Don’t take those flags down just yet! After a rather soggy Jubilee our summer of celebration continues with the arrival of the Olympic torch relay in the Thames Valley. Find out when and where you can see it on page 30. To keep your own little budding Olympians on track why not sign them up for a sports course over the holidays? As well as football, tennis and swimming we’ve got pages of day camps, performing arts workshops and arty fun for all ages. And with the British weather being as unpredictable as ever, we’ve come up with a few ideas for entertaining the children come rain or shine – and many of them are free. Here at Families Thames Valley West we are having a little celebration of our own - this is our 10th birthday issue. We would like to take the opportunity to say a big thank you to all the readers, advertisers and distributers who have helped to make Families such a popular and successful magazine. Have a fantastic summer of sun and sport. Karen and Jane

Mummy’s Maid Mummy’s Maid is celebrating two years of providing short and long term household help, cleaning and childcare for busy mums in the local area. The business is going from strength to strength, says founder Kez Luckett. “2011 was a fantastic year for us, we were nominated for several awards including the Mum and Working Awards and were finalists in the Nectar Business Small Business Awards in their start-up of the year category.” So what has made Mummy’s Maid so popular? Trends in Tutoring One of Britain’s leading tutoring service providers, Fleet Tutors, has noted a growing trend for coaching both for the 11+ grammar school entrance test and for preparatory school entrance exams. Recent results show that over 80% of students exceeded their predicted scores in public exams when a reputable tuition provider is commissioned. Fleet Tutors offer intensive, small group courses in various subjects. Students experience fast paced and focused progress with the vast majority achieving an increase of at least 1 grade. They share the invaluable resource of an expert subject tutor and the benefit of having questions answered immediately, yet course fees are considerably less than most one-to-one sessions. Summer courses will be held in West London and Farnborough, Hampshire. For further information and bookings call 0208 580 3911 or 0845 644 5452 or email Clientsupport@fleet-tutors.co.uk
Exams brought forward This autumn sees important changes being made to the timing of grammar school entrance exams. This will affect children who are about to go into year 6 and who wish to apply for either Reading or Kendrick Schools. Both these state schools are selective and require prospective students to sit an entrance exam. This year, for the first time, children will sit these tests and get the results before the deadline for submitting secondary school preference forms, thus enabling parents to make a more informed choice. In effect this brings the testing process forward by about six weeks. An application to sit the exam must be made to the relevant school by 24 September 2012 with the exams being held on 1 October. Reading School has an Open Afternoon on 4 July with an address from the Principal at 2pm followed by school tours. No booking is necessary. Kendrick School has their next Open day on 5 July from 4.30-6.30pm. Please book a place by emailing admin@kendrick.reading.sch.uk For more information visit www.reading-school.co.uk or www.kendrick.reading.sch.uk

In a recent survey 16% of those who were aware of ISAs said the reason they haven’t invested is because they find it confusing. But this doesn’t have to be the case. With the help of a financial advisor even the most inexperienced investor can gain a clear understanding of this valuable allowance and how to build a cohesive and coherent ISA portfolio with the potential to achieve your long-term financial objectives. The key is diversification. This means spreading your investments across a range of different assets to reduce the impact of any one falling in value and to stand a better chance of achieving more consistent returns. The choice though is potentially bewildering. There are around 2,500 retail funds in the UK into which investors can invest their stocks & shares ISA allowance. Faced with the challenge of finding the right one, it’s easy to see why some base their decision on the most impressive advert or the best past performance. Yet it is a decision that’s important to get right. Whatever an investor’s objective - whether to provide a retirement income, build a lump sum or a combination of both – it is vital that investments work together. Regularly reviewing your portfolio is an important discipline to help achieve this goal. An annual inspection is adequate for most and will identify the strong (and weaker) performers but, fundamentally, investors should be asking one key question: is this portfolio still working to achieve my objectives? Conducting a regular review will ensure you are on track. Whether your portfolio needs a small tweak in one or two areas or a complete overhaul, by working together with your advisor, the process for getting your portfolio back on the right course can be a simple and cost-effective one. News & Views mums in business... Alison Whistler fulfilled her teenage ambition of becoming a solicitor and loves her current job as Director of Family Law. She combines working with family life and believes that being a good listener is a vital skill in this busy role. Who are you and where do you live? My name is Alison Whistler and I live in Mortimer, Berkshire with my husband and two daughters aged seven and five.
What do you do?
I’m Director of Family Law at B legal solicitors based in Marlow. I’m a family solicitor, which means that I help clients sort out legal issues connected to the breakdown of their relationship, such as divorce, financial negotiations and children’s arrangements.
What did you used to do? I’ve always wanted to be a Family lawyer from the age of about 16 when I had work experience in a solicitor’s office. I qualified as a solicitor in 1996 and after two years of training I started to specialise solely in Matrimonial and Family Law.
Britain’s leading National Physical Play Programme Classes in Winnersh, Woodley, Wokingham, Finchampstead, Reading

I’ve always been very empathic and had a strong sense of right and wrong. I find it very rewarding to help people overcome incredibly stressful situations. I learnt early on in my career that the practical advice that I give to clients can be just as important as the legal advice that I can offer. I’ve always been a good listener and over the years I’ve also learnt how vital good communication is, not only between solicitor and client but also between husband and wife.
What are your plans for the future? I’m also the Marketing Director at B Legal and I’m currently reviewing and updating B Legal’s marketing plan. I have a particular focus this year on client care as part of that strategy, and I am looking into how this can be improved. Whilst traditionally appointments with solicitors are office based, we are now looking at offering clients a choice of alternative venues and flexible appointment times, which may be particularly attractive to busy working parents. We are also looking for opportunities to grow the company, so 2013 is certainly looking very busy for me at the moment!
Career with NCT by Joanna Parry Would you like to train as a practitioner with NCT? The University of Worcester and NCT have joined forces to provide university-accredited training for those wanting to support parents on their journey from pregnancy to parenthood. Admissions have just opened for this new course, which offers a flexible training, perfect for anyone considering a change to a more family-friendly career or looking to return to work after having a baby. With tutorials across the UK and study days hosted regionally, students can complete the majority of their studies without travelling to Worcester. So, if you’re looking for a rewarding job you can fit around your family, becoming an NCT practitioner could be just the thing. www.nct.org.uk/nct-college

Making your own fun at home
Polarn O Pyret
One of the dubious delights of living in this country is the unpredictability of our weather a perfect sunny day can swiftly be followed by monsoon-like rain. So, for when you have a tribe of bored children to entertain, here are a few suggestions for bad weather days and over the page we’ve got some great ideas for when the sun does come out!
With a bit of imagination and enthusiasm you can have a fun-packed day without even leaving the house. Here are a few suggestions. Come Dine With Me: Get the children to plan and create a meal. This can be as simple (think baked potatoes with various toppings) or elaborate (three courses with menus and after-dinner entertainment) as they like. Get the whole family involved and have a Come Dine With Me type competition spread over the holidays. Older children can film the process and make score cards for marking the meals. Give help to little ones and make sure the film-maker is the only person to know the result until the final film is shown. Make slime: Mix cornflour, water and food colouring to concoct a gungey slime that children will love running their fingers through. Make it into a game by hiding tiny dinosaurs in it. Just make sure you put down plenty of newspaper! Treasure Hunts: Provide some treasure, a bag of chocolate coins always go down well, and let your children hide it in as cunning a place as possible. Then get them to plan a treasure hunt for you to follow with each clue leading to the location of the next. Clues could be simple pictures drawn by younger children, or cryptic rhymes concocted by crafty older ones. Alternatively, they might prefer to draw a treasure map or hide individual letters around the house
which, when found and re-arranged, spell the treasure’s location. Just make sure you share out the treasure when you find it! Make your own playdough: Mix 1 cup flour, ½ cup salt, 1 cup warm water, 2 tsp cream of tartar and 1tbsp cooking oil in a saucepan. Add food colouring and/ or ‘smellies’ such as vanilla or mint essence. Cook over a medium heat for a few minutes until it becomes stiff. Allow to cool then knead till smooth. If you want a variety of colours then make a larger amount, divide the dough up, and add the colourings at the kneading stage. Store in an airtight container in the fridge. Have an indoor picnic: Who says picnics have to be outdoors? Get the children to draw some pictures of a sun and some fluffy clouds to stick on the wall while you pack the picnic basket. Then just lay your rugs on the floor and enjoy your sandwiches without having to worry about flies and ants. Even more fun is building a den, try draping blankets over the table or between chairs, and then eating inside.
A wide range of Bouncy Castles, Slides, Soft Play, Go Karts and Sumo Suits for hire 364 days a year! For Indoor and Outdoor use.

Sunny Days... 50 Things to do before you’re 11¾ The National Trust recently produced a list of 50 outdoor things that all children should do before they reach the age of 11¾. Designed to get kids off the sofa and into the great outdoors, the ‘must-do’ activities range from climbing a tree and skimming stones to bouldering and geocaching. A few are seasonal, such as picking blackberries and going sledging, but there are plenty of easy ones to get you started. A new interactive website www.50things.org.uk allows children to log in and tick off the activities that they have accomplished

Summer Fun Cool Camping Summer is the time hardy campers hose down their tents and head for the open road in search of the perfect pitch. In fact camping has become one of the most popular forms of British holiday, with nights under canvas overtaking stays in B&B’s for the first time. However there are campsites and there are campsites! To avoid ending up on an 18-30’s version, complete with night-long partying, make sure you do your research before setting out. A good start is to pick up the latest edition of Cool Camping: Kids. There are 75 campsites reviewed, all chosen for their child-friendly appeal, and with lots of practical information, such as nearby things to do and places to eat. There are also useful tips on wet weather fun, cutting the clutter and how to get a lie-in. Find out more including lots of campsite reviews at www.coolcamping.co.uk
And if you’re not sure what the weather is going to do!

Parenting
Taming tantrums The biscuit breaks and your two year old screws up his eyes, opens his mouth and wails loudly. I remember situations like this with my son – there I would be, trying to piece the broken biscuit back together, whilst attempting to explain as best I could to my wailing toddler without going into the laws of physics, that it really was still the same biscuit… to no avail. His wild demonstrations of fury and tragedy would continue unabated. Research has demonstrated that tantrums appear to have a pattern and rhythm to them, no matter what the cause or how long they go on for. The paediatric neurologist Potegal and his team developed a ‘onesie’ with an inbuilt microphone and analysed in detail the sounds or ‘vocalisations’ toddlers make during the course of a tantrum. It had previously been assumed that tantrums have two main phases; ‘anger’ (yelling, screaming, bashing and throwing things), followed by ‘sadness’ (crying and whimpering). However the researchers found that these phases were intertwined. It seems that sad sounds tended to occur throughout tantrums; superimposed on them were sharp peaks of yelling and screaming – anger. Potegal suggests that the quickest way to end the tantrum is to get the child past the ‘peaks of anger’. What is left is the sadness,

Tantrums – sometimes it’s just the way the cookie crumbles … by Dr Clare Bailey
and sad children tend to reach out for comfort. The quickest way to help your child to get over the anger phase is to do nothing. (Clearly my attempts to explain the physics of broken biscuits had been getting us nowhere). Of course a
child in this state is unable to process anything beyond his overwhelming fury and distress. As Potegal says, ‘There’s an anger trap. Even asking questions can prolong the anger — and the tantrum.’ So this means parents are best
not engaging with their child, other than keeping them safe, during the anger phase. During this time, ideally the parent needs to appear ‘neutral’, by not making contact with their child and not talking to them, until they have calmed down enough and can be comforted. This is a form of ‘time out to calm down’, with the parents watching for the moment when their child moves to the sadness phase, at which point they can reach out to give comfort and a cuddle. Being aware of this can give back a sense of control to parents in a stressful situation. Be aware that you sometimes need a brief ‘Time Out’ to calm down too. Some parents even manage a ‘Time Out Together’, so they can be a calming presence yet not get caught up in managing the tantrum until their child is settling. Lots of broken biscuits later, and after helping many parents who are struggling with their child’s tantrums, I can see that it really helps to recognise and understand the anger and sadness phases. A parent who can remain calm and then re-engage with their toddler (or teenager!) with warmth and positive attention is also likely to enjoy their child more. Dr Clare Bailey from Parenting Matters will be running a series of evening Interactive Parenting Seminars in the autumn. Parenting Matters also provides individual consultations held by phone or face-to-face and presentations in schools. To find out more please call 01494 677575 or go to www.parentingmatters.co.uk

Day 53 - Tuesday 10 July
Day 54 - Wednesday 11 July
After leaving Oxford the flame is carried through Wallingford and Nettlebed to reach Henley just after 9am. The relay procession will travel from A4130 Northfield End through the town to Mills Meadows. From here the torch will be carried in a rowing boat up the River Thames to the 1908 and 1948 Olympic finish line before coming ashore at the Leander Club. Sir Steve Redgrave is expected to carry the torch for part of the Henley route. The relay then travels on to Bisham Abbey, Maidenhead, Dorney Lake, Slough, Windsor and Egham before arriving at Ascot at around 4.20pm. Here it will be paraded down the High Street before being taken around the racecourse on horseback. The flame arrives in Bracknell at about 5.30pm and will be carried along London Road, Millennium Way and Skimped Hill Lane before departing by convoy to Reading. The Reading leg sets off at 6.14pm from Sutton Seeds roundabout, along London Road to The Oracle Riverside. To celebrate the torch’s arrival, The Oracle will be hosting an afternoon of free family activities from 12 noon, with craft workshops and human statues. To end the day, the torch will be transported to the Madejski Stadium for about 7pm where a torchbearer will light a cauldron as the highlight of the town’s evening celebration event.
The flame departs from the picturesque surroundings of Caversham Court, in Reading, at 8am to travel alongside the River Thames, through Christchurch Meadows, before being carried into the town centre for a second time and paraded along Broad Street. After a journey around South Reading, the relay departs from Castle Hill down the A4 to the BP garage at Calcot. It then travels in convoy to Theale where it will be carried down the High Street, just after 10am, and then on again to a procession through Thatcham. Torchbearers, including the TV presenter Clare Balding, will carry the flame through Newbury town centre. The final local leg will be at Pinchington Lane finishing about midday before the torch continues on to end the day in Salisbury. Street entertainment is planned in Parkway and elsewhere in the town before and after the relay. In Market Place, there will be a demonstration by BMX Team Extreme and a ‘cultural village’ is to be staged in Victoria Park. The exact route is available at www.london2012.com/torch-relay/route
