I don’t think there are many charities that could boast the level of volunteer support that we provide, which can be as high as 70,000+ hours a year. The valuable support we provide makes a measured difference to local families, many of whom need support as a result of an unfortunate twist of fate.
Most people we support tell us they wouldn’t expect to have been in the position they have found themselves in and knowing that someone is committing their precious time, skills and experience to help them, without material compensation, can be enough to help them recognise their own worth and enough to help project them onto a road of empowerment and recovery.
So I would like to say thank you to everyone who has supported Home-Start this year, by attending or volunteering at a fundraising event and helping us to fund the valuable service we provide here in Suffolk. We have put together the first issue of our new supporters magazine to share with you some of our recent activity.
With best wishes
Tara Spence, CEOIn this issue...

Home-Start offers a unique service. We recruit and train volunteers, who understand that family life can be challenging at times, to phone or visit families at home and offer them informal, friendly and confidential support. The families we phone or visit have at least one child under 12. We also support families in a range of groups throughout Suffolk.
To help give children the best possible start in life, Home-Start supports parents as they grow in confidence, strengthen their relationship with their children and widen their links with the local community.
Volunteers may help families with isolation and loneliness, mental health or post- natal depression, money issues and budgeting, disability and illness, routines and behaviour or any other support needed. We cannot offer this without our team of volunteers. We are lucky to have support from volunteers from a range of backgrounds and experience.
Volunteering can offer amazing opportunities, including:
• Free training courses
• Experience in offering support, which is a real asset on CVs!
• Travel expenses
• Being part of our volunteer community
• Making a difference to families in Suffolk
I have been a volunteer for Home-Start in Suffolk for a few years now and I love what I do. Many of us have experienced challenges in our home lives and know how hard, overwhelming, and isolating this can feel.
Home-Start is a selfless charity that really cares about the families it supports alongside its staff and volunteers.
The families I have been privileged to work with have been wonderful and facing a range of challenges, but I have loved every moment, building that relationship, forging that friendship and being that person they can talk to and bounce ideas off.
Really, as a volunteer I come to give parents and families time, something I am fortunate enough to have to offer and I am incredibly proud to be part of Home-Start.
It’s the little things that really make a difference.
MichelleHome-Start are a lovely, friendly, caring, and supportive team of people. I love being a volunteer because it allows me to make a real difference to people’s lives.
