Supporting a child with maths anxiety
By Catherine Loble and Lisa Wander
From buying a kilo of apples to paying a restaurant bill or making savings, maths is a fact of life.
However, many people see maths as a confusing subject which can lead to maths anxiety. In children, this can impact their academic performance and overall confidence.
By understanding the causes of maths anxiety and implementing supportive strategies, parents can play a crucial role in helping their children develop a positive relationship with maths. Changing the way we think about numbers and remembering that our relationship with maths can grow over time can positively impact self-confidence. Encouragement, patience and a focus on understanding can transform maths from a source of fear to an opportunity for growth and success.
Watch out for any signs that could suggest your child is affected such as avoidance of maths-related activities, negative self-talk or expressions of hopelessness about maths. Teachers might report poor performance on tests and assignments, despite adequate preparation. Stress or panic can bring on headaches or stomach aches, sweating and increased heart rate and may lead to school refusal and separation anxiety.
⏺Lisa and Catherine are co-founders of Emparenting (www.emparenting.co.uk), supporting children, parents and families with the insights, skills and tools needed to nurture the development and well-being of the next generation.
Causes of maths anxiety
∞ Negative experiences from previous failures.
∞ Pressure to perform from parents, teachers, or peers and in exam and test situations within time constraints.
∞ Teaching methods such as rote memorisation, rather than fully understanding concepts.
∞ Lack of confidence where believing one is "bad at maths" can undermine confidence further.
∞ Parents passing on their own lack of confidence in maths.
Strategies for parents
∞ Promote a growth mindset. Remind your child that their ability in maths can and will be improved with practice, positivity and learning from mistakes.
∞ Provide a comfortable space for homework.
∞ Focus on understanding, offering real life examples to explain concepts. Be patient and encouraging.
∞ Have fun with maths games and puzzles. Cooking and shopping naturally incorporate maths.
∞ Praise effort, not just results. Celebrating small successes builds confidence. Praise persistence, not just being right.
∞ Seek help when needed. There are plenty of educational apps and online resources that make learning interactive and explain concepts in different ways. It is also useful to communicate with your child’s teacher to discuss their progress and areas that need support.

Enjoy winter's wonder
By Gemma Hunt
On a gloomy day, it's tempting to stay indoors, but it's so good for kids – and adults – to get outside, spend time in nature, de-stress in the open air and burn off pent-up energy.
But before you open the front door and take that first step into the winter air, here are some ideas to keep everybody warm, dry – and happy.
Wrap up in layers
Dressing in plenty of layers is a great way to keep warm –they trap warm air next to the body and can be added or removed, depending on how your child is feeling. Don’t forget a hat to keep heads warm and a pair of gloves or mittens for chilly hands.
Get active
Doing some exercise will warm you up from the inside out. Whether it’s doing some star jumps, dancing around or, if it’s not slippery underfoot, challenging the children to a running race. Get the heart pumping and you’ll be feeling warm in no time.
Snacks at the ready
Don’t forget to pack some snacks and perhaps a flask of warming hot chocolate for your outdoor adventures this winter. These can help give your little ones the energy and motivation to get outside.
Waterproof and wellies
Winter walks can be mucky walks but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Get your waterproofs and wellies on and have

Stagecoach Highgate and Hampstead Heath celebrates 30 years
As Stagecoach Highgate and Hampstead Heath enters its 30th year, Principal Odette Garvey talks about the journey over the past three decades.
In the beginning
"Stagecoach pioneered the unique formula of an hour of singing, an hour of dance and an hour of drama at the weekends, which proved an instant success and so demand was high. Since then we have trained thousands of children across North London aged 4 to 16," said Odette.
Quality training
Stagecoach has a proven record of quality training in the performing arts with Ofsted awarding its teaching team Outstanding. "Our aim is to provide all our students with skills, not just for the stage, but for life. Many of our students have appeared in West End shows, TV and films and even University Challenge. The life skills they learn are transferable, onstage as well as offstage," Odette added.
A bright future
"The mainstream education system has put the arts at the bottom of the list – and this is where Stagecoach comes in. We are teaching what schools aren't, which are the soft skills needed for life and the workplace. We are teaching them creative courage for life, to inspire the next generation of calm confident leaders."
Book a two-week trial at www.stagecoach.co.uk/highgate or call Odette on 07956 436028.
Education
Counting affects sharing
Young children who are good with numbers are more likely to share valued items with friends. Researchers from universities across the US conducted the groundbreaking research, concluding that counting skills were the single biggest predictor of "fair sharing behaviour" among childen age 3 to 5. www.neurosciencenews.com
Keeping tweens reading
By Tanith Carey
Does it feel like you're fighting a losing battle maintaining your tween’s interest in reading? Does your child always seem more interested in the quick fix of screens than books?
It’s understandable that parents worry. The human brain is wired for novelty and the bright lights and quick rewards of going online can feel immediately gratifying.
But it’s worth persevering. Books are a key way to help your child feel happier and less stressed. A National Literacy Trust survey found that keen readers between the age of 8 and 13 are three times more likely to have higher levels of mental well-being, compared to those who don’t engage with books at all. With books, kids learn to concentrate for longer and improve emotional intelligence as they empathise with the characters.
In a largely digital world, what’s a modern parent to do? As is often the case, part of the answer lies in taking action before your child hits tweenhood.
For ages 2 to 5, try limiting tech learning games to just ONE of your child’s many play options. Preschoolers need to develop their reading brains first.
Modern Approach
After that, help kids become "bilingual". This means providing text both on screen and on the printed page. Point out the difference between accessing information quickly online and deep, concentrated book-reading.
Help children recognise how screens and books make them feel different. For example, help your child notice how video gaming makes them feel tense and jumpy. Then notice how curling up with a good book and being able to take in information at their own pace makes them feel calmer. Make phone-free family time a treat. For example, hold a phone amnesty where you ALL go to a café for a hot chocolate with your favourite books for half an hour’s reading When kids realise how good books can make them feel and how they bond you together, it marks the start of a life-long habit.
Engaging tweens further
Let them choose. While it’s tempting to encourage your children to read the classics you loved when you were little, let your child follow their own interests and get excited about a new book, whether it’s from the library or a bookshop.
Go exploring together. Thanks to the internet, our children have never read more words or had access to more experiences. They can now browse through hundreds of websites every day and search any subject that interests them in seconds.

CFBL head nurtures success and happiness
David Gassian, Headteacher of Collège Français Bilingue de Londres, tells how bilingualism grows children's world view and explains that partnership with parents is essential for well-being and success.
How would the students from the school describe you?
I hope they would describe me first and foremost as someone who is always available for them. Then I think they'd say that I'm fair in the decisions I take. Those who know me a little better know that I like to chat and joke with the students. Some of them also know that I like to bake, including for the teachers and students.
MONDAY - FRIDAY | 08 00-18 00
@andisnursery
Andis Nursery 077 0967 5343
What are you most proud of achieving at the school? I was lucky enough to join CFBL as a teacher when it was created in 2011, and it's a unique opportunity in a professional career to be involved in the creation of a new school. So I'm very attached to this school. My main source of pride is that I've helped to build CFBL’s excellent reputation.
How do you think a head can make a difference to a pupil?
Every year, I see students leave CFBL at the end of Year 10 and most of them I've known for 10 years! When I meet a student, I always say hello and try to say their name. I think that makes a real difference, because that way everyone knows that they are not just another student in my eyes.
How do you hope to involve parents and carers in their child’s education?
Partnership with parents is an essential principle in education. The best way to do this is for parents and teachers to work hand in hand. This means listening and communicating well, and sharing common values and actions. First and foremost, this means not waiting for a pupil to run into problems before worrying about his or her well-being or results. Positive discussion when everything is going well is undoubtedly the best way to prepare for any difficulties that may arise.
What can a child from a non-bilingual household gain from the school?
Children from non-bilingual homes have a rightful place in our school. In particular, they will find a form of openness to the world linked to the plural linguistic and cultural identity of our pupils and teaching staff. Accepting other people's differences is a major key to happiness and success and we believe that CFBL offers this openness to all its pupils, whatever their linguistic background. Naturally, any family interested in CFBL will have to show some interest in the French language, but every year we welcome pupils, particularly in nursery, for whom French is not the language of reference, and everything goes very well!
Role model, not moderator
By Hannah Brencher
When I decided to unplug from technology for one thousand hours over the course of a year, I saw it as a challenge to reclaim my time and relieve the constant barrage of notifications. What I didn’t anticipate was how profoundly a digital detox would transform my approach to motherhood.
When I started this experiment, my daughter was just over a year old and already reaching for my phone. Who could blame her? My husband and I were constantly checking our devices in front of her. What message was she receiving and was it a positive one?
I know my daughter will grow up in a world teeming with technology. As her first teacher, it's my responsibility to model healthy behaviours and demonstrate the importance of being truly present. Could I set healthier boundaries for my own screen use and become a role model not just a moderator? So, I put my phone away and made a conscious effort to show up fully for her.
Author Hannah Brencher
15 minutes spent on a puzzle was enough for us to feel truly connected. And not once did I walk away without feeling grateful for the choice to connect with her more deeply.

Your Christmas stocking A few home truths
When growing families need more room, building into the loft can be a sound investment, as well as a cost-effective lifestyle improvement. So how do you find someone to trust with your home, what questions should you ask and what is it reasonable to expect?
Luke Murphy from Lilywood Lofts, pictured, says the opinion of a previous client is vital:
“Before we take a deposit for a job, we invite people to see a recent job or speak to a previous customer on the phone, and we’ll try to make sure the referee is “traceable”, an accountant, lawyer, teacher or similar.”
What to ask a referee:
Was the firm considerate, respectful and tidy?
“We talk through every decision with the customer so there are no surprises. We tidy up at the end of the day and are considerate about behaviour around families.”
Did they schedule a “snagging” visit?
“We go back six weeks later to pick up any snags – small things that need finishing off.”
How long did the job take?
“We recognise that people want the work done and they want their home back. With our jobs, it’s between six and eight weeks and the job’s wrapped up and the scaffold’s down.”
Is it quality work as well as affordable?
“We’re not aiming for a finish that is “a pass”. We’re aiming for a recommendation off of every loft we do. About 80 per cent of work we do is on recommendation.”
Who actually did the work?
“Some firms have a salesmen who will sell the loft, then they’ll get a guy in, who is a subcontractor of a subcontractor. It may depend on how he feels that day as to whether he does a good job. With Lilywood, the customer knows what they are getting. I aim to be on site 75 per cent of the time, and most of the time during the build stage. We make sure the customer gets a very good service out of us.”
Luke had some final advice:
Look through the quote. Does it include everything you want?
“Does the quotation include all the sockets you need in a room, or all the lights, especially if you are installing spotlights? Some builders give a lower quote but miss out elements that you need or are going to want to add later. Some firms give quotations without visiting the property, yet that property may need upgraded fire doors to pass building regulations. Our quotations are thoughtful, comprehensive and transparent.”

Fussy eating and neurodiversity
By Ellie Malt
Short phases of fussy eating and avoiding new foods are very common in childhood. But if your child’s picky eating persists, it could be a sign of a neurodiverse brain type such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or attention deficit disorder (ADHD).
Understanding the connections between neurodiversity and eating problems can help you decide what to do.
Constipation
Although surveys on gastrointestinal symptoms in children with ASD and ADHD are inconsistent, one study of 120 children with ASD1 found nearly all had constipation. The pain of regular constipation can lead to negative associations with eating.
The gut
Children with neurodiversity are more likely to have guts with structural differences – a reduced ability to push food through, a slow gut, or the intestine wall can fail to keep food molecules in, a leaky gut. A US study2 suggested children with ASD and ADHD may have differences in gut bacteria, leading to altered immune responses.
Food intolerances
Growing anecdotal evidence indicates that children with ASD and ADHD are more likely to have lactose and casein intolerances, and gluten intolerances. Despite a lack of largescale studies, a small survey of parents of autistic children in England showed a fifth had tried a gluten and/or milk-free diet and a majority reported improvements in their child’s wellbeing.
Sensory processing
Children with ASD or ADHD feel overloaded by sensory stimuli. A heightened sensory awareness to texture, taste and smell can make certain foods intolerable, leading to a more restricted diet with a preference for predictability and comfort.
Sensitivity to sound (misophonia)
Children with neurodivergence are more likely to be sensitive to specific sounds, such as chewing or swallowing, making mealtimes stressful and unpleasant. This can lead them to avoid eating certain textures or eating in social settings.
Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID)
ARFID, a recognised eating disorder, is characterised by extremely selective eating habits without an underlying medical condition. A study of 600 children in Sweden with ARFID3 is one of the most recent to have highlighted the overlap between eating disorders and neurodiverse conditions including tic disorder, ADHD and ASD.

Practical steps
Occupational therapy: Engage a therapist to help your child become more comfortable with different foods.
Behavioural interventions: Use positive reinforcement and gradual exposure.
Involvement: Involve your child in meal planning and preparation.
Consult a healthcare provider: Gastrointestinal problems may be affecting your child’s eating habits.
Sound sensitivity: Noise-cancelling headphones or background music can help manage sensitivity to eating sounds. Consult allergists or dietitians: Explore testing for food intolerances and develop a dietary plan.
Juggling parenting and work
By Catherine Oliver
Juggling parenting and work is hard. It can often feel like you’re stumbling from one mini drama to the next, wondering when your colleagues’ patience might run out... Sound familiar?
While there’s no magic wand, there are good strategies. Start by looking for patterns. Think of regular pinch points such as no plan B when your childcare breaks down, weekly meetings that regularly run over or being too preoccupied to focus on work. Once you’ve identified these, try to take a step back and look for the small changes you could make. Have a plan B ready, especially if your child is sniffling and it’s likely you’ll get "that call". One strategy is to spend five minutes each weekend talking through your week with your partner, discussing who could be available if things go wrong on which day. If that’s not an option, having a list of people you can call on – family, friends or even paid help (nursery
Top tips for juggling parenting and work
Update your plan B for childcare breakdowns weekly Don't apologise for being a parent – ever. Share your challenges with your colleagues.
Be clear on your boundaries. If you need to be home by a set time, that's non-negotiable. If there are exceptions, be clear what they are. Key to this is not saying "yes" to extra work straight away. Reflect. Is extra work core to your role or would someone else be better placed to do it? Does it have to be done now?
Done is better than perfect. To the perfectionists out there, prioritise. Think about what you're really being asked and get that job done. It can often be more straightforward than you think.
Decide on your priorities. Whether that's making the school play, doing school drop offs or completing project X (most likely all of the above). If you're clear on what matters to you, you can build a plan around that.
staff are often up for extra hours), means you can go from panic to action very quickly.
Build in transition time. If you have control of your diary, 30 minutes of "transition time" at the start and end of each day can be really helpful, especially when you’re on drop off or pick up. To make this work, don’t schedule anything for the first and last half an hour of your working day. This provides a buffer if the traffic is bad or your child is having a meltdown at drop off. A few minutes together without stress will mean the difference between you leaving them crying versus happy. And ditto at pick up. If your last meeting runs over, you won’t be clock watching.
Talking to your manager/colleagues
What if you don’t have control of your diary or worry about pushing your luck with your team? If you are worried about the latter, ask yourself, where’s the evidence? Has anyone said something to you? Becoming a working parent is a tough transition. We no longer have the same flexibility to work late that we had before. It can take time to get used to that and not feel the need to apologise for being a parent.
If there are issues or you think there might be, talk to your manager or colleagues. This gives you a chance to deal with them together. Explain the challenges you’re facing. It may well be that these won’t even have occurred to them. While you can’t usually change your childcare timing, it might be possible to change the time of a meeting, your working hours or your workload. Ask what would it take to make this work? And keep checking in to make sure it’s still working.
