Catching up on MMR

The summer holidays offer a wonderful chance for children to kick off their shoes and enjoy carefree days - which is great until they mislay their shoes, outer layers, swimming goggles etc. Ann-Maree, founder of Labels4Kids (pictured), advises parents to label everything - "because kids lose stuff! Better still, label it twice - once inside a pocket or on the care label, and once on the collar so there is no doubt who things belong to." Ann-Maree was recently invited to be a member of No 10 Downing Street EU E-Commerce task force along with ASOS to give her advice on e-commerce. Labels4Kids' own re-lauched website makes it easier for you to find your way to the right products. Choose from brilliant, named stick-on clothing labels, easy iron-on labels and woven ironon labels, vinyl labels for hard surfaces and selection packs. The MMR catch-up programme, run by Public Health England (PHE), NHS England and the Department of Health, aims to prevent measles outbreaks by vaccinating as many 10-16 year olds as possible. This age group is the most at risk of measles due to the fall in coverage of MMR that occurred in the late 1990s and early 2000s when concern around the discredited link between autism and the vaccine was widespread. The catch-up programme aims to ensure that at least 95 per cent of 10-16 year olds (about 300,000 children) have received at least one dose of MMR. The programme also wants to reach another third of a million who need a second dose of MMR to give them full protection, and a further third of a million children below and above this age band who need another dose. The most recent figures published by PHE show that the numbers of measles cases in

England are still high with 288 cases in April (compared to 175 in April 2012), bringing the total number this year to 962. However MMR coverage among five year olds in England is very high with 94 per cent receiving one dose and 90 per cent receiving two doses. Professor David Salisbury, Director of Immunisation at the Department of Health, said: "The best way to beat measles is to protect people before measles catches them. The best thing that parents can do, if their children have not had two doses of MMR, is to make an appointment with the GP now.” To find out more about vaccinations go to www.nhs.uk/Conditions/vaccinations

Best School of Acting makes its first scholarship awards St Albans-based Best School of Acting has made awards of three full scholarships in memory of local actor Philip Madoc. "Daiyaan Simeon of Harpenden, Natasha Fowler-Ekar of St Albans and Kayley Green of Welwyn Garden City all showed huge potential at our recent audition workshops and we are delighted they will be joining us as our first Philip Madoc scholars." said Lisa Schulberg, the school's Principal. Such was the talent and commitment on show at the workshop that Best felt it right to make a number of bursary offers too. Since its launch last autumn, the school has already grown close to capacity. "We wanted to attract some of the best actors that the area has to offer - those who love acting and want to be the best that they can be. So far it is proving a winning formula. It's a very

Have you experienced an iPaddy? Six in ten parents punish gadget-obsessed kids with tech bans and three quarters believe children get too attached to their gadgets. 59% of parents say they have experienced an ‘iPaddy’ when they try and forcibly end their kids’ gadget game time. Researchers at online retailer Pixmania.com found restricting use of gadgets is now the preferred form of punishment for eight out of ten parents in the UK. This new trend for tech-punishment has led to the coining of the term ‘iPaddy’, bad behaviour brought on directly from children having their gadgets confiscated. Confiscating smartphones and tablets were revealed as the most hated form

of punishment as they stopped children having contact with friends and enjoying entertainment. It comes as nearly six in ten parents have actually banned their children from playing on gadgets – or have taken them away for a period of time. The most popular tech item for children to own was a games console (owned by 46%), followed by an iPod or mp3 player (30%) and smartphone (30%). The average child was found to spend nearly two hours a day playing with tech products and over a quarter of children were revealed as using gadgets for 4+ hours per day.

Education

Surviving the Summer Slide By Janet Sherlock

Children look forward to the excitement and adventure of the summer holidays. What they do not understand is that whilst those days may relax and energise, they can also stress them academically. Recent studies have indicated that many students can go an entire summer without picking up a book. This is known as the summer slide. When children mentally go on holiday for the summer, they are often at risk of losing one to three months of education, with some dropping behind by as much as two to four national curriculum points. These students enter the classroom in September significantly behind their classmates which makes it challenging for teachers to meet the needs of their students. Parents can help to minimise this loss.

• Support learning at home You do not have to be a teacher to support your child’s learning, any experience can be turned into a learning opportunity. Have them find a book about the play they are studying at drama camp. Participation in a football or rugby camp can be turned into a journaling activity. Maths can be practised through a trip to the grocery store.

• Support learning through summer programmes Sometimes, children need more support than you can give at home. In this instance turn to an established summer school programme where learning is directed in a setting with real, live teaching, and in small classes that allow your child to receive individualised tuition. Enrolling your children in a vibrant and stimulating programme will provide an opportunity to revise learning from the previous school year, extend learning and prepare for future challenges such as entrance exams.

6

• Support learning through the library Local libraries present opportunities to participate in reading programmes, group discussions, or other literacy events. Use your local library to find grade level appropriate books and activities. Sign up to the Summer Reading Challenge (see page 11). Janet Sherlock is head tutor at Leaders are Readers, the award-winning Saturday and Summer Schools. www.leadersarereaders.co.uk

Join Explore Learning in July and get 25% off the first month’s fees!* Explore Learning centres provide maths and English tuition to 5 to 14 year olds of all abilities, and also run special courses in 11+ exam preparation. The centres are open 7 days a week, are Ofsted registered, and accept Childcare Vouchers to pay for membership. Children attend up to twice a week on a drop-in basis, meaning that sessions fit easily into busy schedules. Children work with tutors who are enthusiastic about learning and also are fantastic motivators. Each child has an individualised learning programme tailored to meet their needs, and all Explore courses are mapped to the National Curriculum. This combination of benefits has led to the company being named Supplementary Education Provider of the Year at the Education Investor Awards for the past two years. July is the most popular time of the year for families to join Explore Learning, as parents across the country look for an engaging way to keep their children’s brains active over the summer break. *Available at participating centres. Babies & Toddlers

Old Dog, New Baby You are an experienced dog owner but you will soon become an inexperienced new parent! The Dogs Trust offers useful advice to help you help your dog to adjust to this big change. • Dogs like routine so get your dog used to changes before the birth so that he won’t associate the baby with upheaval. • It’s essential that your dog associates the baby with positive feelings. If you are going to use baby gates and make some rooms ‘dog free’ start doing this before your baby is born. • Get your dog used to staying in a safe place with his bed and a tasty chew for short periods every day. There will be times when you’ll be busy with the baby, so training your pet to be happy on his own will help him cope with the changes. • Your family or health workers may encourage you to part with your dog thinking it will be easier for you. If your dog is friendly with people then you should be able to introduce your new baby to the family dog quite happily. • Involve your dog in as much family life as possible so he feels included. • To make dog walking as easy as possible use a baby sling to leave your hands free to hold the dog’s lead. • Dogs find it tricky to differentiate their toys from a baby’s, so keep the dog’s toys separate. You could smear a blob of peanut butter on them. • Being a new parent is time consuming, but always give your dog some of your undivided attention (stroke or groom him) away from the baby.

Sunshine, Vitamin D and tired tots It is important to apply sunscreen and keep babies and children out of the sun in the middle of the day, but children do need some sun to ensure healthy levels of Vitamin D. We know that a lack of Vitamin D can lead to poor bone health but a new study has found that there is a correlation between excessive daytime sleepiness and Vitamin D. The researchers found that sleepiness increased as blood levels of vitamin D decreased. According to The Department of Health, Vitamin D deficiency is a concern, particularly for pregnant women, infants and young children under five and they advise that supplements should be taken by those groups. This is because breast milk, on average, contains only 10% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin D. Other studies have shown that more vitamin D during infancy can help reduce the risk of major health concerns later on in life.

The Golden Rules

• Never leave your dog alone with your child • Never punish or shout at your dog for approaching your baby • Always praise your dog for behaving gently with your baby/child • Always keep your child well away from your dog’s food bowl • Never let your child interrupt his sleep or take away his toys • Never let your child shout in your dog’s face or pull his tail To find out more and to download the “New Baby” factsheet go to www.dogstrust.org.uk Dogs Trust works with schools to educate children about staying safe around dogs. www.learnwithdogs.co.uk

Summer Feature The Big Summer Holiday

- Tips for Travellers By Robina Cowan

Yippee! It’s the break we’ve all been dreaming of and looking forward to through the dank winter and spring months – here comes this year’s summer holiday. Hands up who remembers when it was just you and your beloved, grabbing a cheap deal, filling a backpack at the last minute and heading for the sun? Those were the good old days... Now you’re a family, there’s a third ‘p’ to add to ‘passport and packing’ – ‘planning’. Here at Families (now a mighty group of 40 local magazines), the editors have children spanning all ages from three months to the early twenties, so you could say we’ve been there, done that. We put our heads together to pool our experience and best ideas for you. Happy travelling! BEFORE YOU GO * Label your child’s clothes, towels and backpacks, especially if you will be using kids’ clubs – they WILL go missing. Labels 4 Kids (www.labels4kids.com/fam) and Easy 2 Name (www.easy2name.com) both stock packs of instant labels so the job’s a breeze and it’s a much cheaper solution than replacing lost items. They also have ID wristbands so you can label the children with your contact details * Use Google Street View with the children to look round your planned location and help get familiarised with the landscape, ‘foreign’ signs and local attractions.

10

* Photocopy everyone's passport and keep the copies in a different place. If the originals go missing, proof that you had passports will make it much easier to tussle with overseas authorities when it's time to come home * Have up to date pictures of your children on your phone - if they go missing you can show authorities what they look like * Freeze food to await your return - even fresh milk can be frozen - so you don't come home to an empty kitchen. Some very organised mothers even do an online shop towards the end of their holiday, for delivery on their first day home. Now, that's organisation! * Lost luggage is a nightmare. Rather than filling one suitcase per person, pack a couple of daytime and evening outfits for everyone in each case so you can all get started while the hotel/airline tracks down the missing bag * Involve your children in the packing even if just a small part is their responsibility. It occupies them while you are busy and gets them into the holiday mood. Then check their choices: you may find fancy dress costumes and nothing sensible (OK, I admit this is from experience!) * Add a small ‘emergency bag’ to your hand luggage, with plasters, tissues, sachets of paracetamol, cotton wool, needle and thread, safety pins, wetwipes and a few sweets (for bribing and wiping away tears). Oh the

© mangostock - Fotolia.com

satisfying feeling to have what you need just at the right time! * Pack spare clothes in your hand luggage in case of ‘accidents’ * Leave a spare set of keys with a friendly neighbour in case of home emergencies, losing yours or locking yourself out (I’ve done that just when we were about to leave!) * Cancel the newspapers and ask your friendly neighbour to return the wheelie bins to your property on collection day, so you’re not advertising an empty home.

ON THE WAY * Long car journeys are not all about being plugged into gadgets. Try story tapes - as a family, we are all totally addicted to the ‘How to Train your Dragon’ series. The ‘Michelin I-Spy’ activity books are great fun, as are the free downloads from www.rac.co.uk/advice/ car-knowledge/top-ten/car-games/. * For flights, Usborne’s ’50 Things do on a Plane’ will keep them occupied, rrp £5.99, while the Top Trumps range is great for older children, especially if you're willing to join in

* Flying is the one time I am relaxed about screen time - if you have electrical gadgets, use them. Make sure you have some child friendly headphones to hand so as not to 'share' your child's love of Peppa Pig with the entire plane * Sucky sweets (as they are known in our house) are great for little ones who struggle with their ears on take off. Give babies a bottle (or breastfeed) to stop their ears popping * Planes can be chilly and children won't relax if they're not cosy so pack an extra layer for the flight. * If your child is crying on the flight, don't panic. Most passengers will be either parents or grandparents and will have sympathy for you. Your priority is settling your child in the best way you can. If your child has a favourite teddy or comfort blanket, make sure it's in your hand luggage. It may help calm them and that in turn will calm you.

Summer Events & Activities PSST...

Explore the

Perform Summer Experience Perform are offering a 10% discount to our readers if they quote Families Magazine when booking!

WHILE YOU'RE THERE * Resist the temptation to Facebook your day's antics - you're advertising that you are away and your home's empty. Not a good idea * When packing to come home, check the back of every drawer, cupboard and even under the beds for favourite toys that might be lurking unseen. Have a quick rifle through the hotel/resort Lost Property box for mislaid hats/t-shirts etc (patting yourself on the back for labelling them beforehand).

WHEN YOU RETURN * Take your holiday laundry for a service wash - it's a small price to pay for not having to sort, wash and dry all those gritty beach towels and sunscreen covered t-shirts.

AND FINALLY Work on a 70:30 ratio. Holidays are not effortless when you have children, just as life at home is not effortless. If you can enjoy 70% of the time you are away together, that's a result. 30% will be about tantrums, tiredness and bad moods. But if you come home knowing that for most of the time, you relaxed, laughed and enjoyed the time spent together as a family, it's been a success!

On 4th August 1213 in St Albans, Churchmen and barons, led by Stephen Langton the Archbishop of Canterbury, held their first meeting to discuss their grievances against King John.
