Welcome Back… It’s been a difficult few weeks in the Butters house. Eliza and her Year 2 pals have been preparing for the groundbreaking production of ‘Minibeast Madness’. First there were the auditions. My youngest Drama Queen had identified a few roles she was keen to secure including the rather fitting Queen Bee and the less attractive unnamed dung beetle. However top of her list was a spider called Daisy. “Daisy gets to do a really funny dance. She’s hilarious. Everyone wants to be Daisy,” explained Eliza excitedly. My children have provided me with some wonderful memories on their schools’ stages. Who can forget Isobel as Mary in the 2007 nativity during which she grabbed the baby Jesus by the feet from Joseph, stuffing him under her chair with the word “MINE”. Then there was Eliza’s transformation into Eddie the Penguin which led to her spending the summer eating a fish only diet,“Because I am a real penguin Mummy.” Still, Daisy the Spider sounded harmless enough and while not the starring role, it was the role my pint size performer wanted. So the day came when the roles were cast and I arrived at school with bated breath. “I got it. I’m Daisy,” said Eliza as she raced out of the classroom. “I hope you’re OK with it,” said her teacher. “She was very good. She says she just pretended to be you!” “Super,” I replied laughing nervously. I’d never thought about myself as an eight legged arachnid although a trip to the waxing parlour does beckon. As we began the journey home I decided to ask how I had inspired the successful audition for Daisy. “Because she’s tipsy. Daisy the tipsy spider drinks cider. I just danced like you did at your birthday party. That’s what I told Mrs White.” And so another piece of my dignity is lost thanks to my beautiful daughter. At least there’s only a few weeks left of the school’s staff looking at me like the local lush before the summer holidays. I’ll let you know how authentic her performance is but she had better thank me when it comes to Oscar time. Enjoy your summer break!

Learn French with CAMEMBEAR… Meet Camembear – the furry friend of French teacher and local mum Leanne Jefferson. With his help she hopes to kick up a stink about learning French in our local nurseries and primary schools. Mum of 3 Leanne has developed an innovative user-friendly programme to teach the language to Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage One, using her French friend Camembear. Nurseries across Yorkshire are already using it to teach the language to their pupils. “The special feature of this learning resource is Camembear,” explains Leanne. “He’s a cute and cuddly French-speaking teddy bear puppet who motivates children to speak French and interact with him. This programme is very easy to follow and will enhance what nurseries and schools offer to children and also their families.” If you’re interested in getting your nursery or school involved, email Leanne Jefferson at enquiries@headstartlanguages.co.uk or call 0845 5194 881 • www.headstartlanguages.co.uk

The ➚
Diary of a
IMPERFECT MUM…
THE WORLD
DAD… Families Leeds columnist Claire Bottomley is relieved to discover she’s still the centre of her son’s world I read somewhere that a child’s behaviour improves during the second half of the year. How ridiculous, I thought, crossly, as I picked my way through the detritus covering our living room and shouted at my son for the hundredth time to please, STOP JUMPING. OFF. THE. SOFA! If only the mere fact that it was the latter end of the annual calendar could improve matters, I mused, as I grated secret vegetable matter into bolognaise and soaked stains out of school shirts. My child will argue black is white and displays international-level negotiating skills when it comes to getting his own way, I brooded as I changed the baby’s nappy. But the worst part is the favouritism. “When will Daddy be home?” Five little words I’ve heard more times than is good for me. I doubt that waiting six months and hoping for the best would see me regain the affection and enthusiasm that now seems to be saved exclusively for his father, I mused bitterly. As I did the 3am feed, a dark thought nagged: Is that it? Are mother and son growing apart now he’s reached the ripe old age of four-and-three-quarters? Then, finally, the sun shone, and we went outside. Safe in his buggy, the baby was content so long as his older brother was in view. Suddenly we were a happy band on the move. “Mummy I’m really good at climbing now”, said the boy, showing me his admittedly impressive skills in the adventure playground, before inviting me to join him in the ‘den’. “Mummy, look what I’ve found!” he shouted as we rummaged around in rock-pools, with great mutual respect for how many sea anemones each of us could spot. A man in an ice-cream van complimented his good manners. I watched him be helpful to a friend, and enjoyed some interesting philosophical conversations, as well as lots of laughs. He waved at me on sports day, and when he won his running race, I cried. Maybe there is something in the half-the-year theory after all, I thought – and not just when it comes to children’s behaviour. It was a long winter. Like the seasons, our family and the relationships in it are always changing. As we stroll along and he slips his hand in mine, I think that like the sunny summer’s day, I must savour it, every step.
Our Dad columnist Jim Cardwell reflects on the pros and cons of ‘helpful’ children. My fun-loving daughter, Little Miss Fidget, has joined a cult. It’s called the Brownies. Boys need not apply. In my small way I have been helping with her indoctrination. I am watching out for signs of behaviour change associated with this new interest in her life. There is a book in the Brownie induction pack. My part was in the reading out of the Brownie Story contained therein. In short, I read that Brownies are encouraged to do good turns. I learn that these involve doing helpful things like tidying up without being asked. That’s all good stuff except for the twist in the tail when I, and my daughter, read on to learn that tidying up is really quite fun. I’m not convinced; but thankfully, the Fidget has lapped it up without challenge as yet. Personally, I believe that a cocktail of praise and financial reward are a more effective method to encourage the offer of helpfulness. Of course, offering help is not the same as being helpful. A recent example occurred following the arrival of our new shed. Or to be more precise, a flat pack of wooden bits unceremoniously dumped outside the house, waiting for dad to work his magic. The Short Suffering Wife duly added this to the weekend task list and one sunny Saturday morning I tooled up ready for action. This was the moment that the Fidget chose to insist on helping. I had visions of an Amish-style barn raising. Of course, the actual event was a lot more suburban and the small lean-to shed was not really in the same league. The innocence of youth meant that my seven-year-old assistant had no preconceptions, or indeed as it happened, patience. For after the insertion of the first two screws, she was gone, only to re-appear at what felt like five-minute intervals over the course of the next four hours to enquire about the estimated finishing time. Upon completion, cue excited daughter and slightly older brother then enjoying the new space before it could be filled with the garden junk. So how helpful was that? Well, I thought it was a good result with daughter given a bite-sized lesson in the dark arts of DIY, satisfaction for me in that the job was no longer than it needed to be and no child was hurt in the making of this shed. My kind of assistance.

HIS enchanting children’s clothes and toy store in the centre of Ilkley is a treasure trove of bright colours, fun fabrics and adorable baby grows. Tucked away in the corner of a busy car park, you’re invited inside by a line of bright vintage flags which guide you to the front door and into the world of Herbert and Stella. The shop is about to celebrate its 1st birthday and for owner Christine Asher it’s been quite a journey. “It’s been a massive learning curve, says Christine. “I love choosing all these beautiful outfits. I love it when customers come in and enjoy the products I’ve picked. There really is nothing like seeing a child walking or being pushed round Ilkley in one of our outfits. I love that! Retail was not Christine’s first career. She spent 5 years studying Chinese Medicine before moving to China to practice. When she returned, she set up a practice here in West Yorkshire specializing in fertility treatment. Despite much success, Christine found the pressure of her job too much following the birth of her own daughter. “After I had Romilly three years ago, I went back to practice. I was treating patients while my daughter was in the room and I think I just put myself under too much pressure and I made myself ill. After a period of Post Natal Depression, Christine’s husband came home with a gift that helped her overcome her illness and also give her the inspiration to consider a new career. “He bought me a sewing machine, explains Christine. “It was the perfect distraction and got me focusing on a project and I think doing something creative helped give me my confidence back. After using her sewing machine to create an interactive Wendy House for her daughter, Christine started making her own children’s outfits. She saw a gap in the market in Ilkley for a shop providing good quality, affordable children’s clothing and so began looking into opening her own. From there Herbert and Stella was born and it’s now a popular venue for parents looking for something a little bit different. “We stock some beautiful brands. Frugi and Mini Rodini are my favourite, but we also have Boys & Girls, Lilly and Sid, Albetta and Mayoral. We try and find modern items but they’re still children’s clothes. I don’t like seeing children dressed as mini adults. My clothes mean they are dressed as children. There’s an outfit to suit every taste and every budget. From t-shirts decorated with brightly coloured parrots to baby grows
sporting a scene from your favourite fairy tales, it’s hard to make a choice. Christine loves the selection of clothes she has in store but looks forward to a time she can add her own range of Herbert and Stella clothing. “I’ve had my first commission from a customer, she explains. “Now I’ve made it through my first year and all I’ve had to learn, I have the time to be more creative again. Herbert and Stella is on 23b Brook Street, Ilkley LS29 8AA www.herbertandstella.co.uk 01943 968 954

MUMSPACE WHERE: MOTHERCARE, CROWN POINT RETAIL PARK
||It’s Wednesday morning and Samantha|| ||Dalton from Flutterbabies is packing away|| ||after another busy baby yoga session.|| ||It’s the second week she’s held a class at|| ||Mothercare’s Mumspace at Crown Point|| ||Retail Park.|| It’s an unusual venue for a class but in many ways it’s the perfect place for parents to head with their little one. Downstairs there’s shopping opportunities galore. Upstairs is Leeds’ newest class venue. This is only the third Mumspace created by Mothercare in the UK with five more planned. The idea is simple, according to Leeds Customer Relations Manager Debbie Tonks. “Mumspace is a place mums can come to socialise, get support from other mums, enjoy a new class and join the popular groups we have going on here. And it’s all in the heart of a Mothercare store which is full of expert advice.â€? There’s a great spread of classes making use of the Mumspace community room. From Diddi Dance on a Monday to Rugrats Rugby on a Friday, the week is filled with activities for families. For pregnant women there’s antenatal sessions on a Monday evening. For new mums there’s post natal fitness classes and for new borns, baby yoga and baby massage. The Mumspace timetable is filling fast. “I sat down and thought of all the different support parents would need,â€? explains Debbie. “From pregnant mums to the parents of school age children, there is a session for everyone at Mumspace!â€? Samantha Dalton from Flutterbabies says the mums she’s had in the classes here are impressed with the space, and can’t believe the transformation the Crown Point Mothercare has undergone. “It’s a clean, airy and open room infact the whole store feels light and airy!â€? says Samantha. “What’s really great is that the parents can use the new cafĂŠ to meet after the classes so the social aspect carries on over a cup of tea. It means mums are supporting each other after the sessions have finished – you don’t get that at a church hall!â€? The new cafĂŠ is Tea Monkey, a funky tea room that’s run by Michelle Wilkinson. There’s 40 teas to choose from and there’s healthy organic food for both mums and their children. It’s become the cafĂŠ of choice for local groups looking for a child friendly venue, as well as the mums looking for a brew after a morning class at Mumspace. “Most cafes are child tolerant but we are pro child,â€? explains Michelle. “We host Bosom Buddies breast feeding group, an alternative mums group and a local mum and tot group whose village hall is undergoing a refurb. Everyone’s welcome!â€?
Mothercare is keen to give something back to the local community. They’re providing groups with toys and craft items for use in the Mumspace room and are looking to work with local children’s centres. There’s also plans to expand the timetable of classes from September with Baby Ballet joining up. This is something everyone wants to be part of. “Mumspace has turned a store into a community, says Michelle from Tea Monkey,“and we are delighted part of that community. For more information on the Mumspace sessions email mumspace.leeds@mothercare.com 0113 244 0555 MUMSPACE TIMETABLE MONDAY:

ASK the OCTO ? Staying Safe in the Sun Families Leeds welcomes back Dr Georgina Hudson, Children’s Hospital Doctor here in West Yorkshire. In our Summer issue, she tackles the issue of sun safety. What do we need to be safe in the sun? We are big fans of ‘slip, slop, slap, seek and slide’ in our house. This is one of the most successful health campaigns in Australia’s history. ‘Sid the Seagull’ sings the ‘slip, slop, slap song’. It’s great to teach children what to do, then they’ll remind us to ‘slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek some shade and slide on your sunglasses’. All together now‌
Sunscreen. What factor? How much? Can we use last years? It’s so important to protect your child’s skin from the sun to prevent sun burn but also to prevent heat exhaustion. Always check the expiry date on the bottle, as the SPF does decrease with age. An SPF of at least 30+ should be used. The higher the SPF, the more protection you’re giving your child. Apply at least twenty minutes before going into the sun, liberally and to dry skin. You should reapply every two hours. Broad spectrum sunscreens are the best as they protect against UVA and UVB rays. The SPF is the amount of UVB protection. The star rating from 0 – 5 is the UVA protection. The higher the stars the better the rating. It is definitely worth investing in a good quality sunscreen.

Do waterproof suntan creams work and what do children with eczema use? Even if your suntan cream claims to be waterproof it is always safer to reapply after getting wet. The sun is at its most harmful at midday, so try and keep babies and young children in the shade between 11am and 3pm. A hat should be worn ideally with a broad brim, that shades face, neck and ears. Some children are allergic to sunscreen. If you are concerned about this, just apply it to a small area of skin first to see if any reaction occurs. If your child has eczema and uses steroids or emollients on their skin, it’s best to wait about 30 minutes after applying these before applying sun screen.
Anything else to stay safe in the sun? Fluids. It’s so important to keep babies and children well hydrated in the sun. If you are breast feeding your baby it is not necessary to give your baby supplementary water, but they may breast feed more than usual, and it is obviously important to keep yourself well hydrated to maintain good milk supply. Bottle fed babies can have an extra bottle of cooled boiled water. Older children will need encouragement to drink plenty and will enjoy making their own ice lollies, to help keep hydrated.
If sunburn does occur give your child regular paracetamol or ibuprofen to ease the inflammation of the skin. After sun or calamine lotion may also help. If blisters develop or if your child appears unwell go to your GP or local A&E. Heat stroke can be a serious condition. Signs to look out for include fainting, dizziness, confusion and nausea. Try and cool your child down with wet flannels, a cool bath and hydrate with plenty of water. Remember to seek medical help early if you have serious concerns or if your child’s symptoms do not quickly improve.
Can a bit of sun be good for us? If we remember to ‘slip, slop, slap’ yes of course the sun is good for our children. They go outside more, run around, swim, ride their bikes, generally be active. We also get most of our vitamin D from sunlight on our skin. Vitamin D is essential to keep our teeth and bones healthy by regulating the amount of calcium and phosphate we have in our bodies. If children are deficient in vitamin D this causes rickets. This is why it is important that children play outside and eat a healthy balanced diet. For more information visit www.besunaware.com

N
OT a day goes by without parents being told the country is facing an obesity crisis. This combined with the news that 1/3 of our children think that cheese comes from plants and fish fingers come from chicken has made one Yorkshire company take action. Stir Krazy Kids has been running holiday workshops and cooking parties for more than a year, teaching basic skills through themed cooking days at venues across Leeds. Now Cathie Reuben and her business partner Sarah Crennell are working with schools to launch Cookacademies. “We want to build confidence, teach basic cooking skills and use the knowledge children have gained from across the National Curriculum,” explains Sarah who’s a qualified primary school teacher. “We want them to be reading recipes, following instructions, weighing, measuring and making nutritious family food.” Most parents want to get their children cooking and eating healthy food, but busy lives get in the way. Working parents don’t have the time to spend an hour in the kitchen co-creating a Coq au Vin once everyone has been collected from their after school activities. As a working mother, Cathie Reuben appreciates that time is limited and says this is about making the time to learn how to cook in school. “I think there’s a lost generation when it comes to cooking,“ says Cathie. “We want to teach the children with that element of fun. I’m not talking about making cupcakes and topping pizzas. We save that for our birthday parties! The Cookacademy is about teaching children practically about food and nutrition. We want them to come out of school with a Shepherd’s Pie they can eat with their family that night.”
Cathie and Sarah say the response from headteachers has been positive. With a little over a year to go before the changes to the National Curriculum, there’s bound to be more interest in the classes Stir Krazy can offer. As well as providing practical cooking skills and nutritional education, the Cookacademy programme is a great compliment to the existing curriculum. It asks children to draw on reading skills, as well as the skills they’ve learnt in science and maths. This compliments the classroom and enhances the school experience, according to Cathie. ”We are putting the focus on a lifeskill. Families are struggling at the moment and everyone is looking for a way to get 2 or 3 meals out of a dish. I’d like to think we are trying to save that lost generation of chefs, showing them how to make something that can feed their family for several days, showing them that eating processed food is not the cheaper option. Hopefully if we educate these children, they will take that message home.” The aim of Cookacademy is to help our children make healthier choices by learning to cook and inspiring the family chefs of the future. “We want to find the next Jamie Oliver, the next NIgella.” says Cathie. “We’re looking to stir up some passion in our children.” To find out more about getting Cookacademy in YOUR school, contact Cathie on 07725 083 959 or email: info@stirkrazykids.co.uk • www.stirkrazykids.co.uk

We’re supporting JOSEPH’S JOURNEY There are some stories that stop you in your tracks and make you count your blessings. The story of Leeds schoolboy Joseph Lillywhite is one such story. Families Leeds is supporting his campaign and we’d like you all to join us. This is his story, in the words of his mum Helen.

“Joseph is a typical 5 year old boy – full of energy and mischief – or he was until the beginning of this year. He was diagnosed with high risk stage 4 Neuroblastoma on 23rd January and was given a 40% chance of survival. The news completely floored me, his Dad Mark and his little sister Grace. Joseph had been a well child all his short life and he only fell ill just after Christmas. It was then doctors found a large tumour wrapped around his adrenial gland and kidney. They also found cancer in his bone marrow and in some of his bones. Joseph is a fighter. He copes with everything the doctors throw at him. He knows he has cancer but he doesn’t understand what that really means which we are thankful for. We drip feed what he needs to know so we can prepare him for the procedures he faces but we do it gradually. He’s having his treatment at Leeds General Infirmary with a fantastic team. It’s a long road. He’s had initial chemotherapy to shrink his tumour and clear his bone marrow. He’s had major surgery to remove the primary tumour which took 8 hours and he’s recovered well from that. Now Joseph’s undergoing high dose chemotherapy which involves him being pumped with drugs in an isolation unit as his white blood cells will be killed along with his bone marrow. This will make him very unwell and at risk of infection. It’s a scary part of the treatment as once his bone marrow has been killed off, doctors will introduce his frozen stem cells to grow new bone marrow. These next few weeks are very hard for our whole family. Mark and I take it in turns to stay at the hospital while balancing very little time with one year old Grace. Mark is also working full time as we still have bills to be paid. We hope to bring Joseph home at the end of July if all the treatments go well so we can celebrate his and Grace’s birthday in August. I can’t explain the desperation of trying to help your child, knowing there is very little we can do. The support we’ve had so far has meant the world to us. People have been so generous with their time and their money. The money we are raising with the charity NCCA is to help Joseph should he relapse at the end of his treatment. Unfortunately more often than not, children with high risk Neuroblastoma do relapse because it’s such an aggressive cancer. In the UK there is no relapse treatment so the fight can quickly be lost. In Germany and America there are treatments but they cost a lot of money. The money we raise will help support treatment abroad for Joseph and children like him should he relapse. It’s hard to explain the constant agony and grief you feel while watching your son be in pain and not be able to stop the hurt. Every night I cry myself to sleep thinking about Joseph’s future. I watch people’s lives move on – days out, birthdays, holidays – and I wish I could take all this pain away from him and let him have that normality. I’d like to ask the readers of Families Leeds to please help Joseph in any way they can. You can donate money, you can fundraise for us or you can simply ‘like’ our Facebook page “Joseph Lillywhite’s Journey. We NEED your help in so many ways so we can reach our fundraising target. You can donate by visiting: www.justgiving.com/josephlillywhite. How safe is your HOLIDAY CAMP? Schools nearly out and the holidays are nearly here so it’s time to check out the great camps and workshops on offer to keep your little one busy. But does your camp provide a safe and caring environment? Suzanne Kaye Vaughan from Fantasy Kids Camps has put together an essential camp check list for parents helping you make sure your camp is everything that you wish for…
IIIS YOUR CAMP APPROPRIATE FORII IIYOUR CHILD?II
IIDOES THE CAMP HAVE ADEQUATEII IISTAFF RATIOS PER CHILD?II
An engaged child is a happy child. Find a camp that your child is excited to go to but make sure the content is appropriate. Children’s needs and welfare should be promoted through appropriate activities and play, which develop children’s emotional, physical, social and intellectual capabilities. Make sure there’s a varied timetable. All Fantasy Kids Clubs are designed to keep our little ones busy every second of the day and the timetable allows children to participate at a level that they feel comfortable with. Children have a range of interests and complete tasks at different speeds so look for a flexible daily structure and high staff ratios so that your child’s needs are catered for.
Staff ratios range depending on the age of the children attending. Based on OFSTED guidelines the majority of childcare settings should adhere to the following recommended adult to child ratios.
IIARE THE STAFF QUALIFIED TO LOOKII IIAFTER MY CHILD?II It is the responsibility of those hosting, planning or providing your camp to ensure that those running the activity are suitable to do so. Ask: n Are all staff fully CRB checked? n Do they have appropriate insurance for all activities? n Do they have a safeguarding children policy? n Do they have emergency and medical procedures in place? n Do they have appropriate qualifications for the activities being delivered? n Is there at least one First Aider present at all times? It is also important that your camp has a Health & Safety Procedure in place along with up to date risk assesments. At Fantasy Kids Clubs we encourage our parents to ask us about our safety procedures as every child’s safety is our number one priority.
IIIS THE CAMP REGISTERED WITH OFSTED?II Holiday care providers are not all required to be fully registered with OFSTED. However, like Fantasy Kids Clubs, holiday care providers can be on the Voluntary OFSTED Register and so follow the guidelines making sure they provide a safe environment for your little one.

IICAMP CHECKLISTII 1. Be prepared… Make sure your little one has appropriate clothing and footwear for all camp activities. Provide them with a coat for outdoors should the weather change and make sure they have an energy filled packed lunch. 2. Make collection arrangements… If you are not collecting your little one at the end of the day make sure you notify a member of staff. Fantasy Kids Clubs have a strict collection arrangement procedure in place and will not let little ones leave the premises without their parent/guardian unless they have been previously notified. 3. Provide your contact details… In case of an emergency it is important that your camp organisers know exactly where and how to contact you. It is also advisable to provide the contact details of another family member or friend. Make sure your camp has all of this information when you book but it is always best to check with your chosen camp staff before you leave the premises. Magical Holiday Adventures for 3 – 8 year olds. LABEL YOUR CAMP CLOTHES WITH SNAPPY TAGS If your child is off to a camp this summer, labelling their clothing is a must. However it’s a time consuming chore that most busy mums do anything to avoid. We may have found a time saving solution in the form of Snappy Tag – the one click way to label your clothing quickly and securely. No more sewing in labels or taking time ironing on adhesive tags that come off in the wash. Snappy Tags is similar to a small button and very simple to use. Makers, Say It Personally just laser etch the name you need onto the Snappy Tags. Using Permanent EtchRM laser processes they guarantee that the name won’t fade or wash off. So you always know who the garment belongs to. Families decided to put Snappy Tag to the test. Who better to ask than 11 year old Isaac from Yorkshire who needs to label his clothes for scout camp in 2 weeks’ time.
ISAAC’S VERDICT: I found out that Snappy Tags is a simple yet effective way of labelling clothes. In your Snappy Tags package you will receive a Snappy Tags applicator, your chosen tags and the tag backs. All you have to do is pop the tag into the applicator, put in the strip of backs, pick up your garment and snap it onto the label. It only takes about 30 seconds once you know what you’re doing. The good thing is that when you snap the tag and the tag back together, it doesn’t puncture a hole in the garment, so it doesn’t look all tatty. You can also reuse the snappy tags so when they are removed with special tool, you can use the same one on another piece of clothing – you only need to buy more backs. – and so would end Snappy Tags m m co re ly gh hi “I’d TES sewing!” www.snappytags.co.uk y because she HA nl ai m – um m y m

Welcome to the
TOUCH SCREEN
GENERATiON
Most parents will admit to handing a smart phone to their toddler for a moment’s peace in a traffic jam or supermarket queue. At home our children have access to the internet. There’s even an iPotty with an in-built iPad stand, for entertaining impatient toddlers.
By HANNAH HUNTER
B
UT DO WE REALLY KNOW what they are up to when they’re using these devices? Could your 5 year-old rack up £1,700 on in-app purchases, as Bristol boy Danny Kitchen did earlier this year? Have you installed a secure browser so that your kids can’t access unsuitable content? Do you know who they’re texting or emailing, or who’s contacting them? If, like me, you grew up in the 80s, your ‘screen-time’ as a child would have been limited to after-school Blue Peter watching and maybe the odd half hour playing Donkey Kong. Fast-forward to today, where the average UK home has five screens for a child to access, including TVs, computers, tablets and phones, as well as Wi-Fi available pretty much everywhere. You can see why parents are flummoxed by how best to teach their kids to navigate this technology, when it’s available 24–7. The best way to make sure you know what your children are up to is to be there when they’re playing, and take an interest in what they’re looking at. This gets harder as your children get older, but there are some basic security steps you can follow which enable older kids to have relative freedom, in a safe virtual environment.
i
CHECK THAT INTERNET BROWSERS ARE CHILD SAFE
The iPad doesn’t come with parental controls, so disable Safari in Restrictions and download a new safe browser (there are several available in the App Store that offer parental controls). Filter content according to a child's age or enter specific categories and URLs for personalised site blocking. On Android devices you can have multiple users, tailoring access appropriately – in Google Play, press Menu and select Settings, then enable Content Filtering. The Ranger Pro Safe Browser app enables you to monitor and manage your children’s Internet use.
i
KEEP YOUR PASSWORDS TO YOURSELF, TURN OFF IN-APP PURCHASING & LIMIT CHILDREN’S ACCESS TO APPS. If you are an iPad/iPhone/iPod user, keep your iTunes password safe. Then stop anyone else from using the App Store. Go to the Settings menu, tap on General, then Restrictions. Enable Restrictions and choose a PIN (not the same one used to unlock the device). Go to the Allowed Content section, and either turn In-App Purchases off completely or change the Require Password option to ‘Immediately’ rather than ‘15 minutes’. The PIN will ensure that only you can change these settings in the future. In Settings you can also turn off Game Centre (which shares data with other users), and disable social media access, Bluetooth and Location Services. Remember Airplane Mode, in Settings, effectively turns Internet access off. Children can still access movies, music games and apps and it exposes them to less radiation. The World Health Organisation has raised concerns about the levels of radiation coming from mobile phones and other wireless gadgets and they recommend limiting children’s use of such devices. The Android platform uses Sandbox Locks for younger children, which you can download to restrict access, from Toddler Lock, which makes the device show colours and shapes when tapped by chubby fingers, to apps like Flamingo Sandbox which enables you to restrict access to specific apps, lock profiles, wireless networks and system settings. App Lock is a free app that enables you to control which apps require PIN access. With all of the security jobs done, you can let your children actually enjoy using touchscreens safely! There are so many different apps out there, from learning times tables to old fashioned platform-style games, it’s hard to work out which ones are the best. Review sites can be helpful, such as kidsbestipadapps.com, which gives you a list of apps for kids, by age.
i
HERE ARE SOME OF FAMILIES’ FAVOURITE APPS: Talking Tom Cat – Toddlers (and older) can’t get enough of this silly series of talking animals, 4+. Plants vs Zombies – Keep the zombies from invading, 9+. Starwalk – Find names of the constellations stars, planets, satellites and galaxies by pointing your phone/tablet at the sky, 4+. Peppa Pig apps – Another big hit for toddlers, fun games which can be played by one or more players together, 4+. Toca – All of the Toca games are fantastic fun and beautifully designed, 4+. Nighty Night – Award winning app where you listen to a story and say goodnight to the farm animals, 4+. Cinderella – Interactive animation of the traditional story, from Nosy Crow, an independent children’s book and app publisher, 4+. Their other apps include stories by authors and illustrators such as Philip Ardagh and Axel Scheffler Cut the Rope/ Feed me Oil – 2 addictive strategy games from Chillingo, 4+.
Trust our children
TO TAKE RISKS‌
I
was talking with friends about the ‘dangerous’ things we’d do when we played out as kids. Things like the infamous tree jumping challenge. There were three grades – ‘easy peasy’, ‘bit braver’ and ‘broken arm for sure’ – no padded floors, no regulations, no supervising parents. Back then getting a pot on your arm made you into a hero (blast my good landings and strong bones!). At Eureka! we’re passionate advocates of learning through play, although we don’t want a trail of children heading to their nearest A & E! We believe learning about risk is an important part of a child’s development. When in adulthood, judgements about risk and safety are critical to being independent. When Ed Balls was Children’s Minister he said,“We mustn’t wrap our children up in cotton wool, but allow them to play outside so as to better understand the opportunities and challenges in the world around them, and how to be safe. That strikes a chord with many parents today who might want to let their children explore but are worried about safety. Play should have an element of risk, but that risk needs to be recognised and managed accordingly by providers, through playbased learning and by children themselves. Here at Eureka! our range of indoor and outdoor play areas are specifically designed to give children the freedom to explore, discover and to make quantified risks based on their own judgement of their strengths and abilities. Above all, we need to accept that it is natural and healthy for children to take risks when they play, make mistakes, have everyday adventures and test themselves and their boundaries.
So, what can we do to enable and TRUST our children to take more risks? s Take them to adventure playgrounds and parks, stand back as they climb, slide, explore and discover. s Research what’s going on in your area to encourage risky play activities such as skateboarding, rock climbing, canoeing. Play England’s interactive map has some amazing ideas: www.playengland.org.uk.
ŠJustin Leeming
Keeping kids active over the summer can involve giving them opportunities to enjoy an adventure – within boundaries. Liz Smallman is Visitor Experience Director at Eureka! The National Children’s Museum in Halifax. She considers how risky play can help our children to develop.
s Understand the benefits of risky play to children’s development. s Share acceptable risk boundaries with children. s Take risks yourself and get stuck in! Research shows that acting as role-models for risky play acts as a great motivator for children.
