Welcome
Happy New Year to all of our Families Vale of York readers! So, it’s that time again when we feel as if we have to make changes and turn over a new leaf in some way. But, do we really ever stick to our New Year’s resolutions? I don’t think that I do! I remember in my 20s, I used to write them down, typically in my treasured new diary, but from recollection, none of them were ever kept! So, this year, I am going to keep it simple. I’m going to make a New Year’s resolution that I know I will keep because I am already doing it, (that’s not cheating is it, surely?!). Not that long ago, I entered the Manchester Marathon, this will be my first ever marathon and a real challenge, after only ever running 1/2 marathons before. With two kids, a dog, work and all that family life brings, I am determined to stick to my training schedule (most weeks!) and to get over that finish line in April. I am also running for charity - Home Start York. They are a wonderful organisation, who help out local families who need support. If you would like to donate, then both Home Start York and I would like to say a huge thank you! You can donate online at: www.mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/lauramacaulay1 Happy family fun times in 2019!

Schools that Ban Mobile Phones Improve Results
Should children be allowed to take mobile phones to school? Opinion is divided. Some advocate a complete ban because of the potential for distraction, while others promote the use of phones as a teaching tool in the classroom. Schools in England and Scotland have complete autonomy regarding their mobile phone policy, which has resulted in large differences in the timing of the introduction of bans. Schools that ban pupils from carrying mobile phones show a sustained improvement in exam results, with the biggest advances coming from struggling students, according to research published by the London School of Economics. The large-scale study found schools in Birmingham, London, Leicester and Manchester that banned mobiles enjoyed a boost in the proportion of pupils getting five good passes at GCSE, compared with schools that allowed pupils to keep their phones, even if switched off. Hidden Condition Affects Maths Learning
The Big Garden Birdwatch The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch takes place from 26 to 28 January and is the largest wildlife survey in the world. The information collected helps monitor bird species in the UK, and is great fun for children. To take part, you need to watch the birds in your garden or local park for just one hour at some point over the three days and report your results to the RSPB.
Many children are suffering from an undiagnosed developmental condition which affects their ability to learn maths, according to a study from Queen’s University in Belfast. A team of experts carried out research on the prevalence of Specific Learning Disorder in mathematics (SLDM), which is also known as dyscalculia and affects up to 6% of people. A child with dyscalculia can have normal intelligence in every other way but struggle to do well in maths due a specific impairment in the brain.
To make it fun, challenge your children to see who can spot the most birds. Take a bike ride to a local park to look for birds, or make a day trip out of it and spot birds in a new place.
The researchers studied the mathematics performance of 2,421 primary school children over a number of school years. The study showed that, in almost all cases, children who appeared to have dyscalculia are not being diagnosed, meaning that, in the view of the researchers, children with persistent, serious difficulties with mathematics, unlike children with dyslexia, do not receive specialist support.

You can request a FREE Big Garden Birdwatch pack from the RSPB which includes a bird identification chart and advice to help you attract wildlife to your garden.

Harrogate Nursery Appoints New Manager
An ‘outstanding’ North Yorkshire nursery set in 20-acres of grounds on the outskirts of Harrogate has appointed a new manager. Carol Pedersen has joined Magic Tree Nursery, part of Harrogate prep school Belmont Grosvenor, from her most recent role of developing nurseries and pre-schools across Bahrain, Singapore and China. Mother-of-two Mrs Pedersen is excited about her new position at Belmont Grosvenor School, based at Swarcliffe Hall, Birstwith, Harrogate, which has been consistently rated ‘outstanding’ and ‘excellent’ in Ofsted and ISI (Independent Schools Inspectorate) inspections. She is looking forward to building on Magic Tree Nursery’s success and taking it forward into its next chapter. “Magic Tree Nursery, which celebrated its 10th birthday recently, is an ‘outstanding’ setting caring for babies from three months old. Set in 20-acres of beautiful grounds in Nidderdale, yet only a few miles from the centre of Harrogate, it offers an exceptional standard of provision for children. ‘I’m excited at the prospect of bringing my years of experience across the world to enhance this setting, and building on all that is special at Magic Tree to create a warm, engaging and thoughtfully prepared learning environment,” said Mrs Pedersen. Working as Executive Principal for Eton House Education Group, which has more than 150 schools globally in its portfolio, Mrs Pedersen spent seven years with the Early Years and Primary education group supporting them in developing nurseries and pre-schools worldwide. Her varied career has also taken her to Scandinavia where she developed a nursery and kindergarten, as well as working across the UK and Europe in a range of pre-school and Early Years settings.. Sophia Ashworth Jones, Headmistress at Belmont Grosvenor School, said she was delighted to welcome Mrs Pedersen as manager of its Magic Tree Nursery, which cares for children from three months. “We’re overjoyed to have Carol join the team at our fabulous Magic Tree Nursery. She’s keen to further develop our already warm and caring family nursery environment, taking inspiration from our unique and picturesque setting,” said Mrs Ashworth Jones. Baby Swimmers York, Pocklington & Harrogate. Claire, Mum of James from Baby Swimmer’s Pocklington class: “From his very first bath, it was clear our son James had a natural love of water. Sitting in his baby bath, he would become animated and demonstrated a natural reflex for kicking and splashing about. But taking James to our local public swimming pool didn’t go to plan - he became clingy, easily distracted by other swimmers and disliked armbands with a passion. We were apprehensive at starting swimming lessons with James, but within just a few weeks we could see a big difference. Baby Swimmers encourages natural water movements in children, so we didn’t have the battle with buoyancy aids, and James has become content and confident in the water. Now he jumps into the water by himself, resurfaces and then holds on to the side before swimming towards his Daddy. Lessons are stimulating, while relaxed, so if James doesn’t feel like floating on his back or refuses to go under water, there’s no pressure. Instead, swimming sessions feel like they are more about making our child feel comfortable in the water than achieving a grade. James is a quiet, often reserved toddler, who prefers solitary activities, yet in the water he’s so happy and, more importantly, having fun.” NOW booking for January 2019! 0333 8008345/ www.babyswimmers.co.uk

6 ways to
Stay healthy It’s tough getting you and your family through a long British winter without succumbing to illness somewhere along the way. Here are our top tips for making it through to spring without getting out the tissues!
Eat for Immunity Eat food that is rich in vitamins and minerals. Foods high in zinc, like lean meats, poultry, and baked beans can help balance your immune response. Green leafy vegetables like kale and Brussels sprouts are high in Vitamin C, which will also keep you healthier. Family lunches or dinners which include warm winter soups packed full of vegetables or fruit smoothies for breakfast (with some vegetables sneaked in if your kids will let you) are an excellent way to ensure you are all having more than your 5 a day.
Supplement The NHS recommends that all children from the age of 6 months to 5 years are given vitamin supplements with A, C and D in them every day. Please note if your baby/child is having 500ml of formula or more, do not give them vitamin D, as formula milk is fortified with it. You may also be able to get vitamin drops for your baby if you qualify for Healthy Start. (Check eligibility at https://www.healthystart.nhs.uk). If you give your children a chewable supplement, make sure it is after they eat because some vitamins cannot be absorbed without food. It’s also a good idea for adults and children over 5 years to supplement with Vitamin D during the winter. It’s vital to keep our muscles and bones healthy and is primarily made by our skin’s reaction to the sun. During the winter months in the UK, the sun doesn’t contain enough UVB radiation to create it so we must rely on food and supplements. Vitamin D is found in meat, oily fish and eggs. Many nutritional experts recommend everyone taking Vitamin D supplements during the winter; try at least 10mcg of Vitamin D a day. You could also consider supplementing with Vitamin C and Zinc to ward off colds. It’s been scientifically proven that dosing up on Zinc in the first 24 hours of getting a cold can mean a quicker recovery. If you are not sure whether to give your child vitamin supplements always take advice from a medical professional or nutritional expert.
Lettuce celebrate!
First ever veggie happy meal launching Jan 2019! McDonald’s UK has introduced the first ever vegetarian Happy Meal, along with a new Spicy Veggie Wrap on the main menu. The two new additions are in response to the growing customer trend for more meat-free meal choices. Singer and mum of two, Frankie Bridge, was one of the first customers to try the delicious new vegetarian wrap options, as she joins the third (33%) of McDonald’s customers who think it’s important that they start including more meat-free meals into their families’ diet. “Having more meal options that the kids enjoy makes my life all the easier and the Veggie Happy Meal wrap flavour was literally chosen by children, so I know it’s something that my son Parker will love too.” Working with the Britmums network and Vegetarian Society, McDonald’s invited parents and their children to select the final flavour. The discerning tasters selected the delicious Red Pepper and Pesto Goujon wraps, which have been awarded the Vegetarian Society Stamp of Approval. The ingredients are all also dairy free. So, whether you’re veggie, flexy or simply looking for a delicious meat free lunch you can come and #LiveYourBestLunch at your local McDonald’s.

Get Outdoors Make sure you and the family get outside. It’s thought that at least 2 million people in the UK suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) which is caused by lack of sunlight and it’s recommended that you should try getting out for at least an hour a day in natural daylight. Midday on a sunny day is a good time to go out as that is when the sun is at its strongest. Using a light box, exercising and talking therapy can help people afflicted with SAD and if you think you or one of your family is affected, then talk to your GP.
Sleep Well Make sure adults in your family are getting 8 hours of sleep every night. If you are run down through lack of sleep, you are more susceptible to illness. Getting enough sleep will boost your immune system and help you fend off any nasty colds and illnesses. Sleep also supports healthy brain function and maintenance of your physical health. Toddlers should be getting 11 to 14 hours sleep a day, while pre-schoolers need 10-13 hours. School age children need 9 to 11 hours and teenagers 8 to 10 hours. Make sure your offspring have time away from electronic devices before bed. Having a hot bath and reading book is a great way for all ages to wind down for a restful night’s sleep.
De-Stress Being stressed can make you more likely to catch a cold or illness because it reduces the body’s ability to fight off infection. Regular exercise helps you de-stress and get fitter, whilst meditation can also help you unwind. There are some excellent meditation and relaxation apps available. Headspace for kids focuses on calm, kindness and bedtime (www.headspace.com/kids). Calm (www.calm.com) also provides mindfulness and sleep stories for children of varying ages, whilst www.dreamykid.com has lots of great meditations and visualisations just for children and teens. Yoga sessions or a daily walk are also great ways to help you all wind down.
Wash your Hands Emphasise to all your family members the importance of washing hands regularly. Around 80% of infectious diseases are spread by touch. Make sure you explain the need to use hot water, anti-bacterial soap and wash hands for 45 seconds or longer. Teach children to rub the backs of their palms and hands, including their thumbs!
Try Something New Don’t stay cooped up indoors, try something new as a family. Invest in wellies and wet weather gear and get exploring whatever the weather. Make snow paint. If we’re lucky enough to get a downfall this year, you can add food colouring to a spray bottle, get out in the garden and turn the white stuff multi-coloured! familiesonline.co.uk
She means business.. Here we find out a bit more about Joni Southall, who runs See York, Run York.
Who are you and where do you live?
I am a 41-year old mum of two teenage girls. I was born and raised in York and, apart from a brief period living in the Midlands (where I met my husband Jon), I have lived in York most of my life. I have a full-time day job working in the legal industry at a solicitor’s firm in Huddersfield. However, my true passion is running. I have been running on and off since I was at school. My dad and running inspiration, Gary Wade, is a keen marathon runner and I was eventually bitten by the marathon bug too. My training runs take me all over York, usually in the early hours of the day before the City is awake. I feel extremely lucky to have the City to myself in the early hours, running up and down the Shambles without the crowds, around the Minster and experiencing the sunrise from the bar walls.
Tell us a bit about your business. I provide running tours of York, showing off the main sights but also hidden gems in and around the City centre. Over the last couple of years, my business has developed, and I now organise running events too. Many of my family worked for Terry’s of York. In 2017, Terry’s celebrated its 250th anniversary and what better way to celebrate such an occasion, than with a running event? Our York themed running events were then born, starting with our Chocolate 10km in July 2017. We now have a host of York themed running events, ranging from 5-mile races up to ultra-marathon distance. We want to offer the runners of York something a little different to your usual 10km events.
We also wanted to provide a safe, friendly environment for those runners who have never run in a “race” before. This year, we introduced the Bloodaxe Challenge which is a lapped event around the cycle circuit at York Sports Village. Runners could come along and run as many or as few laps as they wished within the 2-hour time limit. This allowed runners to set their own challenge, their own goals in a non-competitive, social environment. Despite the rain and the cold, the event was a huge success. We also work with and support local York businesses. Our events have been supported by the York Dungeons, York Chocolate Story, Indigo Greens, the Yorkshire Air Museum and York Cocoa House. Our last couple of events, The Turpin Challenge and the Gunpowder Plot 10km were supported by the York Dungeons and we were very privileged to have Dick Turpin and Guy Fawkes come along to these events to take photographs with the runners and to start the races. Our events are rather low key, and we attract around 300 runners to the events. They are social and friendly, and we encourage all runners, no matter how fast they are, to support each other.
What inspired you to set up the business?
I wanted to share my running experiences with others. When tourists visit our beautiful City, they only get to see a very small snippet of what York has to offer - they rarely have the opportunity or time to explore beyond the main tourist sights. A great way to explore York is on foot and for me, it is through running and this led me to set up my business.
What would your advice be to other business women? It is extremely hard work running a business, being a mum and working full time and it involves lots of long days and working most weekends. However, I could not host these events myself and See York Run York is very much a family affair. So, I’d say get as much help as you possibly can! I organise the events and deal with the admin. My Dad is my chief marshal and sets out all of the routes. He also is the brain behind many of the events and our amazing medals and is always dreaming up new ideas. My husband, Jon, Step Mum, Sandra and sister Finty bake cakes for the runners and ensure that the races go smoothly. Even our children, Millie and Eva, are involved - they both marshal at the events, help with the race registration and Millie delivers the race briefing to the crowd of eager runners at the start of each race. I could not do the events without them and without the help of our regular volunteers, Gary and Annabel. Find out more at: www.seeyorkrunyork.co.uk
How your child’s body teaches their brain to think! By Kate Henebury
Have you ever wondered why children never sit still? Have you noticed they have the need to move, fidget, explore, touch and interact with everything around them? Does it feel like they’re not listening and not doing as they are asked? This is exactly what their bodies are made for. Children, particularly in the early years, are not designed to sit down and listen to instructions. They’ve got to move and explore their environment with their body and all 7 of their senses! Although it may not be obvious, they pay attention more than we think as they are curious and interested in their environment but the only way to learn is to experience it with their bodies. Think about the brain as a galaxy with billions of stars. The brain cells need to be connected in order to create strong pathways with each other which allows the brain cells to communicate and process information from our senses. Connections are made through movement, new experiences and countless amounts of repetition! Did you know that 90% of the neural pathways in the brain will be set for life during the early years of childhood? These pathways between the brain cells determine not only how children think and learn but also shape who they become. Their passions and interests are one of the most important foundations in the formation of individuality.
to move/perform the certain task without thinking about it. This is not a new concept. Maria Montessori highlighted the connection between minds and bodies in her 1936 book The Secret of Childhood, ‘Movement, or physical activity, is thus an essential factor in intellectual growth.’ Researchers have studied the movements of children as young as four to six months old and have found earlier and more frequent movement correlates with academic learning further down the road. travel
Travelling with your dog By Paul Wojnicki There was a time when owning a dog meant you were restricting yourself to holidays in the UK, with its unpredictable weather and vastly inflated summer prices. Or even worse (for Fido anyway) you had to leave your four-legged friend in kennels for a week. These days however travelling abroad with your dog has never been easier, and while you’re not going to be jetting off on an all-inclusive break to Mexico together you can find some excellent options in Europe.
How to get to the continent When it comes to the best dog friendly method of getting to the continent from the north of England it’s got to be the DFDS Seaways’ crossing from Newcastle to Holland. DFDS introduced dog friendly cabins in 2017 and are the only ferry company that allows dogs onboard for foot passengers, so if you’re worried about driving overseas it’s the only option. The dog friendly cabins are less clean and functional but not up to the luxury standards of the Commodore Class ones, so if you have to sail in luxury then you’ll need to use the onboard kennels. There are also plenty of things to do for the kids, with some of the best entertainment facilities we’ve come across, and we’ve tried all the ferry companies.
Getting around the continent Once you’ve landed in Holland you have a choice of tollfree motorways or fast efficient trains to get you around. Day tickets for dogs cost just €3,10 no matter how far or often you travel in the country. If you’re wanting to travel further afield then the high speed Thalys or ICE networks can have you in Cologne or Paris in around three hours and Brussels in less than two hours. From Paris it’s possible to take the very comfortable Thello sleeper train to Milan, Verona, Lake Garda and Venice in Italy. Or on the super-fast TGV’s to the Mediterranean in the south of France in just three hours. While night trains from Cologne and Dusseldorf will take you to Verona, Vienna and Innsbruck in a private sleeper cabin for as little as £200 for a family of four with a dog.
Where to Stay The vast majority of hotels in Europe accept dogs, sometimes with a small surcharge. For accommodation with cooking facilities you might want to consider a holiday rental or even better for the kids a holiday camp. Canvas Holidays are actively targeting dog owners and their mobile homes tend to have lower prices than the other main operators, while sharing many of the same parks. This year we used Canvas in Brittany and Lake Garda and had a great time on both sites.
Finding a vet If you travel overseas with a dog you’re going to need to visit a vet in order to be allowed back again. Current regulations require owners to worm their dogs (with a registered vet) 1-5 days before returning to the UK. To find a vet type your destination into Google maps, then use the “Search Nearby” option to find a vet in the area.
A little inspiration From Holland it’s around three hours to Dusseldorf, where a night train departs every night for Innsbruck. This is a magical city in its own right, with huge mountains overlooking a charming old town and plenty of lakes to cool off in during hotter months. From Innsbruck you can then head out to Lake Garda in northern Italy and swim with Fido in crystal clear warm waters. Canvas Holidays have a number of camps in this region, all with enough entertainment to keep the kids happy, while there’s enough culture to satisfy seasoned travellers.
Rhine Valley If you’d rather not use the night train to travel further afield then why not visit the Rhine Valley. Starting at Cologne you’ll see the world-famous cathedral, from where a fun train can carry you to the Rhine. Here you can take a cruise along the Rhine on one of KD Lines hop-on hop-off ferries and visit spectacular hilltop castles galore. It costs less than £100 for a family of four and takes in the exact same sites as the luxury cruise boats that cost thousands of pounds per person.
Roman France While it’s possible to travel to Rome overland, it’s a lot easier to travel to Nîmes and the surrounding Roman ruins in Languedoc and Provence. The amphitheatre at Nîmes may be smaller than the Coliseum but it is still a magnificent sight, and with a fraction of the crowds in the surrounding area. You will also find Maison Carré, a well preserved fifth century Roman temple in the city and the Jardins de la Fontaine that house the remains of a Roman baths, beautiful statues and a ruined 2nd century temple. You can even combine Nîmes with a visit to Disneyland, since Nîmes is just a three-hour train ride away on the Ouigo service from Marne la Vallee (a.k.a. Disneyland Paris) and costs from just 10 Euros each way. While Disneyland don’t allow dogs in the park they do have onsite kennels and I’m sure Fido would forgive you having a few hours away from him, since you haven’t left him behind. Wherever you decide to go, Yappy Travels!
Travel essentials Pet passport aside you’ll need a number of other items to make sure your overseas trip goes smoothly. You’re going to need a rucksack or similar to carry your water and bowl. You can buy inflatable bowls for ease of transport. If you’re travelling in the winter months bear in mind that some countries require you to have winter tyres fitted, check with the AA for individual requirements for all European countries. Finally if you’re travelling in summer, make sure you have an air conditioned car, it’s no fun for either of you if you don’t.

New Year Reading Resolutions
By Liz Walker
Start the New Year with good reading habits to get children ‘reading fit.’ Helping your children learn to read is the most important activity you can do to help with their education. Follow Reading Chest’s New Year’s reading resolutions to get on the right track:
1. Read to your children as often as possible. Children will see that reading is enjoyable and exciting, rather than just another piece of homework to be ticked off. Reading to children opens up a world of books that they might not choose to read themselves and really helps to maintain struggling readers’ interest in books. 2. Listen to your children read every day. Just ten minutes a day will make a huge difference. Establish a good reading routine and let your children read good quality, inspiring books. They will lose interest with books that are too challenging and will not make progress if books are too easy. 3. Play more board games.
Most families play lots of board games over Christmas, which then sit gathering dust after the holidays and busy working lives take over.
4. Make time for reading yourself - and let your children
see you. Research shows that the impact of parents reading, has a huge positive impact on children’s reading. If children never see their parents reading, they are much less likely to pick up a book themselves. Boys are more likely to pick up a book if they see Dads reading. For more reading advice and easy access to a wide range of books suited to your child’s ability, visit www. readingchest.co.uk, the book rental service for children learning to read. Families Vale of York readers can join Reading Chest with £5 off their first month’s membership using the discount code FAM18.

fun
By Elisabeth Dolton Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the range and volume of activities, classes and clubs available for your child to join? Aside from the important issue of LOGISTICS, in other words, how are these activities going to fit into your schedule, how do you go about deciding what to choose?
Here are my top tips: • Talk to your children, explain how many activities you think there is time for and find out what they are interested in pursuing. • Let them choose at least one class, activity or club themselves. • Help them choose activities that reflect who they are and what they want to learn and don’t impose your own preferences. • If you have a reluctant child, explain that it’s important and fun to try new things, but don’t insist. • Remember that moving from one activity to another is normal amongst children. • Always consider the benefits of an activity. For instance, there’s great value in discipline-based activities that create a quality product over a period of time and teach value skills such as leadership and team work eg putting on a play. • Don’t assume that high cost equals high quality. • Ensure staff members are professionals with relevant skills and experience. • Consider the mix of activities. The benefits of exercise are huge, so try to include a sport. If you are stuck between two similar activities, consider the usefulness, e.g. drumming lessons might be cool, but the guitar might have wider applicability. Good luck!
