“We wanted it to be a real ‘tell it like it is’ manual from the teenagers’ perspective,” says Louise. So whatever age your teen or pre-teen (it’s good to be prepared!) this book tells you what to expect and how to handle all sorts of behaviour to make both your life, and your teen’s life better. Teenagers Explained, a manual for parents written by teenagers, is published by White Ladder Press.
Lizzie Harrison was Head of Textiles at Tormead School, and then after having her children she went back to teach at Tormead part time. She is now launching her own art and textiles business: Draw & Stitch which she runs from her art studio in Shalford. Lizzie says “children and adults come to explore and learn through a range of exciting projects. I want to encourage creativity and develop skills – I want children and adults to come to the studio and to be inspired and have fun”. Courses consist of drawing, block and screen printing, fabric painting, appliqué, papier-mâché, free-machine embroidery, hand embroidery, beading and garment making.

Babies & Pre-Schoolers
Early Years Language
By Ruth Pimentel
Ten Top Tips for Parents
Ruth Pimentel is the Chief Executive for Toad Hall Nursery Group. Previously Ruth was the Early Years National Director and she worked closely with the Department for Education to implement the Early Years Foundation Stage. Ruth has always been committed to the development of children’s language and here she tells us about the importance of language and the work that Toad Hall are doing to ensure that children develop crucial language skills which will ensure they are effective communicators from birth and that will enable them to make good progress with their reading and writing when they start school. Being able to communicate is one of the most important skills children will acquire and has far-reaching implications for life-long confidence and well being. Here at Toad Hall we place considerable emphasis on developing children’s early language skills. As part of our training for all our staff we have implemented the Toad Hall Early Language Programme. The aims of this programme are to ensure that every child experiences a language rich environment from birth and that they have regular opportunities to develop all aspects of language; reading, writing, speaking and listening. The main purpose of the language programme is to develop high quality speakers, attentive listeners and children who understand and enjoy what they are learning. We believe that these skills lay firm foundations for high quality thinking and the development of excellent reading and writing skills. It is important that children get regular opportunities to use all aspects of language. The Early Language Programme consists of a daily planned activity that will capture children’s imagination and develop their language and thinking skills, activities such as making a photo book for the children to share and planning a house move with the dolls in the dolls house. Having command of spoken language and an ability to communicate is central to a child’s
Woking, Guildford and West Byfleet
ability to establish friendships with others and develop their self-esteem. Good early years practice has the child at the centre of all planning so focusing on crucial speaking and listening skills, as well as supporting personal, social and emotional development at this time is very important. It is important to allow the children time to talk and wait for them to start the conversation, to listen to sounds that are in the environment and to play games that encourage listening. We have introduced a wide range of fun songs and rhymes and also put in place lending libraries for parents. Parents can support this aspect of children’s language development by building songs and rhymes into everyday activities and trying to remember some of your own childhood favourites! Children need to be confident speakers and listeners to become confident readers and writers. Underpinning their knowledge of the way language is written and read is a knowledge of phonics – that crucial relationship between the letter and the sound. Before children are able to fully grasp phonics it is essential that children develop the basic elements that will help them to move forward quickly when introduced to letters and their sounds. Playing games with musical instruments, listening to environmental sounds and sounds their bodies make all help to develop their listening and discrimination skills. Incorporating lots of stories, songs and rhymes into daily activities will help the children to develop their awareness of rhythm and rhyme in speech. Once children start to show an interest in sounds and letters then you can begin to encourage them to learn their shapes through a broad range of play activities. They can paint, draw, cut and stick to understand the shape of the letters and use games so that they can build their understanding of the letters into their play activities. Just as children are getting ready to move onto school then those children who are ready can begin to

1.
Share a picture book with children and encourage them to talk about what they see, use different voices and intonation to make the experience fun for you and your child.
2.
Wait and allow the child time to start a conversation – too often adults jump in and predict what children might be about to say.
3.
Listen to sounds whilst out for a walk – listen to the sounds of birds, cars, trees and voices. This encourages children to learn to listen which is crucial when trying to pick out the sounds in words.
4.
Join in with children’s play and mirror their actions – following their lead shows that you are valuing their play and their ideas.
5.
Model taking turns in conversation by responding to their questions and then asking one back.
6.
Provide writing materials for the children, use old diaries, notebooks, forms and envelopes that come through the post as junk mail.
7.
Collect together things from around the house that begin with different letters of the alphabet
8.
Try spotting letters on signs when you are out and about – can they find the first letter of their name?
9.
Let your child help you with a shopping list and help you find items in the supermarket. Point out where the words match the list. Give your child the pen and encourage them to cross things off when you get them.
10.
Visit the local library or set up a book swap with friends.
learn how letters can come together to make simple words such as cat, pin, mat. Through our structured Toad Hall Early Language Programme we hope to provide the children with a range of high quality activities that foster their love of language, books, songs and rhymes and give them the confidence to begin to read and write. By incorporating games and fun activities into your child’s routine you can ensure that the children are set up well for their next step to school and crucially with a lifelong love of language.

What’s New?
NEW DYNAMIC TOTS CLASSES
Mummas and Beans Launches in Godalming
Recently launched Dynamic Tots classes are unique and fun half hour dance classes especially designed for boys and girls 2 – 4 years old. The classes take place in venues around Surrey.
Godalming’s first dedicated Mum/Baby Centre opens in Godalming, offering an array of antenatal and baby classes, from Daisy Birthing to Antenatal/Postnatal Pilates and Baby Massage. As well as a baby/ child friendly cafe area and treatment room offering a selection of beauty and complimentary treatments!
Dynamic Tots offer Ballet Tots and Street Tots; these classes are an introduction to the joys of dance. Ballet Tots focuses on telling a story through dance and using inspiring music, whilst Street Tots incorporates fundamental skills that will assist the Early Years learning and development criteria through energetic dance. Parents are welcome to sit in and watch their little ones take part and make new friends. Mum Amy Chan says “ My daughter enjoys every moment in her ballet tots class. The class is so creative and well designed, it is a wonderful way to introduce a child to the dancing world!” For more information on booking a place on Ballet or Street Tots classes contact Antonia on 07766077043 or Lauren: 07753 985314 or Email: info@dynamicperformingarts.co.uk.
New Zebedee’s Music Classes in Cranleigh Becky Seviour took over Zebedee’s Music earlier this year with her friend Amanda, and already she has launched several new classes and now she is introducing a new class in Cranleigh! The fun classes are tailored for individual age groups for children from 6 months-4 years and include a wide range of children’s percussion instruments, exciting props, puppets and toys. For more information or to book a trial class call Becky on 01483 272751 for classes in Cranleigh, Godalming and Wonersh or Amanda on 01483 722434 for classes in Merrow and Woking.
This is the perfect place to go if you are a mum of an under 5, the cafe area has lots of space for pushchairs, as well as toys/drawing for the older ones, and newborn high chairs and breastfeeding pillows for the younger ones! The Beauty room offers a crèche service for selected appointments, please enquire when booking. Mummas and Beans is open Monday – Saturday 10am – 4pm, information on times and prices of classes and treatments can be found at www. mummasandbeans.co.uk or contact 01483 808842.
Act One Adventures are launching new pre school adventure classes at Mummas and Beans. There are 2 types of classes, either active adventures with drama, active games and dance or crafty adventures using art and craft all based on a different story each week. Joanne McGowan founder of Act One Adventures says “When my son was this age I was looking for classes that would use up some of his endless energy but would also channel the huge imaginations this age group has. I couldn’t find anything so I have designed these classes to fill those needs but also to be a lot of fun too.” Joanne will run the sessions herself drawing on her huge background of teaching dance, drama, fitness and crafts to under 5’s and also from keeping children entertained every week at Act One Parties. www.actoneadventures.co.uk 07956 182 488.
The Music Box Launches
‘Pregnant Pause’ Classes
Swedes know breast!
The Music Works in Milford have just launched a pre school music programme called The Music Box – a fun introduction to the world of music. The focus of the classes is very much ‘fun with music’ so there is a relaxed atmosphere although the classes are quite structured. There is a full set of percussion instruments so that the group can all have the same instrument – this helps to prevent total mayhem!
The Physiotherapy Centre at Holy Cross Hospital, Haslemere, starts a new course of ‘Pregnant Pause’ warm water classes to help pregnant women exercise safely.
Innovative breast warming pads researched and developed in Sweden have recently launched in the UK. When it comes to the health and nutrition of a new born baby, the mantra has long been ‘breast is best’. Expert help is on hand to assist with positioning, latching on and a healthy diet, but even with the best made plans pain and discomfort are a frequent problem.
There is a weekly theme such as colours, counting, boats, farms etc. through which they not only teach the principles of music but also help young children learn subjects in a fun and vibrant way. To this end they use lots of props, puppets and coloured pictures. “We believe that Music Box develops listening and speech skills, coordination, confidence and social skills”, says Sarah Collett, from The Music Works. You can book a free trial online www.themusicworks.co or call 01483 516060.
Midwife Claire Barraud attended these weekly classes last year from 24 weeks’ pregnant to just before she gave birth to Eliza. She says “I suffered from Pelvic Girdle Pain which would have made exercise difficult otherwise, as I needed to exercise in the water not on land. With my other two pregnancies, I could barely walk at the end because of my pelvic problems, but with this pregnancy, I kept on exercising in the hydrotherapy pool so the pain was never as bad. The physiotherapist at Holy Cross tailored exercises to each individual, class sizes were kept small and I met other mums to be”. Classes at Tuesday 10am. 01428 647647 www.holycross.org.uk
New Swimming Classes
New Talking Tots Class in Farnham
The Swimming Academy are pleased to announce that they are starting classes in a new pool just five minutes drive from Bramley. There will be lessons for babies from 3 months, toddlers up to four years and adult group lessons and private lessons. Not only is it a lovely warm pool, but it is mineral based so there is no chlorine. It is a private venue with small classes. The Swimming Academy also offers swimming lessons for children and adults at both Boxgrove School, Guildford, and King Edward’s School, Witley. For more details please call Zelda on 01252 512981 or email Zelda@TheSwimmingAcademy.com.
Kirsty runs local Talking Tots classes - fun, interactive classes that gently boost preschool children’s communication and social skills. Kirsty says “I now have a long waiting list in Farnham, so I’m launching a new class at 12.45pm for Sprites (12 months - 2 yrs). At Sprites, you and your child explore new words and sounds together, through interactive songs, games and rhymes. Exclusive picture card activities help little ones to make sense of the relationships between words, building an early awareness of sounds and meaning. Most of all, Sprites will encourage your child’s natural love of language and communication by providing an exciting, playful introduction to the magic of words. For more details call Kirsty on 07786 279 863 or email kirsty@talkingtots.info.

The new pads utilise NASA technology and use a mother’s natural body heat to help prevent and cure problems including mastitis, engorgement, blocked ducts and nipple vasospasm. They also provide relief from hard, sore or lumpy breasts and can help with expressing and blocked ducts. They are also ideal for new mothers choosing not to breast feed and having to deal with milk reduction. Launching as Breast Aid in the UK, the pads are distributed by www.enviro-pod.co.uk.

Get composting Whether you’re a keen gardener or just want to choose the greenest, most natural way to deal with your food and garden waste, composting Involve your children too is the perfect solution. Grass cuttings, dried leaves, twigs and vegetable peelings are just some of the ingredients that can go into a compost bin or heap to make peat-free compost – ideal to use in potting or planting in your garden or allotment. Getting started is easy. All you need is a compost bin or a small space in the garden to create a heap. Then just follow our easy guide to creating your own supply of natural food for your garden. Get composting today – for a greener tomorrow.
Why compost?
Compost is a natural, nutrient-rich food product for your garden. It will help improve soil structure and maintain moisture levels, while helping to suppress plant disease. It will have everything your plants need including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and will help buffer soils that are very acidic or alkaline. Compost improves your soil’s condition and your plants and flowers will love it!
every school-aged child knows about reduce, reuse and recycle. Composting is a form of recycling you can do at home and reduces the amount of daily rubbish going into your kitchen bin.
Home-made compost is natural and peat-free, which means it’s good for the environment outside your garden too. It reduces the need to buy peat products, which have been commercially sourced and extracted from peat bogs, resulting in the release of the carbon stored in them.
Get started To find out more about
how to build yourself a compost heap, or to buy a bin, starting from only £15.00 visit www.surreywastepartnership.org.uk or call 0844 571 4444. You’ll also find lots of other helpful tips and information there too.
Recipe for success Right ingredients GReeNS Tea bags Coffee grounds Vegetable peelings Fruit scraps Salad Grass cuttings Old flowers Dead plants
BROWNS Dried leaves, twigs Toilet/kitchen roll tubes Scrunched-up or shredded paper Vacuum bag contents Wood chippings, straw Crushed egg shells Cereal/egg boxes
Wrong ingredients Cooked food Meat and bones Fish Dairy products Diseased plants Dog mess or cat litter Nappies
A step-by-step guide 1. Find the right site. Ideally site your bin or heap on bare soil. If space is limited, put your bin on concrete, tarmac or patio slabs, but make sure there’s a layer of soil or existing compost on the bottom so garden creatures can colonise. 2. Add the right ingredients. You will need a mixture of green and browns. Fill your kitchen caddy with the right ingredients such as tea bags, taking care not to compost cooked food, meat or fish. 3. Fill it up. Regularly empty your kitchen caddy and your garden waste into your bin or heap. Remember, a 50/50 mix of greens and browns is the perfect recipe for good compost. 4. Wait a while. Keep adding to your bin or heap and after 9-12 months the ingredients you have put in should have turned into a crumbly dark brown, earthy smelling material inside the bottom part of the bin or heap. 5. Collect the compost. Simply lift the bin off the compost or open the hatch at the bottom and scoop out the fresh compost. Don’t worry if your compost looks a little lumpy with twigs and bits of eggshells – this is perfectly normal. If preferred, return any material not quite ready back into your bin or heap. If you have built your own, simply rake out the ready compost. 6. Use it. Watch your garden bloom. Your compost can be used for all types of planting needs – mix with soil to replenish pots, dig in to enrich flowerbeds and vegetable patches, use as a mulch to help keep moisture in the soil or use it to feed your lawn.
