Downton star’s plea for local children’s charity Actress Joanna Froggatt who plays Anna May Bates in the popular ITV drama Downton Abbey is calling for people to donate as much as they can to Rosie’s Rainbow Fund. She says, “I am proud to be a patron of Rosie’s Rainbow fund, which is an incredible local children’s charity doing vital work with children suffering from serious and terminal illnesses and disabilities. The fund not only supports these children but also their families.” “Rosie’s Rainbow fund has been in place for ten years to help support families at the most testing times of their lives. When long stays in hospital and constant care are a necessity the fund helps provide respite care, music therapy for children and therapy and support for their parents. Unfortunately our charity is at risk as funds are sadly lacking. Please, please dig deep and help us, to help support these families.” The charity was set up in 2003 following the tragic death of 11 year old Rosie Mayling. Rosie

suffered from vasculitis, a rare disease affecting the blood vessels, and it was her wish to help children in hospital. The charity, which this year marks its 10th anniversary, has been a lifeline for thousands of sick children and distressed parents. It provides music therapy for very ill children in hospitals in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire and vital support for the parents of children who are undergoing lengthy hospital stays. It also funds bereavement support for parents who have lost their child. Why not hold a bake sale or sponsored walk or ask your school or workplace to make Rosie’s Rainbow Fund their charity for 2014? Share your fundraising ideas on their Facebook page or check out their website www.rosiesrainbowfund.co.uk You can donate through JustGiving or VirginGiving or in whatever way you can.

Safer streets for Reading children Reading’s first Play Streets are now up and running with local children able to enjoy traffic-free play in their own road. Seven streets have successfully applied to take advantage of Reading Borough Council’s new Play Streets scheme which allows local communities to temporarily close residential streets so that children can play safely outdoors and close to home. It also offers adults the opportunity to get to know their neighbours. The council is trialing the scheme for a year and if it proves to be a success, the initiative may become a permanent fixture in the town. Play Street applications were open to people who live on residential streets only and applicants needed supporting signatures from around two-thirds of residents who live on the street for their bids to be considered. A Play Street can be created for up to three hours, on any day of the week, and up to once every fortnight. Successful Play Street applications have been submitted by Lorne Street, South View Avenue, Blenheim Road, Larkswood Close, St Peter’s Road, School Terrace and Talfourd Avenue.

Mums in Business

Seven steps to being your own boss So you’ve had your light bulb moment – you’ve spotted a gap in the market – a product or service that no one can live without. But how do you get from the excitement of your new idea to the nuts and bolts of building your own business? The rising cost of childcare and the struggling economy has made the idea of being your own boss even more appealing. We all long for the flexibility and freedom that comes with working for ourselves but don’t be fooled, starting a business from home is not the easy option and comes with its own challenges. Fiona Clark, founder of Inspired Mums, gives her seven steps for setting up your own business to help keep you on track…

1. Love what you do It sounds obvious but being your own boss takes up a lot of time and energy. You really have to love what you do - otherwise it’s easy to resent the time it takes away from your family. Enthusiasm is contagious – if you are passionate about your business others will be too! As Richard Branson says “The best advice I could give anyone is to spend your time working on whatever you are passionate about in life.”

2. Research, research and more research You’re so busy dreaming of being the next Anita Roddick or Martha Lane Stewart that it’s very tempting to rush ahead and miss out the research stage. Don’t do it – take the time to research your target market, competitors and pricing. For some people, this may feel like the “dull” part of setting up your own business, but it’s actually one of the most important It will save you lots of time in the long run - making sure your business has a real chance of success from day one.

3. Write a business plan Once all your research is finished, put everything together in a proper business plan. If you’re not sure where to begin, check out www.gov.uk/writebusiness-plan for their guide on this. A well-written business plan with a list of goals and objectives will help keep you focused and on track. It also adds to your credibility if you are marketing your business to other people. Finally, it is a powerful way of doublechecking that your business is financially viable.

4. Perfect your elevator pitch An elevator pitch is a quick, compelling introduction to your business. It should only last about 30 seconds but it needs to make you stand out from the crowd and capture your audience’s attention. You need to explain what is unique about you and your offering and how it can benefit others. Your pitch should be relaxed and conversational – I highly recommend practicing it until it’s fluent and natural. Don’t forget it’s all about communicating your passion so remember the importance of your body language and tone of voice. PAGE 6

Thames Valley West

5. Harness the power of networking Lots of people find networking intimidating at first, deciding who to contact and how can feel overwhelming. However, it can also be rewarding and fun, even if it’s outside your comfort zone. Networking is a powerful way to get your business out into the market. Join local networking groups, visit trade shows and conferences and you’ll find you get more and more confident about telling your story. With the advent of social media, you need to think creatively about networking and its many different forms. Use social media such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter to reach potential customers and to learn more about what your competitors are doing. Finally don’t overlook the power of your local network at the school gate – the more people who know what you do, the better - don’t forget Mums love helping each other.

6. Surround yourself with great support When you’ve been used to the wide range of resources available in a larger company or organisation, working for yourself can seem lonely at first. Be realistic about what you can and can’t do on your own and get support when you need it. It may be an accountant to help with the financial

side of your business, a marketing professional to advise you on branding or a coach to help you build your business. It’s very difficult to be an expert in all areas - understand your key strengths and work on your areas for development with help from others. It may be that you need to invest in childcare or extra help around the house to allow you to focus on your business without constant interruptions!

7. Keep persevering! Finally, no one builds a business overnight – there will definitely be highs and lows. Resilience is a key trait of the most successful people – you have to be optimistic even when there are set backs, as Steve Jobs CEO of Apple said: “I am convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non successful ones is pure perseverance.” Inspired Mums offers a full range of support for mums who want to start their own business or to take their business to the next level, including practical advice and emotional support. Parenting Christmas parties and family gettogethers at this time of the year can be very difficult for shy children. The good news is that there are lots of practical things that can gently encourage them to be more outgoing. Elisabeth Dolton tells us how we can help.

Helping your child overcome shyness

Mixing in society

Taking trays of nibbles round guests, being photographer at a family occasion, going into a shop and asking for the price are all great ways to take their mind off their shyness. But don’t force them into doing things that make them uncomfortable, play to their strengths. Your child’s shyness will vanish if he is encouraged to get better at things he already excels at. Above all, being calm will soothe many a shy child. Relax Kids (www.relaxkids.com) sell a range of CDs that provide ‘chill skills’ that relax children and as a result boosts their confidence.

Start by inviting one friend over for half an hour at home, then moving to more friends, more time and then outside the home. Children learn social skills from watching others so model the kind of interactions you want to encourage: be warm and friendly with people you don’t know, introduce yourself to new people, ask people for help, and compliment friends.

Drama queens (and kings) Shyness doesn’t necessarily mean low selfesteem; it usually comes from fear or feeling worried about what other people think. Simple acting techniques from drama classes soon equip children with the ability to express themselves more clearly in front of others. Equally, presenting ourselves in a confident manner by sitting up straight and making eyecontact, even when we don’t feel like it, will make any child feel bolder because of the positive way others will react to them.

Our attitude is crucial

Facing up to it Perhaps the most effective way to help your child to be less shy is to talk openly with them about it. Refer to situations that are daunting and empathise “sometimes I feel worried about speaking up at work, but I always make an effort and feel good afterwards”. A good starting point is reading books together that have themes of facing fears or overcoming challenges.

Dress Rehearsal Watch what situations trigger shyness in your child then role play them later at home, giving hints on how they can feel more courageous when next out in public. For instance if your child feels nervous going to birthday parties, set up a party scene at home, using his favourite toys and act out the different scenarios: giving the party boy their present; saying hello to other children;

asking the adult where the toilet is; saying thank you on leaving. A karaoke machine or sing along DVD will encourage your child to be more adventurous with their speech and movement. Record them pretending to be a news reader, or presenter interviewing their ‘celebrity’ friend.

Lights, camera, action Trying new activities in a gradual way helps overcome shyness. Encourage your child to try out new things, such as joining a football team or dance class.

We all want our children to outgrow their shyness and latest research indicates that how parents respond to shyness is what makes the difference. Labelling our child as ‘shy’ should certainly be discouraged; they often turn into self fulfilling prophecies. In the same sense, we should always avoid dismissing any feelings of shyness e.g. “don’t be silly, big boys don’t get shy”. Comments like this lead children to feel that their worries are not valid, leading to anxiety. Be supportive by combining empathy with confident assertions, “I can see you’re feeling a bit worried, but I’m really confident you’ll be able to handle it”. A child’s ability to comfortably relate to a wide variety of people is one of the most important ingredients to happiness and success. The thing to remember is that the majority of children will find their way through all of this with a bit of guidance, and will soon be waving their hands in the air to answer questions, belting out songs during group sing-a-longs and being the first in the queue for trying new things.

WHERE AWE AND WONDER ARE PART OF THE CURRICULUM Open a World of Possibility!

Enabling Every Child to Be the Best They Can Be

Delivering a creative experience, sporting prowess and academic excellence.

Healthy lu Local nutrition expert the Lunchbox Doctor, Jenny Tschiesche, gives Families some advice on how to create a delicious, healthy and balanced lunch for your child. According to research just one per cent of lunchboxes in the UK meet the nutritional standards for school lunches. Why is this? Well is seems our lunchboxes lack variety. In fact whole food groups are missing – most commonly vegetables and fruit, but sometimes protein too. Conquering unhealthy lunches is key to making sure our children become healthy adults, childhood obesity is on the increase and currently 30% of all children aged 2 to 15 are considered obese. There are six components to the nutritionally balanced lunchbox. These are carbohydrate, protein, calcium, vegetable, fruit and a drink. If each of these groups is represented in your child’s lunchbox then it is balanced. Here are my top tips to achieving a healthy lunch without breaking the bank:

1. Carbohydrate

We strive to develop confidence, provide opportunity and realise potential in every child

• Invest in a good thermos container that can keep food warm. It means that you can be a lot more adventurous with your food. The foods below can be good served hot or cold. • Make leftover risotto into balls, cover in beaten egg and breadcrumbs then gently sauté in olive oil. • Use old bread to make into croutons for soup or breadcrumbs for covering chicken or fish before baking. These nuggets or fingers work well with low sugar ketchup. • Stir garlic, cream cheese and some peas or sweetcorn in to warm pasta.

2. Protein • Go to the deli counter and buy the ‘cuts’ - the odd-shaped pieces that get left and are lower in cost simply because they look less perfect than other pieces. • Use beans, lentils and chickpeas as an addition to a salad, in soups or to make delicious dips (you can also sprout many beans, which are great in salads). • Rather than buy processed meat slices, cut slices from the left over Sunday roast.

3. Calcium • Buy large pots of natural yogurt (which is full of calcium) and divide into small reusable pots with a topping of honey, agave, sugar-free jam, muesli and frozen or fresh fruit. • Budget hummus typically contains less tahini (the expensive ingredient) and more chickpeas (the cheaper ingredient) and yet is no less nutritious. • Tinned salmon or sardines both make great calcium-rich sandwich fillings.

Jenny is the author of an award-winning book called ‘Not Just Sandwiches – 5 ways to improve your child’s lunchbox’ which is available on Amazon. One of the chapters of the book, and the area of lunchbox preparation that she is most often asked about, is preparing a healthy lunchbox on a budget.

unches on a budget 4. Fruit • Buy local and in season, if possible, to reduce the loss of nutrients through transporting fruit over long distances. • Use tinned fruit in fruit juice, not syrup alone, or with natural yogurt. • Frozen fruit is a cheaper way to enjoy nutrient-rich berries and tropical fruit such as mango all year round. Add to smoothies, use in baking or enjoy with natural yogurt.

5. Vegetables • Frozen Mediterranean vegetables such as peppers are sweet and succulent once roasted. Add to pasta or rice for a tasty main course for lunch. • Root vegetables in season are a great basis for a quick and easy coleslaw or raw-slaw. Simply grate or use a ribbon peeler and add salad cream or vinaigrette dressing. • A large jar of black olives can go a long way. Use on pizzas, fill with cream cheese using an icing bag, serve as part of a salad or whizz into a paste with herbs and olive oil to go onto pasta.

6. Drink • Good old tap water will suffice in a water bottle that you clean out regularly using hot soapy water. • Cartons of milk provide both hydration and calcium. • If you opt for a carton of juice avoid cartons labelled as ‘fruit drink’. Preferably go for fresh fruit juice or juice ‘from concentrate’. Concentrate simply means that the water from the fruit was removed at source for cheaper transportation. Parenting

One of my daughters is disgruntled. I am, she says, a bad mother. “Other mums support their children,” she says. “When they have a problem, the mums go into school to talk to the teachers. You never do that.” She’s not entirely correct; I’ve had children at school for the last 15 years or so, and there might have been one or two occasions when I’ve gone in to talk to a teacher or a head outside of parentteacher meetings. But I could certainly count those times on the fingers of one hand. I hope I’m not a bad mother; and I know there are some problems – and bullying is foremost among them – when a meeting with a teacher has to be arranged, and fast. But bullying apart, I believe that my daughters are better helped if I hang back from making appointments, and arm them instead to negotiate their own issues, and fight their own battles, at school. Why so? Well, the raison d’etre of parenting is to make your child independent: and it seems to me that if I wade in at every opportunity to smooth my child’s path in life, I’m not helping her to learn to do it for herself. And what message does it give if, when she tells me about a problem she’s experiencing, my response is to say ‘I’ll come in to talk to your teacher about that’? What it says is: you can’t sort this out for yourself; you’re not smart enough or capable enough or eloquent enough. You can’t do it, but I can. And that doesn’t help my daughter develop those skills, and it doesn’t help her become experienced and confident at learning to problemsolve for herself. Sometimes, over the years, my daughters’ problems have been significant ones – and certainly many of them have seemed significant to my daughters, even if they didn’t seem all that important to me. On at least one occasion, the problem has been a clash between them and a teacher. But rather than race in to school to have it out with the teacher, I tell my daughter to find a way of dealing with it; and if possible, I help her work

Are you forever rushing into school to talk to your child’s teacher, or phoning other parents to talk about playground squabbles? Think again, says Joanna Moorhead, a mother of four daughters.

Let them fight their own battles out what that might be. Could she start the ball rolling on building a better relationship with the teacher in question by being nicer to her, or by working harder in the subject, or by making more contributions in class? Because the truth is that, all through life, there will be individuals who will seem to stand in the way of what we want – and learning to work with these people, or round them, is a hugely important life skill. Talking to your child about what’s going on will also help her process her own feelings; and again, this is an important learning curve. Help your child see that it’s not the case that someone has got it in for her, but maybe just that the teacher or the other child has issues in their own life. And instead of encouraging your child into negative feelings turn things round into something positive. Similarly problems with other children: I long ago made a resolution never, ever to get involved at parental level over my daughters’ squabbles as

learning to get on with their peers is what childhood and adolescence is for. None of this means that I’m abdicating responsibility for how my girls behave. It’s just that talking to other adults isn’t how I believe my offspring will learn to treat others well; that comes, I think, from modelling what I hope are good relationships in my own life, and in listening to the issues they have in their lives (when they want to talk about them) and helping them find a way of dealing with them. So it’s really important to make time to listen when they’re experiencing problems; and it’s crucial to validate how they’re feeling, to reflect back that I understand their worries and can see that it’s a genuine issue. But what should happen next is far more about equipping them to go back into school and work out how to put the problematic relationship on track, than it is about grabbing your coat and racing in to try to solve the difficulties yourself.

by Rachael Ross, Chair, Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association When I went to school in the mid ‘70s and ‘80s, children with any form of disability were not actively encouraged into mainstream education. This absence of anyone with a disability was also reflected in the wider community. Consequently when I left school, and for much of my early adult life, I had never even met or spoken to a person with a disability, leaving me awkward and unsure how to interact in their company.

Thankfully times have changed Children with a wide variety of additional needs are now commonplace in mainstream education. Children like my son Max. Max is eight and happens to have Down syndrome. Until the 1970s it was still widely believed that children with Down syndrome were uneducable, and they were denied that most fundamental of childhood rights; an education. We now know that with right specialist support these children can learn alongside their peers, and today, more children than ever before are being successfully included in mainstream schools. That’s not to say that special schools do not play an equally important role. It has to be a decision based on what’s best for each individual child and their specific needs.

The benefits of inclusion For Max, the benefits in attending mainstream education are huge. Speech and language issues are a significant problem for nearly all children with Down syndrome, and can lead to frustration and isolation if not tackled head on. Studies show that when they attend mainstream school, these children develop at least two years faster with spoken language and literacy. They also benefit from having positive role models. Max needs to be around his typically developing peers, not just for PE and playtime, but there needs to be meaningful interaction. He needs to feel that he is part of the class, part of the wider school community, with the same opportunities and responsibilities as the other children. Otherwise how can we expect him to interact successfully with society as an adult? We are very fortunate that Max’s teachers have created a welcoming and caring environment where he is very much a part of school life. When we visit, I am always overwhelmed by the genuine affection and friendship shown to Max by both staff and pupils. Many of the children have grown up with Max, and see it as nothing unusual that he is in their class working with them. In turn, I’m sure the children benefit from being with Max. They learn to celebrate differences. They learn acceptance and patience, and will hopefully grow into more tolerant adults which will lead to a more accepting and integrated society. Inclusion is helping to steadily improve society’s attitude towards Down syndrome, fuelled by more positive media portrayal. Several top retailers

including M&S, Next and Boden have used children with Down syndrome in their advertising campaigns. Actors with Down syndrome have played characters in popular TV shows such as Glee and Downton Abbey.

Progress but still a way to go More is being achieved than ever before, but there is still a long way to go. Down syndrome is the most common cause of intellectual disability and yet funding does not reflect this. The situation has worsened in the recent economic climate, and parents are becoming increasingly frustrated by the lack of access to specialist support like speech and language therapy, which help enable their children to participate in mainstream education. As the Coalition Government plans to ‘end the bias towards mainstream’, there is a real risk that 30 years of slow uphill progress will be undermined unless there is adequate investment in training, research, resources and specialist support. We have seen glimpses of what can be achieved as children with the right skills and support go on to lead more independent and productive lives, enter employment, and become valued members of their communities. But as yet, there has never been an entire generation of children with Down syndrome that has passed through the system with adequate and sustained support in all areas of need, continuing into early adulthood. Until this happens, we will never be sure of their true capabilities.

Early Years

What’s New! Change of name for popular Sonning nursery Holme Park Day Nursery (formerly Monkey Puzzle Day Nursery) was until recently part of the Monkey Puzzle nursery group; but when the owners were given the opportunity to become an independent private childcare provider they jumped at the chance. Set in acres of delightful parkland, the nursery offers parents a caring and safe environment for their child in a convenient location just off the A4 near Reading.  Owners, Claire and Richard, told us: “Since opening seven years ago the nursery has earned itself an enviable reputation for providing only the very best in early years’ childcare. Everyone is so excited about the change, with the nursery team proud of their new uniform and parents and children looking forward to the new Holme Park family of animals that will be the new room names.â€? For more information please contact the nursery on 0118 969 5545 or visit their new website www.holmeparkdaynursery.co.uk You can be sure of a warm welcome.Â

Disco Duck is dancing his way into a venue near you! Young children come alive and respond to actions, they also respond to the beats from pop music. Disco Duck is a structured, fun and exciting class, created to develop the very beginnings of rhythm, co-ordination and gross motor skills with inspiring and imaginative music and themes. With its basis around the Early Years and Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, this is a brilliant experience for young children with lots of energy! Little Oaks at the Oratory Prep School In response to demand from parents, the Oratory Prep School is opening the Little Oaks Nursery in January 2014 to offer term time childcare to the over 2s. The new nursery will have close physical and educational links to the school’s successful Pre Prep department and as a Catholic school - though not a school exclusively for Catholic children - parents can expect their children’s care to be based on the belief that every child is unique, precious and has something valuable to offer. Button Decorations Make funky decorations for the tree. You can use up your button collection or go to a good sewing shop to stock up on supplies. 1. Choose a selection of buttons. Let the children choose the colours they want - be traditional with festive reds or go for a more contemporary look with beautiful, bright colours. 2. Use jewellery wire to thread them together (which can be bought at any good craft store). Thread the buttons on to the wire and join together in a circle. 3. To complete the task, loop a colourful festive ribbon through your circle of buttons and hang on the tree.

Christmas Crafts

ive with the kids Festive Lanterns Use an old jam jar to create a stunning Christmas lantern. These lanterns will look lovely on the fireplace or make a great teacher’s gift. 1. Simply cover a clean glass jar with PVA glue. 2. Cover the jar with squares of tissue paper. 3. Include a pretty snowflake design for decoration, which you can draw and cut out from any coloured tissue paper you like. 4. To complete the jar you need to paint it with a final coat of half PVA and half water solution. 5. Allow the lantern to dry out, tie a ribbon round the top and then pop a tealight inside for a beautiful, personalised glowing lantern.

Snow Bauble You can make lots of these to fill up a bowl or hang them from the tree. It’s quite a messy activity but the kids will love it. 1. Blow a balloon up to about the size of a tennis ball. 2. Cut some wool into 15 strands, each about 15cm long. 3. Dip the wool in a bowl of PVA glue and squeeze off the excess glue. 4. Wrap the glue covered wool around the balloon, repeat with all the wool and leave to dry overnight. 5. Pop the balloon once dry and remove carefully from your wool ball. 6. To hang your snow bauble up, loop through a colourful piece of ribbon and tie in a knot. 7. You can use any colour wool and even add glitter to the glue for extra sparkle!

Other ideas Go on a festive treasure hunt in the woods – collect pine cones to decorate either by gluing on glitter or colourful mini pompoms. Hang on the tree, group in a bowl or hang in clusters on the fireplace. Make your own wrapping paper – the smallest of children will enjoy decorating plain sheets of paper with footprints or
