News & Views Meet Ana, Sonia and Miriam from Castelo Solicitors
Ana, Sonia & Miriam are mothers first and solicitors second. As full time working mothers they are well aware of what it can be like juggling life’s everyday issues together with remaining upbeat for the children at all times. Sometimes these ‘everyday’ issues play on our minds and could do with an expert opinion, but there just isn’t enough time in the day or perhaps you feel it doesn’t quite need a formal appointment, or you’d rather not attend a stuffy solicitor’s office. Through their experience as solicitors, they have developed a secure sense of genuine empathy and understanding for individuals facing these ‘niggly’ legal issues that could be put to rest over a comfortable ‘coffee & a chat’. This is why they are introducing their own stay and play playgroup, giving parents a chance to come along and let their children play, whilst both/either mum or dad or caregiver can have a break and socialise over a coffee and even ask a quick question or two. Their new approach to providing legal support stems from the understanding that not everybody has the time to visit legal advisors for a ‘hypothetical’ scenario, or perhaps they don’t have anyone to leave the children with. Join them for an informal coffee/cup of tea and bring the children too. The first playgroup will take place on Saturday 4th November 2017 at St Philip’s Church, Earl’s Court Road, Kensington W8 6QH, from 10.30am-12.30. Parents eligible for Childcare Compensation
Thousands of parents who have missed out on Tax-Free Childcare due to technical problems with the Childcare Service website may be able to claim compensation from the Government. The Childcare Service website, which is run by HMRC, has been plagued with technical glitches since it went live in April, affecting parents’ ability to register for Tax-Free Childcare and 30 hours childcare. In order to receive 30 hours free childcare in September, eligible parents needed to have received a code from HMRC by 31 August and taken it to their childcare provider to secure a place. New guidance published on the gov.uk website under the heading ‘Childcare Service Compensation’ states that: “If you’ve been unable to access Tax-Free Childcare through your childcare account for technical reasons, you may be able to claim compensation.” For more information call HMRC on 0300 123 4097. How to cope with toddler tantrums
When your child is in the middle of a tantrum, it can be very hard to stop yourself from joining in! Every toddler will throw a tantrum at some stage of their life. But do not fear! There is a solution to the tantrum episodes and ways to prevent them from happening again.
Ignorance is bliss You should respond to a tantrum, but not react. When a child is in a full blown screaming tantrum, they have exploded with emotions, and there is no way of dragging them back to reality... yet. Ride the tantrum wave, and when they calm down (which they eventually always will!) then you can talk. Nothing you say during the tantrum will help - if anything, it will make the situation worse. Keep calm and breathe Even though you may want to lay next to your child and kick and scream alongside them, if you bite your tongue and remain authoritative rather than stressed, then your child will be more likely to calm quicker. Patience is needed, as children often throw tantrums because they see that as effective communication and know no other ways to communicate. It takes time and practice until they realise it is not! Distraction A brilliant weapon in the parenting toolbox! Try and distract them before they descend into utter madness. Use humour to distract
tricky situations, such as silly songs, laughing, or even tickles. Children have a pretty short attention span which proves useful when you need to distract!
Recognise the signs The good ole saying “prevention is better than cure” is apparent here. Although we can't always predict what will cause a tantrum, we can try and avoid it a second time around, or be prepared for heightened emotions such as hunger and tiredness that can lead to a tantrum. Why not make a note of the cause of the tantrum and hopefully try and avoid it next time?
The ‘calm corner’ Admittedly you may want to sit in this corner yourself when you think it's too much to handle, but it's for the little ones! If your child is having a meltdown at home, create a quiet corner such as the bottom step of the stairs, or the corner of the hallway. Whilst they are there, don't give them a lot of attention and make sure they don't have access to their favourite toys, books, or fun distractions - we don't need them wanting to return to the calm corner!
allowed to currently play with... do not give in! If you do, they catch on very quickly that throwing a tantrum means they get their own way, crafty little ones! It's hard to stay strong, but it will be worth the investment in the future.
The limited words tantrum There's a lot of frustration with trying to communicate but only having a word bank of around 100 words. These tantrums can be helped with your assistance. Help your toddler explain and understand their feelings. Try to guess what they're experiencing and ask them “are you sleepy?” or “are you sad because that's not your toy?” This gives them a chance to think about their feelings and eventually express them in a different way.
Compromise Tantrums in toddlers are often caused by a feeling of “no control.” Your toddler is desperate for a little control over their life, so try and keep the balance by giving them a choice within a choice. Instead of saying “you need to hold my hand when crossing roads,” say, “would
you like to hold mummy/daddy's hand or the pram when crossing the road?” That way they think they're getting a choice, but you're still getting the desired outcome. Win-win!
Praise the good Reinforce and praise good behaviour. Try making a star chart, and if they hit a target of stars in the week, give a reward. This helps your child realise there is a certain type of behaviour that leads to great results, hopefully teaching them to avoid tantrums as no stars are awarded to screaming toddlers! Tantrums aren't forever, but hopefully these tips will make them a little easier!

Do not give into ‘I want it all’ style tantrums One of the most common tantrums in the book. If your toddler is having a strop because you’re not allowing them to steal a toy off another toddler, or because of the chocolate you refused to give them, or even the toy they aren't

How children learn NEW things
Every parent anticipates and remembers their little one’s first steps. All those baby milestones - rolling, sitting up, waving, crawling, talking - are eagerly aided and encouraged. But what happens when your child gets a little bit older?
“We talk about specific windows for learning some of those early skills, but every age is a window of opportunity for engaging children, showing an interest, exposing them to a wide variety of experiences,” says consultant clinical psychologist Emma Citron, who specialises in children and adolescents. “The approaches might change but children don’t stop needing that input once they reach school age.” The science bit So what’s going on in there? Learning any new skill means building connections between brain cells called neural pathways. Like branches on a tree - and fed by the information around them in numerous different ways - more advanced skills stem from the fundamentals already in place. Not everyone learns in the same way, so the neural pathways for mastering the same skills can take different routes, but the more they are used, the stronger they get. Similarly, circuits that aren’t used will weaken until eventually they no longer exist. “Physically, emotionally, socially, in every way the development process is ongoing,” Emma emphasises. “Even a child of 9 or 10 would potentially need remedial
October 2017
parenting or therapy if for whatever reason they were suddenly not enabled to develop.”
“I don’t want to” The brain circuits for the most critical activities, such as breathing, are already developed at birth. Those for the next wave of core skills - moving, eating and communicating - happen instinctively within roughly the same time frame for all babies because they are at some level essential for survival. When it comes to later skills, whether it’s swimming, riding a bike, playing chess or singing, there is no inherent drive to learn so the motivation has to come from elsewhere. What that is will depend on each child’s own personality, abilities, confidence and interests, friends and support, access, and understanding of benefits in the longer term. “You still have a teaching role but it’s more complicated as children get older. You need to communicate effectively, listen and have mutual trust to find the approach that works for them,” says Emma. “But whatever suits their style of learning, the same basic dos and don’ts apply…”
Create the right environment Remember how involved you were when your baby was trying to balance blocks in a tower or put together their first jigsaw pieces? “A young child needs to be in a caring, stimulated environment, where you are making eye contact, playing, giving your attention and time, and being patient,” Emma points
out. The same applies when that child is attempting to master a new skill a few years down the line. And as parents we learn pretty quickly not to introduce anything new or challenging if it’s nap or feeding time. “That hasn’t changed. If your child has switched off because they’re tired, overloaded, working hard at school all day and being shunted from A to B to C after school, they’re not going to be ripe for learning much of anything.”
Have fun! Compare your time in the classroom with your children’s now, particularly at primary school, and we all recognise that professional teaching methods have changed dramatically. “Gone are the days when you’d expect children to just ingest information,” Emma states. “It’s not all a top-down process. We know that most children learn best by being given the resources and space to work things out for themselves, with support there when it is wanted - not by being micromanaged by a so-called tiger parent! “If it’s all seeming like a chore, something’s gone wrong. Your primary goal has to be raising wellbalanced individuals who want to engage with the world with curiosity and fun.”
Fail together Those neural pathways strengthen with use so practice really does make perfect. As beneficial as passing on your tips for the skills you do have and letting children see what can be achieved is showing that you’re not afraid to fail
By Anna Wright - and keep trying - when it’s something you can’t do. Make sure there are activities in the mix that are new to you, too - and if your child is sometimes the faster learner, they will gain confidence from that boost.
Be the best model Children will still learn - whether you want them to or not - by copying you. Of course it’s more subtle than the baby mirroring your actions, and the circle of people they will emulate in some way gets larger as they get older, taking in teachers, friends, public figures and others, but your own influences through your attitude and behaviours remains absolutely pivotal (whatever your independent pre-teen might like you to believe!). “Do practise what you preach. It’s a very easy thing to say but one that many don’t actually do,” Emma warns. Don’t say you can’t without trying, don’t fall back on the same automatic excuses, don’t go in with a negative mindset or be overly self-critical, but - most importantly embrace and share a positive, open-minded, approach to everyday life. The brain circuits children are forming are powered by everything they are experiencing around them. It is their senses - the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and sensations - and their feelings and emotions that release the neurotransmitters (the chemicals in the brain) to ‘flick the switch’ on their new skills. “Imbue your children with curiosity and passion by showing the same to them,” Emma says. “Everything else stems from this.”

Children at St Benedict’s, Ealing have moved into their brand new Junior School building this term. Nominated for a Royal Institute of British Architects award, this beautifully light and spacious facility has been hailed as an eco-friendly landmark for London. The new extension has been specially designed with nursery and pre-prep children in mind. Classrooms can be opened up to provide larger spaces for team-teaching and shared learning. There are also plenty of small, cosy spaces for quiet activities and one-to-one teaching, a home economics room, and direct access to landscaped outdoor learning and play areas. The new Junior School is also extremely ecofriendly, having been built to a set of energy requirements known as ‘Passivhaus.’ This Scandinavian, sustainable construction method makes buildings up to 96% more energy efficient than older buildings. There are currently only a handful of schools in the UK built to this standard. All classrooms are south facing for good natural light and have fantastic views across to Ealing Abbey. To the delight of its local parents, Connaught House School is now offering its special brand of schooling as a fully coeducational school. Boys who formerly left Connaught House School at 7 or 8 will have the option of staying put until 11. Parents who chose Connaught House for its warm, inclusive and family orientated environment will no longer need to find their sons an alternative school at 7 or 8. In a world rightly concerned with minimising gender stereotyping and maximising equal opportunities, the school’s uniquely small class sizes suit coeducation perfectly. In a homely five-storey townhouse a stone’s throw from Hyde Park, pupils of all ages are at ease with one another, in a familial way. Every pupil is encouraged to explore their unique range of talents and passions, irrespective of gender. With a pupil-staff ratio of 1: 8 - or even lower - throughout the school, staff get to know every child and his/her parents personally. Smaller classes mean there is far less pressure to conform to gender stereotypes and every child can express their true individuality. In PE, boys, with positive encouragement can excel at modern dance, whilst girls undertake master programming and celebrate scoring goals in sports. As senior schools increasingly open their doors to boys at 11+, this could not have come at a better time. Connaught House and its new Senior Leadership team are thrilled to offer a clear alternative to a single sex education at primary level, not to mention, preparing children for real life in all of its diversity. www.connaughthouseschool.co.uk St Augustine’s Priory is a leading Catholic Independent Day School for girls aged 3-18. The 13 acres of stunning grounds in which the school sits provide a physical freedom unique in the heart of London. The Forest School, Meadow and Open Air Theatre all utilise the natural setting, encouraging pupils to enjoy an emotional freedom to grow intellectually and spiritually. In line with their vision for excellence in learning and teaching, Phase 1 of the Building Development Plan was completed this year, and saw the School Hall and Entrance being enhanced, expanded and modernised. The Nursery and Prep I (Reception) are key entry points. The bespoke indoor learning facilities are ideal for pupils’ development and pupils bene6t from highly trained, well qualifed staff. Lessons are taught increasingly by specialist and Senior teachers in the Junior School to prepare girls for a smooth transition into Senior School. A rich variety of cocurricular activities from the Preps through to Upper VI is intrinsic to their commitment to educating the whole person. Find out more at: www.sapriory.com 6

News from the Schools
At the beginning of each academic year at Shiplake College, during the Headmaster’s addresses to staff and pupils, Mr Davies announces a word or phrase of the year. He asks all members of the school community to have this in mind during their day-to-day teaching or learning and activities. The phrase often reflects the growth mindset culture the College is proud of - with previous words being ‘Yet’ and ‘Just Try.’ This year the Headmaster revealed that the phrase would be: nullum est periculum mercedem non, (no risk, no reward). The 2016-2017 year was incredibly successful for Shiplake College for various reasons, including record numbers, records broken in both A Levels and GCSE results, and sporting successes such as reaching the semi-finals at Henley Royal Regatta. The phrase ‘No Risk, No Reward’ has therefore never seemed so right for the College, as all connected to Shiplake strive to continue to make the environment as best as it possibly can be for the pupils to develop and flourish. Come and see for yourself at the open morning on Saturday 14th October or contact the admissions team to arrange an individual visit: registrar@shiplake.org.uk Or call: 0118 9 402 455. Durston House has been a feature of Ealing life for 131 years, always independent and proud of its outstanding academic success. As a boys’ prep school (4 to 13 years), it has prepared pupils for major senior schools in the London area and further afield. It has an enviable record of achievement - 32 academic scholarships to St. Paul’s over the last ten years. Each boy receives a broad and balanced education; excellence in academic, creative and physical pursuits, while being guided in his social, moral and spiritual development. Extra-curricular education is strong. To find out more visit: www.durstonhouse.org Or call: 020 8991 6532. Visits to the school are welcome.
Eaton Square Upper School, Mayfair is set right in the heart of London at 106 Piccadilly. It opened its doors for the first time to a very apt 106 pupils this September. The school boasts a stunning Grade I listed building as its setting, and is located directly opposite the iconic Green Park. Spanning five storeys and boasting purpose-built, state-of-the-art science labs, art studios and lecture-style classrooms, the co-educational school will eventually cater for more than 400 students aged between 11 and 18 years. Part of the Minerva Education group, the school is connected to Eaton Square Pre-Prep and Preparatory schools, as well as Hyde Park School and The Lyceum. It’s wide network and convenient location makes it the perfect base for students already studying within the Minerva group, as well as wider for children and families from across central London. After two years of careful planning and preparation, as well as the development of a nurturing and challenging academic timetable, the school is delighted to have started its first term with an overwhelmingly positive reception from students and parents alike. The school where your child will spend most of their teen years will have a huge influence on their development and character. Your choices are important - which is where Open Days come in. Take your son or daughter with you; they will see things through a different set of eyes, and their opinion matters. Not all open day dates were available when we went to press: please check the websites of the schools you're interested in for more information and where necessary, to book first.

Clubs & Classes
Dancing Feet...
Some great ideas for starting your child’s love of dance performing arts. Ah, the ballet. All those gorgeous costumes, perfect turn-outs, buns and the sublime music. Who hasn’t dreamed of being a Prima Ballerina when wafting around our bedroom in a synthetic net tut? And if you actually went as far as learning to dance when you were younger, you might be keen to instil this love of dance in your child even if you gave up when you weren’t allowed to tie your shoe ribbons up to your knee. How can you find out what kind of class is best for your child, whether they are a boy or a girl? Read on to find the perfect dance space for your Baby.
Tiny dancer When your child is very young say, under five - shuffling around on tip toe while wafting their hands or pretending to be a tiger is about as much as you can ask for. Look for a class that teaches very young children together, not mixed in with older age groups when they will probably be ignored or will be disruptive. A class where there’s an emphasis on having fun and doing different dancing games each time will keep them keen and entertained - and going back each week. 12
Expect to have to stay for these classes and possibly join in, too. Try a Diddy Dance class You can take your child to a taster session for free to see if they like it and the classes help to enhance your child’s coordination and sense of rhythm in a fun and relaxed session. They cater for boys and girls from 18 months and they use ribbons and hoops as well as other fun props. They include lots of different influences including jive, salsa, disco, tap and hip hop. www.diddidance.com Starting to get more serious If your child makes it past the age of five or six and still wants to go to class, it may be time to start looking at a proper training class where they can take grades or get involved with productions. The choice for ballet is the Royal Academy of Dance (rad.org.uk) syllabus or for modern dance there’s the Imperial Society Modern Theatre & Tap Dance (istd.org) course. If they are still keen but aren’t motivated by grades, find a class that keeps their attention and won’t get boring. Street and jazz
dance are great for this as they will learn new routines all the time. They can also try out holiday classes where they might spend a week doing different activities - this gives them a great grounding in what they might be best at. All-round schools are also options where they learn to sing, act and dance. Royal Ballet Associates training If your child has been taking ballet grades and is seriously thinking about a career in dance, the Royal Ballet runs classes to prepare them for this move. The Associates Programme trains children aged eight to 15 in conjunction with their usual classes. royalballetschool.org.uk

By Sally J. Hall Although your son may have to cope with teasing if he intends to dance and carry on dancing, there are plenty of roles for ballet, jazz and modern dancers in all areas - the stage, TV and touring groups. There’s even a Boys’ Ballet school in London that teaches the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus. boysballetlondon.com What’s available? If you’re not sure what all these styles entail, it’s best to take your child along to have a look or try a taster session. One style may resonate. And if they get older and hang up their ballet shoes, why
not encourage them to move on to a funkier style rather than give up dancing altogether? Ballet Tap Ballet and Tap Modern Dance and Tap Jazz Hip Hop Contemporary Break Dance Street Dance Commercial Dance (a blend of Street and Hip Hop). Stagecoach Also offers dance, acting and singing as a part of

How to get your kids in the It's one of the best times of the year for children, but how can you help your child get into the spirit of Halloween? We've come up with lots of ideas to create a truly scary atmosphere for your child so that everyone is ready and prepared for the spookiest event of the year...! GET CRAFTY! All children like to make a mess and be imaginative. Well, let them do this for Halloween. Most of these ideas only require simple materials and things you can find lying around your house.
Spooky spider crafts For this, all you'll need is an old toilet roll, paint, scissors, paper and googly eyes. All you need to do is cut the end of the roll into 8 leg sized pieces and bend the legs upwards so they stick out. Dip the legs in black paint and print onto paper. Then stick on your eyes. Milk bottle ghosts Using empty milk cartons and black pen, draw spooky faces onto the plastic.
Tissue paper ghouls Take an old jam jar and wrap with tissue paper. Then draw spooky faces onto the paper. You can then either place a torch inside or a candle with parental supervision.
Halloween decorations You can choose whether to design pumpkins, Frankenstein or ghouls and will then need orange, green or white tissue paper respectively. Wrap the tissue around a toilet roll, tuck in at one end and tie with a pipe cleaner at the other. Then decorate with whatever you can get your hands on!
spirit
Jelly worms Pack a cup with straws and pour in your jelly mix. Then leave to set in the fridge. Getting them out can be tricky, but you could turn this into a great Halloween game!
Pumpkin prints Cut an apple in half, dip in orange paint and have pumpkin shapes printed before your eyes!
Magic foaming potion Take a glass, and place it in a large container to catch overflowing liquid. Fill the glass about halfway full with vinegar. Then put a few drops of food colouring on a spoon with bicarbonate of soda (the more you use the bigger the foam!). Stir the spoon into the vinegar and watch the magic happen. You could also add some glitter for extra sparkle! GET COOKING! What better way to enjoy this event than with lots of edible treats? Below are some really easy and cheap ideas you can try at home.
Chocolate mousse gravestones Take your chocolate mousse (either homemade or shop bought) and crumble broken Oreo biscuits over the top to resemble dirt. Then stick a rich tea biscuit gravestone and use an icing pen to write the message on the tombstone.
Halloween custard Layer broken-up chocolate brownie and custard into a short glass. Once filled to the top, use two mini marshmallows and chocolate buttons to create eyes.
Muddy worms Make up a batch of chocolate Angel delight, and poke jelly worms out of the top as though they're coming out of the ground. Then sprinkle with grated chocolate to look like worm casts.
Cheeseburger faces A great dinner treat to celebrate Halloween and this requires no effort or skill! Simply place or tear cheese into faces and melt on the top of your burgers. GET COSTUME DESIGNING! Costumes nowadays can be really expensive, and whilst some children will happily go out wearing a bin bag with arm holes cut in, others will want something a little more complex. Rather than spend a fortune on pricey costumes, find ways to design their own. Here are a few simple ideas...
Witch's hat Roll a large piece of cardboard into a cone to fit the circumference of your child's head. Glue, or tape from the inside and trim any spare cardboard (this could be used for decoration later). Then decorate as you please - use glitter, coloured can and pens to design your hat.
Make a cardboard Wall-E If your child likes Disney, then this character is incredibly easy to make, and just involves cutting holes in a large cardboard box. If that doesn't suffice, wrap arms and legs in tin foil, and create goggles using either cardboard or an empty egg box.
Create a crocodile’s head Another way you can recycle those old boxes is by making a crocodile head. Take a long square box and cut a large triangular shape out of both sides for the jaws (make sure you cut enough out so your child can see!). Then cut teeth out of white paper and voila! To make this even more specific, you could consider pairing this with a ticking clock to replicate the crocodile in Peter Pan.
