Parental alienation, what is it and what can you do about it?
When parents separate they may be feeling a multitude of emotions, ranging from hurt, guilt, confusion, fear of the future and insecurity. Communication between parents and their children may be strained as well. Parents may have difficulty explaining to their children why they are separating and what the future holds for everyone involved, especially if both parents are unable to jointly talk to the children. Each parent will have their own narrative which can often differ or conflict with the other.
The children themselves may be unable to talk to their parents about how they feel, especially to the parent who has left and who
they may blame for the breakdown of the family unit. Family therapy can often help families through these difficult times and promote a wider dialogue.
There are cases where one parent and their family is prevented from maintaining a close relationship with their children because of the alienating behaviour of the other parent. Being prevented from having a close relationship with one’s children can
be a devastating and traumatic experience. If parental alienation is unchallenged, it can result in a complete breakdown of relationship with the children and ultimately results in the severance of the close bond previously enjoyed.
