Supportinghighly ablechildrenat home
ByErinMiller
Asateacher,themostcommonquestionIreceivefrom parentsis:‘howcanIsupportmychild’slearningathome?’All parentsaskthisquestion,whethertheirchildisstrugglingor flourishingatschool.
Youmayfindthatyourchild’sschoolhasmoresupportand resourcesavailableforchildrenwhoarestrugglingthanfor childrenwhoarethrivinginschool.Itisquitenaturalthatschools aremostconcernedwithensuringthatchildrenwhostruggleare givenasmuchsupportaspossibletoaccessthecurriculum.
Unfortunately,thebyproductofthisisthatsometimeslesstime isspentnurturingthetalentsofthemostablechildren.The DepartmentforEducationdoesnotstatehowschoolsshould meettheneedsoftheirmostablelearners,onlythatallschools haveanobligationtoprovideaneducationwhichmeetsthe needsofeverylearner.
Ofcourse, manyschoolsdoanexcellentjobinsupportingtheir highlyablechildrentobuildupontheirtalentsbutrealistically, ahighlyablechildwillhaveathirstforknowledgethatmustbe fosteredathomeaswellasinschool. Therefore, itisusefulto knowwhatyoucandoathomeifyouhaveachildwhoishighly able.
Whattodoathomeisasmuchaboutcreatingtheright atmosphereasitisfindingconcreteenrichmentactivitiesfor yourchild.
Ibelievethatthisisthreefold.
Firstly,beahomewhichisopentointellectualcuriosity
Ifyourchildexpressesaninterestinsomething,askmore questionsandallowyourselftobeguidedbytheirinterestin yourchoiceofmedia,outingsandfamilyactivities.
Secondly,beahouseholdwhichvisiblyvalueseducation

Thirdlyandperhapsmostimportantly,supportyourchildto becomeanindependentlearner
Aconcernthattheparentsofhighlyablechildrenoftenvoiceis thattheirchildisboredorunder-stimulatedatschool.Relative toage,childrenneedtounderstandthattheyalsohavea responsibilityfortheirlearning.Theyshouldhaveroutines andpracticestoturntoiftheyfinishtheirworkearlyatschool oriftheywanttopursueaninterestinaparticulartopic.For example,alwayshavingareadingbookorknowingwheretofind extensiontasksoractivities.
YoumayhavenoticedthatIhaveusedthephrases‘mostable’ and‘highlyable’interchangeably.Thisisbecause,sincethe YoungGiftedandTalentedProgramme closedin2010,there hasbeennoofficial,nationalterminologytodescribethemost ablestudents.Therefore,thedefinitionandidentificationof ‘highlyable’variesfromschooltoschool.
Thisdefinitionalinformationisalsolikely(andrightly)tobe keptin-houseasmakingthislabelknowntochildrencanhave awkwardconnotations,bothforthepressureitcanplaceupon individualstudentsandtheimpactitcanhaveonotherstudents whodonotreceivesuchalabel.
Therefore,becautiousabouthowyouapproachdiscussingthis topicwithyourchild,ifyouchoosetoatall.It’slikelytheywill alreadyhaveanawarenessofwheretheyfallintheirpeergroup andlabelscanbedamagingforhighlyablestudents.
