New Support for 11+ Exams

Are you considering 11+ exams for independent schools? There are two local programmes offering preparation and support. If your child is currently in year 5, they can join the 11+ foundation group immediately (subject to space). The main focus of this group is on verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning though elements of maths and English are also covered. Then there is also the 11+ preparation programme for children currently in Year 4. It offers variety and sustainability through to exams in Nov 2025 – Jan 2026 with a holistic approach. It comprises of a package of 1:1 sessions, group sessions, bespoke set work with feedback and parent consultations. It offers varied preparation in line with the individual child’s circumstances and abilities. Both programmes are run by Lucie Paulson, whose aim is to encourage families to enjoy reading, writing and learning at home. You can find out more at www.readingsupportathome or email Lucie on readingsupprtathome@icloud.com.

The Alps may be an obvious destination for the ski season, but how about a summer visit? Summer offers enough green (the mountains) and blue (the sky) to set you up for the whole year - and plenty of fresh air to fill your families’ lungs.

With the main chalet - Au Coin du Feu - plus two chalets next door, you can organise your own meals, or join the party at ‘Au Coin du Feu’ for dinners that you usually only dream of. Family friendly early evening meals for the children and a daytime crèche for little ones not quite as active as you, with drinks in the bar for the grown ups – or in the Jacuzzi on the terrace. odcasts have become a huge part of many people’s lives, offering a wide range of interesting, informative and entertaining audio which can be listened to for free at a time that suits them.

This applies to children too, with many high standard podcasts available that parents will also enjoy sharing. Podcasts are a brilliant way for kids to absorb information and can be played in the car, before bed to wind down or while doing colouring.

Story Pirates

Ages 5+

Stories written by children are given some polish but not too much, so they can be brought to life by adult actors, comics and musicians. Performers such as Clare Danes and Julie Andrews totally commit to the kids’ ideas which are often ‘off the wall’ such as The Squirrel Astronaut. www.storypirates.com

Rebel Girls Ages 5+

An offshoot of the best-selling book of the same name, this podcast is all about championing clever and tenacious women from across all areas, including the arts, civil rights and sport. Each episode is about twenty minutes long and focuses on one extraordinary woman. Each is delivered by another extraordinary woman. Despite the gendered title, these are stories for everyone. www.rebelgirls.com/podcast

Wow in the World Ages 5-12

A goofball, award-winning science podcast that tackles serious scientific enquiries and makes learning fun, even for parents. Hosted by Mindy, a klutz with a time machine, Guy and an everexpanding cast of wacky characters, the podcast shares stories about the latest news in science, technology and innovation. Stories that give kids hope and will make them say ‘WOW!’ www.bit.ly/WowInTheWorld

History Storytime for Kids Ages 5-11

Sophie (age 7) and Ellie (age 5) and their daddy tell the stories and use lots of funny sound effects. Hear amazing stories of animals in history, stirring historical stories of love and betrayal and stories of strong women and how they changed the course of events. www.historystorytime.com

What if World Ages 5-12

Hosted by Mr Eric who uses silly voices and crazy characters to answer a new ‘What if’ question sent in by an inquisitive child every episode. The scenarios are typically fanciful: think ‘what if everyone wore the same colour?’ or ‘what if snow got on the moon?’. These are the kind of questions that inspire the quirky stories for this imaginative podcast. www.whatifworldpodcast.com

Activity Quest Ages 5-12

A weekly podcast packed with stuff to do. Join presenters from children’s radio station, Fun Kids, as they visit locations nationwide to find out what they offer. They've tried everything from archery to heritage railway rides, rockclimbing to museum visits - even feeding tigers! The podcast is filled with fun ways to spend your weekend. www.bit.ly/ActivityQuest

The Week Junior Show Ages 8-14

Each week, Bex from Fun Kids is joined by members of The Week Junior team to discuss their favourite stories, debate the week’s hot topic and discover whether the Real or Rubbish? report is fake news or the real deal. How has the cost of living crisis affected divorce maintenance payments?

The cost of living crisis continues to place many families’ finances under significant strain. This strain is often most keenly felt in the finances of separated families. Individuals who are required as part of their divorce settlement to pay spousal maintenance may be struggling to meet those obligations on top of rising bills and increased mortgage payments. Many spousal maintenance orders are also index linked which means that they should be varied on an annual basis in line with inflation. It is easy to see how any significant increase in monthly maintenance payments can easily become unaffordable if an individual’s salary has not risen at the same level.

If you find yourself in this situation what can you do?

First, try to see if you can agree a reduction or an uplift that is affordable for you in the longer term, directly with your former spouse. You will need to provide evidence of your income to prove that you have not received a pay increase in line with inflation and you should also provide full information relating to your monthly expenditure to show that the currents payments and any annual increase is unaffordable. It is important that you do not stop any existing payments otherwise you could find yourself in breach of the court order and steps may be taken to enforce the order. It is best if you continue paying what you can, rather than stopping the payments altogether. If you are able to reach agreement with your former spouse, this should be recorded in an order and sent to the court to be approved. A family solicitor can help you with this.

What if agreement is hard to reach?

If the thought of direct conversations with your former spouse seems impossible then you might want to consider some alternatives, such as using the mediation process.

Mediation is a voluntary process where you will be assisted by an impartial mediator who will try to promote dialogue and help you and your former spouse reach agreement. Alternatively, your family solicitor might be able to help you reach an agreement using the collaborative process. This is where you and your former spouse, together with your respective solicitors, will meet and discuss matters round the table, exploring solutions together.

Can you apply to the court?

If this is unsuccessful, the next step to consider is making an application to the court to vary the maintenance payments downwards. An order can be varied if there has been a significant change in circumstances since the making of the original order. The court is unlikely to order the paying party to pay maintenance at a level that they cannot afford and the court will consider all the circumstances of the case. The court can order the payments to be reduced, stopped or order the payment of a lump sum. Another option to consider is

arbitration where both parties choose an arbitrator to make a decision, this can be quicker and more cost effective than court proceedings. The outcome of court applications can be uncertain and costs are likely to outweigh the benefits. It is important to take early legal advice so you know what information you need to present and how these applications are dealt with.
