OUR FEVER has hit the Families Leeds office and we are in full planning mode for Le Grand Depart. We’ve put up the yellow bunting, started serving croissants at morning meetings and I’ve begun bidding my children farewell with a double kiss at the school gates. My husband and eldest daughter are big Tour fans. It’s a source of some irritation that Isobel can name most of the world’s top cyclists, but refuses to learn her times tables. However it does mean that when the peloton passes, we will have our own personal commentary team. I know there are people who question the point of a ‘big bike race’ coming to Yorkshire. I’ve had many a discussion about whether the Grandest of Grand Departs promised by the organisers is worth all the effort. For what it’s worth, we’re right behind the race. It’s not just about the excitement of one of the greatest sporting events in the world coming to the heart of Leeds, it’s about the legacy it leaves behind. It’s about getting families out on bike rides at the weekend. It’s about children choosing 2 wheels not 4 when heading out on the school run. It’s about inspiring the next generation of Bradley Wiggins who might be messing around in a cul-de-sac near you. So get out on your bike this Spring and if you need inspiration or even a little help, take a look at the ideas we have in our Tour De France special. And think on this. If Yorkshire gets a bit fitter, spends a bit more time outside and a few more families get cycling this summer, surely that’s the point of the ‘big bike race’.

RICHMOND HOUSE Victory at Rhino’s Home Pupils from Richmond House School in Headingley are celebrating after taking first place in a half time relay organised by Leeds Rhinos. The event, which was held at Headingley Carnegie Stadium saw the team of 15 pupils compete in a relay against other local schools. Along with their medals, they secured milk for a year for Richmond House School! The event, which was part of Sport Relief, was organised as part of Leeds Rugby Foundation’s aim to inspire children through sport. Congratulations!

DAD Both our columnists have caught the Tour bug this issue. Leeds Dad Mike Smith is also in training on two wheels, but Mark Cavendish need not worry.

This month Families Leeds columnist Claire Bottomley looks forward to Le Grand Depart bringing peace and harmony to her home this Summer. I can be pretty mean, you know. Even the baby has noticed. Anything that looks fun – sharp objects, teeny-tiny stones, wild animals… I am intent on denying him the pleasure of exploring them, as though my whole raison d’etre is to veto fun. Then there’s the five-year-old. All he wants to do after a busy day at school is relax in front of a computer game. But no, he is forced to contend with my obtuse demands for him to do his reading, eat his tea and make conversation. They should count themselves lucky I am imperfect. I’m someone who sees a toddler’s zeal for throwing himself off the sofa can be the lesser of two evils, who – when it suits – thinks quite a lot of screen time has its educational merits. But still, I am mean. Even Mr Bottomley gives me that look sometimes. The look that says,“Ten years ago I was cycling around the world on a big adventure, just me and the open road. I had plenty of time to think and achieve peak physical fitness. Now peak physical fitness and time to think are but a pipe dream. I’m not saying it’s your fault, but…” When we’re in the car, with Spiderman blaring from the portable DVD player behind us, and we pass a cyclist, he says wanly,“That’s what I should be doing.” So, when the biggest cycle race on earth charges through our county, setting off from this very city, how will Mr B, a one-time keen and accomplished cyclist, feel? Will there be resentment on a grand scale? Will he be tempted to hop on his bike and follow Le Tour, calling over his shoulder,“Remember to feed the fish!” Hopefully not. Actually, we’re all pretty excited. We’re going to a friend’s house. They live in a village Le Tour de France will be travelling through. I’ve come up with a plan: We’re going to cycle there. I’m not sure it will come off, but in one fell swoop I may, for once, have made everyone happy. My husband will be on a bike, my children will be enjoying an exciting adventure. And with the youngest strapped in and thus less of a liability, and the eldest looking around him at the real world, in which Yorkshire sporting history is being made, I’ll be pretty happy too.

I’m eagerly anticipating the start of Le Tour, not least because my daily commute will benefit from the resurfacing of the roads. As we live almost right beside the route, the council has already informed us that we’ll be barricaded in for the Grand Depart. Well, we can live with that as we’re getting front-row seats. Even better, our local pub is beside the route, so we’re pretty much sorted for the day. However, although we’re all looking forward to the race, we’re not generally a sporting family. Well, Dad isn’t, anyway. Of course, that’s nothing to do with never being picked for the Tenth Eleven during school PE. It just never really was my thing. Honest. Cycling is a bit of an exception to that, though. I’ve been riding to work for a while to try keeping the flab at bay, and I’ll have to admit that I’m quite enjoying it. Also, the boys have caught the bug after watching Mum and Dad wheezing their way round the Great Manchester Cycle course last year. They’ve decided that they want to take part and are busily training me for this year’s event, which takes place a week before the Grand Depart. In an unguarded moment, I let them volunteer me for doing the full four laps – 52 miles – while they’re getting away with one. I’d like to claim that the boys’ only motivation is the noble idea of raising money for charity. However, the crisps and snacks in the finishers’ packs are equally attractive, although they are looking forward to swaggering round school brandishing their medals as well. Naturally, some regular training rides have been necessary. So far, they’re going reasonably well. Perhaps too well – they now have enough confidence to use dirty tactics on the school run. Mum already has scabbed knees from being knocked off her bike by a misguided missile on two wheels. Unlike Le Tour, the Great Cycle isn’t a competitive event, but that seems to have eluded the boys. I’ve had to resort to individual training rides, as taking them out together inevitably results in a sprint trial; and woe betide the miscreant who tries to overtake the other. After defusing several rows that were pretty even on points, I’ve managed to persuade a willing friend to accompany one boy while I supervise the other. From the opposite end of the grid. I’ve wondered if I’m not imposing enough discipline on them. However, I don’t approve of the Pushy Parent thing, if only because both boys can be as stubborn as mules; trying to chivvy them just doesn’t work. If they enjoy the event, don’t get carried away, and gain a sense of achievement from doing something they genuinely want to do, then I’ll be very happy. On the other hand, I seem to have landed myself with a 65 mile stint, which is a bit further than I’ve ridden for a while. I just hope the John Wayne walk will have gone by the time the professionals arrive.

{BUSINESS} IIClare Booth is spending the morning painting two princess moneyboxes – a giftII IIfrom a local lady to her grandchildren. It’s a long way from her former life as aII IIpolice officer and Clare doesn’t mind sharing how much she’s enjoying it. AlongII IIwith her business partner Marietta-Louise Shaw, she opened Jackrabbits PotteryII IIin Oakwood in February after seeing a gap in the market.II “When I started researching, I couldn’t believe there wasn’t a pottery painting café in Leeds when there’s all this demand,” explains Clare. “We found out that people were travelling outside of the city – to Saltaire, Harrogate and York – to visit places like this. Then it was just about finding the right premises and here in Oakwood, I think we have.” The pair has turned a once unloved retail unit on Roundhay Road into a spacious shabby chic retreat for families looking to get creative. On the walls, there’s a tree with a sitting squirrel sculpted out of plaster welcoming children. But it’s the fabulous hot drinks menu and home made cakes that provide the warmest of welcomes to the many parents coming through these doors. “So many people have said it feels like a calm place. That’s exactly what we were trying to achieve,” says Marietta. “We felt it was really important to have really good drinks and particularly really good hot chocolate, as I don’t drink coffee. We don’t provide cooked food so we had to make sure the cakes were all homemade and they are! This isn’t just a place for children to paint. It’s a place for parents to relax too.” The sheer space in Jackrabbits helps to maintain that calm. There’s enough room for families to paint together before parents enjoying a relaxing coffee while toddlers play and read. For parties, there’s a dedicated area for up to 16 children set aside from the café itself. It’s by far the best party area

we’ve seen in a venue like this which is why the diary is filling up fast. As well as the décor and space, parents are being attracted by the individual attention given by Clare and Marietta so the guests get the best results. Perhaps the pair’s patience comes from the fact that they don’t have children of their own so they enjoy their time working with the young people who come in. “All children are different. Some want to get the pot painted as quickly as possible while others want their creation to be perfect,” explains Clare, who is also a portrait artist. “Younger children need distractions – colouring and games – whereas the older children take more time. Our range of animals is hugely popular with everyone – in fact the kiln looked like a zoo last weekend!” But the display of pottery on the shelves shows that Jackrabbits is not just popular with children. Beside the cupcake trinket boxes and pottery penguins are wine coolers, vases and water jugs. This is a place where adults are welcome to come and create while enjoying a great cup of coffee. However, it’s the Dads that have surprised Clare and Marietta with their creativity. “Painting pottery is a really nice weekend family activity,” says Marietta. “We’ve seen Dads start by drinking coffee and reading the paper, and end their visit choosing to paint a pot. They love to get involved.” As Clare puts the finishing touches to her morning creation, there’s a steady stream of

people coming in to collect their mini masterpieces. The coffee served here at Jackrabbits is super, but nothing tastes as good as a brew from a mug made with love and every creation leaving the café this morning has been made with lots of that. IIScarlet Fever has hit levels in children not seen for 20 years. Would you knowII IIhow to spot it and what to do if you suspect your child has it? We welcome back ourII IIresident Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital Dr Georgina Hudson to answer your questions.II What is it? Scarlet Fever is relatively rare, but we still see cases in children at our A&E departments. Parents are usually concerned that their child is unwell, when they develop a rough textured red rash. They have usually had a high temperature and complained of a sore throat 48 hours previously.

What causes it? It is an infection caused by the bacteria group A Streptococcus. It usually affects children between 5 and 12 years. The classic

symptom is the rough red rash, which feels like sandpaper. The bacteria spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

How long will it last? Parents sometimes notice that their childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tongue has a whitish coating on it and can look red and swollen. At this time the child will also have a high temperature and feel generally unwell with aches and pains. The rash will usually then appear 2 to 4 days later. It usually first appears as fine red blotches, on the neck, armpits and groin area. Gradually this bright red rash will begin to feel bumpy and then develop the characteristic sandpaper texture, as it spreads across the entire abdomen. This rash usually begins to disappear after approximately 7 days. It can be itchy and some people describe it as looking like sunburn.

Is there any tests or treatment? If you are concerned that a child has symptoms of scarlet fever they should see your GP straight away. A throat swab can be taken to confirm that the bacteria is present, but if the classic symptoms are present a 10 day course of oral antibiotics will be commenced. This can reduce the duration of symptoms, prevent spread of infection and prevent complications of the disease developing. These include rheumatic fever, skin infections, arthritis, pneumonia and kidney disease.

Can infection be prevented? Hand washing with soap and water is affective at stopping the spread of infection. It will also help not to share towels and eating utensils. At least 24 hours should be taken off school, after the antibiotic course has been commenced. For further information visit www.nhs.co.uk

||Friday afternoon. The only thing to bring silence to the|| ||group is the arrival of Rhythm Time’s mascot Rat a Tat the Rabbit. As the white fluffy|| ||bunny appears from his magic hat, silence descends and the learning begins.||

LIZABETH HAWKHEAD has been running Rhythm Time classes in Leeds for 11 years. However, you’d never guess it from the enthusiasm she brings to each and every session more than a decade on from launching. “When I pull on my Rhythm Time t shirt and stand in front of the children, the world disappears,” says Elizabeth. “It doesn’t matter what’s going on at home, what problems I’m dealing with, all that matters is the children in front of me. It doesn’t matter how many times you deliver a class, for the children, it’s got to feel fresh.” And this toddler class for children from 15 months feels just that. Elizabeth encourages the group to get out their tickle fingers, sit on their parents’ knee and head off to market. The songs are familiar so joining in is easy for parents and, before long, for the

children too. Mixed in with Ring a Ring o Roses, is a bit of Mozart to introduce the children to ‘real’ music. “Music is massively developmental,” explains Elizabeth. “The children learn counting, explore the mathematical part of their brain, explore the part of the brain that helps with co-ordination. But you’ve got to get children early. If you give them a bit of music at this age, you’re helping to develop their whole brain.” It also builds confidence. There’s a part of the class where children are encouraged to come up to a microphone, one by one, and repeat a rhythm pattern. These young toddlers are reluctant, but they give it a go and receive the applause they deserve. Repetition is also a big part of the session. The same songs are used throughout the term to give the children a sense of security. They know what to expect and from that security comes confidence. There’s also the brightly coloured props. Today’s favourite was most definitely the pom poms but there was also much enthusiasm – from the children at least – for the sound of crashing cymbals. But the biggest smiles are saved for the finale – calming music and lots of bubbles. The session draws to a gentle conclusion with the children and their parents sent on their way smiling and a little more relaxed than when they arrived. The Rise of the

COHABITING FAMILY Recent figures produced by the Office for National Statistics show that in the last ten years, the number of non-married couples living together or ‘co-habiting’ with dependent children has increased. Approximately 40% of all children are registered at birth to a single parent. We talk to Gabbie Clasper from Emsleys Solicitors about the rights and responsibilities of the co-habiting couple.

OMMON LAW MARRIAGE hasn’t existed in law since 1753, but despite this a recent public survey found that 51% of the population wrongly believed that those living together had the same rights as married couples when they separated. The current laws relating to those who live together and have children are uncertain in outcome and can involve complex legal procedures. CHILDREN & PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY It does not always follow that a dad automatically has parental responsibility for his children. If your children were born before December 2003 and you are not married to your children’s mother, you probably will not have parental responsibility for them. Parental responsibility is a bundle of rights which gives a parent the right in law to be consulted about major decisions about a child’s upbringing relating to, for example, which school your child should attend and issues relating to their medical care. If you don’t have parental responsibility you can obtain this in one of two ways: You can enter into a written agreement with your child’s mother to obtain parental responsibility, or if no agreement can be reached, you can apply to the Court for a Court Order. Many families today include step-children who may not be biologically your own. You can acquire step-parent responsibility again by way of agreement or application to the Court. In some circumstances, you may be able to adopt step-children. Adoption will extinguish any parental responsibility that a natural father has. Adoption orders are not frequently made and the children’s natural father must either consent, or the Court must agree that his consent can be dispensed with.

WILLS, INHERITANCE & GUARDIANSHIP Under the intestacy rules, if one of a cohabiting couple dies without having made a will, unlike a surviving spouse, there is no automatic right for the other person to inherit part of the deceased’s estate. The estate might include the family home where a surviving parent may wish to continue to raise their children. If that parent has no legal interest in the property despite having lived there for a period of time and/or made regular contributions, they would find themselves in a difficult legal situation at a time when stability for the children will be of paramount importance. If you wish to regulate more formally the way in which you own your house, then consider entering into a Cohabitation Agreement. Parental responsibility is also an important thing to consider in your will-making. If your partner does not already hold parental responsibility for your child, you may wish to name them as a Guardian in your will. There are a number of other associated rules concerning guardianship and parental responsibility and we recommend that you seek advice that is specific to your personal circumstances. At the moment stepchildren are not automatically able to inherit, unless they have been legally adopted by you. If you would like them to inherit it is essential that you document it in your Will. If you are in a co-habiting relationship with dependent children and have concerns about any of the above subjects, then speak to a solicitor about the various options available to you.

WHERE THE POPPIES NOW GROW By Hilary Robinson & Martin Impey Book Review by Meryl Frazer, age 8 Rawdon Littlemoor Primary School “This book is a poem and a story because some lines rhyme and some lines tell a story. Hilary Robinson has written this book so children can learn more about the First World War and she has written it this year because it’s the war’s 100th anniversary. It is about two boys who fight in the War, get injured and grow old. I noticed that in the last picture, the tree that the two boys (Ben and Ray) planted in 1909 has grown and there are thousands of poppies surrounding it. Also the boys are now old men. One of them has lost a leg because he fought in the war. The painted pictures help to tell the story and you see something new every time you look at them. Some of the pictures are gloomy and show soldiers hiding in the trenches. I enjoyed reading it and I would recommend this book to young people who are interested in the First World War. “ MY POP UP CITY ATLAS By Stephen Waterhouse Book review by Marya Aftab, age 10 Little London Community Primary School “This book is really informative because it gives you a lot of information about cities in a fun and accessible way. It is interesting to find out what people do in different cities and this book looks at historical as well as geographical contexts. My Pop up City Atlas is really good because it has quizzes on different pages which encourage you to find the answers. The pop out pictures are awesome! I really like the way the cities are categorized – religious cities, coastal cities and historic cities. You find out so much more than just visiting one country. The pages are interesting and colourful – it makes me want to read it!”

“A BOOK can be a friend… and there are lots of friends in a LIBRARY!” Yorkshire based children’s author Hilary Robinson tells Families Leeds why she thinks libraries are a vital part of family life, and shares her inspiration for her new book ‘Where the Poppies Now Grow’. WHAT’S YOUR NEW BOOK ABOUT? Where The Poppies Now Grow tells the gentle story, in rhyme, of two boys who grow up together in rural, Edwardian England. Their innocent war games become real as years later, they volunteer to fight for their country. The story is their story. It is about friendship, about courage, and about humanity. It serves to show that no matter what the difficulty or how devastating the situation, friendship and love will conquer all. WHAT SORT OF RESPONSE HAVE YOU HAD TO THE BOOK? The response has been phenomenal. I have been concerned that young children are not being actively involved in the commemorations and I can understand some of the reasoning behind that. But I hope Martin and I have proved that they can be involved, that they can be encouraged to look at the sacrifices that were

made, that while we had enemies we are in fact all one and that as the story is written in rhyme, in tribute to the war poets, and historically accurate it may foster a broader love of both subjects. I love visiting libraries and schools because I share in the passion of the professionals who dedicate so much of their valuable time to the development of young minds. I have nothing but admiration for the vital work that is being done. HOW IMPORTANT ARE LIBRARIES, AND LIBRARY STORY TIMES WHEN IT COMES TO GETTING CHILDREN TO FALL IN LOVE WITH READING? I can think of no other central resource which has such a powerful and long lasting effect on encouraging children to enjoy books. Not all children are fortunate to have parents who will encourage the experience of storytelling and reading. Libraries in conjunction with schools provide a powerful base both in terms of their expertise and their efforts. One friend, who had a difficult family life, found the library provided her with sanctuary. A book can be a friend, she once told me. And, if that is the case, then clearly there are lots of friends in a library.

Private Education… CAN YOU AFFORD IT? IIRuled out private education because of cost? Think again according to theII IIheadteacher of the Froebelian School John Tranmer. He tells Families Leeds why topII IIschools like his are making a quality education accessible to all.II “For many years, one of the problems that BMW faced was that they were perceived as being exclusively a luxury car maker with the assumption that this would be reflected in all their prices. Gradually, BMW began to dispel that myth and made the public aware that many of their models, such as the best-selling 3 Series, were no more expensive than equivalent models from manufactures such as Ford and Volkswagen. Private schools are often faced with a similar ‘price myth’ which is regularly fuelled by lazy and inaccurate journalism. Most reports about private schools are characterised by sensationalist headlines that suggest exclusivity and aloofness. Photographs of pupils from Eton or Harrow often accompany such articles and annual fees of £30,000 plus are quoted yet the reality is very different. Yes, the private sector does include some boarding schools that have rolling acres and boating lakes with corresponding fees, but the vast majority of private schools offer outstanding education and good facilities at fee rates that are highly affordable. At the Froebelian School for example, the fees (including lunch) amount to a payment of less that £600 per month. I have lost count of the number of prospective parents who have children in full-time pre-school care and tell me that they are going to be saving money once their child starts at school. Froebelian may offer outstanding value but we are not alone in providing affordable fees and many of the independent senior schools in

West Yorkshire charge fees of approximately £1,000 per month. Where most private schools differ from BMW is that many also offer means-tested financial assistance to families who would like to provide their child with independent education but are unable to afford some or all of the fees. These schemes are usually called bursaries and reflect that fact that many private schools believe their education should be accessible to the whole of society. Indeed some of the most selective senior schools, including Eton, have ambitious targets to increase the number of bursary assisted pupils with some even hoping to reach a stage whereby any child who meets their admissions criteria can join the school regardless of family income. Most private schools, including Froebelian, are unlikely to be in a position to offer all their places regardless of family circumstances but through a combination of affordable fees and some bursary assistance, we are able to offer an excellent independent education to many parents who aspire to provide their children with ‘a flying start to the citizens of tomorrow’. It is also a common myth that the best private schools are always full. In my experience, schools often have some gaps such as the two places we currently have at Froebelian in Year 3. IIHow can I help my child prepare?II

Standard Assessment Tests in Year 6 are part of the drive to collect information about pupil progress and school performance. The grades are a measure of how much progress students are making and how they compare to the national averages.

A huge debating point! Now that SATs are a part of the school calendar, many schools and parents prepare students for them. Some people suggest preparation skews the results, others think preparation is important. My personal view is that doing past papers all the time and cramming for the SAT means children can miss out when education is about so much more than tests. Give confidence a boost by treating tests as a stepping stone to the next level and giving students a context for the test. My simplest tip is to practise times tables. Having to stop to count on fingers or count through tables can really slow down whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happening and drain energy. Times tables also help with division and fractions in one go!

IIHow do the grades work?II â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Aâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is better than â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Bâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is better than â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Câ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Higher numbers are better. So a 4A is better than a 4B. And a 4C is better than a 3A. National average for Year 6 is a 4B

IIDo they matter?II A common idea is that SATs are used to plan sets at high school. Problem is, sometimes they are used and sometimes high schools donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t set until later. Also, high schools often use other measures to test student abilities and seemingly ignore the SAT result (much to the chagrin of many Primary teachers I know!)

IIMy child doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do well in testsII Your child is not the only one. Taking a sociable, play focussed creature like a child and putting them in a lonely place and adding pressure isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ideal! Tests are an inevitable part of growing up and while they arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t perfect, there is a lot to be said for them too. Reassure your child that the test is not a final comment on them as a person; donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t offer rewards for doing well in case they think they might be punished for doing badly; try not to compare, as everybody has different skills.

IIWhat if I am still concerned?II Primary teachers are some of the hardest working and most dedicated professionals I know. They take a personal level of care that is admirable. If you have concerns, please talk to your childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s class teacher. Teaching professionals are doing everything they can to make these tests as straightforward as possible.

But the party hosts have none of that and with icing on the table and knives at the ready itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to get making. After the initial tasting and some sugar shocked excitement, the group settle into transforming a simple cupcake into a beautiful princess. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a dress to make, a head to craft and a long icing plait to create. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We cater for all ages,â&#x20AC;? explains Jessica. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Generally a 10 year old is more creative and takes more time over the decoration. The younger children tend to need slightly more help.â&#x20AC;? Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot more help given by the party hosts than I was expecting. When I thought about a cupcake decorating party, I thought the group would be left to their own devices, armed with a table of silver balls, butter cream and glitter. Not so. The aim of the party is fun, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also about learning a skill. After the 6 princesses take to the cake stand, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time for the group to tackle the puppies. As tiny bits of icing were rolled, it was hard to imagine how thIngs were going to turn out but the finished product looked too good to eat. With appetites worked up, it was time for the party tea. And this is no ordinary party tea. Mama Doreen invites party guests to an afternoon tea, served on finest china and fit for the very princesses the group have fashioned out of icing. “We loved the party at Tumble Town in Guiseley for various reasons. As our son was only 2 we didn’t want a huge party nor expense. They have various options for a smaller affair and we opted for their ‘Meet and Play Party’ with maximum 10 guests, a small additional fee for the use of the party room and they provided the food and party bags. BONJOUR! That’s as far as my French goes, but here in the Stir Krazy kitchen we are excited about Yorkshire playing host to Le Grand Depart. To get you and all the cyclists ready to get on their bikes, we’ve decided to create an energy bar. Cook it. Eat it and then get cycling! You will need a 13 x 10” cake dish Ingredients: (Makes approximately 16 bars): n Rolled oats 384g n Raisins 64g n Pumpkin seeds 64g n Butter (unsalted) 64g n 1 can of sweetened condensed milk n Golden granola 128g

Preheat your oven to 180ºc and grease your cake tin.

Add the rest of the ingredients together and mix really well.

Allow to cool slightly, then remove from the tin. If you take it out too soon, the bars will collapse. Allow them a little time to set. Cut into bars, pop them in your pack up and get on your bike!

Melt the butter. You might need to get a grown ups help with this bit. You can use a pan over heat or pop it in the microwave.

Spread the mixture into your cake tin, making sure you press it down firmly. The finished bars will hold together better if you do that. Pop it into the oven and cook for 30 minutes.

Le TOUR

SPECIAL WHERE TO WATCH Unless you’ve been living in a cave, you’ll have heard that the Tour de France is coming to Yorkshire in July. If you’re one of the 2 million people who will be roadside to watch it here in the UK, you might want some advice on the best family friendly spots to catch the action. LEEDS CITY CENTRE This is where the Tour begins on the 5th July and you can expect huge crowds along the route through Leeds. The race starts from Leeds Town Hall at 11.10am and here it’s the early bird who will get the best view. As well as the race, spectators who are in place from 9am will get to see the ‘caravan’ – a fabulous procession of 180 vehicles who will be distributing Tour souvenirs to the crowds. From here it’s off up the A61 to Harewood House. HAREWOOD HOUSE Head to the Yorkshire Festival of Cycling at Harewood (4th – 6th July) and you’ll see the peloton leave for the Depart Reel or the Official Ceremonial Start of the race just after midday. The race will head up Harewood’s drive, stopping outside the historic house at 11.40am for 10 minutes before heading off to Pool in Wharfedale. This is a great place to camp or simply spend the day. There’s lots of family activities to enjoy including bike rides, go karting and balance bike fun. To book your tickets go to www.festivalofcycling.org

BOLTON ABBEY As the race heads out of Ilkley, it will pass through Addingham at about 12.30 before moving on to Skipton and Kettlewell. This makes Bolton Abbey a great base for viewing – not just on Saturday 5th July, but also on Sunday 6th July. Bolton Abbey has 7,500 parking spaces for Tour enthusiasts wanting to spend the day soaking up the festival experience, or there are full weekend camping passes. If you’re keen on viewing Stage 1, as the race heads out to the Dales, Bolton Abbey is about 2 miles from the route. As the race heads south on Sunday, you’ll be just ¼ mile from the Stage 2. BUTTERTUBS PASS This is where you’ll see the race climbers show their strength. Thousands of race fans will chose this as the perfect spot to spectate, meaning there will be a fabulous atmosphere as the riders make their way to the highest point of Stage 1. Because of the 20% gradient at some points, the riders are likely to be slower making the long wait for the peloton to arrive more rewarding.

HARROGATE Stage 1 draws to a close on the Stray in the centre of Harrogate. After 190km, the race caravan will arrive between 2.30 and 3pm, preparing the way for a straight line sprint finish and the award of the first yellow jersey of 2014. Brit Mark Cavendish is one of the favourites to take that first ‘maillot jaune’ and the Yorkshire crowd is bound to be a boost for him. Expect to see him at about 4.20pm. Expect to hear the crowds cheering him ‘home’ long before that!

OR… If you want to watch the race, but can’t face being part of the roadside crowds, why not head to Stockeld Park’s Cycling Festival. On the 5th and 6th July, you can watch the race on a giant screen while enjoying a French feast in the picnic field. Soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the Adventure Zone where you can try unicycling and the Likeabike Balance Course. Lots of two wheeled fun. www.stockeldpark.co.uk

YOUR BIKE… Skyride Leeds will take place in Leeds City Centre on Sunday 15 June. It’s a free fun event which will take over the city and offers cyclists of all ages and abilities to ride safely together on a traffic free route. It is a great day out for families, with lots to do both on and off the bike. Skyride Local offer opportunities to be part of a larger group. In the Leeds area there are 50 free led bike rides every weekend between 1st June and 31st October. The rides are graded beginning with EASY – completely traffic free with children from 5 years old able to ride their own bikes. The STEADY rides are a mix of quiet roads and traffic free paths suitable for families with children over 8. Then there’s CHALLENGING rides for older family groups with children over 11 years old. ILKLEY MOOR Children from The Grammar School at Leeds are putting a Tour twist on Yorkshire’s favourite song, ‘On Ilkley Moor b’ah tat’. With the help of French teacher Victoria Cooke, they’ve put new words to the old tune to welcome the cyclists as they pass by the school. “It's a fun way to get some of the Tour de France vocabulary learned,” explains Mrs Cooke. “Songs are one of the best ways to learn a language and we’re enjoying celebrating the Tour de France coming to Yorkshire.”
