t need to be referred, please call 01483 894858 for more information or to let them know you would like to attend. The groups are run by Arun Court, which is an independent specialist mental health recovery school in Bramley. The school has now been established for two terms, and ‘student development’ was rated Outstanding in their recent OFSTED report. The school is for EHCP funded students aged 11-17 who have a mental health need as their immediate priority - this could be anxiety, PTSD, OCD, eating disorder, self-esteem disorder or depression, amongst others. The child usually attends for one to two years with the initial focus on getting the child well, followed by a time where education becomes the main focus so that they can then return to mainstream school. The staff to child ratio is fantastic, and with a maximum of 20 pupils it feels more like a home than a school - just what many children need. If you think your child could benefit from Arun Court, talk to your caseworker. We are very luck to have a facility like this in our local area, so spread the word so those that need it know about it.

‘Just as long as they are happy’ By Rachel Churchley, St Catherine’s Prep School What can we do to help?

J ‘

ust as long as they are happy’ Parents who add to expectations of their children with this common phrase have the right idea. Happiness and wellbeing have long indicated and preceded quality learning and achievement. Positive self-identity and secure relationships help to set the scene for strong engagement and increased resilience, while smiles and laughter make a piece of learning intensely more memorable. A happier person is a more successful person and whilst research shows happier people live longer, even more importantly, happiness can be directly taught. We can all be happier with just a few simple strategies, as charities such as Action for Happiness promote. The new decade has brought with it a wider awareness of the need to prioritise mental health as much as physical health. Wellbeing, selfcare, positive relationships and happiness are all creeping into school curriculums, due to an increasing need to support young people. As mental health issues continue to rise and pressures on young people increase, we all want to do our best to support children in navigating the challenges of the modern world. If we have ever worried about how to tackle seemingly overwhelming topics such as social media, it may be surprising to find answers in naturally simple, small

activities and moments of interaction in a young person’s daily routine. Moments we can all take part in and benefit from together. Building positive boundaries around daily interactions now, will foster the grounded self-image and confidence needed to navigate issues independently later in life. The attention we hold, the space we give for a child to be heard and the role modelling of our own happiness is most powerful, as children will not often do what we say, but they will often do what we do. As a primary teacher, I regularly ask my class for emotional feedback. On a recent termly question sheet, one 8-year-old girl surprised me by responding to ‘what help would you like in school?’ with ‘half an hour’s quiet time’. I’m only too aware of how busy children are, moving from lesson to lesson with timed and measured tasks, running clubs and matches in breaks and after school, practising daily reading, times tables, musical instruments, sports or dance while squeezing in homework, a play date or Saturday school. With many children filling every spare moment with stimulus, finding time just to ‘be’ and sitting comfortably with themselves, seems to be increasingly difficult. Seeking quiet spaces or time for stillness is rarely considered child friendly, yet many of our children seem to crave just this.

Mindfulness can increase happiness, so encourage children to start the day by focusing on wiggling toes and fingers, stretching thoughtfully and looking for three things they like in their bedroom before getting out of bed. Other ideas include turning the school walk into a sensory walk or eating breakfast slowly and asking your child to tidy away carefully afterwards. These moments of attention can bring better focus for the school day and a greater sense of wellbeing. On the flip side, in moments of anger, upset or stress, teaching children to pause and breath, ask for help, find a safe adult to talk to, get active or take their mind off it by doing something they enjoy or by helping someone else, are all excellent strategies to implement and reinforce. Research shows the strongest impacts on happiness come from keeping a gratitude diary each day and implementing random acts of kindness for others around us. Praising children for who they are rather than what they achieve is an important aspect to keep in mind and while we want them to know they can ‘do anything they desire by working hard’ it is important to make sure they are aware there is an element of luck to life and their self-worth is paramount, regardless of the outcome of their efforts. While this may all sound a lot to hold in mind, it is really about the simple moments. Quietly pausing between activities, rolemodelling healthy routines or focusing on things we enjoy. Maybe that violin practice could offer a chance to create a funny tune together, rather than striving for that perfect grade 2 performance. After all, don’t we all just want our children to be happy? Ten Great Educational Apps for Children

Schools & Education By Claire Winter

C

hildren learn in many different ways including outside of the classroom. This is where educational apps can come in very useful as the best of these engage even the most reluctant learner. As well as being fun ways to learn, educational apps also turn screen time into a positive experience, rather than something you are constantly arguing with your children about. Here are Families top ten educational apps that will keep any child ‘appy!’

1

Cursive Writing Wizard (£4.99) By L’Escapadou

Age 6-8. This version provides a UKfriendly cursive font, and is ideal for teaching young primary kids how to write. It’s based upon a tracing system and there are 50 plus animated stickers, sound effects and interactive games that animate letters at the end of the tracing. You can also print off writing PDFs for the kids to practice on and even import their current spelling list.

2

Safari Tales (£2.99) By Kuato Games

Age 6-8. Children can develop their storytelling skills with this beautiful and fun animal-themed app. Safari adventurers can explore the Savannah and learn interesting facts about the five baby animals. The game is so much fun they won’t even notice that they are boosting their reading and literacy skills at the same time.

3

Endless Wordplay (Free + In App Purchase) By Originator Inc.

All ages. This app focuses on learning simple spelling patterns while reinforcing letter names and sounds. Each stage is a different rhyme, with the user spelling three words from the same word family. Once you complete all three words, you are taken to a sentence screen with a silly sentence and cute animation that will encourage and delight the player. It’s free to download but to play more than three levels you have to pay £4.99.

Easter Days Out Pick up a Stitch for Woking’s Easter Big Knit! This Easter, Woking Shopping is bridging the generation gap with FREE community knitting workshops for charity. Over recent weeks, Woking shopping has been working with a number of local care homes and community groups behind the scenes, where avid knitters are preparing a series of small knitted squares in preparation for the workshops. The workshops will run between 4th-10th April* in Central Square, Wolsey Place and anyone joining in will have the chance to make a bunny from one of the knitted squares. All bunnies will be donated to local children’s charities to spread a little happiness, or should we say, ‘hoppiness’, this Easter. It’s a great opportunity for the young and elderly to come together for a good knit and natter and create a cute Easter gift for someone less fortunate.
