welcome

At this time of year my friends and I take stock. It’s a New Year’s Eve tradition for us to look back at what has changed over the past twelve months and to look ahead to what’s coming. And I’ve got a really good feeling about 2012 because it’s one of those years that I feel I’ve been waiting for for a long time. Not that I’m wishing my life away but 2012 will be the year a good friend gets married, another friend will be having a baby and of course it’s the year of the long-awaited Olympics. It all seemed so far away when we the announcement was made back in 2005 (yes, I had to Google that) and now it’s THE year. Back then it was hard to imagine my 3 year old son being 10 and taking him along for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I couldn’t even envisage him starting school at that time, let alone reaching double figures. Not only is that now almost a reality, I’ve had another child since then. And 2012 is the year she starts school! Happy New Year!

The fun and educational Tennis Tykes programme for children from 2 years old, runs busy classes across the country including closer to home in York, Harrogate and Wetherby. On the back of its success, additional pre school classes at independent school, Belmont Grosvenor, are now up and running and new classes in the New Year will run on a Friday at Kidzplay in Harrogate. Ann Regan, the BGS Pre School Co-ordinator is supportive of the classes saying, “ In the early years department, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Tennis Tykes programme has proved very impressive in meeting a large number of these development goals. The children have fun and at the same time the programme increases their confidence, significantly improves their all round personal, social and emotional development, their language, literacy, problem solving and numeracy skills as well as achieving so much with their physical development.” The classes in the Spring term (week of the 9th January to week ending the 30th March) will run right across the region. Happy 5th Birthday to Socatots

Socatots has been running for 5 years now and over that time the classes have developed a tremendous reputation for quality, fun coaching. “We develop children to have good all-round sporting ability,” says Brian Macnair of Socatots, “but also children who are ready to start school with good listening skills, good number and colour awareness and an ability to persevere and complete difficult tasks. “We believe the Socatots syllabus is reaching new heights, encouraging children to try new skills and develop coordination and balance far beyond their years and we’d welcome anyone thinking about joining to come along and try Socatots in January. “Parents enjoy watching their children learn new skills, make new friends and develop a real talent. The football skills learned at Socatots are transferrable to any sport - we just encourage good habits and good movements.”

Teepees fire Children’s Imaginations Youngsters at the Magic Tree Nursery near Harrogate not only have 20 acres of grounds to play in – they now have some exciting new play equipment to explore. The children have been having fun in a group of willow teepees that have been created in their play area. The new structures have been an instant hit with children at the nursery. “We have introduced teepees into the outdoor learning environment for the children to develop their imaginations through natural materials,” said nursery manager Beth Dunwoody. “The teepees have inspired the children to explore a natural world in a wonderful way, expanding on their natural curiosity and their eagerness to investigate their surroundings,” she added. Make a Stand for Thomas A York-based charity is raising funds for local boy Thomas Arnett who has cerebral palsy. Thomas can’t walk and needs to use a wheelchair at the moment but an operation called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy would help him to walk and thereby totally change his life. Thirteen year old Thomas lives with his family in Strensall. His stepfather is currently in Afghanistan serving his country, he has a younger sister and brother and his mum, Adele Sullivan works at the local pre-school, helps with the local football team and fundraises for the pre-school. Family friend and treasurer of the fund-raising group Clare Inkster has plenty of events coming up to help raise funds for Thomas’s operation: “We have a post-Christmas disco planned,” says Clare, “a midnight walk, a fundraising day at Aviva York, and Escape Hair Salon hope to run a fundraising day. The local Army aim to have a charity event and we have been in contact with someone who runs marathons for charity - we plan to meet him to discuss potential fundraising too. “At the moment, the local PCT in York cannot fund Thomas’s operation and he will have to go to Bristol to have it including a huge amount of physiotherapy for years after,” adds Clare. If you can help visit the ‘just giving’ page MAKEASTANDFORTHOMAS where your donation would be gratefully received.

Tennis for countryside bigger tots Here at Families we often visit local pre-school classes so we thought we’d turn the tables and see what happens in classes for children who are already at school. And what better place than the brand new classes being held by Tennis Tots in York.

Adam Dove is Tennis Tots newest franchisee and when I visited his Saturday morning class at Clifton Methodist Church in York, his charges had only had two lessons before. Not that you’d have had any idea that most of them were novices because from the outset their skills and concentration were very impressive. Adam is quick to engage the children with his enthusiasm and energy and I’m impressed how much liveliness can be summoned up on a Saturday morning! He begins the class with an obstacle course whilst a few late-comers arrive and settle in. Soon the children are working on key skills such as sidestepping, bouncing & catching – all with their parents’ help. The children ranged in age from 4-6 and all were already in school and clearly this has a bearing on how receptive they are to learning – they’ve already learned how to sit and listen, follow instructions and work with others. As they work together I chat to Tennis Tots owner Matt McTurk who is the brains behind the business. ‘Saturday morning classes are great for dads who want to do something with their children,’ says Matt. ‘Often mums take children to clubs and classes so it’s great that dads can get stuck in too.’ ‘There’s quite a bit of parental involvement in classes initially,’ he tells me, ‘but with this age group we begin to move more towards independent play. Whereas parents tend to feed the ball to their children now, soon they will be able to feed to each other and move to a higher level of play.’ And the parents are certainly getting stuck into the action in class as Adam puts up the nets and asks the children

in turn to demonstrate various skills – great for self-confidence. Soon the children are putting together the three skills they’ve been practising: positioning, side-stepping and bouncecatching the ball in a large net. We then move onto hitting the ball off a stand from low to high. They do so with enthusiasm and always lots of praise and individual attention from Adam who is eager to foster their keenness for tennis and make sure they’re having lots of success. As the class finished I chatted to one mum, Portia, and asked her what she though of the class and why she decided to bring her six year old son: ‘Ben was really keen to come. It all came from him really - as a result of enjoying tennis on Wii Sport. He’s tennis-mad – and this is perfect for him.’ If you’d like to try out classes, you can contact Adam on 07807 949 874 or email adam.dove@tennis-tots.co.uk www.tennis-tots.co.uk He runs classes for school-aged children on Saturdays at Clifton Methodist Church, on Mondays at Francis Scaife Sports Centre Pocklington and Haxby Memorial Hall, and on Tuesdays at St Chad’s on the Knavesmire, York.

Could Tennis Tots be for You? Tennis Tots are currently looking for enthusiastic, lively and energetic individuals with experience in working with children to join their expanding network of coaches. Whether you’re a mum or dad/keen tennis player/exbusiness owner, employee or sports coach, they’d love to hear from you. For enquiries contact: jobs@tennis-tots.co.uk or call 07711 181 998

Retraction: Further to our news item in the November / December issue of

Families Vale of York we’d like to point out that Adam Dove did not, at any time, work for little Green Rascals Nursery as a foundation key stage 1 teacher.

Families Vale of York

We may be in the depths of winter, but we’re all looking forward to everything the spring has to offer. Families Vale of York looks at how the countryside is being brought to classrooms across the area. Mark Thompson is making it his New Year mission to teach children across Yorkshire what happens in our countryside. He’s formed a partnership with Stockbridge Technology Centre in Cawood, the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and farmers across the region to teach children about nature’s cycles. “Stockbridge have been using their Cawood farm to work with primary school children for many years to let them experience the thrills of growing their own food,” explains Mark. “However the children visit perhaps once a year and see a snap shot of the seasons. We felt we needed to show the children more” So Mark and his team have decided to take the countryside into the classroom. Throughout the course of 2012, Mark will make a series of 18 films showing everything from maize harvesting, to ram breeding and beetroot harvesting. The idea is to show primary school children what’s happening in the countryside at different times of the year. “Our Discovering our Countryside programme allows us to follow the farming year through the seasonal life of crops, animals and wildlife in our countryside,” Mark explaians. “Our videos are ten minutes long and divided into discrete sections, so that teachers can use short items for specific lessons. Last year we watched lambing season, and potato planting. There’s more to come in 2012.” The programme supports several areas of the National Curriculum including Healthy Eating, Sustainable Skills and Thinking Skills. It also links with the Eco School work and links into government initiatives such as Every Child Matters and Learning Outside of the Classroom. All the videos come with supporting teaching notes and are FREE to access. “The 18 videos we aim to make this year, depending on grant funding, will fit around school terms. We hope Discovering our Countryside brings farming, food and wildlife to your children so they can experience what nature does and how it affects the landscape and country life seasonally. We hope it will encourage them to make choices about the food they eat, the diversity of nature and maybe think about a future career.”

Picture thanks to Baby Sensory, York.

So, you’ve had a baby. You’re a new mum and of course you’re tired, but you’re also elated and amazed at this tiny new being that has entered your life. You spend every waking hour staring in adoration at their tiny little toes and gorgeous little mouth. Your exhaustion doesn’t matter as you drift from day to day in a haze of milky delight.

Or maybe you don’t. If you are like me then those first few weeks, even months of being a new mum are the hardest days of your life. Not only are you exhausted after weeks of unbroken sleep but you’re also struggling with breast feeding and getting your baby to take a bottle, your baby is unsettled and suffers from reflux and why oh why won’t it just go to sleep? Even if it’s your second or third baby, it’s still just as hard. You’ve got baby blues, or perhaps even post-natal depression. Now the most important thing you can do, even if you don’t feel like it, is to get out there, meet some other new mums and get some support.

Meet a mum and join a class Whether it’s a picnic in the park, a coffee at Starbucks or a motherand-baby group it’s important to get out there and meet other new mums. The NCT arrange regular coffee mornings and local playgroups often arrange get-togethers outside of the playgroup. You don’t have to ‘join’ these groups or come every time, but you’ll be sure to get a warm welcome and you will find these meet-ups invaluable, I promise you. Alternatively, join a class. This will give you an opportunity not only to meet other mums but also to bond with your baby.

Support groups If you’re tired, struggling to bond with or feed your baby or have a touch of the baby blues, there are plenty of support networks out there. • Health visitors – health visitors are there for the welfare of babies and their parents, and your health visitor should support you in whatever way they can. They should get in touch with you in the first few days of you returning home from hospital, but if you don’t know how to reach your Health Visitor your doctor’s surgery will be able to tell you • Home-Start is a charity that helps parents by providing volunteer support. Whether you’re struggling to look after your baby or suffering from postnatal illness or even just feeling lonely and isolated, Home-Start can help. Volunteers offer regular support, friendship and practical help to young families under stress in their own homes. The visits are flexible and you decide together what to do during that time. Call 08000 68 63 68 for details of your local Home-Start or visitwww.home-start. org.uk • Children’s Centres (also called the SureStart programme) have been developed throughout England to help parents, with many offering support groups for new mums as well as stay and play sessions, baby clubs, postnatal and breastfeeding classes. Find your nearest centre at www.direct.gov.uk/en/Parents • NCT runs Bumps, Babies and Beyond groups across the country, where you can make friends and share experiences with other new mums, and support is provided. www.nct.org.uk • Drop-in centres, playgroups and baby groups offer vital postnatal support and advice. Most importantly, they don’t cost more than a pound or two. Look out for local groups across North Yorkshire - baby groups often meet in village or church halls - pop along, you’re certain to find welcoming faces and you might just make life-long friends.

new mums help out there - By Joanna Parry • Start with a baby massage class, where simple massage techniques help stimulate your baby’s senses. Many local health services run free massage classes and there are plenty of private classes around too, often including postnatal support alongside baby massage. Baby massage has also been proven to help enormously with mums suffering from postnatal depression. • Baby yoga is also a great way to encourage baby-parent interaction. A natural transition from baby massage, it incorporates stretching, relaxation and yoga techniques, enabling you and your baby to create a joyful interaction. • Activity classes. These don’t have to be expensive, so shop around. Choose from music classes to drama to sensory stimulation classes – even for newborns! It’s a great way to get out of the house, meet other new mums and compare notes. Check out our advertisers and website for baby classes near you: www.familiesvoy.co.uk

Postnatal depression Postnatal Depression (PND) is often not fully understood by mums who experience it, yet one in three mothers will suffer from it. Becoming a parent can be a shock and it is perfectly normal to feel emotional, vulnerable and sensitive after your baby is born. Some mothers may feel confused about their feelings - they feel they should be overjoyed and instantly fall in love with their baby but this is not always the case, especially if you’ve had a difficult labour or a traumatic delivery. Baby blues typically occur between 3-5 days after the birth, and one theory is that they coincide with the hormonal changes that occur as the breast milk starts to come in. Another theory is that they are due to the ‘come down’ after the effects of endorphins, or a sort of physical shock reaction after the upheaval of birth. You may feel weepy, irritable, have a low mood and feel that you lack confidence in being able to look after your baby but these

feelings usually subside after a week or so. However, postnatal depression is more serious and must be treated immediately. Symptoms of PND can include: • sleeping problems • crying a lot • not eating or over-eating • physical pains such as headaches or stomach pains or blurred vision • a lack of motivation to get up and do anything • a constant sense of anxiety, sometimes escalating into panic attacks • a feeling of being lonely or isolated • having difficulty concentrating • feeling overwhelmed and unable to cope • having no interest in sex • feeling guilty about everything and wondering if you are a bad mother • being overly protective of your baby • feeling emotionally disconnected from your baby • having frightening thoughts about harming yourself or your baby or about bad things happening If you feel any of the above, it is important to seek professional help. Your GP may suggest antidepressant medication and/or counselling and your health visitor will know about local postnatal depression support groups. You can also go to www.apni.org or www.birthtraumaassociation.org.uk for information, support and advice. Also, tell your family and close friends, as talking about your feelings is part of the cure.

Treat yourself If you feel up to it, get a babysitter for an hour or two and treat yourself to some quality ‘me’ time. Try a day spa for a pampering and revitalising treatment, or many of the ‘Yummy Mummy’ clubs that are springing up across the country offer spa treatments as well as a range of classes and support groups for new mums, usually with crèches onsite. Alternatively, take a walk in the park with a hot chocolate. It will do you the world of good!

Thinking about Nursery?

If you decide to return to work soon after you have had your baby, what sort of questions should you be asking a prospective nursery? Amanda Nutbrown manager of First Steps Nursery at Clifton Moor has answered some of the most pressing questions parents have when they entrust others with the care of their little ones. What’s the youngest age a child can be placed in nursery? In York we are registered to take babies from 8 weeks old and we do have a few babies of that age here the moment. This is always something that people ask - usually to reassure themselves their baby isn’t going to be the youngest.

a full day is from 7.30am-6pm and costs £41. A half day runs from 8.30-12.30, or 1.30-5.30 and costs £22.75. If parents are already a member of the gym they are offered a 5% discount and we also offer a 10% sibling discount. What happens if I’m still breast feeding? Will I be able to bring expressed milk to be fed to my baby? Will nursery fit in with the routines my Nurseries should be able to cater for parents baby has – or will the nursery change his who want to bring in bottles of expressed milk routines to fit theirs? for their babies to have during the day. We have Nurseries usually do their very best to respect a fridge which we can store it in and suitable parental wishes and adhere to routines. We often facilities to heat it up to the correct temperature. find that when they are in a different environment I use ‘real’ nappies. Will things do change, especially sleep patterns nursery be able to cater for as it is noisier! But as the baby that? becomes more settled and used to the We are more than happy environment, we find that their routine for parents to bring their settles down again and matches the children in ‘real’ nappies one from home. and we have a few What sorts of things will I need children we care for to provide and what does at the moment who nursery provide? do use them. This When a child attends for a full day shouldn’t be a problem you will usually find breakfast, midfor most nurseries. morning and mid-afternoon snacks, a high tea and all formula milk is provided. This is what we do - but of course each nursery differ slightly. We ask for parents to provide a packed lunch and also nappies and wipes - but other nurseries will include these. It’s a good idea to ask if the nursery is able to cater for any allergies and dietary requirements - good nurseries will be able to. What sort of costs can I expect? Costs vary depending on the nursery but at First Steps York

How will I know my baby is happy – is there regular communication with parents? Nursery can be in contact with parents as much as they need. Here every child has a daily diary sheet which we fill in with all important information, including feeds, sleeps and their nappy changes. The staff member who has been caring for that particular child that day will explain all this information to the parents at the end of the session as well as some information about what they have been doing during their time with us. If parents want to have a more in-depth chat with their child’s key worker about their interests and enjoyments during their time at nursery, it will be welcomed. As the children get older you usually have regular parents evenings where the staff are available to discuss any of the children’s development if the parents wish too. Is it all right to ring and find out if my baby is okay? For the children who are with us all day, parents will choose to ring us midday to check on how their child is doing. We understand that it is sometimes quite difficult to leave your baby all day - especially to begin with. It’s is absolutely fine to call and see how things are going. How long will it take my baby to settle into nursery? All children are different so the length of time it will take a child to settle into their nursery will vary. Most nurseries will offer ‘settling in’ sessions as we do just before a child starts nursery - 2-3 sessions is usually enough. Will they be looked after by the same person / people every day? This is a really good question to ask of a prospective nursery. Find out about staff turnover - ours is very low. Staff members will vary from day-to-day, but on a weekly basis the children are cared for by the same staff team. Sometimes nurseries allocate a ‘key worker’ to your child who is the first point of contact. To find out more about First Steps Nursery call Amanda on 01904 693 007 www.childrens daynursery.co.uk

Career Coaching Workshop for Women Two professional coaches from York have teamed together to offer a series of career coaching workshops, specifically designed for women who are looking to return to work. The workshops will incorporate a blend of coaching and career management principles and techniques drawing on the expertise of Michaela Oldfield and Rachel Martin. “Finding work, especially after a career break, often proves difficult,” says Michaela “and you can feel isolated and not sure which way to turn.” “It’s a competitive marketplace out there and now more than ever it’s really important to be focused and proactive about what it is that you want from your career and your future,” adds Rachel. Michaela and Rachel have designed the workshops based on their experience of coaching women in relation to career development. They also have personal experience of combining motherhood and careers and so have an awareness of some of the challenges involved. Prior to her career change, Michaela worked as Professional Development Manager. She now runs a successful coaching consultancy, working with a range of clients. Rachel who worked in various managerial roles within the retail sector is now a qualified tutor and works for the University of Hull whilst also running her own coaching business. Career changes for both Michaela and Rachel were driven by the desire to achieve a greater life-work balance. “Through our work it’s become really clear that many women need inspiration, a sense of direction and the necessary support and skills development to get back to work.” The workshops running over four weeks offer the perfect opportunity for women to come together, be listened to objectively and share their experiences whilst drawing on the expertise of the two coaches. “When finding a new career, developing belief in yourself is essential to success,” says Michaela, “and these workshops will enable women to develop a greater self-confidence. Over the course of the sessions, they will experience an immediate warm welcome and an environment that is safe, open and honest. “The workshops are an ideal opportunity for women, in particular mothers, who have been out of the workplace looking after young children, and are now looking to re-energise their career. An environment away from distractions provides the perfect opportunity to concentrate solely on yourself whilst also meeting other women in similar situations. The workshops will also appeal to women who are perhaps in an unfulfilling job and want to do something different and find a new direction. “The sessions will have a practical emphasis packed with lots of useful hints and tips as well as self-discovery exercises that will enable women to design a structured career plan for the future. They will be encouraged to focus on what it is they want from their career and look at life-balance as a whole.” The sessions will also develop the necessary skills that are important when finding work, such as writing CV’s, interview skills and job searching and there will be guest appearances from inspirational women - an exciting addition to the workshops! The workshops begin after February half-term but if you book by the 31st January you’ll receive a unique bonus of a free one to one coaching session with Michaela or Rachel, worth £60 (included in the price of the workshop) Contact Michaela who runs Green Shoots Coaching (07847300914) or Rachel who runs Inspired By Coaching (07717436674) for further information about specific dates and costs.

Living with REFLUX

Copyright: Monkey Business Images

by Sarah Butters

Before you have a baby, you’re told to see feeding time as a time of bonding. But for some mums, it’s anything but. Families looks at how living with a baby with reflux can drive you to the very brink of despair. Vicki Gilbert is a third time mum. To see pictures of her, her husband Sean and her happy smiling children in the early stages of baby Joe’s life, it’s hard to believe what was going on every time she closed the front door.

arch their back and cry inconsolably. It’s thought about half of all babies have reflux in the first 3 months of their lives to some degree, with most developing it at about 2 months. That figure reduces to 5% by the time babies are 10 months old.

“From being a couple of weeks old, Joe would scream and scream,” Vicki remembers. “At one point, the screaming went on for 18 hours a day. He was hysterical when you laid him down for a nappy change. He screamed through every car journey. The only respite we got was a 5 hour stretch at night when he literally passed out from exhaustion. It pushed us to the end of our tethers.”

Babies get reflux because the stomach valve hasn’t developed properly. That valve keeps the food and the acid, in the stomach. When it’s not working properly and baby is full, that food and acid comes back up. Symptoms vary dependent on the child and the severity of the case, but the inconsolable crying described by Vicki is common.

Reflux is the contents of the stomach coming back up into the gullet. The acid causes a burning sensation which can make baby vomit,

“Nothing worked. It was utterly heartbreaking. I remember being in my bedroom and shouting to my husband to call an ambulance. We never

If they are crying for long periods of time, then there’s something wrong and, in my experience, it’s usually a digestive issue.” Vicki Gilbert found support from her local GP and says without that, she’s not sure how she would have coped. He listened, explained and prescribed medication that has, after 7 months, eased Joe’s pain. Leeds based Consultant Paediatric Surgeon Emma Sidebottom says it is important to consult with your health care professionals about treatments – like products to thicken milk which helps baby keep it down, as well as acid blockers. “Some parents experiment with the hungry baby milks. These are designed to stay in the stomach for longer. But if you have a baby with reflux, milks like that will make it worse.” If you’re not getting the support you need from your GP, Emma says you can ask to be referred to your local hospital’s Paediatric Clinic. The specialists there will be able to see children at much shorter notice than waiting for a GP refererral. “Remember that 99% of babies with reflux will outgrow It completely without any treatment,” adds Emma Sidebottom. “Reflux is made better by your

Local swim school Swim Tots tells us all about

What age can my baby start swimming? That’s up to you! Babies spend 9 months in the womb and so are used to being surrounded by water, therefore they are more than at home in a nice warm pool: it’s usually the parents who are more nervous! Good baby swim schools like us only use pools that are warm, with water over 30 degrees, to stop little ones getting cold. Our youngest starter to date at Swim-Tots was 10 days old, but really whenever you are ready is the answer. Do I need to wait until after vaccinations? No. Here’s what the NHS have to say on the matter: “You can take your baby swimming at any age, both before and after they have been vaccinated. It doesn’t matter if they haven’t completed their course of vaccinations yet.” It’s a fairly common misconception, however, that you have to wait – it’s just not the case. Can I do anything to prepare my baby for swimming? To be honest, nothing is really necessary: they come ready for action naturally! A bit of a bath time splash, some songs in the tub and a healthy dose of quality time together in the bath works wonders, but if you can’t manage that don’t panic: the class will provide you both with all the skills and knowledge you need for a lifetime of swimming together. What should my baby wear for swimming? Most baby swim schools ask that your baby wears a double-nappy system. That’s a disposable swim nappy underneath and then a re-useable Happy Nappy over the top. That way we can all be sure that nothing will leak into the water that shouldn’t be there! When should I feed my baby? Ideally it would be an hour or more before the lesson, but like most things it depends upon your baby. If they will be unhappy and hungry because their routine feed has been missed then feed closer if needs be. There are no hard and fast rules! Do I need to be able to swim? No. All lessons are held in water that is waist high at most, and instructors can help you get to feel comfortable in the water. In fact the lessons themselves can help those adults who are less confident in water become more so!

How are the classes taught? Most schools’ classes last half an hour – that’s plenty of time for young ones (a good sleep is usually just the ticket afterwards). They should include a mixture of songs, games and fun as well as more technical aspects such as safety and technique. Good schools will have a structured yet flexible curriculum of lessons that gradually build on skills and competences learned earlier, revisiting pre-existing techniques to reinforce and improve what they already know. It’s a fine art, but one that we at SwimTots know we have got right! Will my baby be ‘dunked’ underwater? At Swim-Tots we can honestly put our hands on our hearts and say no – at least not if they don’t want to be. Submersion (a much nicer term for it!) can be a fun and exciting experience for both parent and baby but by no means do we consider it an integral or essential part of every lesson. We teach your baby to respond to submersion commands, in effect asking their permission to submerge them. If baby says no, we don’t dunk – it’s that simple! Some customers from other swim schools, having switched to us, have given us the feedback that they feel our sessions are less ‘dunk or fail’ than others’: it’s all down to the philosophy of the school, and their attitude to submersion. Submersion should complement the lessons’ core water skills, not become the be all and end all. What qualifications should the instructor have? All baby swimming instructors should have the ASA Baby and Pre-School Teaching Qualification, which covers holds, techniques and safety, and all swim-schools will give in-house training on their own lessons and techniques. Regarding first aid and safety, most other schools put their teachers through a Rescue Test which is the bare minimum and covers basic first aid and swim safety techniques: it lasts 2 days and needs refreshing every 2 years. We at Swim-Tots go much

further – we ensure that, along with the Baby Pre-School qualification and in-house training, all our teachers are fully NPLQ Lifeguard qualified – an intense 8-day course which requires on-going monthly refresher training and assessment in first aid, swim rescue and pool safety. This is the gold-standard as far as swim safety qualifications go, and demonstrates our dedication to professionalism from our teachers - there are very very few baby swim schools that can boast such a commitment to safety. Be sure to ask any prospective swim school what standards their instructors are trained to. What if my baby cries or is really upset? Listen to them – its best not to fight against them, and you can hardly reason with a baby. It’s pretty rare for a little one to not enjoy lessons straight away, but there are always some who take a while to adjust. It’s also not uncommon for babies to experience a ‘wobble’ at around 12-18 months where they want to assert their own independence and control in the pool – and elsewhere as well! Your teacher should know when to adjust the lesson activities to suit your baby: more advanced for when baby is confident, taking it easier when not so, sometimes even having time out within the lesson to play with toys and just spend a few minutes quietly with mum or dad. Like us, babies have strengths and weaknesses, good days and bad days, so it’s vital to listen to your baby and not push them too far out of their comfort zone. What are the benefits of swimming with my baby? There are so many benefits! Physically it helps with muscle development, core stability and co-ordination – the exercise also helps with cardio-vascular fitness levels. Emotionally, there is a definite bonding between parent and baby in water: sharing experiences, developing trust and achieving together really helps bring everyone closer. There’s also the social side of lessons – the children, and mums, all get a chance to meet up and great friendships that last for years have been forged at our lessons.

Local GP Clare Spencer offers some advice on food allergies

F

ood allergies in children have become increasingly common, but the good news is that

many children outgrow their allergy before they reach school age. There are a number of theories as to why allergies are on the increase, including the fact that we are all cleaner nowadays! Food allergies can result in a whole load of different symptoms and so you should take your child or baby to see your GP if you suspect it. What is a food allergy?

An allergy is when the immune system reacts to a food that has been eaten. There can be confusion between an allergy and intolerance. An intolerance is a reaction to food that is nothing to do with the immune system. For example, lactose intolerance where some children cannot absorb the main sugar in milk -but this is rare. The most common foods that a child may be allergic to are nuts, cow’s milk, eggs, shellfish and wheat.

Who is at risk of food allergies?

Children are at risk if they already have another condition linked with allergies such as asthma, atopic eczema (an allergy-related type of eczema that tends to run in families) or allergic rhinitis (a type of allergy that includes hay fever). Alternatively, they may have a parent, brother or sister with a food allergy or allergy-related condition.

What should I look for?

There are different types of allergy. One is a more immediate reaction (IgE mediated) and one is a delayed reaction (non-IgE-mediated) or there can be a mixed reaction. The main parts of the body affected are the skin, the gut and the respiratory system. Skin - itching, redness, urticarial (raised red rash like a nettle sting), swelling of lips, face and round the eyes , eczema Gut – swelling of the lips, tongue or inside the mouth, itching in the mouth, sickness, tummy pains, diarrhoea or constipation, bloody motions, reflux Respiratory – itching nose, runny nose or congestions, wheeze, cough, chest tightness or shortness of breath. General – poor growth.

Food allergies should be considered when there has been treatment for atopic eczema, reflux or chronic gastrointestinal conditions but the condition hasn’t got better. Anaphylaxis is a sudden severe allergic reaction and is treated with adrenalin, so needs urgent medical attention. People at risk are given adrenalin filled pens to carry around with them.

How can a doctor tell if my child has a food allergy?

If you suspect your child has a food allergy, you should go and see your doctor and they will take a careful and detailed history. It can be useful to keep a diary of foods and symptoms. The next step is for investigation or avoidance of the food in an exclusion diet, both of which may involve a referral to hospital. Which investigation depends on the history and whether an immediate or delayed type of allergy is suspected. If an immediate reaction is suspected, investigations involve blood tests, skin prick testing or patch testing. If a delayed type of reaction is suspected, an elimination diet may be advised where the suspected food is eliminated for 2-6 weeks and then re-introduced. A dietician may be needed and, if a severe reaction is suspected, reintroduction may take place in hospital. Elimination diets need medical supervision.

IgG testing, vega testing (where electromagnetic conduction is measured on the skin), hair analysis and applied kinesiology muscle testing are accurate in diagnosing food allergies.

Debate still exists as to whether breastfeeding prevents allergies. Studies show that babies who were fed cow’s milk or soya formula had a higher incidence of atopic eczema and wheezing in childhood. Are We Nearly There Yet? If you love travel books and reading about other people’s hilarious misadventures, then we at Families highly recommend this book.

Ben Hatch, author of Are We nearly There Yet?, his wife Dinah and their two children Phoebe (3) and Charlie (1) spent 5 months touring Britain’s familyfriendly attractions. In the course of 8000 miles they reviewed 900 attractions, slept in tents, mobile homes, castles, hotels, and, once, in their car. They were attacked by bats, had confrontations with puff adders, Nazis and Billie Piper’s pyjamas.

We asked Ben to share with Families readers some of the things he’s learned from his travels:

15 things Ben Hatch now knows: 1) Not owning a sat-nav today is like being a

14th century sailor and trying to round the Cape without a nautical chart. We bought one halfway through our trip. Put it this way, if I’d a choice – brakes or sat-nav? - I’d gladly drill a hole in the driver’s footwell and use my feet to slow down.

2) It’s unwise to accidentally-on-propose

allow Dinah, my wife, who has a raging cheloniaphobia (fear of tortoises and any creatures that look like tortoises), to wander untended through the Turtle Sanctuary at Birmingham’s National Sealife Centre. I’m also aware now that afterwards claiming “Sorry, I thought they were hibernating,” cuts little ice.

On the strength of a Yorkshire Tourist Board leaflet featuring Wallace and Gromit sticking their thumbs up, we rashly promised life-size models of the cartoon characters wandering around. However, the only thing Wallace and Gromit related was a chalk outline of them on the café’s specials board. We’d driven two hours to a working cheese factory to show the kids the processes milling and tipping and for them to learn how Wensleydale cheese did in the last Nantwich International Cheese festival.

empowering

kids

Why empowering your kids makes for a happier home life

Dr Clare Bailey explains why giving choices builds trust and competence ‘Go and brush your teeth! Now! Why haven’t you done it yet??’ ‘I’m going to ask you twice only, then the naughty step… OK… no bike, no TV!’. Sound familiar? And as you walk out of the room, do you wonder why it has to be such a battle? But put yourself in your children’s shoes – imagine being told to do the same simple thing every day of your life, wouldn’t you prefer just to be trusted to get on with it?

It’s so easy to get caught in a cycle where everything feels as if it becomes a power battle – asking them to do a simple everyday task such as brushing their teeth, they don’t do it when asked, followed by escalating threats and confrontation; without even meaning it, the morning’s off to a bad start. And unfortunately this can also start a cycle – you expect confrontation next time and so on, it’s exhausting and upsetting for everyone. For recurring situations of confrontation think about what’s behind their behaviour: • Is your response stronger or more punitive than perhaps the situation deserves? • Are they upset, confused or fearful and so unable to take on board the message or to learn? • Are they really doing it to annoy you? Or are they looking for respect and an opportunity to be trusted to make some of their own choices? • Do you really need to be involved in every small detail? Might a ‘you are trusted’ message be more effective in moving towards getting things done. Here are a few questions to ask yourself before next time • Is this important? Whose problem is it, mine or theirs? • Does it have to be done now? • Have I made it clear what I want them to do and why? • With an older child, talking through the problem and what might help develops their problem-solving skills and independence. • Can I offer limited choice instead? ‘WHEN you have done…, THEN you can have/do…’, ‘Would you like THIS ONE or THAT…?’ • Am I too wound up to notice when they are responding or behaving well, and do I remember to praise these small improvements? Often if we step back, take a breath and calm down, we can see other options which avoid confrontation. They have an opportunity to learn to be more capable and to make better choices the next time. Time and encouragement at these moments

requires astonishing levels of self-control by parents, but can make interactions so much more constructive. Children learn to be more co-operative as they feel respected. Trusting your child involves taking a risk as a parent. I remember being allowed to sit on the counter as a child of five and paint the kitchen wall. I can still remember how much effort I put in when painting around the white light switch in a dark petrol green colour. I felt competent and trusted. No doubt my parents had to tidy up the edges, but I didn’t see that part. I was not being over-managed, I was shown what to do and allowed to get on with it. So I did my best.

‘The hardest part of raising a child is teaching them to ride bicycles. A shaky child on a bicycle for the first time needs both support and freedom. The realisation that this is what the child will always need can hit hard.’ Sloan Wilson Of course you need to have some non-negotiables about areas such as safety, sleep, eating, family rules etc which are backed up with constructive consequences, but keep these to a minimum where possible. Then you can move into more expansive areas; imagine your older children organizing a birthday celebration for you (give them a budget and prepare to be surprised!), or making dinner one evening, or the young ones packing their own luggage for a trip to Granny’s, or perhaps gathering nice things for an afternoon picnic. Th ey’re likely to put heart and soul into the job and OK things can get quirky, but maybe that is part of the fun. Giving your child choices, even limited ‘This-oneor-that-one’ choices makes them feel trusted and capable. Feeling valued, they don’t need the power battles to say ‘Get off my back, I can do it!’ And when they make mistakes, or things don’t quite work out we can only admire them for having tried and encourage them to try another approach. You can contact Dr Clare Bailey from Parenting Matters about individual consultations held by phone or face-to-face, by calling 01494 677575 or by going to www.parentingmatters.co.uk. Parenting Matters also run courses you can do from home (or work) in small groups using an interactive webbased, coach-led presentation. Families Vale of York
