An exciting opportunity to get involved in a children's opera–free of charge!
KIDS GO WILD! #lionopera could be coming to a primary school near you! Combining music, performance and wildlife conservation, this innovative new children’s opera is an exciting opportunity for Key Stage 2 students. Leading British composer James Olsen has joined forces with animal charities Born Free, The Donkey Sanctuary and LionAid to present the second instalment of his children’s #lionopera – ‘One of Our Lions is Missing!’ Primary schools up and down the country can signup free of charge to stage their own production this summer, with a range of digital support resources provided. ‘Born Free’s heritage with lions goes back over 50 years,’ said co-founder of the Born Free Foundation, Virginia McKenna, ‘and it is vital that our message of Compassionate Conservation is brought to each new generation. James’s genius has created #lionopera, an exciting, powerful and engaging musical opportunity.’ To find out more or to get your school involved, go to http://olsenverlag.com/lionopera
‘CREATE’ BREAKS DOWN BARRIERS Award-winning arts charity Create is delivering More Creative, a creative arts programme bringing adults with learning difficulties and primary school children together. The programme offers a chance for people with and without disabilities to collaborate on creative projects, breaking down barriers and developing shared understanding using creative arts to promote community cohesion. ‘The inclusive nature of More Creative is enabling both schoolchildren and adults with disabilities to develop new skills and shared understanding,’ said Create’s Co-Founder, Nicky Goulder. ‘I can’t wait to see friendships blossom and creativity flourish, and I’m excited to see their sculpture on permanent display in Southwark Park.’ www.createarts.org.uk
NEW DADS MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS New research reveals that almost 40% of men experience anxieties after having children. The research released by the Priory Group of Harley Street, London also claims to show that thousands of men experience anxiety—and in some cases depression—as they enter fatherhood. One in five men believed they were actually suffering from Paternal Post Natal Depression, although only 2% were officially diagnosed. This accords with earlier research by the parenting charity the NCT, which showed around 1 in 3 new fathers are concerned about their mental health. The increased pressures of fatherhood, more financial responsibility, changes in relationships and lifestyle, combined with a lack of sleep and an increased workload at home, may all affect a new dad’s mental wellbeing. Concern about their partner is another worry for new fathers. The NCT found that almost three quarters (73%) of dads were worried about their partner’s mental health. SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR LIE-INS Unfortunately for our lie-ins, children are led by our actions, so if we want our children to go out and play outdoors, we need to go to! Outdoor sport is about more than physical exercise, it builds their immune system, improves their attention span and encourages teamwork, so that means you need to be on the sidelines all year round!
A wise man once said “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing”, so wrap your kids up, shove a hot water bottle down your jumper and get outside! Try Time Kids Rugby offer individual or small group coaching sessions, as well as school holiday rugby camps for players aged between 6-18 years. There is a strong emphasis on fun but also on personal development on and off the field. www.trytimerugby.com

HELP REQUIRED TO SET UP A COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY Families’ favourite First Hand Experiences are hoping to become a Community Interest Company—a social enterprise that channels its profits and assets for the public good, which means that when your child goes on one of their camps or clubs you will also be helping other children access their unique programme of activities who might not otherwise be able—what a great idea! This spring they are launching a dynamic crowdfunding campaign designed to raise funds for their sleep away camp facilities and awareness of what they are about, so if you have experience in working in marketing/PR/ funding or think you can contribute with your skills and bags of enthusiasm then do get in touch. They are offering pro bono pay such as free camps for your children in exchange for at least a day a week of your time from now to mid May. With the camp season coming up this could be a good opportunity for those with some time to get free childcare and contribute to a wonderful innovative and rewarding campaign! Find out more at www.firsthandexperiences.co.uk or call 01843 652833.

TECHNOLOGY: GOOD FOR LEARNING, BUT IS IT HEALTHY? Recent research indicates that a staggering 96% of teachers believe technology has had a positive impact on the way children participate and learn in a lesson, whilst 56% believe that pupils are more engaged when technology is used, according to a survey conducted by Smoothwall.com, a web filtering provider for schools. An impressive 86% of teachers also say that technology has made them perform better and prepare more varied and exciting lessons. And parents are on board too. A survey conducted by TheKnowledgeAcademy.com shows that 91% of parents believe technology is making it easier for them to be involved with their child’s education and 68% say that technology has increased their ability to help children with school work. However, there are some concerns. At least a third of teachers are worried about using technology in class because they cannot control what each child is doing whilst it is being used. A similar number of parents also think that children already have too much access to technology and don’t need it at school. Curious about whether sleeping with their phones next to their heads was having an adverse effect on their ability to concentrate, a group of secondary school students devised an experiment to investigate the impact of wi-fi radiation on living cells. The experiment entailed placing one set of six trays of cress seeds in each of two rooms. The temperature in both rooms was kept constant, and all the trays received the same amount of water and access to sunlight throughout the experiment. But in one room the trays were placed next to two wi-fi routers. The wi-fi router emits the same type of radiation as mobile phones, allowing the students to recreate the impact of sleeping with your phone near your head. After 12 days, the cress seeds in the room without wi-fi were flourishing, whereas the seeds in the room with the router showed no real growth. The results from the students’ experiment are similar to the findings by King’s College London and Cardiff University that suggested having a device even when switched off in a child’s bedroom can cause sleep disruption. A good solution is to ban mobiles in bedroom, and to turn off routers at night; you could also fit a R2L to the back of your child’s phone, to help protect against the long-term effects of radiation (not tested by us). www.screen2bsafe.com

EDUCATION
Teach your child to love reading alone By Justine Crow
We all have that exquisite oft-repeated childhood memory, don't we? Nose in a book, legs dangling, miles from those meddling adults—metaphorically at any rate... So why is it so impossible for our own children to achieve literary independence; that feeling of wanting neither the chapter nor the afternoon to end? Instead, when your child proclaims that they are bored and you suggest they read a book, their sceptical facial expression says it all. But it is hardly surprising that there's a difference in our experience—we grew up without mobile phones, tablets, Xboxes, YouTube, or the lure of Minecraft. It was even customary then to have the telly rationed. Now, it would be a miracle if they could concentrate long enough to watch a whole CBBC programme undisturbed. Here are my top ten tips for ensuring the book is as much of a distraction as its digital competition. 1. Start them young Board books, cloth books, lift the tab. Show them how it works and then let them do it themselves. Don't be precious. Let them bite and chew and tear. Keep the delicate pop-ups out of reach. 2. Encourage growing babes to turn the pages themselves Not only will they get an idea of how a book functions very quickly, it will also help develop the fine motor skills that are essential for learning. 3. When choosing books for toddlers, consider their complexity Hardbacks are desirable but they are heavy for little hands. With siblings around, especially newborns, have a box of books the first child can escape to. Tell them it is theirs and nobody else's. They can choose to share with the new baby or enjoy by themselves. 4. When they are tiddlers, keep tablets and phones solely for games—preferably educational ones Small children need the magic of a physical book to encourage their love of reading. As they grow older, ereaders have their place, such as on long journeys but don't forget, not only do children spend a lot of leisure time online, their schools increasingly use technology in the classroom. For them, screens are the norm, not a refuge. 5. The switch from picture books to chapters is an exciting rite of passage Now that they can actually read words, celebrate by going to the library or bookshop and allowing them to choose stories to try. It's
okay for them to discover they don't like something they've picked out— they will find their preference in time. Don't put them off 'big' books— most modern kids manage to get through the Harry Potters without a problem. The arcane language of many children's classics is tough to make sense of, even for a seasoned adult reader, but let them have a go. 6. Get them to make a bookmark and feel proud of how many pages they clock up without interruption. 7. Tintin is the perfect type of leave-alone-reading Just because graphic novels are illustrated doesn't mean they lack in quality; just listen to the giggles when they get an Asterix book to themselves. Many favourite authors are available in accessible comic book form, especially the classics. Short story anthologies are less daunting and juicy fact books are often hard to put down. 8. Lead by example if your child sees you gaining pleasure from the simple act of finding a corner and a book to retreat with, even for a mere five minutes, they will follow. Inevitably into the same corner as you! 9. Don't push them to read at bedtime when eyes and minds may be tired Offer to finish a chapter aloud for them instead. It will keep them wanting more. And if they turn the light back on after you've closed the door to continue the adventure, is it really such a crime? 10. Don't force them, ever Reverse psychology is a wonderful device.
Keep screens for the mundane, for emergencies and homework. It is pretty hard to 'love' an e-reader, to 'treasure' a download—and how can a beloved library be built out of something that cannot be 'seen?' As an adult, there is nothing quite like the sheer heavenliness of being left in private with something thrilling and absorbing. Get it right and they'll long for that sensation all their lives. However, nagging your offspring to read will have the opposite effect—this is one of the proven laws of parenting, after all. Now do you mind, I've got a chapter to finish… Justine Crow is the author of The Little Book of Nits published by Bloomsbury. Five early signs of autism Touch typing and SEN Early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder can mean parents don’t have to wait for their child to start school to implement intervention programmes. Early autism intervention programmes can address the primary behavioural symptoms of autism in children from as young as 18 months of age and can have long term positive effects.
In a world where online activity is dominating the way we communicate, computers, laptops and tablets are fast becoming an essential item for everyone. Being able to touch type is therefore an invaluable skill—as important as learning to drive or cook a basic meal. A skill that once learnt will be appreciated forever.
Many children with autism appear to be developing typically until they start pre-school or kindergarten, when language and social delays stand out in contrast to the development of their peers.
A touch typer is not reliant on looking at the keyboard, so focus is not wasted on finding the keys. Being able to type as fast as you can think means that ideas flow more readily, so you are immediately more productive, detailed and expressive in your written work.
These five signs of autism can be observed in children as young as 12 to 24 months of age. Your child does not look when you point at something. A child with autism may not look when you point at an object across the room and may not follow your gaze when you look at something. Your child does not point with one finger to request items or get help. A child with autism may not use gestures like pointing with one finger to ask for things or to direct your attention. Your child does not respond to his or her name. Children with autism may not understand the response you expect when you say their name, or they may not be motivated to respond in the same way as a typically developing child.
Touch typing is a necessity for some children Most significantly, recent research into learning difficulties like dyslexia or dyspraxia has concluded that touch typing is not only a huge benefit for those with SEN, but in some cases is considered to be a necessity. Not only is it a relief for children who struggle with handwriting, but it also helps with spelling, as word patterns are learnt using muscle memory. Intelligent children, who were once falling behind in class, due to having difficulty translating the thoughts in their head onto paper, feel liberated. Their self confidence is boosted, as is the quality of their written work. And the results speak for themselves. Naomi Martin Touch Typing teaches children how to touch type in one week and to make it fun as well! For more information go to www.nmtouchtyping.co.uk
Your child avoids looking you in the eye. A child with autism may find eye contact challenging or painful and may avoid looking you in the eye when you are talking to, playing with, or dressing him or her. Your child ignores you or does not seem to understand directions. A child with autism may have trouble understanding spoken language. If you have concerns about your child, contact your GP or healthcare provider today. For more information on early intervention visit www.autism.org.uk or www.gemiini.org, which is a web based learning programme offering online video modeling to parents without a formal diagnosis or access to regular services.

For many parents, their child’s first swimming lessons are among their most precious memories: memories you capture beautifully with spectacular photos you'll treasure forever. Swimming is also the perfect exercise for little ones, since water allows muscles to move freely, supported by its buoyancy. Lo Winchurch of Water Babies South West London told Families South West: “We’ve got the best baby swimming teachers in the world: only Water Babies teachers can obtain a national diploma in baby swimming. Trained to tune in very carefully to the needs of both you and your baby, they work hard to ensure you both feel safe and happy.
One of our core philosophies is that we’re teaching you to teach your baby to swim, so we’ll always explain why we’re doing something, as well as carefully demonstrate exactly what to do. Together, we’ll teach your child to feel safe and confident both above and below the water. And to help chart your little one’s swimming adventures you’ll receive a special keepsake book with exclusive stickers and badges to collect along the way.” Water Babies runs multi-award baby swimming classes from birth across Central and South West London.

The only UK charity providing specialist paediatric osteopathy on a donate-what-youcan basis
GENTLE PAEDIATRIC OSTEOPATHY Choosing the right healthcare for your child can feel challenging. If you’re after a gentle, non-pharmaceutical approach then try the Osteopathic Centre for Children (OCC). Their highly-trained osteopaths will give you the time you need to discuss your concerns, and after observing your child, will use effective, non-invasive physical techniques to help promote, maintain and restore health and wellbeing. They specialise in treating children from birth to 18 years presenting with a whole range of conditions, as well as women in the perinatal period, and will always work alongside traditional medicine where appropriate. OCC parent, Georgia said, ‘What I like about the consultants at the OCC is that they don’t give me a hard time if we do decide to go down the [NHS drug-treatment] route but support my family in what we do next. Having seen the effect of the osteopathic treatment on my family, the OCC will always be my first port of call for my children’s health. We think it is absolutely brilliant.’

New Health Visitor Service in Wandsworth Despite huge cuts in Government funding, Richmond and Wandsworth councils have recently successfully launched a new Health Visitor Service so they can better support local parents. The service will stretch across both boroughs and will help all pregnant women, parents and carers with children aged up to five. The service will also provide support and advice in order to promote good health, to detect issues early, prevent accidents and ensure immunisation. A great idea, it seems. Services offered by the new Health Visitor Service will include a named health visitor for all families with children aged 0-5, plus weight and wellbeing clinics, parenting support, breastfeeding clinics and support groups, baby and child developmental assessments and antenatal and postnatal groups. These services will all be supported by home visits. On top of this, a dedicated ‘Health Matters’ website will be set up where families can post questions and receive answers within 2 working days. “The health and wellbeing of our families is vital,” said Cllr Paul Ellis, Wandsworth's cabinet member for adult care and health, “and this new integrated service means we can offer the best possible support for our children, parents and carers.” “As a parent, I know how vital the health visitor service is—providing family services from pre-birth, right through to school,” added Cllr Mark Boyle, Richmond Council cabinet member for public health. “Despite huge reductions in Government funding, particularly for public health grants, we
have been able to protect this valued and much needed provision. This new service will provide a number of different ways in which people can contact their health visitor and a single point of access for all queries.” Janet Lewis, divisional director of children’s services at CLCH said: “We’re delighted to be working alongside Richmond and Wandsworth councils to support families across both boroughs through this vital service.” Residents can access the service via online digital hub https://healthmatters.clch.nhs.uk/
Group-singing reduces symptoms of Post-Natal Depression Ruth Routledge founded Pram Chorus, a parent’s choir where you can bring babies/toddlers, six years ago. She wasn’t at all surprised to find that what she has been hearing anecdotally from her members has now been demonstrated in new research published in the British Journal of Psychiatry. Ruth, a choir-director, founded Pram Chorus after the birth of her daughter, whilst struggling herself with issues of depression, loneliness and the identity crisis which often accompanies the experience of becoming a parent. As well as having an amazingly positive effect for her, she is often told by members how much the choirs improve their mental health, with it being described as “my saviour” and “the one activity which kept me going through the week”. So new research demonstrating this is great news. For the research project, women experiencing PND were split into three groups. One did group-singing, the other did creative play and the third had their usual treatment of talking therapies, medication and mindfulness. The results were remarkable, with the women in the singing group experiencing a far quicker reduction in their symptoms. The significance of this cannot be understated. Many women wait months for treatment on the NHS, during which their symptoms can worsen, having a negative impact on their baby, and compounding feelings of guilt and shame in the mother. Finding a quick, effective, drug-free treatment (particularly important for breastfeeding mothers) is wonderful news for women and their families.
Pram Chorus on prescription anyone? So what now? Are doctors prescribing “choir-therapy”? Ruth from Pram Chorus would love to see this happening, but in the meantime, encourages anyone suffering from PND or who is feeling lonely, isolated or down, to join one of her singing-groups in South London (Streatham, Brixton, Balham and Tooting). They are friendly, inclusive, non-auditioned groups who sing a wide variety of songs. Franchises are also available for people to set up their own Pram Chorus group closer to home. It can feel scary, but it is worth trying a choir to sing away the baby-blues! www.pramchorus.com ruth@pramchorus.com
