Help recycle more

Research shows that many people feel like they are already recycling as much as they can. But according to data, over 26,000 tonnes of recyclable waste can be found in Surrey’s rubbish bins.

For local councils and the tax payer, recycling makes financial sense because it costs less to recycle waste than it does to dispose of it as rubbish. It’s also better for the environment as recycling generates less carbon dioxide than rubbish disposal.

Please recycle more:

• letters, envelopes, paper, card, leaflets, catalogues, brochures, magazines, junk mail, newspapers, cardboard;

• food packaging - plastic pots, tubs and trays;

• plastic bottles - shampoo, detergent and cleaning products;

• glass bottles and jars;

• metal food tins - tuna, soup, fruit, pet food etc.

New social action platform inspires young changemakers

A new generation of change-makers is being inspired to change the world with the launch of a new social action platform for school children.

SuperKind is a not-for-profit education and social action platform. The aim of the platform is to educate, inspire and empower children and young people to become change-makers and start a lifelong commitment to charitable activities.

The social change platform was set up by husband and wife, Keren Mitchell and Natasha Freeman. They were inspired by how their own children loved taking action to address the big problems that mattered to them but realised not all children were able to access the information and tools to be empowered in this way.

SuperKind has partnered with more than forty charities, including WWF, Shelter and The Trussell Trust. Its education packs are already being used in a number of schools.

Summer Success: Empowering Parents for Home Triumph

As parents, we know the school holidays bring both joy and challenges. It is knowing this that gives us the power to support our child's emotional well-being and academic progress during the summer break.

Explore the importance of emotional regulation and coregulation and learn five top tips for creating a successful home environment. We understand that emotional regulation plays a crucial role in managing our children's emotions effectively.

By modelling and teaching these skills, we create a nurturing environment where our children feel understood and supported. This strengthens our bond with them and lays the foundation for their growth and success.

During the summer holidays, emotional regulation and coregulation become even more essential. By helping our children navigate their emotions, we create an environment that supports their learning journey. Emotional regulation enhances their attention span, memory retention and problem-solving abilities, enabling them to make the most of their summer learning opportunities.

Lack of Vitamin D and miscarriage risk link

Women with low vitamin D levels are at significantly increased risk of miscarriage, a new study reveals.

Scientists say that assessing vitamin D levels and treating deficiency before conception may offer greater benefit compared to only taking vitamin D during the first trimester. They have called for more research to confirm this approach.

Led by experts at the University of Birmingham, the research team at Tommy’s National Centre for Miscarriage Research evaluated every study into the impact of Vitamin D during pregnancy, finding a significant association between vitamin D levels and the risk of miscarriage or recurrent miscarriage.

Vitamin D has only really been known for its role in late pregnancy complication but the research supports another important role for it too, which could help motivate women to take supplements early, said the authors of the study.

More info: https://bit.ly/VitaminDMiscarriage

Top tips for supporting emotional regulation this summer: Active Listening: Validate your child's emotions and help them express their feelings effectively.

Daily Routine: Create a balanced daily schedule that includes dedicated learning time, fun activities, and relaxation.

Open Communication: Create a safe space where your child feels comfortable sharing their thoughts, concerns, and needs.

Share Healthy Strategies: Teach techniques like deep breathing, mindfulness exercises, and engaging in creative outlets.

Practise Gratitude: Encourage conversations about gratitude, fostering a positive mindset and emotional well-being.

Let's empower ourselves as parents and unlock our children's summer success. By supporting their emotional regulation through co-regulation, we create a nurturing home environment that fosters their academic progress and emotional well-being.

Together, we can make this summer memorable and meaningful for our children.

For more support on how to co-regulate, check out our posts on our Instagram page @SPD Tuition and Coaching, or email spdtuitionandcoaching@gmail.com. We are here to support you in supporting your children.

PARTIES

Classic party games are the best

Forget researching the latest games for your child’s next birthday. Despite the fact that we live in a digital age, the simple truth is that children crave the classics. Here a few party games that are still enormously popular.

The Chocolate Game

The children sit in a circle and take turns to throw a dice. If they get a six they put on a hat, scarf and gloves then attempt to eat a wrapped bar of chocolate with a knife and fork. Meanwhile the other children keep on throwing the dice. When the next person throws a six, they get their turn.

Sleeping Lions

Children lie down on the floor as still and as quietly as possible pretending to be ‘sleeping lions’. A judge roams the room and any child that moves is ‘out’ and the winner is the last child ‘asleep’.

Kim’s Game

Lay a tray with a mix of objects from toy figures to random items like sticky tape or a spoon. Cover the tray with a tea towel. Allow the children a minute to look at the tray before covering it back up when they write down everything they can remember from the tray. The one who remembers the most items is the winner.

Doughnut Challenge

Hang ring doughnuts on strings. Children must attempt to eat as much of the doughnut as they can without it falling off the string – the challenge is that no hands are allowed!

Pass the Parcel

You can’t have a party without pass the parcel! Almost despite age, children still love to sit in a circle, pass that parcel around and rip off the paper when it’s their turn! A small chocolate treat for everyone is enough to get them excited plus the anticipation of a bigger ‘present’ for the winner. Party etiquette demands that the final present is won by a guest, so try to make sure the winner isn’t your child!

Looking for a party space to hire?

At our three community centres, located in Banstead, Horley and Woodhatch (Reigate) we have a wide choice of suitable spaces available that can accommodate up to 150 people with catering facilities. The rooms will be laid out to your specification before you arrive and cleared down after your departure. Room hire is available from Mon to Sun.

PARTIES

Explore top family beaches in UK

Pack the buckets, spades and picnic gear and head to one of these gorgeous beaches for an old-fashioned family day out. Each of the beaches in our list received a 2022 Blue Flag Award, international recognition of excellent water quality and safety and have seasonal lifeguard services alongside parking, toilets and food outlets.

Woolacombe, North Devon

The three mile sandy beach is popular with families looking for a traditional seaside experience. There’s a surf school, kayaking, kitesurfing and walking trails. Rockpools, burrows, a fun theme park, ice-cream kiosks, eateries and public toilets are nearby. Three large car parks offer space for three thousand cars.

A Victorian seaside resort with an iconic pier and a mix of sand and shingle, the town maintains much of its original charm. Popular activities include building sandcastles, swimming, water sports and rock pooling at low tide. Beach facilities include toilets, shops, food stands and a cliff top car park with beach access.

Cromer, Norfolk Scarborough North Bay, Yorkshire

Despite its popularity, this quintessential British seaside resort has retained much of its charm. The North Bay beach is quieter than neighbouring South Bay. The long, sandy beach is backed by sea defences, an esplanade, hills and cliffs. Brightly coloured beach huts are available to hire with crazy golf, surfing and toilets on offer. Parking is a short walk from the beach.

Burntisland Beach, Fife

Southwold, Suffolk

With its colourful beach huts, pier, lighthouse, model boating pond, shingle beach and beach groynes, Southwold offers plenty of old-fashioned seaside charm. The recently refurbished pier has loads of attractions and amenities including toilets. The beach is a quick walk to the town centre and a short promenade to the harbour area. A large car park is nearby.

Llangrannog Beach, Wales

A family-friendly ‘village beach,’ this sheltered sandy bay offers a great selection of traditional pub food, cafes or homemade ice cream at the beach cafe. As well as being ideal for all the usual seaside activities, the beach is popular for water sports, including surfing and for viewing dolphins out at sea. Parking and ‘park and ride’ available and toilets in the village.

St Ives, Cornwall

St Ives boasts six sandy beaches close to its bustling centre but Porthmeor is arguably the premier for older children who can enjoy the waves, alongside a beachside cafe and toilets. For younger children, Porthgwidden offers a sheltered sun trap with calmer waters, cafe and toilets but has no lifeguard service. Limited parking is available for both. Consider parking in St Erth and taking the short and spectacular train ride to St Ives.

Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire

A traditional seaside holiday resort with long, firm, flat golden sand beaches and donkey rides, funfair, paddle boating, crazy golf, bicycle hire and more. Events are held regularly on the beach, including sandcastle contests, fireworks, bike racing and illuminations switch-on. The promenade has cafés, toilets and beach supplies. Car park runs parallel to the beach.

The stretch of sand and rock beach overlooking the Firth of Forth has loads to appeal to families. When you tire of sandcastle building, there are rockpools to explore; and a short stroll away, the Seaside Park has crazy golf, bouncy castle and an annual summer fairground. Amenities include toilets and picnic tables, with parking for five hundred cars.

Make ice cream strawberry milkshake

We asked Emily Leary, multi-award-winning food, lifestyle and parenting writer, presenter, photographer and author of A Mummy Too (www.amummytoo.co.uk) to share her fantastically yummy ice cream strawberry milkshake recipe with us.

Here’s what to do to make this simple ice cream strawberry milkshake recipe.

Makes 4 glasses

Ingredients

500g (18oz) fresh strawberries hulled (plus 4 to garnish)

300 g (½ pint) vanilla ice cream

Equipment

Weighing scales

Jug blender

Kitchen knife

Chopping board

4 tall glasses

4 straws

Instructions

Step 1

Put the ice cream in a jug blender.

Step 2

Add the strawberries.

Step 3

Whizz until it has an even pink colour and the strawberry seeds have been totally broken down.

Emily says: ‘This ice cream milkshake is simple, refreshing and delicious – and has only two ingredients! The strawberries and ice cream come together to achieve the perfect flavour, thickness, creaminess and sweetness. If you wanted, you could add extra sugar or syrup but I don’t think it needs it at all. A touch of whipped cream on top could be really fun though!’

Step 4

Pour the milkshake into four glasses. Cut a slit into the bottom of each of the 4 strawberries you’ve reserved for decoration. Attach one to the side of each glass.

Add a straw to each glass and serve immediately.
