www.netbuddy.org.uk is a website for parents and carers of people with learning disabilities, which offers hundreds of simple, yet ingenious solutions to everyday issues – from bed wetting to challenging behaviour. The tips are contributed daily by other parents, carers, teachers and therapists, and organised by subject. There’s also an interactive forum for people to solve specific practical issues. The site’s creator, Deborah Gundle, herself has a son with profound learning disabilities. “When Zach was small, I spent so much time and energy solving daily problems, and I knew other people were doing the same,” she said. “I set up www.netbuddy.org.uk so we didn’t need to keep re-inventing the wheel.” For more information go to www.netbuddy.org.uk

News & Views The Little Music Factory, Notting Hill
Babysitting services over the holidays
The Little Music Factory offers fun and interactive classes for pre-schoolers of all ages run by actress and teacher Cate Debenham-Taylor. She creates a familiar framework and then introduces different songs and activities each week to keep it fresh and exciting, using unusual and beautiful instruments from around the world for the children to experiment with, plus plenty of familiar ones too. The mixed age group gives the little ones the opportunity to learn from the older ones, but it also encourages the grown ups to join in too! She uses a parachute and bubbles for extra fun. Classes take place above a lovely café- Charlie's on Portobello Road, and parents and carers often get together after the class for a coffee. Look out for pre-school drama classes which will be on offer soon.

I Know Why It's Yum, Mum! “Dr Freg and the Fruit and Vegetable Mysteries” will soon be visiting primary schools across the capital with a fun, musical and interactive show for children aged between 5 and 11, which promises to change children’s attitudes to fruit and vegetables, and improve their diets. We are bombarded daily with messages that prove the theory to be true: 5 portions a day will keep the Doctor away! But children in England eat less than three pieces of fruit and veg a day on average1. Dr Freg (pronounced "fredge", short for Dr Fruit–and-Veg) is on the case to reverse this trend. His mission is simple: to tell primary schoolage children, in the language they use themselves, why different fruit and vegetables are good for them. The company is taking bookings from schools in London from January 2012 onwards. The price of the show (including accompanying workshops) costs from £1 per child. www.iknowwhyitsyummum.com 4

Is play something children just do? As busy mothers we can all identify with the following scenario... You rush out the door at 8.30am for the morning school run, followed by a mound of errand running, before rushing back to the house with a disgruntled 4 year-old for his lunch and a snatched nap. Lunch over, your child becomes absorbed and engaged in a game using his toy fire engines and cars. You tip toe away from the room with relief, thinking ‘thank goodness he’s quiet now. I can put away the dishes’. But have we, as parents, ever considered the real value of play for a child? Through watching our children play we get a glimpse into their creative and imaginative inner world, where they express and project their feelings onto the toys they are free to move around and talk to. Play is a crucial part of a child’s healthy social, emotional and cognitive development. It helps children understand relationships, identify emotions, explore the world around them, and learn to problem-solve. Children do not always have the verbal ability to express themselves and so play for the child is their natural language. In psychotherapist Eric Erikson’s words, ‘To play it out is the most natural self-healing measure childhood affords.’ Enlighten therapists play alongside children in ways that are therapeutic and healing. By entering the child’s world, they make sense of the concerns, problems and issues they are struggling with. Working in conjunction with the parents, they explore the themes and insights that arise through the context of the play, and think together and explore ways which support the family as a whole. Play therapy is offered for a range of issues children and families experience, such as grief and loss, changes in family situations including divorce and trauma, as well as school issues including bullying, peer problems and low self-esteem around learning. It will feel so good, that you’ll want to celebrate like this every year.

Borrow rather than buy – If you wanted to go to the Cotswolds (or the Maldives) you’d use a hotel rather than buy a house, so extend the thinking. Have you and the kids tried a ‘Boris Bike’ yet http://www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/cycling/14808.aspx? Joining a car club www.streetcar.co.uk means you can use a van, BMW or the newest vehicle whenever you want (including automatics) rather than the familyrunaround for every job. How about renting a magnificent living Christmas tree for about £50; here’s one scheme, http://www.thelittletreecompany.com. Lots of people go away at Xmas, could you help them out by adopting their pets for a week?
Or you could: Adopt a bird from the World Wildlife Trust This year, why not avoid getting yourself into a flap, and instead give a gift that’s truly priceless by choosing a unique alternative. You can choose from a number of bird species to adopt, in the safe knowledge that you will be giving something back to conservation. By adopting a bird you are helping WWT to continue with vital wetland habitat conservation in the UK and around the world, manage ongoing and future conservation projects, such as saving the red-breasted goose and the Madagascar pochar, save globally threatened species. WWT have already helped save species such as the Hawaiian goose (nene) and the barnacle goose from extinction. By adopting a bird from as little as £2 a month you can help protect the future of threatened birds here in the UK and around the world. For more info, go to www.wwt.org.uk/adopt-pick

Share the tasks. Try making the Christmas pudding or cake with the kids on ‘Stir Up Sunday’ (20 November), or how about soup from a flask and a winter picnic (followed by hide and seek) at Holland Park on ‘Buy Nothing Day’ on Saturday, 26 November, see http://www.buynothingday.co.uk/ Get together with a neighbour to divide and conquer; one to make the mince pies and one to do the pudding.
Make it better to give than to receive by finding ways to help strangers. Do you have any children’s books you could pass on to new readers? Offer to friends – or people with the right age children at your child’s school/nursery – or take to a charity shop. In cities you can find your nearest faith centre to pass on tinned goods, clean bedding and books to refugee centres or families going through difficult times. You can make vouchers – offering gifts of time to busy parents – as presents too.

Encourage your children to make gifts – jam or truffles for the older ones. Or try vanilla essence (split a vanilla bean and put into a clean small jar with vodka); flavoured sugar (decorate a big jar and fill with fair-trade sugar and a vanilla bean or cinnamon stick). If you want to be more imaginative with a bargain tin of Quality Street try sewing together the sweets to make a necklace. The green ones can be turned into mini sweet kebabs if you spear them on a lolly stick. Draw on a smiley Christmas fairy face/dinosaur/Santa at the top. I have a dream. Create a list of things everyone in the house would like to do in the holidays, plus some new ideas too. Watching skaters, building a den in the living room, reading in bed all day, learning to make bubblegum bubbles. My six-year-old once asked me if I’d go to McDonalds with her – and because it was a novelty we both enjoyed our burger, chips and ice cream. This year we are planning to turn our house into an art studio for a day and might try this recipe for puffy paint (brilliant for making shields and 3D fashion sketches) from the fantastic magical childhood blog, http://magicalchildhood. wordpress.com/2011/08/28/easy-puffy-paint/
IOUS – Versatile Vouchers for Very Lovely Children is a big concept in a small box. Start a family tradition. What do you always do? Or what would you like to do? It could be making your own advent calendar, going to see a pantomime during the school holidays with granny and the cousins, listening to carol singers while you write festive cards or making a particular tasty treat. Domestic goddess Nigella Lawson has a recipe for cranberry-filled Christmas morning muffins that help signal the start of a special day. Muffins cook best with a lumpy mix, so mixing the muffins could be a task even your littlest could enjoy.
The Christmas Yearbook is a really massive concept in a small package. 25 years of a family history in one box. All it takes is for everyone assembled on Christmas Day to spend five minutes writing a note about their year. You, as the Grandmaster of the book then should spend around 10 minutes finding a photo and writing about the day's events. Just pop the book back in the box and store it with the Christmas decs to discover again next year. Size 22.5cm x 22.5 cm Price: £22 each www.2littleboys.co.uk or telephone 020 8400 3606

Play with your kids more, but not cards or scrabble just follow their lead. Children grow up really fast – even if the minutes might drag the years will fly. Most children want their family to play with them more (claims a Unicef report which argues that we keep giving them gadgets they don’t want) so take a lead from what the kids are doing and join in. Don’t think of this as a tennis game you have to win, or a chance to get them practising their maths tables. Just play with the model soldiers/Sylvanians/ Deadly 60 cards or people cut-outs and enjoy the freedom of time suddenly seeming never-ending.
Make Your Own Recycled Paper Train Set – The "Make Your Own Recycled Paper Train Set" recycles waste paper into train tracks. You can finally make a train track as big and long as you want, and run a battery operated train! This new toy is also educational as it helps children understand the full process of paper recycling. The Recycle Factory turns waste paper into train sets! The train set comes with an electric train. Create the largest train set without having to buy new tracks. If the track is broken, it can be recycled again! Pack comes with a battery operated train (batteries not included), 3 carriages, mixing bowl, a draining tray, 3 shape moulds, and instructions. The train set is suitable for all children (6+). Price: £24.99 www.bynature.co.uk or 0845 463 3835
You’ve got time to complete a crafty DIY project. Together could you make a cushion, knit a scarf/ mobile phone cover, paint an old chair or T-shirt/baby grow with crazy designs (spots and stripes are the easiest)? Think about what you could do and make sure you’ve got suitable kit (eg, brushes, paint cleaner/stripper). Or how about making a winter scarecrow out of lots of twigs collected during a walk in the woods? A talented friend has used this time to turn an unwanted violin case into a shelf for dried herb jars and create a living willow bench in her garden. What could you do together?
Festive Fun For All The Family at Build A Bear Workshops – Make your season beary merry with cute stuffed teddy bears with red and green plaid bows! Organise a talent show, ideal if there are lots of you in the house. Think mini play (adapt a classic like Christmas Carol, or perhaps a nursery rhyme), kareoke, impressions, show-off a talent, tell a joke (good for the shy as they can be read out). Make sure you have a host, programmes, popcorn and lots of clapping. If there’s only two of you try a fashion show – little children love to try on high heels and crazy hats.

Get outside more – there are some challenging round London walks that you could start, even with a baby in a buggy. Have a look at the Capital Ring, http://www.walklondon.org.uk
Christmas For lots more tips on thrifty, creative and eco-friendly parenting – including what to give at Christmas – see Nicola Baird’s newest book, Homemade Kids (Vermilion) or look at her Homemade Kids blog via www.nicolabaird.com
Online Shopping – if you really do want to shop for gifts this Christmas, try some of these websites that ‘give back’ or an app that shows you how ethical your purchases are.
Big Blue Cuddle – has a way of giving twice: to a child and to a charity. They are an online children's clothes store which, thanks to the support of their suppliers, donates up to 50% of what you spend to the children’s charity you pick. Each gift bought on their site will therefore support a charity and they will tell your friend in a note that comes with the gift which charity you chose to receive the donation on their behalf. www.bigbluecuddle.com
The Giving Machine – TheGivingMachine is a great, easy and free way for you to raise money for your school, or a favourite charity without having to spend a penny more than you would normally. All you have to do is register online with www.TheGivingMachine.co.uk and nominate your school or charity. Then every time you shop online with your usual retailers such as Amazon, ebay, John Lewis, Next, Boden, Tesco – in fact over 360 of the UK's leading retailers, simply click on TheGivingMachine first and your school will get a free donation from the retailer. It won't cost you anymore and you don't have to buy anything you wouldn't normally buy. Just keep on shopping online as you do already, via TheGivingMachine and you'll be raising money at the same time- it really is that easy. www.TheGivingMachine.co.uk barcoo is a new free mobile phone app designed to empower ethical consumers, as well as encourage a new generation of ethical shoppers. By using the camera on a mobile phone to scan a product barcode, barcoo not only shows you a price comparison, it also tells you if the brand applies social responsibility to the manufacturing of its products. In addition to the manufacturer’s ethical profile, barcoo also provides nutritional information on food products. barcoo is the ideal shopping companion. It gives complete real-time transparency, enabling shoppers to make more informed purchasing decisions. www.barcoo.com
Celebrate gratitude – when the chaos of Christmas Day is over take a moment to be thankful for everything we have and everything we have done and can do. Teach your children the meaning of gratitude and ask them to write (and why not make?) thank you cards to those who showed them how much they meant to them over the Christmas break. It should keep them busy well into the New Year!

Jolly Phonics By Joanna Parry
Checks for two-year-olds Under new Government plans to spot children who are failing to develop properly, all two-year-olds will be given a compulsory “progress check”. Two-year-olds in England will be assessed to discover whether they can use certain basic words, respond to familiar sounds, communicate their wants and socialise with others, as part of an Early Years Foundation Stage framework setting out to identify struggling children. All parents will be given a written report of their child’s abilities in these key areas, with Ministers claiming that this will help to identify any early developmental problems. They are concerned that too many children are starting school without the necessary basic social and language skills, and Sarah Teather, Liberal Democrat Minister for Children, said “the importance of the early years – as a foundation for life and for future attainment and success – cannot be overestimated. That’s why it’s vital we have the right framework to support high quality early years education.” However, Richard House, senior lecturer in psychotherapy at Roehampton University, says “Children are so diverse that to even begin constructing some generalised view of how they should be developing at a certain age is fraught with danger.” He goes on to state that the move risked defining children as "failures" at a young age.
Les Chatons opens new nursery Les Chatons is opening a new bi-lingual nursery in Inverness Place, W2 in the new year for children aged 1-5. The Kensington Gardens Nursery School will teach children in French and English and the Spanish Nursery School will teach in Spanish and English. Parents will be offered both part and full-time sessions for their children. Les Chatons is a group of bi-lingual nurseries school established in 1996, that include The French Nursery school in south Kensington and The Belgravia Nursery school in Knightsbridge. The 'Jolly Phonics Activity Books 1-7' are filled with colouring pages, writing practice, games, puzzles, anagrams and other fun activities that will help children to learn the 42 letter sounds and practice reading and writing. The 'Jolly Phonics Games CD' is a collection of interactive, fun games which enable children to practice the 5 skills taught in Jolly Phonics. It is ideal for children to use on their own, and has three levels – Easy, Medium and Hard, to match children's stage of learning and revision. They are available from www.jollylearning.co.uk
Debate continues on literacy teaching methods A new report has been published with MPs claiming that the focus on phonics in schools will turn reading for children into a “dull exercise”. They are concerned that children will be turned off reading by the Government’s new literacy drive and the Coalition policies that have been designed to make schools use back-tobasics teaching methods. In order to improve literacy in England, the Government want primary schools to use synthetic phonics, with children sitting a ‘phonics test’ after only one year at school. However, the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Education is claiming in its report that too much emphasis on this method could affect pupils’ learning and lead to a decline in literacy. They also claim they are joined in this opinion by the education establishment. According to the latest figures, around 16 per cent of children leave primary school without being able to read to an acceptable level, with one-in-10 boys having only the reading skills of a seven-year-old. “Literacy is the key to the curriculum,” said Fabian Hamilton, Labour MP and chairman of the Parliamentary group. “Pursuing phonics without considering whether pupils can comprehend what they’re reading, and without paying any attention to whether children enjoy reading, will switch children off. Learning to read – especially a complex language like English – cannot be reduced to a mechanical process.” However, Nick Gibb, the Schools Minister, has rejected the group’s conclusions, saying “High-quality evidence from across the world shows that the systematic teaching of synthetic phonics is the best way to teach basic reading skills, and especially those aged five to seven.”

Unique and Special
I have recently been coaching some wonderful parents who have a child with ADHD and as a former teacher of many children with unique and different needs, I have been exploring with them how to handle the painful and often overwhelming feelings associated with dealing with the diagnosis that their child is different. Children who are unique need your parenting approach to be individual, flexible and creative as well as consistent and clear because they have different needs to other children and this can be very stressful for you as a parent.
By Sue Atkins
"Special needs" is often commonly defined by what your child can't do – by milestones unmet, foods banned, activities avoided and experiences denied. These minuses can hit you as a family really hard and may make "special needs" seem like a tragic designation or a millstone around everyone’s neck. But I believe that a label should not limit a child’s potential and I see every child as a way to find a new opportunity to explore their potential in a new or different way that hasn’t yet been tried.
What is unique and special? "Special Needs" is like an umbrella sheltering and hiding a huge collection of diagnoses underneath. Children with “special” or “different” needs may have trouble paying attention, profound mental retardation or be gifted, or they may have a food allergy, be terminally ill or have a stammer. The vastness of the term can be confusing and bewildering.
I have worked and trained with Dr Richard Bandler – the co-creator and founder of NLP when I was training to become an NLP Master Practitioner and Trainer. He is an extraordinary man who challenges accepted ways of doing things and stereotyped labels as he is curious and fascinated by different and new ways to explore the way the brain works and how it can be improved and fine-tuned to enable everyone to reach their true potential. After the initial shock of discovering your child is unique and special, gently and slowly change your focus from one of despair to gently and gradually starting to see it as an opportunity to learn how to help you and your child to explore and discover more about themselves.
Dealing with the diagnosis that your child is different The diagnosis is useful for getting the support or services your child needs and it is helpful in setting appropriate goals and gaining understanding that your child has a unique talent or unique need, but I think it is worth pointing out that the diagnosis may come as shock or a relief to you and that whatever your reaction it is perfectly normal – some of you will have known from an early stage that your child was different, but for others of you it may be years before you guessed it and it may have taken you many visits to professionals to receive a clear diagnosis and for you to accept the new situation. Here are some tips that you may find useful in the weeks and months ahead after receiving the news of a diagnosis for the first time: •
Give yourself time to come to terms and to develop an understanding of what this diagnosis means for you, your child and your family.
•
Avoid making any rash or major decisions in the weeks following the diagnosis.
•
If you need to, do seek another appointment with the professional who gave you the diagnosis so you can ask more questions.
•
Before any consultations decide what you want from the meeting and jot down any questions you have – it’s very easy to forget them during a meeting. Don't forget to make a note of the answers.
•
If you can't go to meetings together do take a friend or relative if you want support and another pair of ears to help you remember want was said.
•
The diagnosis may affect each of you as parents differently – while one of you may be able to accept the diagnosis, the other may feel that it is not correct and continue searching for alternative explanations for your child's difficulty – that’s why it’s important to give yourself time and discuss all the decisions made about your child.
* Remember: Giving a child a label can limit them. Some parents will always focus on the difficulties and grieve their child's lost potential compared to others, but I challenge you to see beyond the diagnosis – to become a family who sees your child's challenges as making their triumphs even sweeter and your child’s apparent “weaknesses” always being balanced by their amazing strengths.

•
Be aware that there will be mixed reactions from your family and friends to the news of the diagnosis – some are very supportive or some are very hurtful and distressing.
•
Educate yourself about the condition that is affecting your child – use all the sources of information available to you – library, Internet, other parents, organisations – knowledge is power.
•
Do seek a second opinion on the diagnosis if you feel the diagnosis you have received is flawed.
•
Get to know the professionals in your area. Who are they? Where are they based? Do they work as a team or individually? Try to get to know the team that is dealing with your child and build a relationship with them.
•
Begin to keep notes of all your meetings with the professionals you are working with and if a professional is compiling a report on your child ask for a copy to keep with your records.
•
Many parents I’ve worked with find it very helpful and supportive to be involved with the organisation or support group that represent children and families with similar special needs. I know making the initial contact can be a very big and frightening step but remember these groups can be a source of fantastic ongoing help and support. When you are ready, do make contact. You are not alone - and it helps to know that.
How a Diagnosis Affects You It’s perfectly normal to grieve after hearing a diagnosis and most parents experience a reaction similar to a feeling of bereavement – because while of course you love your child whether they have special needs or not, it is important to acknowledge that you have suffered the loss of a child who may have followed a custo mary path of development. Of course, the presence of a child with special needs in your family alters your family relationships and the way it may now function, including the closeness of parents and other siblings. However, remember these changes may be positive as well as negative. It is down to your positive attitude and mindset about how you are going to handle this challenge. That’s why I am passionate about using strategies and techniques that I’ve learnt in my 22 years as a teacher and from my years of studying NLP to help you move forward in your lives creating the happy, harmonious and fulfilling relationships and experiences that you all deserve. If you’d like to find out more about positive ways to raise children with unique and special needs, there is far more detail and resources in Chapter 14 of my book “Raising Happy Children for Dummies” which covers Dyslexia, ADD, Dyspraxia, Asperger’s Sydrome, and the gifted and talented.
