Pupdate Happy Birthday Eddie! Our four legged, furry family member recently had his first birthday. To celebrate, we took homemade, heart-shaped dog biscuits to share with his friends at puppy class, which went down a treat. We also enjoyed a day out at Dogs Trust Kenilworth’s Fun Day and Dog Show at Hatton. Eddie had a whale of a time with so many people and dogs to meet, and so many smells to sniff! We entered him in the puppy class and proudly walked him around the ring, Eddie modelling his birthday present, a new collar and lead. Much to the delight of my daughter, Eddie won a rosette. Photographer Larrie Barlow (www.laadaisy.wixsite.com/laaphoto) had set up a mini studio in a marquee and was taking pet portraits with all proceeds going to Dog’s Trust. It was the ideal way to mark Eddie’s fantastic first year – many happy returns! Claire Jones, Editor

Introducing the front cover photographer Hello! I’m Lisa from Little Beanies Photography. I’m a documentary photographer specialising in Bumps, Newborns, Babies and Families, and I love to work with natural light. There is very little posing which means you’ll be more relaxed whilst I snap away in your own environment either at home or on location. I’m originally a Yorkshire girl, a wife to Will and a very proud mummy of two gorgeous boys (one is featured on the front cover!). They are my absolute world. I’ve been taking pictures of babies and families for years but when my boys arrived I really understood how important it was to capture the pure innocence of them and their general day-to-day lives. They grow up far too quickly and I don’t want to miss a second! Being a mum of two boys has also provided me with skills to really understand how to be with children and bring out the best in them. I have lots of tricks up my sleeve and there’s never a dull moment at one of my shoots. I would love to help you keep those moments as real as possible through pictures, so you can treasure them forever for years to come. If you are interested in one of my sessions visit www.littlebeanies.co.uk. Follow me on Facebook and Instagram and keep up to date with my latest work. I would love to hear from you.

For separated parents, the approaching summer break sometimes triggers the dread of disagreements with their ex about when and where the children will spend their time. These simple tips provided by family lawer Alison Ratchford of Woolley & Co, Solicitors could help avoid disagreements and upset: • • •
•
•
Be organised and plan ahead. Work through the dates and consider well in advance which days/weeks you would like to have the children. Last minute requests or demands often cause stress and difficulty. Discuss don’t dictate. Remember that you are still co-parenting. Everyone has work and family commitments, so a little empathy goes a long way. Agree plans before booking anything. Communicate. Provide full emergency contact details when on holiday to alleviate fears and concerns about a child’s whereabouts and safety. It is also important that children be allowed to contact the other parent when away for extended periods. Put your children first. You may have to be flexible and compromise on some plans but remember, it is always in your children’s best interests if they can see their parents working together and agreeing arrangements. Don’t be difficult if your ex wants to take the children away, your children are going to get a holiday. Remember, children have around 12 weeks holiday a year. The sooner you can work out arrangements with the other parent, the better it will be for everyone, and the better holiday season you will have.

Education
Seize the summer with Explore Learning! At Explore Learning we are encouraging families to seize the summer! To help you do this we have put together a jam-packed summer programme with creative ideas on how to keep your child’s brain active over the holidays, so they are ready to settle back into the new school year confidently!
Start a blog
Learn some new skills, as a family, by creating a blog together. Give your child a little note book to jots ideas down whilst you are out and about, then write up what you’ve done. Take lots of pictures as these are a great tool to help children who find writing tricky. Encourage them to describe what is happening in the picture to get their creativity flowing.
Have a movie night
Research carried out by Explore Learning highlighted watching TV/films is the number one thing children wanted to do over the summer. Use this to motivate your child to read. Find a book that has been made into a film that your child wants to watch. Then plan a movie night far enough in advance so you can read the book together before enjoying the film.
Send a postcard
Let your friends and family know what you’ve been up to with a postcard. They’re only short so are a wonderful way to get a bit of writing going during the holidays. If your child is reluctant to write, then why not try a postcard app like By Post? They can take their own pictures to make into postcards and type their message.
Read, read and read some more
The Summer Reading Challenge 2017 The annual Summer Reading Challenge to children is simple. During the holidays they are encouraged to read six or more books of their choice - fact books, joke books, picture books or audio books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library. There are collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate for every child who completes the Challenge, which is run by independent charity The Reading Agency. Children can sign up at their local library from the end of June onwards and all materials are absolutely free. This year's theme is Animal Agents, introducing young readers to a variety of clever creatures, specially trained to use their skills and natural instincts to unravel mysteries. Animal Agents is illustrated by Tony Ross, illustrator of the hugely popular Horrid Henry series. He is published all over the world; his awards and nominations include the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, Kate Greenaway Medal, and the Smarties Prize. The Challenge is open to all primary school children and is designed for all reading abilities. Schools work with local libraries and give out information to encourage children to take part, and most libraries run a Summer Reading Challenge linked early years activity for pre-schoolers. Why not head to your local library during the summer holidays and enrol. It's completely free and any child can take part.
A study by OUP showed that just 10 mins of shared reading a day can have a huge impact on children’s progress. Pop a book in your bag so you can use any opportunity to get your daily 10 mins in. We will be uploading weekly activities that you can complete with your child to help keep them engaged with what they are reading. Visit explorelearning.co.uk/summer to find out more and download your first activity!
Play some games
There are bound to be some rainy days this summer, so use this as a chance to get out some board games. These are great for so many reasons, from developing language to improving memory skills. Needs some new games? Have a scavenger hunt in local charity shops to see who in the family can find the best game.
Tuition
To keep your children progressing over the summer, a tuition centre is a great option. Prevent the battle ground of getting children to do work at home and get them along to a centre where there are lots of other children getting involved. Explore Learning runs maths and English sessions as well as a whole range of interactive workshops throughout the holidays to keep your child’s brain active. The best things is you can go along and try one of these for free, so get in touch today! Visit your nearest centre at Sainsburys, Leamington Spa www.explorelearning.co.uk

How Can 11 Plus Mocks Help Your Child Achieve 11 Plus Success? 1. Identify strengths and weaknesses at regular intervals. This information can be used to target preparation on areas that will make the most difference. 2. Improve examination techniques. For a child to succeed in the 11 Plus they must develop an ability to work effectively under examination conditions. 3. Familiarise your child with the format of the exam. The CEM style of 11 Plus exam is very different to the old style 11 Plus. Many children enter the exam without knowing what to expect. 4. Rank your child in comparison to other children preparing for the 11 Plus. It is important to see how your child is performing in comparison to a cross section of other children. Our examinations come with a detailed statistical feedback report including a placement for each subject area. Our Free Mock for Year 4 is on 10 September 2017. Year 5 Mock Exams start from £75. Education
An Independent Day School and Nursery for boys aged 3-7 and girls aged 3-11
Dogs could help children improve their reading skills Many studies have shown that improving a child’s reading skills will tend to lead to a greater overall academic success and better life chances. There have been numerous schemes and initiatives aimed at boosting both interest in and aptitudes for reading but one of the most novel involves bringing four-legged helpers into the classroom. The practice originated in the US in 1999 with the Reading Education Assistance Dogs (READ) scheme. It was slower to catch on in the UK but has gained traction recently, with the Kennel Club’s Bark and Read Foundation being at the forefront. According to the Kennel Club, reading to dogs has been proven to help children develop literacy skills and build confidence, through “both the calming effect the dogs' presence has on children and the fact that the dog will listen to the children read without being judgemental or critical”. Actress Zoe Wanamaker CBE, a supporter of the scheme, said: “That is why the Kennel Club's Bark & Read project is such an inspiring idea, as we all know that dogs are great listeners and won't judge if we stumble over a word.”

With over one million visits a year, it’s the liveliest arts centre in the Midlands. This summer from 24 July to 3 September, families can enjoy a host of events, courses and activities both inside and out throughout the six week holidays. Inside, children can enjoy one day courses including performance, digital media plus arts and crafts. In addition, mac Camps offer extended courses over 4-5 days enabling children to further develop their creative skills and include musical theatre, animation and dance. Young film buffs can also enjoy an increased selection of summer films in mac’s cinema. Outside in mac’s outdoor amphitheatre, families can enjoy circus, comedy, cinema and theatre performances. With the help of mac’s generous funders, the People’s Postcode Lottery, children and young people can experience a selection of £3.50 shows while enjoying the sunshine!
