September! Time to settle down and establish the routines that make family life more manageable. First job is school routines, and then, after-school and weekend events which means clubs and classes. As a parent living in West London there is a huge choice of them and we have collected details of many of these in our feature. They are run by experienced teachers and most of them will allow your child to have a trial class before committing for a term. The commitment however is important. Don't let your child give up too easily as sometimes it is not until they are on the road to mastery that they really start to enjoy their chosen activity. As the parent of a child who has recently had to write a personal statement for university, it was the clubs and classes that they had taken part in, which gave most scope for showing an interesting side of their character. Enjoy this issue - we are back in October with our Education in West London guide.

News & Views Register for Wear A Hat Day 2018 and start planning your event NOW!

Wear A Hat Day is the UK’s premier brain tumour research fundraising event. It takes place on Thursday 29th March 2018. March is also UK Brain Tumour Awareness Month. Schools and families across the country get involved to help raise funds for research into brain tumors’. Brain tumors kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer… yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. Families are being left devastated by this dreadful disease. This is unacceptable! Brain Tumour Research is the only national charity in the UK that is purely dedicated to raising funds for continuous and sustainable scientific research into brain tumours. Taking part can be as simple as putting on a hat and donating on the day, but most families like to create entertaining fund-raising events. Many schools for example have inventive hat competitions, parades and fashion shows and raise hundreds if not thousands of pounds. On average, organisations raise £250, with small ones £50 and some raising more than £2,000! Whatever target you set yourselves aim to smash it!! Register now on: www.wearahatday.org and start planning your hattastic fundraising event! Your fundraising pack will be sent out in early 2018 and will include leaflets, posters, balloons, wristbands and badges to help promote your event and smash your fundraising target!

Maria Montessori School gains re-accreditation

Maria Montessori Nursery School has gained accreditation under the Montessori Evaluation and Accreditation Board (MEAB) scheme. The scheme offers support and guidance to Montessori schools in order to ensure that their Montessori provision is of a high quality. The scheme, which includes two visits by MEAB assessors to the setting, also seeks to reassure parents that their Montessori school works with the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. Building on the success of the MEAB scheme since it began in the summer term of 2008, a further seven schools have been accredited and twenty-two re-accredited in the spring term of 2017, of which Maria Montessori Nursery School was one. These schools represented a variety of Montessori settings, and the assessors that visited the nursery felt that it followed the Montessori ethos and was certainly worthy of the MEAB accreditation. They received their accreditation certificate and the ‘MEAB Accredited’ logo for use on their website, and were presented with a framed certificate to further celebrate their success at the awards ceremony held at the Institute of Education in London in June. Maria Montessori is based in Ealing and has 40 children between the ages of 2 and 5 years. www.mariamontessori.co.uk

Being a parent could help you live longer...

Having children could improve your chances of living longer, a new study has found. The research, from Sweden’s Karolinska Institute, used national registry data to analyse the mortality rates of nearly 1.5 million Swedes aged between 60 and 100. It found that those with children tended to live longer than those without. The study also found that men benefited more from being parents than women when it came to longevity, despite the fact that women had a longer average lifespan overall. At age 60 fathers had a life expectancy of a further 20.2 years, compared to 18.4 years for men without children. 60-year old mothers could expect to live for another 24.6 years compared to 23.1 years for childless women. The researchers suggest that one reason for the findings could be that children are able to provide better care, emotional support and argue for better treatment for their aging parents. Another factor could be that parents tend to live healthier lifestyles than those without children. Research co-author Karin Modig said: “In terms of all other causes that would affect your death risk in these old ages, having a child is not among the greatest ones. But it is still a 1.5% difference [for 90-year-old men] which is still substantial.”

Lemon Tree and St Matthew’s Montessori schools based in Ealing Broadway offering both full day care (8.00am-6.00pm) and term time (9.15am-3.15am) for children aged from 1 years to 5 years old. We offer French, Ballet, Yoga, Drama and PE inclusive of fees. Full and part time sessions available. Qualified and experienced teachers offer a high standard of learning, nurturing and care.

Study finds kids who spend more time on social media are less happy overall

Researchers from the University of Sheffield have found that children who spend more time on social media feel less happy in most aspects of their lives. The study found that spending just one hour a day on social networks reduces the chances of a child being completely happy their life by around 14%. That was three times higher than the estimated adverse effect of coming from a single-parent household and greater than the negative impact of playing truant. Kids who spent more time on social media reported being less happy about school, their appearance and their family, although they did feel happier about their friendships. Researcher Philip Powell said: “The problem with making comparisons in online media is that people tend to portray themselves in an idealised state. There is evidence that people think other people are happier than them after interacting with them online because we tend to post videos and chat that presents this positive image.” He also suggested that spending longer on social media could also expose young people to a greater risk of cyber-bullying.

Clubs & Classes

Too Much, Too Soon? Are we pushing our kids too far by signing them up to lots of clubs and classes - or offering valuable advantages?

By Sally J. Hall

Most parents agree; kids need to be stimulated and to have plenty going on to stop them getting bored. Mums and dads are only too aware of the value of after-school clubs to ensure their children are well looked after and stimulated. But with a vast range on offer, it can be tempting to sign them up for a different activity every evening. Piano on Monday, gymnastic Tuesday, maths Wednesday - and so it goes on, with more over the weekend. Of course we might not all be able to offer our child such a packed schedule - finances alone might make this impossible - but there’s no doubt that a couple of wellchosen activities can be great for giving your child an insight into areas that the school curriculum can’t cover.

6

What age is best to start classes?

Early years: They get very tired so keep outside activities to a minimum. For excess energy, a good run in the park is great for letting off steam. An art, singing or baby ballet-type class with the emphasis on play would be great. Infant school: Add a low-key activity to look forward to. Singing, music making, dancing, simple sports and swimming are all great choices for little ones. Junior school: As dreaded tests loom, add an educational class if your child is struggling with one subject. Extra maths or reading tuition can make all the difference to confidence. Senior school: It’s easier to add activities as energy and independence increases. As more exams come up, be flexible about allowing them to miss or drop activities.

What’s on the menu?

Mini Mozart? Many parents are convinced their

child is a musical genius - and they may be right - but pushing a child into playing an instrument can put them off for life! From seven years, a 30 or 45 minute class is plenty, with ten minutes of daily practice. This can increase slowly. Fitness Fanatic Sports and dance are great for fitness and flexibility and the chance to play with teams from other areas - though for younger kids, avoid classes that are too aggressive or pressurised. Be prepared for many hours spent track, field or pool-side if your child loves sports.

Mastermind If one subject is a struggle, one-toone tuition can pay dividends and if your child wants to study a particular subject later on, it can be invaluable. Mini Thespian Kids thrive in acting and singing classes and may go on to theatre school. It builds confidence and the ability to express themselves. Alternatives For every kind of child, there’s an activity to suit, so check the clubs and classes section of the Families website to see what’s near you. From archery to zoology, you’ll find something they love. CLUBS & CLASSES LISTINGS CONTINUE ON PAGE 8

What do clubs and classes offer your child?

• A chance to mix with children from other schools and areas; this will widen your child’s social circle • A chance to take part in artistic, musical and sporting activities not offered at school • A potential career • Teamwork skills • Increases confidence and the ability to mix • The ability to develop persistence and patience.

because kids miss out on life skills that can only be learned through play. “Judgement, wisdom and creative ability... come from life experiences,” he says. “For children, those experiences are embedded in play.” Sally J. Hall is a writer and editor who has written for all the main parenting titles as well as The Independent and The Mail. She is the author of Eco Baby and a contributing author to Watch My Baby Grow (Dorling Kindersley).

But, play is important too...

Educational Psychologist Peter Gray wrote in the Independent that we should allow our children more time for playing. He believes that more time in the classroom and less at play can be detrimental,

Explore Learning are helping children of all abilities succeed in secondary! September brings with it a new class or even a move to a different school for your child. For some, this is a very exciting time; at Explore Learning students are heard chatting away about moving to ‘big school’ and planning trips to buy new uniforms and stationery. For others, you can see they are a little more anxious. Even those that are very confident ask questions about what it will be like when they move schools. How will they be able to tackle the new, harder work? It’s important to talk to children about what they are excited about as well as what they are concerned about. Let them know that it is ok to be worried about change, but it’s also good to take on a new challenge and confront your fears by trying new things. Explore Learning offer a course tailored to children in Year 6 to Year 9 called ‘Succeed in Secondary’ which is designed to help your family with the transition. They support children with the skills they need to excel in secondary school including debating, essay writing, delivering presentations, persuasive language, analysing and many more.

14

Students get to grips with these skills though a whole range of topics including real life skills like budgeting and writing CVs. It’s the perfect course to help your child to fearlessly take on the challenge of secondary school. Alongside this course they will help you navigate the process of selecting a new school. Book your free trial today.

Explore Learning’s secondary top tips! • Keep them organized! Get your child to check their timetable each night and pack everything they need for the next day - one less thing for them to worry about. • Their new teacher will have had information about your child from their previous teacher; however if there is something you feel is important that the teacher knows about your child, do drop them a letter or email or ask for a quick chat. • Moving schools or class can result in your child missing their friends. Ask them questions about new people they have met to encourage them to make new friends. Arrange to meet up with their old class mates outside of school so they can still see them.

• It’s really important to remember that if don’t get your first choice of school, you can find out about your options. Keep an open mind - and try not to show any concerns you have about a school to your child. • Talk to families who already go there and arrange a visit to the school if you’ve not already been. You may find the school is the perfect place for your child. You can put your child’s name on the waiting list for the school you want to go to. This is no guarantee, but not everyone takes up the place they have been offered so you may get a place through the waiting list. Take the pressure off 11 plus exams. The exam is important, but don’t let your desire for your child to pass put extra pressure on them. Reassure your child that the exam is a chance to show off what they do know and if they can’t do something that is ok. Tell them whatever the outcome you are proud of them. Removing stress as much as possible will allow your child to perform at their best.

Education: High performance FOR ALL...

With the children back to school, or just starting school, you could be forgiven for thinking you are handing them over to the professionals and your job is just to make sure they get enough good food, rest and enjoyment so that they flourish in class.

Perhaps you think your teaching job is limited to hearing the little ones read while you make sure the bigger ones do their homework. But it’s more than that. What parents do at home educationally can make the difference between whether thei children succeed at school or not. The latest research from education and neuroscience proves how malleable the brain is, how learning potential can grow, how IQ isn’t fixed - it can go up if you invest in it, and it can probably go down if you don’t. The truth is that there is more room at the top of the class than we 16

thought and the vast majority of children could deliver performance at school more commonly associated with the gifted and talented. The key is developing the right learning attributes and attitudes such as curiosity, persistence and hard work. But with children spending as little as 15% of their time in class, life at home with parents has to be at the heart of this development. In our new book Great Minds and How to Grow Them, Professor Deborah Eyre, a lifetime specialist in advanced learning, and myself, an education journalist who has taken a special interest in why some children from similar backgrounds do badly at school whilst others don’t, have looked at the research in detail and come up with guidance any parent can use at home, fitting it seamlessly and easily into normal daily life. What follows are eight ideas you can use at home. They come from

Deborah’s High Performance Learning system which is being introduced in schools in the UK and abroad and is detailed for parents in Great Minds and How to Grow Them. You will be among the first to try them.

How to create a high performing child:

1. Cultivate confidence and resilience - if a child thinks they can, they keep trying. It’s the ones that think they can’t who fall behind - the ones who say ‘I’m rubbish at this’. Don’t sort everything out for them - and that includes tying their shoelaces as much as it does doing their homework. And model the behaviour - don’t give up too easily on things in your life. Key words: How could you do this? Have you done anything similar before? What did you do then?

familiesonline.co.uk | 020 8930 4707 | editor@familieswest.co.uk

September 2017

‘I know you can. I know it’s hard to do now but I know you can learn how to do this in time if you work at it.’ 2. Develop critical or logical thinking: The ability to deduct, hypothesise, reason and seek evidence is probably the characteristic most associated with academic success. Keywords: ‘Why do you think... (bread goes mouldy, babies cry, leaves fall when autumn comes, people disagree about climate change?)’ ‘I wonder if that happened because of this?’ ‘How could I find out the truth about that?’ 3. Encourage them to monitor their progress - very important to the high performer is knowing how they are doing, knowing they are on track with their homework for

September 2017

example, knowing they need to put more effort into improving certain things. Key words: ‘What do you need to be able to do this? How can you check you’re on track? How can you tell whether you are doing it right? 4. Encourage open mindedness being open to new ideas is the hallmark of an advanced learner. Start with being open minded yourself so you model what it’s like to be receptive of ideas that differ from your own. Keywords: ‘That’s different to us, isn’t that interesting?’ ‘I never thought of it like that, but that is such a good approach.’ 5. Practice - it’s the only way to get good at something. Make sure

it is regular, deliberate and planned, working towards achievable incremental goals and you practise what you can’t do until you can do it well. Key words: ‘You are really good at that now, what’s the next step up? (from playing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star on your recorder, writing a story of 100 words/swimming a width of the pool?).’ ‘Great Minds and How to Grow Them’ by Wendy Berliner and Deborah Eyre.
