Is your family up for the great British Walking Challenge? The national charity Living Streets is urging all of us to mark May by leaving our cars at home and walking to and from school, work and the shops. According to recent research, only one in ten commuters walks to work, and a quarter of us admit we rarely walk for as much as 20 minutes at a time. But walking is one of the most effective forms of exercise - and it’s one of the simplest and cheapest . For information see www.living streets.org.uk

Child safety week After cancer, accidents are the biggest single killer of UK children – and even children who survive serious accidents are often left with injuries that take months or years to heal. This year’s Child Safety Week, 18–24 June, aims to raise awareness of accident prevention among parents and those who work with children, highlighting the hazards often present in day to day living. For information on the activities planned visit www.childsafetyweek.org.uk

Tell us a little bit about your business. Studio 74 is a dance and theatre school in Bickley for adults and children of all ages offering everything from ante-natal classes to baby ballet to hip hop to teenage bootcamp to zumba to over 50s dance fitness! What made you set up Studio 74? I am a qualified pre-school teacher and qualified IDTA dance teacher, having studied at the Laban Centre, and I always wanted to work with children so I could combine my love of dance and theatre with kids. I wanted to do something I would enjoy doing and to make performing arts fun for children. I started to look for premises in January 2010 and it was pure luck that I came across the building the following July. It was a Ballroom and Latin school and the current owner was retiring after running it since 1974. We started the refurbishment in January 2011 and had moved in by June 2011. How does it fit in with family life? I have two children of 7 and 13. It has been hard as they were so used to having me at home but they have been involved with the business since the start. It’s long hours so my partner helps more and I have fantastic support at home. I have had to learn not to worry about the little things and have to manage my time more efficiently! Both my children come and do their classes here and it is becoming a great place for my son and his friends to get together and it keeps them away from the playstation! My daughter also helps out with the baby ballet on Saturday mornings and has decided she wants to be a ballet teacher when she grows up! What do you like most about working for yourself? Being able to juggle my time if I really need to – especially for my children. I also get to see the children who come to the school grow and develop – it is amazing to see a child that was shy when they first arrive standing up on the stage singing their heart out. I have a great team and love going to work – no day is the same and I get to be creative and meet new people every day.

What are the worse bits? The hours are really long and you never get to switch off, which can be hard. It is a big responsibility and can be very challenging. Where do you go from here? We would like to expand and I would love to see our Agency grow and see more of our kids in TV, theatre and panto! I would like to eventually open a vocational school for young performers. What advice would you give to anyone wanting to set up in business? Be prepared to work long hours. Don’t give up and if possible pick something you feel passionate about – it does become a huge part of your life and you have to give 100%. Ask family and friends for support as you will need it! My Mum is my rock – she has been a grumpy fairy, a pirate, a princess, a bunny and loves to be involved! Finally, what is your top tip for a good work/life balance? Try and share some of your responsibilities and have a good supportive team. My team at work are amazing and I am able to leave work and feel like they care as much as I do. Do take some time off and when you are with your family try to make sure you switch off from work. News & Views Count down to starting in Reception

As soon as you find out which school your child is going to this September, it’s time to start preparing. Fellow Families editor Sarah Butters shares her top 10 tips for a stress-free start Can they dress themselves? Imagine the scene. One teacher faced with 30 children and their coats. By the time each child is ready, playtime is over. If your child is able to go some way to helping, they may get some fresh air! If you can see buttons becoming a problem during the post PE change, invest in elasticated waistbands. Avoid tights in the early days as they can also lead to unnecessary bathroom accidents. With shoes, stick to Velcro fastenings which your child can do themselves. Are they used to sharing? Sharing is a vital skill if you want your child to settle in and make friends easily. Start to make a point of praising your pre-schooler for sharing their bag of figures or last few treats. Can they use the toilet on their own? Reception classrooms usually have a toilet nearby but children are expected to use it on their own. That can mean less confident children avoid a visit until it’s too late. Encourage your child to begin taking toilet trips without you to build their confidence. Are they able to eat independently? Lunchtimes can be a real flashpoint in the early days of your child’s school life. Dinner halls are noisy places and can

4

make a child feel overwhelmed. Make sure they arrive at school able to use a knife and fork. If they’re opting for a packed lunch, make sure they can open a yoghurt, put a straw in a juice box and unpeel a banana. Are they able to recognise their name? If your child can recognise their name, they’ll be able to find their peg, identify their drawer in the classroom and find their cardigan if it gets misplaced. Starting school can make even the most confident child feel a little lost. If they can locate important places, it will make them feel more in control. Can they use scissors? Teachers look for this in the early stages of Reception to evaluate dexterity, so get crafty over the next few months. Do they understand discipline? It’s important your child understands what’s expected of them when they arrive at school. They need to know hitting, kicking, biting and hair pulling will not be tolerated. Not only will it bring your child to the attention of the head teacher for all the wrong reasons, but it will make them unpopular with their classmates. Can they communicate with an adult? Giving your child the skills to communicate with their teacher means they will be able to have some control. How else will they ask to go to the toilet or let their teacher know they don’t understand the work? Encourage your child to ask and even practice with a raised hand

at home to make sure they understand the most appropriate way of getting a grown up’s attention. Are they able to count? If your child can count up to 20, and count back from 10, this will give them a really good head start. Use some of their favourite toys or foods to make counting fun. Lay out 10 grapes and get them to eat them one by one, counting as they go. It will give them confidence and help them see learning as fun. Can they follow simple instructions? The school day is full of instructions. Your child will be asked to put coats on pegs, bring packed lunches into classrooms and sit cross legged on the carpet for circle time. If a child is used to following instructions, they will avoid being reprimanded. Start giving your child simple tasks – perhaps helping with the weekly shop or with some easy jobs around the house. It will prepare them for school life.
