14 Swim Clinic Featuring a list of the best swim schools 16 Project GET FIT We try Pilates, Boot Camp & Zumba 18 School NEWS

You survived the school holidays. If it was anything like ours, it had its ups and downs. We had the Butters’ annual BBQ in our rain macs. Guests cowered under garden umbrellas after being refused entry to our home ‘because it’s August and we have to be outside’. The girls made new friends at various camps and clubs and as ever, we had some great Yorkshire days out. But with the new term, comes new challenges. Last year I waved Eliza off to full time education and Isobel began her journey at a new school. This year the challenge is all mine. I’ve taken a part time post at Leeds University teaching the journalists of the future and to be honest, I’m a little nervous. How will a group of cool teens respond to a middle aged mum of two dressed in Joules, whose guilty pleasures include Micheal Bublé and Inspector Morse? It was Isobel who persuaded me to be brave. After finding out about the job, she asked when I was due to start. “I don’t know if I’m going to do it yet,” I replied. “Why?” asked Isobel “It’s not something I’ve done before so I don’t know if it’s for me.” “Remember what you say to me Mummy. If you believe you can do it, you can do it.” And she’s right. So I am giving it a go – not because I believe in myself, but because my daughter believes in me. It’s so easy to lose your confidence when you’ve been out of the workplace and in a world of soft play centres and Socatots sessions. It’s easy to forget that before all this, we were pretty good at the jobs we did and didn’t give new challenges a second thought. I like to remind myself that after facing the challenge of motherhood, nothing else is quite so daunting! Whether your family’s challenge is a new school or new job this September, we wish you luck. We’ll be sharing those first day nerves with you. Sarah Butters

Rachel Swann has spent the last 15 years battling with her weight. Three pregnancies have taken their toll and with diet after diet having failed, the guilt along with the pounds piled on. Visiting a hypnotherapist last year was a desperate attempt to make a change. “When I went along, I was at a particularly low ebb,” admits Rachel. “My weight was causing a lot of my problems, but my problems were causing my weight gain. I thought I’d never lose the weight. This was my last chance.” A year on from those hypnotherapy sessions, Rachel is more than 2 dress sizes smaller and an awful lot happier. Not only has hypnotherapy given her a new body, but she’s also got a new career. After months of training, Rachel has set up her own hypnotherapy business under the hugely apt name of Beautiful Swans. “People think of hypnotherapy and imagine you’ll make them run around pretending to be a chicken!” says Rachel. “Hypnotherapy is actually about putting someone into a very relaxed state, a focused state, ready to focus on the therapy.” Rachel begins by talking to a client about their eating habits. Problems range from helping yo-yo dieters maintain their end goal, to helping emotional eaters fight their food demons. Having battled and beaten those demons, Rachel says she’s in a great position to help others.

“I used to have a battle in my head about food when I was stressed. I’d give in and eat because I thought it would make me feel better, and it did for a short time. But after bags of crisps, biscuits and bars of chocolate I’d feel awful. The hypnotherapy means I don’t eat emotionally anymore.” This new career is a long way away from Rachel’s days running Gymboree session across Leeds and Harrogate, but it’s a challenge she’s enjoying. She’s using her background in psychology to work with women to create individual therapy

programs, using visualization to help them to see the person they can be. Helping women take control and find the confidence she’s discovered over the past year is proving hugely rewarding. “I feel fantastic and now I want to help the mums out there who are battling weight gain,” says a smiling Rachel. “I’ve got three daughters and I don’t want to pass my hang ups on to them. They need to see me eating normally and healthily. Thanks to hypnotherapy, now they do.” www.beautifulswans.com

LITTLE NINJAS www.warriormaa.co.uk Warrior Martial Arts Academy, Robin Mills, Greengates, Bradford BD10 4TE If you’re looking for an activity to combine fitness and discipline while building up your child’s self esteem, learning martial arts may be the answer. Little Ninjas is a kickboxing class for children aged between three and five years old. Here they begin to learn the values of the Warrior Martial Arts Academy which are developed through the Junior sessions (5 – 11 years old) and into the Teen school. “Some parents send their children to learn to stand up for themselves – a sort of antibullying message, says Vicki Hanson from the academy. “We also get very shy children looking to build up self esteem. Martial Arts can support a child in so many different ways. The student creed of respect and personal responsibility doesn’t get left at the academy at the end of the session. Parents are encouraged to report poor behaviour at home and at school, which can mean a pupil is prevented from working towards their next grading. Conversely, good behaviour is recognised by the academy’s reward system. “It isn’t just about punching and kicking, says Vicki. “It’s about respect. It’s about building confidence. It’s about teaching our pupils a way to approach their lives. Little Ninjas sessions run on Monday and Saturday. Junior Kickboxing classes are held on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. 07909 518 939

If you’re convinced you have a future premiership footballer in the house then head to Socatots for soccer skills from 6 months old. However, these sessions are about more than raising the next Rooney. They’re about teaching pre-school children co-ordination skills, building self-confidence and giving them a well rounded physical start. Claire Ward from Socatots in North Leeds says the classes are popular with both boys and girls. “Balance and co-ordination are equally applicable to girls and boys. Some families come so Dad can get involved in a weekend class. Some think their child is the next Ronaldo but most come along to have fun.” There are several phases to get involved in. Phase 1 is for children from 6 months – walking age, Phase 2 for children up to 2 ½ years old. Phase 3 takes the would-be footballers up to school age. At each stage children are using skittles, hoops, beanbags and balls to develop basic soccer skills. Its success is based on parental participation as Liam Weavers from Socatots in North Leeds explains. “We teach the parents to be a coach. Parents play a really important role in the class. The more they put into the sessions, the more the child will get out of it.” For classes in Alwoodley, Roundhay and Seacroft call Claire on 07910 329 675. FAMILIES asks‌ the Swimming Experts Did you know that 1 in 6 children can’t swim, yet it’s one of the best forms of exercise your family can do. We’ve called on our experts to answer your swimming questions, and there’s a list of the best swim schools in Leeds. There’s no excuse not to jump in the deep end!

My daughter is 6 years old and is a capable swimmer.. What’s the point of making her continue with swimming lessons?. Nick Wield from SWIMSAFE says‌. Learning to swim is a life skill but once your child can swim, it’s about so much more. Now your daughter is a capable swimmer, it’s a great sport to take part in. It promotes physical development, develops aerobic endurance and is the most beneficial form of cardiovascular exercise. It’s the safest sport your child can do, but best of all it keeps your child FIT.

The Little Hen Company

If you’re struggling to fit swimming into your week, why not keep your daughter’s skills up by enrolling her in an intensive holiday course. At Swimsafe we run five day holiday sessions which help improve the technique of a competent swimmer. But perhaps the best reason for getting your children involved in swimming is the friendships they will develop. I see that with the children I teach. Some have been with me since they were three years old and now, as competitive swimmers, they are also lifelong friends. Happy Swimming! Contact Nick on 07870 562 365

My 5 year old can’t swim and I feel I've left it. too late – he’ll be so behind other children his age.. What should I do?. Vicky Pettit from SPLISH SPLOSH SWIMMING says… It’s never too late to learn to swim, but you need to get your son booked into lessons as soon as possible. If you want to give him an extra boost, I’d recommend 1-2-1 lessons or an intensive course. This will help him gather more confidence before beginning a group lesson. If you can, top-up your swimming lessons with regular family visits to the pool. Make swimming fun and you will make him want to learn to swim – especially if he sees other children his age enjoying it. However, don’t focus too much on teaching him to swim. Just let him enjoy playing in the water! Contact Vicky on 0844 264 1102

When can I start swimming with my baby?.

For more information please call Nick on:

07870 562 365 Samantha Dalton from FLUTTERBABIES SWIMMING says…. You can start swimming with your baby as soon as you are both ready and we take babies from around 8 weeks. The current advice from the Department of Health is your baby does not need any immunisations before swimming, but if you are in any doubt then please ask your GP or health visitor for advice. If you’re taking a very young baby swimming then ensure the cord has healed. Also make sure the water is warm enough – it should be at least 32º for babies under 3 months and 30º for older babies. At Flutterbabies our emphasis is on the parent and child relationship. On the first visit to the pool, parents may be excited or nervous. Our aim is to help them relax and bond. Parents who swim with their babies can also be confident that they are laying down the foundations of a lifetime’s enjoyment of exercise. These days babies are left in car seats, pushchairs and bouncers and don’t get much opportunity to flex and move their limbs. Being in a weightless environment frees them up to do a variety of exercises such as twists and stretches and develops their arm and leg muscles. Baby swimming promotes physical development, strengthens baby’s heart and lungs, enhances awareness and improves sleeping and eating patterns. Contact Samantha on 01937 558 500

WORKOUT 1 // Pilates Where? Leeds Pilates Place, Kirkstall I’m lying on a floor with a slightly deflated ball under my lower back and Claire Sparrow is standing over me. She’s got her eye on my core, which is looking a whole lot stronger than it did a few weeks ago. Claire started me on a weekly program of supervised, gym based pilates 5 weeks ago and today is the final session. “Your program has addressed whole body posture – the balance of the muscles throughout the body,” says Claire, who is co-founder of the best equipped pilates gym in Leeds. But has it worked? I came to Claire looking to tone, trim and strengthen. As a beginner, I was assessed and given a bespoke program to tackle lazy posture from years of carrying children and slaving over a keyboard. It’s a pretty common combination and many of Claire’s clients are mums. Estelle Myers & “It’s unbelievably rewarding to baby Martine teach mums, helping them to get their self confidence back. But it’s not just about the pilates. It’s also about the support we can give each other.” Claire welcomes babies in the supervised gym sessions, and the child free clients I met are relaxed about the odd gurgle from the babies who come along to enjoy the show. However, there are also specific post natal classes for mums looking for a more sociable hour of exercise. Many who begin in this class, graduate to the gym sessions. Estelle Myers has practiced pilates through both her pregnancies and now comes along to the gym sessions with her baby daughter. “I’m enjoying using the machines and pushing myself a bit more,” says the mum of two from Leeds. “It’s helped me get back my pelvic floor and my posture and Claire has made me and Martine very welcome.” For me, it’s about being persuaded that pilates is worth an hour of my time each week. “You feel and see a difference immediately,” says Claire. “Clients see the rapid rate you can reclaim your body after having a baby – that’s why people stick with it. Regardless of the time you can commit, the money you can commit, we have something to suit.” And I have seen results. My weak lower back feels stronger. My posture is better and, as a result, I feel more toned. But the main benefit is the positive state of mind an hour of pilates leaves me in. There are plans to increase the daytime timetable here at Leeds Pilates Place from September, and I have plans to take advantage of that. “You’ve made massive progress,” says Claire. “I can already see the next step for you. We need to push you to the next level if you’re up for it?” And I am. www.leedspilatesplace.co.uk • 0113 225 0791

WORKOUT 2 // Boot Camp Where? Scaur Bank, Wetherby It’s raining and I’m being shouted at by Matthew Woods for talking while trying to complete 50 seconds of abdominal crunches. It’s hard to imagine why you’d return week after week to be told off, but this busy class shows a lot of people do. Boot Camp is about working hard within your own fitness limits. You choose whether to wear a Red (Beginners), Yellow (Intermediate) or Green (Fit) vest and Matthew sets you to work. The session begins with a group warm up followed by a mixture of cardio challenges and extreme toning exercises using the park’s facilities. There’s push-ups on the benches, races up the steps and planks in the playground. “Outdoor fitness has grown hugely recently as an alternative or supplement to the gym )(''&%$#"! # ! # #'& # # based exercise experience,â€? says Wetherby Boot Camp’s Matthew Wood. “All the classes take ' #(# # !% # ! place in the park and we make use of all the natural and man-made features here.â€? Having spent the past few years running, it’s been great learning to exercise with other people once again. There’s a range of ages and fitness levels here but we are all united in ! exhaustion come the end of the hour long session. Not only does exercising in a group force # you to work harder, but it’s good fun too. “We run the sessions through the rain, snow and wind but it means we’ll emerge from winter fitter, trimmer and more grateful for the English springtime!â€? says Matthew. Matthew’s Boot Camp sessions run on a Tuesday and Thursday evening at 7pm, and again on a Saturday morning at 9am throughout the year. www.wetherbybootcamp.co.uk • 07710 522203

WORKOUT 3 // Zumba Where? Classes across Leeds Rachael Gasgoine-Higgins is a self confessed Zumba addict. Along with her Total Dance partner Nancy Lucas, she teaches 30 Zumba sessions across Leeds every week and says it’s the best all over body workout she knows. Zumba is an hour of high energy dance set to Latin music. Inspired by Salsa, Merengue and Samba this is sweating with a smile on your face, as Rachael explains. “It works muscles you wouldn’t normally work. You certainly work up a sweat. You don’t feel like you’ve exercised, so you don’t get bored. It’s great fun.â€? Rachael is a great advert for Zumba. Teaching the sessions has helped her baby weight fall off, and she’s got success stories from all her classes. Many of her mums come along for more than one session a week because of the variety. “Zumba appeals to everyone,â€? says Rachael. “We mix Latin style music with some chart tunes. We might do a Salsa, but we’ll add a squat. That’s where the fitness comes in. But really it’s dancing, I’m totally addicted!â€? Total Dance runs Zumba classes in Horsforth, Guiseley, Yeadon, Boston Spa, Rawdon, Pudsey and Pool in Wharfedale. www.totaldanceuk.co.uk • 07543 338 491

Making MUSIC at

MOORFIELD Research has shown that learning a musical instrument can improve achievement in the classroom, help creativity and give a boost to a child’s self confidence. Sarah Butters visits Moorfield School to see how music fits into school life.

I

T’S MONDAY MORNING and the Swing Band gather in the school’s playground, ready to board a bus to perform at the National Festival of Music for Youth. It’s a huge achievement for the group, made even more special by the fact that every child in Year 5 and 6 is involved. Here, music isn’t simply for the gifted, it’s for everyone. Their contributions may vary, but involvement is compulsory and that means this is an achievement that’s shared. 89% of students at Moorfield School learn a musical instrument – far above the national average. Every child from Year 1 learns the recorder as part of the curriculum and from Year 2, each child has a place in the school’s choir. This puts music at the centre of school life and as Moorfield’s Head Jessica Crossley explains, it’s an attitude that reflects the ethos of the school. “All girls do everything,” says Mrs Crossley. “It gives our girls a complete ‘can do’ mentality to life. It means they never say ‘that’s not for me’ because they have to take part and they see it’s enormous fun.” There’s the opportunity to take part in the musical life of Moorfield even before a child joins the school. Staff run a Toddler Music session for pre-school children in the local community every Friday in term time. Once a child goes into Nursery there’s more structured music classes, as Moorfield’s Director of Music Lynsey Clark explains.

“We go beyond singing nursery rhymes. We incorporate instruments and learn about dynamics and tempo. We are also looking to spot musical talent. “ And there’s plenty of it Moorfield School welcomes here. During the final week of last term, children from 2 ½ up to 11 years old. 70 music exams were taken. In a school Bursaries are available. For more of less than 100 pupils, that’s quite a information call 01943 607 285 or reflection of the importance of music visit www.moorfieldschool.co.uk in Moorfield life. There are eleven instruments on offer from the violin and viola through to the bassoon and electric guitar. There’s also a desire to encourage a love of contemporary music, with the introduction of drum tuition from this academic year. The message is it doesn’t matter what you play as long as you enjoy it. “Taking part in music helps build confidence and enthusiasm,” explains Ms Clark. “It teaches the girls to support each other. There is also a fearlessness among Town theme with Shop, Cafe & Petrol Station our students. The

DOs & DON’Ts

of School PARENTING Starting school is difficult, not just for your child, but also for you. During this term, your child will spend more time there than they will at home. That’s why a good relationship with your child’s teacher is vital. Start the academic year as you mean to go on with Families Leeds’ guide to being top of the class.

DO introduce yourself .

DO be punctual .

Make sure the first contact you have with your child’s teacher is positive. Don’t wait for the first problem before saying hello. We’re not talking about pinning the poor soul up against the classroom display to tell them how wonderful young Oliver is. This is about a brief and to the point introduction so the teacher can put a face to a name and you can highlight any beginning of term concerns. Don’t hijack them at the start of the day – it’s a busy time for teachers. Make an appointment at a mutually convenient time.

DON’T take holidays during term time .

DO turn up when invited . Be it a parents’ evening or a school assembly, show an interest in the place your child is spending their days. It can be inconvenient for working parents to take time out, but every visit to school is a step to building a better relationship with them. “Parents should remember that children need their support, says John Tranmer from The Froebelian School in Horsforth. “A recording of your child singing in the Nativity play can never be a substitute for being part of such a unique and special moment. Also consider that parents who don’t prioritise these invitations can find it hard to get a sympathetic audience when they need the school’s support.

It’s tempting to beat the rush and the sky high prices of the school holidays. However, taking your child out of school before the end of term means they will miss out. Events like sports days and school plays may feel less important than academic tests, but they are just as important to your child’s social development. And like turning up late for school, it shows you don’t respect the rules you expect your child to respect day in, day out. “Missing school can send an unfortunate message that two cheap weeks in the Costa del Sol or on the ski slopes are more important than their education, says The Froebelian School’s Head, John Tranmer.

DO find a way to communicate with your teacher .

You wouldn’t turn up late for a doctor’s appointment, so don’t turn up late for school. By pitching up after the bell has gone, you’re showing your child you don’t respect the rules of the school, and you disrupt the start of the day in their class. And Richmond House Head Jane Disley says don’t forget the end of the day. “Punctuality is also important to children at pick up time. Little ones get anxious if their parent doesn’t appear when others do.

Unless it’s urgent, speaking to your child’s teacher at the beginning or end of the day is rarely a good idea. They are either busy preparing, or reeling from more than 6 hours holding the attention of 30 children. Begin the year understanding how to best get hold of your teacher. Don’t be afraid to ask how to best communicate minor issues that need acknowledgement, but don’t need a formal appointment. Maybe it’s a change of circumstances at home, or a particular subject they’re struggling with. Some schools give parents their class teacher’s email address, but at Moorlands School they have a different approach. “Here every child has a homework book which has a space for communications between parents and teachers, says Headteacher John Davies. “The homework books are checked everyday by the form teacher." If you begin the school year with a line of communication open, problems are more likely to be solved quickly.

FAMILIES LEEDS | September/October 21

DON’T hold grudges . Teachers are human and sometimes they get it wrong. Like you and I they have bad days and can make bad decisions. When that happens, don’t be afraid to speak up, but do be prepared to move on. Make an appointment and make arrangements to visit without your child. Then you can have a frank discussion. The vast majority of teachers want the best for the children in their care. If you keep that thought in the forefront of your mind you’ll do a better job of putting disagreements to the back of your mind. You and your teacher should be working as a team to bring out the best in your child.

OPEN MORNINGS Friday 30th Sept and Saturday 1st Oct

DO be professional . You have every right to expect teachers to act professionally. However, teachers have the right to expect a level of professional parenting from you. That means discussing disputes in school with those who can make a difference, and not gossiping with other parents at the school gates. “It is human nature for parents to be concerned sometimes about their children and teachers are keen to deal with any issues at an early stage,” says The Froebelian School’s Head John Tranmer. “Sometimes a trivial problem becomes distorted and assumes an unreasonable significance when a parent broods for too long.” Being professional is also about showing respect for your child’s teacher when you have conversations at home. If you show you don’t respect the teacher, chances are your child will show a lack of respect in the classroom.

DO help out when you can . Offering to help out is not the same as going into school to spy on your child! Schools welcome parents who are willing to give up their time to come in and listen to reading, or give a talk about their job or help supervise a school trip. It’s another way to help build up a relationship and show the school you are interested. “Many Moorlands parents have breakfast with their children,” says Mr Davies. “Joining other families before the school day starts is a great way for busy new parents to meet each other.” It’s hard for working parents to take time out. However, you may be able to combine your work with a visit to school. My children recently welcomed a dentist, a banker and a geologist into their classrooms. All are parents wanting to pass on their passion to the children.

DON’T believe everything your children tell you . At the end of every school day, you can hear parents asking their children what they’ve done today. For most, the last six hours have been a haze and to please you, they may decide to throw in a tall tale to get you off their case. Maybe it’s the tale of the PE teacher who made them run the cross country course SIX times, or the classroom assistant who let them have FOUR doughnuts for lunch. Just be careful before you storm into school to air your grievances. “Some of it is for your attention,” says Mr Davies from Moorlands School. “We had one child who claimed that she didn’t have any lunch because a teacher had eaten the last six fish fingers!”

DON’T attempt bribery . Pandora bracelets and UGG boots are NOT appropriate gifts for teachers whatever the occasion. They will not buy better grades for your child. Sometimes less is more as John Tranmer from The Froebelian School explains. “I have a lovely decoration given to me by a former pupil that has hung in my office for many years and it bears the inscription ‘Teachers inspire the future’.” The best gift you can give your teacher is a child who turns up on time with a positive attitude to school.

THE

BACK TO SCHOOL

SURVIVAL GUIDE

A new school year and it’s not just the children who have things to learn. Sarah Ebner takes a look at the issues you will face as your child moves up school. THE NEXT STEP – SECONDARY SCHOOLS It’s vital for you to start thinking about secondary schools before your child enters Year 6. So, you need to look up OFSTED reports, find out about schools near you and speak to local parents. There may be all sorts of application criteria which you need to address a year or so ahead (for faith schools, for example), and if you’re choosing a school which selects its pupils in some way (either academically or in a particular area such as music) you might want to think about hiring a tutor. You should plan to go on Open Days when your child is in Year 5. Don’t choose a school on the basis of your child’s friendships (or yours for that matter). They will make new friends, and you need to make sure this is the right school for their personality and abilities, not anyone else’s.

HOMEWORK You might find that homework is taking up far too much of your – and your child’s – time. The Government is keen to promote homework and offers specific guidelines. These suggest an hour a week for Years 1 and 2, one and a half hours a week for Years 3 and 4, and 30 minutes a day for Years 5 and 6. The idea behind homework is that it builds on what children have learnt at school. It’s not supposed to rely on parents teaching their children new concepts. But for pupils, homework can become a real burden, and doesn’t actually seem to enhance learning a great deal. It’s worth noting that there’s no definite link between homework and student achievement. In fact, for primary-school children, there appears to be no link at all. A review of 75 years’ worth of studies by the University of London’s Institute of Education found that the benefits were negligible. As a child moves up the school, I think homework can help with exam preparation and possibly time-management skills. But I’m not convinced that children need so much of it. However, the reality is that homework does exist, so here are some tips to ease the pain: 1. Find somewhere quiet to do it – not in front of the TV or around loud younger siblings. 2. Set up a workstation – a desk or table rather then the floor. 3. Don’t do it too late – your child, and you, shouldn’t do homework when you’re too tired. 4. Don’t help if you don’t know – it’s confusing if you offer help with maths, but don’t know the methods your child uses. 5. If all else fails, offer bribes – for instance, tell them they can play on the computer only after they’ve finished.

Sarah Ebner is the author of The Starting School Survival Guide: everything you need to know when your child starts primary school, published by White Ladder and available from bookshops and Amazon.

FAMILIES LEEDS | September/October 2011

In some parts of Europe, children don’t begin school until they are seven years old and still have some of the best academic records in the world. Many British three and four year olds are learning to count, write their name and even do simple addition. Richmond House Headmistress Jane Disley asks if we are pushing our children too much too soon? The National Curriculum’s Early Years Foundation Stage encourages children as young as three to follow an academic framework for their education. This framework has received widespread criticism for being too academic and rigid. At the age of four, I believe many children are ready for the school environment. Interaction with their peers and mental stimulation provided by school can be extremely beneficial, however, I strongly believe that the early years of a child’s education should centre on play, developing social skills and building imaginations and not be focussed on academic goals. As an independent school we have flexibility – we adapt the key learning goals of the Early Years Curriculum whilst ensuring that pupils are allowed to develop their creative flair and imagination through a variety of fun

Are our children starting school too young? activities and play such as PE lessons and play taught by specialist teachers. Getting the right balance between learning and play is essential. An introduction to the three ‘Rs’ is undoubtedly important for three to five year olds but everything should be done in a fun and engaging way to captivate little minds and encourage their curiosity. Through encouraging play in a learning environment, children gain confidence, interact with one another, learn about team work and develop personal skills. These skills are essential for life and, if adopted at an early age, result in self assured, confident individuals and, ultimately, high achievement. Once children have these skills, more academic learning comes naturally. Clearly children develop at different rates and, although the majority of our pupils start nursery

in the term in which they turn three, they can start a little earlier or later if it’s beneficial for the child. Within the same year group there is invariably a broad spectrum of abilities. Small class sizes, additional support teachers and specialist teaching staff allow children’s interests, talents and needs to be easily identified and their teaching structured accordingly. In summary, I believe that giving children challenges, opportunities and new experiences can only be a good thing. What is important is understanding the needs of the individual and ultimately making these early experiences fun and exciting to inspire confidence and creativity and above all ensure that the children are happy and enjoy coming to school. Boost your child’s learning…

{

}

As your child returns to school, it’s time to think about where you can find help, if you need it. Here’s some advice from Kumon who have study centres across Leeds offering after school support in maths and English.

A

T THE START OF A NEW TERM it’s important that your child gets to grips with core subjects and the learning skills vital for academic progression. Kumon’s unique study programmes enable each child to develop not only a strong grounding in maths and English but also fundamental learning skills such as speed, accuracy, time management, concentration and independence in study. As they develop their abilities throughout the year, children grow in confidence and are able to realise their full potential. Manpriya Bhullar is the Instructor at the Alwoodley Kumon Study Centre. She explains,“As our children return to school, we often consider how to best support them in the year ahead. I have received a number of enquiries recently from parents who are concerned that their child is falling behind in school or conversely excelling in their studies and requiring a challenge. Enrolling your child at a Kumon study centre at this time of year is a great way to kick start the new academic year. As the Kumon programmes are tailored to the needs of each individual child they can support children of all ages and abilities. We ultimately aim to nurture

advantage of the two week Free Trial and see how the Kumon method can benefit your child.
