Eat 2 Treat Local Cheam mum, Rachel Slinger is about to launch an exciting new children’s lunchbox with a completely new concept to incentivise and encourage healthy eating. Below she talks about her inspiration for the product. During a trip to the park I had a battle with my three year old niece to try and get her to eat the healthy food in her packed lunch before the two chocolates provided as a ‘treat’ for finishing the healthy food. This gave me the idea for a new type of lunchbox which ‘hides the delights’ until the main food is eaten.

Become a ‘dragonologist’ this summer and discover the newly restored Great Pagoda at Kew This summer, families can embark on a dragon quest around Kew Gardens, becoming ‘dragonologists’ to track down the Great Pagoda’s decorated beasts. To celebrate the restoration of the Great Pagoda at Kew by Historic Royal Palaces, six majestic dragons have descended upon the famous gardens, waiting to be discovered. These large hand-painted sculptures will be hidden in key areas of the 300-acre site, forming a fun family trail in association with BBC’s Blue Peter.

The lunchboxes are sectioned for variety and portion control, with a ‘secret’ bottom layer containing the ‘treats’, which is only revealed once the first layer in finished. When a child eats the healthy food, they collect stars to place these in the lunchbox lid, which doubles up as a reward chart. There are reward magnets, so the child knows what reward they are working towards’’ Visit www.eat2treat.co.uk to register your interest and stay abreast of product release dates.

Mental Health issues starting early One in 10 children aged five to 16 - or three in every classroom - have a diagnosable mental health problem and 75% of mental illness starts before the age of 18 according to statistics.

For more information please visit. www.hrp.org. uk/kew-palace/explore/the-great-pagoda

Place2Be, a national charity providing emotional support to children, advises that it’s never too early or too late to start thinking about your child’s mental health. Some simple actions you can take at any age to help promote positive mental health include: •

Carving out time to be with your child one-to-one. Put other worries to one side and actively listen to them and their feelings.

Enjoying a quiet activity together can make it easier to talk to your child and can encourage your child to open up naturally.

Taking a step back from today’s busy lives and enjoy some dedicated time listening and playing with your child

Creative activities such as art and craft can encourage bonding with your child.

Providing a stable and consistent environment, with clear boundaries helps children feel secure and better able to learn about and cope with the world around them.

Be kind to yourself and look after your own mental health. This will have the most beneficial impact of all on the wellbeing of your child.

Dental Check by Age 1 A recent analysis has found that 80% of children between the ages of 1 and 2 years had not visited an NHS dentist despite guidance saying children should start dental checkups when they develop their first tooth. The analysis by the Faculty of Dental Surgery at The Royal College of Surgeons, also found that 60% of children aged 1 to 4 didn’t have a dental check-up in 12 months. Official Public Health England guidance states that a child should have a check-up as soon as their teeth start to appear at around 6 months of age. NHS dental check-ups for children are free. Early dental visits enable children (as well as parents and carers) to learn about good oral health practice and prevent them from developing a fear of dental visits. A UK wide Dental Check by One #DCby1 campaign has been launched by the British Society for Paediatric Dentistry to increase the number children who access dental care aged 0 to 2 years. Babies visiting the dentist before their 1st birthday will be awarded a #DCby1 Certificate at participating dentists. For more information, visit www.bspd.co.uk/Resources/Dental-Checkby-One

mandatory in June 2020.

The test will be tried out in a sample of schools with it being made available on a voluntary basis to all schools across England from June 2019. It will become

The test has been described by the Government as a 5 minute “onscreen check” which is designed to help ensure children know the multiplication tables up to 12 off by heart and has been designed to avoid causing additional stress for children and teachers. The Government has also said results from the check will not be published at school-level and will not be used by Ofsted and others to force changes in schools. Some teachers’ unions have expressed strong concerns about the introduction of another test being an unnecessary additional burden on schools.

It’s National Mills Weekend 2018! On Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 May, National Mills Weekend takes place across the UK, with more than 300 windmills and watermills opening their doors to the public. This annual festival of our milling heritage is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to explore their local mills. Participating mills include many not normally open to the public, with a range of special events and family-friendly activities. Until the advent of the steam engine, wind and watermills provided the only source of power for many different processes - from making flour, paper and cloth to hammering metal and extracting oils. You can explore mills that produced, or still produce these products, some restored to working order, some derelict, some still working commercially. There are too many to list in your local area, so please visit www. nationalmillsweekend.co.uk for more information.

Croydon High School run the world for Sports Relief Students from GDST schools across the UK took part in a mega roundthe-world challenge in support of Sport Relief. Starting and finishing at Croydon High School they collectively ran the equivalent of the circumference of the earth. Measured at the equator, that is 24,901.461 miles. The original idea came from Croydon High School, in Selsdon, when PE teacher and Head of Upper School, Sue Beck decided Sport Relief 2018 was a great opportunity to harness the spirit and size of the GDST network in support of a fantastic cause. Everyone taking part in the challenge will make a minimum donation of £2 to the charity and any further donations can be accepted until 23 June. All proceeds will go to Sport Relief to help vulnerable people, across the UK and the world to live happier, healthier and safer lives. If anyone would like to donate and support this great cause, please visit www.mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/gdstgirlsruntheworld

Out of School Activities Improve Educational Attainment A study by researchers from NatCen Social Research at Newcastle University has found that children who take part in organised sports and after school clubs can improve primary school academic performance and social skills. The study of 6,400 children in England found that those who took part in organised sports and physical activities at the ages of 5, 7 and 11 were almost one and a half times more likely to reach a higher than expected level in their Key Stage 2 (KS2) maths test at the age of 11. According to the Lead Investigator, Emily Tanner of NatCen said “Results showed that sports clubs were positively associated with attainment outcomes at age 11, even when accounting for prior attainment at age 7.” The research also found that disadvantaged children who attended after-school clubs developed better social, emotional and behavioural skills than those, also from similar social circumstances, who did not. Discovering The

Arts

‘Theatre has the power to transforms lives. It connects and empowers children and young people, develops their skills, confidence and curiosity and vitally, drives imagination and empathy.’ Lisa Burger, NT Executive Director

Let’s Play - the National Theatre’s new national primary school programme designed to transform creativity and theatre-making in schools Let’s Play commissions exciting new plays with songs and music for children aged 4 to 11 to perform. The programme also provides teachers with high quality training and professional development. This is designed to inspire creative learning across the curriculum and to enable the school to involve children in all aspects of planning and creating a theatre production – from performing to designing costumes to operating sound. Developed by professional theatre artists alongside teachers and senior leaders from primary schools across the country, Let’s Play is an ambitious creative learning programme designed to transform creativity and theatre-making in schools. Using a programme of Continued Professional Development and Learning for teachers, specially commissioned plays for children at Key Stage 1 and 2 to perform, and extensive learning resources, Let’s Play inspires learning across the curriculum. The Commons Select Committee on Education has reported that SATS (standardised assessment tests) and the pressure on schools to compete in national league tables has led to a narrowing of the curriculum with a focus on English and maths at the expense of the arts. All children are entitled to a broad and balanced curriculum with a rich arts and cultural education.

Stagecoach Performing Arts turns 30 Students to feature in Guinness World Record attempt Stagecoach Performing Arts schools from the area will participate in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous performance of one show. Celebrating Stagecoach’s 30-year anniversary, students from Stagecoach will join up with schools nationwide and abroad to stage Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Junior. Performing simultaneously at 6pm on 1st July 2018, Stagecoach aims to have 200 of its schools taking part, the world record attempt commemorating three decades of its schools sparking children’s creativity through singing, dancing and acting classes. Upwards of 6,500 children will be involved. Meanwhile, Stagecoach has planned a year-long calendar of exciting opportunities to mark its 30th anniversary milestone, including a special commemorative Charity Gala to award students, nominated by their Principals, for Creative Courage. The Gala will raise funds for YoungMinds, the UK’s leading charity championing the wellbeing and mental health of young people.

As a Speech & Drama teacher, I have discovered that many parents are concerned with the same issue; how to help their child communicate with confidence! LAMDA, founded in 1861, have developed an enviable reputation for delivering excellence in the provision of Communication and Performance examinations. The process of preparing for a LAMDA examination helps learners, to develop a broad range of skills that will serve them throughout life. Across the syllabus, LAMDA examinations develop a learner’s ability to: •

read easily, fluently and with good understanding

expand vocabulary, and powers of self-expression

improve confidence in speaking and listening

memorise and recall information

LAMDA provides opportunities for students to nurture their natural abilities, enhance their self-confidence to engage and contribute fully, whether at school, in work, or in the community. Examinations encourage participants to develop a love of literature, poetry and drama, improving standards of communication through the spoken word. Succeeding in a LAMDA examination demonstrates growth as individuals through participating in a worthwhile activity that is respected as a global standard. Let’s Play is the National Theatre’s commitment to supporting schools across the country and to developing teachers’ skills to ensure that the arts, including drama and theatre, remain a vital part of school life.

Taking place over the 11 – 13 May, the Barnes Children’s Literature Festival and with over sixty events for families to enjoy, there is something on offer for all ages at London’s largest dedicated children’s book festival, including author talks, workshops, story time and craft sessions, music, film and much, much more.
