The Children’s Laureate comes to Stratford Literary Festival
West Warwickshire’s scouts need YOU Do you enjoy adventure and have a little time on your hands? If so, why not volunteer to help your local Scouts? Troops in the west of the county are currently experiencing high rates of growth, but due to a lack of adult leaders there are now waiting lists of up to 70 boys and girls. There are vacancies in all sections (Beavers, 6-8yrs; Cubs, 8-10yrs; and Scouts, 10-14yrs) in Alcester, Bearley & Snitterfield, Henley in Arden, Salford Priors and Wilmcote. Volunteering in Scouting helps young people, develops personal skills and can even enhance your CV. Wendy Williams, District Commissioner for West Warwickshire Scouts, said, “We believe that everyone has skills that they could share. We embrace flexible volunteering, so even if you can only give up two hours a month we would love to hear from you.” Call Wendy on 01527 853233 or email enquiries@westwarwickshire.org.uk
Get some help with the birds and bees… The traditional talk about “the birds and the bees” is one most parents dread, so a new online game, featuring a virtual family, has been developed to help parents to communicate with their children about responsible attitudes to sex and relationships. Two separate versions of the game (developed by Coventry University and game developers Playgen, with input from health and council partners in Coventry and Warwickshire) offer advice on talking to young children (aged around 7) and teenagers. To try out the game go to www.besavvy.org. uk/besavvy/game.aspx
Did you know that Julia Donaldson, author of the Gruffalo and myriad other fantastical tales, used to be a busker, and then wrote songs for children’s TV? We’re hoping she’ll bring her guitar to Stratford Library on Mon 23 April, where she’ll be meeting children as part of the Stratford Literary Festival. As well as scooping the Children’s Laureate, the festival organisers are also planning a Family Fun Day on Mon 7 May and a week of events for schools from Mon 30 April. If you’re in the Stratford District and would like to get your school involved, call Annie on 01789 470185. www.stratfordliteraryfestival.co.uk
New drama group comes to Stratford and Great Alne An Evesham youth theatre company is expanding into the Stratford District after Easter, setting up shop in Great Alne (just outside Alcester) and Stratford Visitor and Leisure Centre at weekends and holidays. Council asks parents for feedback
See all the news online www.familieswarwickshire.co.uk
Warwickshire parents are being asked to fill in a short online form about council services, in order to improve things. The parents’ survey from the Family Information Service covers topics including sex education, behaviour, general parenting support, childcare and financial advice. In 2009 more than 500 parents responded, which resulted in the council producing healthy eating courses and a ‘Surfing Safely’ booklet about online safety for children. The survey is available online until March 31. If you have problems accessing online services, call Ross Keefe on 01926 742208 for help. Go to www.warwickshire.gov.uk/ parentsurvey

Are they Safe in the Back?
Nominate a young hero for a Stagecoach award Do you know a young person who inspires others with their wonderful attitude, courage or caring for others? If so, why not nominate them for this year’s Stagecoach Awards?
Did you know...? l a recent car seat check in Warwickshire
revealed that around 80% of children were not correctly restrained in cars.
l around 1/3 to 1/4 of primary school children have admitted to Road Safety Officers that they don’t wear a seatbelt every time they get in a car, despite knowing that they should.
Worrying statistics, aren’t they? Using the correct child restraint in a car dramatically improves the safety of children if the vehicle is involved in an accident. So, during March, Warwickshire County Council’s Road Safety Team will be working with Warwickshire Police and car seat experts to raise the profile of the importance of not only using the right car seat for the child and vehicle but ensuring it is fitted correctly too. Look out for posters and height charts in your local nurseries/pre-schools and primary schools at the beginning of March. These should be displayed in a prominent place so that parents can use them to check that they are using the correct restraint. A useful `seat selecta’ and guidelines should also be available.
Set up in 2010, the awards aim to recognise, acknowledge and reward young people who have either faced adversity, demonstrated bravery, shown courage or cared for others and are good role models for youngsters – and he or she doesn’t have to be a Stagecoach member to be nominated. The awards are in four categories, and last November, the Bronze Award for Endeavour went to 7-year-old Joel Hassell from Leamington, who is pictured here receiving his award from Nigel Lindsay, the lead actor in Shrek the Musical, at a star-studded ceremony in London. Joel was nominated by Jacqui Dance, Principal of Stagecoach Leamington, Warwick and Kenilworth. “Joel suffers with cystic fibrosis and needs physiotherapy twice a day. In the past year he has fought off MRSA, yet he attended Stagecoach with a drip in his arm,” said Jacqui. “He demonstrates amazing commitment and has excelled in singing, dancing and drama. His confidence has grown. He truly has a heart of gold.”

Swing Sing girls to take centre stage at the LG Arena Congratulations to three SwingSing members who have been chosen as part of the select group that will perform on the stage of the LG Arena in Birmingham, for the Voice in a Million concert on Saturday 28 April. Their teacher, Mary Grigg, was very impressed. “It is an amazing achievement for my SwingSingers,” said Mary. “The final soloists will be chosen on the first day of rehearsals. I have a feeling that my girls will get to sing solo too!” The concert will feature thousands of school children from the Midlands and Wales. A pair of professional artists, Georgina and Beth, have set up ArtBase, running children’s holiday workshops, art parties and afterschool clubs in the Stratford area. The idea is to provide children of all ages and abilities with the opportunity to create, explore and express themselves using a range of techniques and media, from sculpture, to Batik, mosaic, printing, collage and canvas painting. Parties for girls or boys can have any theme (pirates, dinosaurs, butterflies and fairies are popular, but anything your child is keen on could make their party unique) and activities can include canvas painting, mask making, t-shirt or bag printing and jewellery-making. Holiday workshops run at The Armouries and The Croft Preparatory School, both just outside Stratford. For more information email info@art-base.co.uk, call 07971 054706 or see www.art-base.co.uk

Youth and Family Gold Challenge The Youth and Family Gold Challenge has been set up to encourage people to take on Olympic and Paralympic Sports to raise money for charity. Everyone aged 5 and over can take part either as an individual, as part of a team, or with your family and fundraise for one of Gold Challenge’s 125 charities. The Youth and Family Gold Challenge offers three options to choose from, and you can complete any challenge: • indoors or outdoors • by learning new sports, or pushing yourself further in your favourite sport • as an individual, team or family

1. The Family Activity Challenge Of the three options, this challenge is perfect for families, as it’s all about doing sports together. Learn one new sport and try a family run, walk, cycle or swim. It’s accessible for younger children (from 5) or those who want to involve older members of the family too. There are two parts to the challenge. Firstly, choose one new sport to learn from the list of 30 Olympic and Paralympic Sports on the website, and complete at least three hours of training in it. Then do two of the following as a family: swim 500 metres, run 1,500 metres, walk 5,000 metres or cycle 10,000 metres. The Family Activity Challenge can be done anywhere you choose (even on holiday!) – and over more than just one day – but you must complete it together as a family. 2. The 2012km Challenge Celebrating the Olympic year, choose your target distance at 2,012, 201.2 or 20.12km, then complete this in your preferred sports. You need to be aged 7 or over to register. Cover your chosen distance via one or more of the following sports (for families or groups this is an aggregated total): Running, Walking, Cycling, Swimming, Canoeing or Kayaking, Horse-riding, Rowing or Sailing. 3. Olympic Sport Challenge This challenge is for those of you who want to try out new sports. Pick five Olympic or Paralympic sports to learn or improve on, then train or take part in a competitive event to complete your challenge. You need to be aged 7 or over to register.

However your child enters, it’s not a competition, just a chance for children to express themselves and be part of the history of their country.

So, while all eyes are on the UK for the London 2012 Games, the RSC has given its summer season over to celebrating the global reach of Stratford’s famous son. From Shakespeare’s birthday (April 23rd) onwards, new collaborations with leading theatre-makers from around the world will be playing in Stratford, London, Newcastle, Gateshead, Wales, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Brighton and on the BBC, crossing continents and boundaries through the medium of Shakespeare’s universal words. What’s in a nursery?
By Joanna Parry
So, your baby’s growing up and it’s time to start thinking about nurseries. Day nurseries, nursery schools, pre-schools – kindergartens come in all shapes and sizes and navigating your way through them can be daunting. Whether you’re going back to work or just want your child to benefit from all that nursery has to offer, here is our guide to finding the best – and right – nursery for you. Studies have shown that children who attend nurseries can be more confident and often go on to do better at school. A good nursery will prepare your child for those first few nerve-wracking weeks at school, plus most children thrive on the stimulation at nursery. Another advantage is the year-round care they offer, and you know your child is being looked after by qualified staff who won’t become ill and need time off work – at least not all at the same time!
numbers and sometimes even early-stage reading. Most nursery schools require children to do either 5 morning or 5 afternoon sessions, so the same children will be there every day, which helps with making friends. They are often smaller scale with a personal touch, too, but perhaps are not so convenient for working families.
L Nursery classes in schools
Open usually 8am-6pm, day nurseries are a good option for working parents as many will take babies from 3 months. They should be Ofsted registered, and the day follows structured activities appropriate for each child’s age, interspersed with naps, meals and outdoor play. Your child doesn’t have to stay all day – many day nurseries will do half days or you can collect early.
The first step in ‘real’ school life, these can be excellent for children who are ready for school and structured, educational play. They are convenient if you already have siblings at the school, but again sessions are often only 3 hours long which may not be practical. Nursery classes in independent schools are more likely to offer full school-day sessions but nursery classes attached to state schools are free! It’s important to remember that a school nursery place does not automatically guarantee a place in Reception.
L Nursery schools
L Pre-schools and playgroups
Nursery schools are often more formal than day nurseries. They usually take children from 2.5-3 years and provide a grounding for starting school, teaching letters, shapes,
Playgroups usually take children from 2.5yrs, offering short sessions to ‘ease’ your child out of the home and into a more sociable learning environment. Playgroups have a mix of toys, games, singing, story-time, arts and crafts and usually an outdoor area. Parents are encouraged to be active members of the playgroup and their small-scale settings are less daunting for shy children. They are also excellent value for money as they tend to be not-for-profit and are sometimes staffed by volunteers, with parents staying to help out.
L Day nurseries
L Workplace nurseries
Emilia approaches These “progressive” approaches to early education are often seen as more individualistic and child-friendly than traditional mainstream schooling. Both systems are child-led, in that the child chooses which equipment to play with, but they are quite different. In the Montessori approach – set up in the early 1900s – the environment is set up to support the child in achieving his or her fullest potential, mentally, physically and spiritually. Play is seen as the child’s “work”, and children are encouraged to be independent and learn from their peers, rather than the teacher, who is there mainly for guidance. The Reggio Emilia approach – which began in the 1960s – incorporates more social play and encourages improvisation and creativity. Like Montessori, it places great importance in the belief that the environment should be both educational and beautiful. It focuses around a central ‘piazza’ where children can meet, surrounded by different creative spaces (such as role play, natural explorers, water play and the sensory zone) where they can explore and express themselves. There are Montessori nurseries at Stratford Preparatory School and Tree Tops Montessori in Leamington, and Merrydays in Henley-inArden is a rare Montessori primary school. Little Crackers nursery at Crackley Hall School follows the Reggio Emilia approach.
Nursery fees vary greatly, depending on location, demand and what is offered. They start at around £100 a week and go up to 4 times that, but there are ways to get help with the costs: L Nursery Education Grant - all 3 and 4 year olds are entitled to 15 hours of free early-education a week for 38 weeks of the year. This applies until they reach compulsory school age (the term following their fifth birthday), and can be applied flexibly over a minimum of three days. Free early education places are available at a range of early years settings including nursery schools and classes, children’s centres, day nurseries, play groups and pre-schools and childminders. Your child will be eligible for the Nursery Education Grant from the term after their third birthday. If you choose a nursery which costs more than the funding or use the nursery for more hours the grant will be offset against your bill L Your employer may provide subsidised onsite childcare, or offer Childcare Vouchers as a portion of your salary. Download a guide at www.childcarevouchers.co.uk or find out more about Childcare Vouchers at www.hmrc.gov.uk/calcs/ccin.htm. Check if your nursery will accept Childcare Vouchers L You may be able to recoup some of your childcare costs through the tax credit scheme, depending on the number of hours you work and your household income. To find out if you are eligible go to www.payingforchildcare.org.uk or www.direct.gov.uk/en/ MoneyTaxAndBenefits/TaxCredits
MORE INFORMATION L Find out about the Early Years Foundation Stage at www.direct.gov. uk. Search for NDNA member nurseries at www.ndna.org.uk/ parents L The Preschool Alliance www.pre-school.org.uk L SureStart has information about childcare options, tax credits and free nursery places, plus links to the Children’s Information Service www.surestart.gov.uk L www.childcarelink.gov.uk has contact details for registered childcare providers L OFSTED www.ofsted.gov.uk L For more articles on choosing a nursery, early learning, independent or chain of nurseries, childminder versus nursery, Montessori education and more visit www.familiesonline.co.uk
Both of these options can be great, but think carefully if your child is going on to a particularly academic or rigid school.
Much sought-after, workplace nurseries provide full or part-time childcare, but think about the location. If your journey to work is an hour long your toddler may not appreciate the trip home at 6pm and a nursery around the corner from home might be a better idea.

Children’s Centres
Once you’ve found a nursery, go and have a look. Go back again if you’re still not sure. A good nursery will welcome a visit and might even let your child join in. By watching the other children you’ll get a good idea of whether it’s the right environment for your child, and can hopefully rest easy about the important choice you’ve made.
A number of Centres – including Warwick and Kenilworth – have their own nurseries onsite. They offer affordable, flexible childcare for up to 10 hours a day, with the added benefits of the Centre’s health and parenting support programmes being on hand.

Inspectors reported that “the school provides its pupils with an excellent education,” and praised the drive and commitment of the whole staff, the school’s curriculum and the pastoral care of its students. Mrs Sue Molloy, the school’s Headteacher, said, “This outstanding report is a result of the whole school community of teachers, support staff, children, governors and parents working hard together to create a happy and successful school.” The Chair of governors, Mrs Catherine Kelso, also commented: “We are delighted by the report from Ofsted, all the staff should be rightly proud of this achievement. As governors we feel privileged to be part of this exceptional team.”

Join us for coffee – and raise money for charity – for Mother’s Day We’ve teamed up with McKechnies in Stratford for a charity coffee morning on Thursday March 15 (10am-12noon), to raise money for Clik Sargent’s Yummy Mummy campaign. There’ll be goody bags for the first 20 families to join us, 50p will be donated for every hot drink sold, and you’ll get a cupcake specially made by Stratford bakery Grants with every extra donation, too! There’ll also be pottery painting to keep the little ones busy. So come on down, grab a coffee and cake, and have some fun while knowing you’re helping a great cause! Time with you, alone Chances are, since the kids came along, life’s been a little (or a lot) less romantic. Mother’s Day is the perfect time to put this right, with a hotel reservation slipped inside the card and grandparents on standby for next weekend. Happy days!
Personalised works of art If home is where your woman’s heart is, then a few personal touches won’t go far wrong. Book a portrait session for the whole family with a great local photographer, or find a service that turns an existing photo into a fantastic artwork. What wife could resist a framed print of her wedding day as a romantic gesture?
Something really unique With a little planning ahead, you can present mum with a truly unique and handmade creation. Have the children’s fingerprints, hand or foot casts made into pictures, keepsakes or jewellery. Alternatively, take the kids to a pottery painting shop and have a great time making something that mum will treasure forever. Whatever you decide, we hope every mum has a wonderful Mother’s Day!
