What’s on
With the Easter holidays just around the corner, the time to treat all family members to a well-deserved break has arrived. Embrace spring at these beautiful locations in the English countryside.
Situated just a 10-minute drive from the world-famous Jersey Zoo and serene beaches of the island, Longueville Manor is a perfect spot for a family spring break. Nestled at the foot of one of Jersey’s beautiful valleys, this lovingly restored Jersey manor house is a natural playground with activities ranging from nature trails to swimming and tennis. They offer a kids play area, children’s menus, and a babysitting service. You can even pre-order all daily baby requirements, such as changing mats, potties, and baby monitors, most of which are provided free of charge. Little Puppy’s fans will be over the moon.

If you fancy spending your holidays at the seaside, Bailiffscourt is your first choice. These charming houses and cottages, along with an award-winning spa set in private parkland leading to the coast at Climping, provide everything a family needs after the hustle and bustle of the city. Play ladders on the beach? Swim in a heated outdoor infinity pool? Enjoy hot chocolate? Or discover an underground tunnel? And even dare to walk through it at night... They have everything, not to mention a perfect selection of children’s snacks and a stash of fresh homemade biscuits in the room

Woolley Grange claims to be not just family-friendly, but family-focused. There is not a single reason not to believe them: with 90 minutes of complimentary childcare provided per night's stay, they truly live up to their promise. This Easter, the Ofsted-registered Four Bears Den has put together a schedule of family fun with activities for the whole family such as Easter crafts, face painting, and family cookery classes, along with the obligatory Easter egg hunt on Easter Sunday. Moreover, there's the Bath Comedy Festival just a 20-minute drive away and a forest rider cycle challenge at Westonbirt Arboretum. Multilingualism is what an international school is all about
The benefits of early exposure to bilingualism have been extensively documented. From cognitive development to cultural adaptability, including a possible way to slow down cerebral ageing, not to mention enhanced productivity and creativity.
With this in mind, basing their curricula on scientific observation, tailored pedagogy and the diversity of their multinational communities, international schools often include a broad range of languages in their educational offer.
Bilingual early years It all starts from early years with a bilingual stream, taught by native speakers in two languages who share either the day or the week for pupils to study all subjects alike in one language or the other. This approach simply recreates the natural circumstances in which a child acquires their parents’ native tongues: by imitation. After the early stages of strictly oral practice (using songs, nursery rhymes,
storytelling, poems and teacher’s explanations for all games and activities), the fluency is then extended to the written word. At this point, pupils learn to read and write in both languages. At some schools, this is done simultaneously; at others, one language precedes the other by a few months.
Modern languages at secondary level Moving on to secondary education, confidently bilingual, international school pupils have the opportunity to learn other languages. The selection can be inspired by the school’s location and the linguistic heritage of its environment (multilingual countries, border regions etc.) or by an intention to give pupils an edge in a globalised world by teaching them widely spoken
languages and sometimes more niche linguistic skills.
Multilingual school graduates
At the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle in London for instance, pupils end up bilingual in French and English, and proficient in at least one of the following: Arabic, German, Italian, Spanish or Russian; they can also combine these with Ancient Greek or Latin. This year, a
cohort of students is preparing a new qualification, called the International French Baccalaureate, with a tweak: they do so in a trilingual curriculum, which includes German.
From worldwide higher education to global careers, international schools offer pupils a future full of opportunity.
The Lycee educates pupils of over 40 nationalities, from Nursery to Baccalaureat/A-Levels.
The sites are in South Kensington, Fulham, Clapham and Ealing. In November, each school holds its own Open Day Events, where parents can experience the vibrant international education offer.

In the realm of education, bilingualism serves as a powerful catalyst for both academic enrichment and cultural understanding. In London, L’Ecole des Petits and L’Ecole de Battersea, two French-English bilingual schools, delve into the realities of bilingual education. As they challenge five common myths, they uncover the potential of bilingualism.
Myth 1: Bilingualism Delays Language Development
Reality: Contrary to popular belief, bilingualism does not hinder language development; it enriches it. Research indicates that bilingual children typically reach language milestones at a similar pace to monolingual children. Moreover, speaking two languages can bolster cognitive abilities and may even contribute to delaying the onset of cognitive decline in later life.
Myth 2: Bilingual Education Is Only for Bilingual Families
Reality: Bilingual education is not exclusive to families already fluent in multiple languages. It offers benefits to children from diverse language backgrounds, fostering language acquisition and cultural understanding. Bilingual schools provide a supportive environment for language learning, irrespective of a child's linguistic heritage.
Myth 3: Bilingual Education Confuses Children
Reality: Children possess remarkable adaptability in language learning. In bilingual
settings, children develop proficiency in navigating multiple languages, showcasing the brain's capacity for linguistic versatility. L’Ecole des Petits and L’Ecole de Battersea embody this reality through their bilingual teaching approach. Pupils are immersed in both French and English, guided by two teachers—one fluent in French and the other in English—who collaborate closely. This tailored approach, aligned with a specifically adapted calendar and curriculum, ensures that children receive a comprehensive linguistic education.
The Roche School is a leading South West London nursery and primary school where the mother tongue of its pupils and staff includes 29 different languages. The school regularly looks for opportunities where students can engage in the languages they teach – Spanish and French. Their annual Languages Week is just one demonstration of this.
The children regularly take part in various activities. To experience Hispanic culture, pupils watched a Spanish performance of Goldilocks and the Three Little Pigs, crunched on mouthwatering churros, and found out about the numerous countries where Spanish is spoken – muy interesante. To celebrate French, Year 5 transformed into chic waiters at a stylish Parisian café and served croissants to the rest of the school, while Year 6 performed two hilarious fairytales entirely in French. www.therocheschool.com
Myth 4: Bilingual Education Is Only for Academically Gifted Students
Reality: Bilingual education is inclusive and beneficial for pupils across academic spectrums. While it may offer cognitive advantages, its benefits extend beyond academic prowess. Exposure to multiple languages promotes cultural awareness, empathy, and effective communication skills, nurturing well-rounded individuals.
Myth 5: Bilingual Education Is Only for Language Learning
Reality: Bilingual education encompasses more than language acquisition. It encourages a deeper appreciation for diverse cultures and enhances cross-cultural understanding. Integrating language learning with various subjects enriches pupils’ educational experiences, preparing them for global citizenship in an interconnected world.

No matter how skilled or knowledgeable a person might be, their attitude may well be the deciding factor in their future success, both personal and professional. Recent neuroscience has discovered the crucial role a positive attitude plays in the learning process, particularly during the primary years.
The second a child is born, their brain, with roughly eighty six billion neurons or nerve cells, ‘hits the ground running’ making connections through senses and experience. Everything a young child does, feels, hears and sees creates pathways between these nerve cells, building a reference bank of experience.
In the first three years, the connections the brain makes have risen to one thousand trillion. This is an automatic process. Ninety percent of brain development is complete by the time a child is 5 years old.
Although there is a default setting for the brain to function whether we engage or not, when it comes to learning, children who are actively engaged in the learning process are going to peers who are simply ‘going through the motions’ of learning. The child who loves practising the guitar is going to progress more quickly than the child who battles with you or resents practising!
The reason for this is that as we grow, the brain takes its lead from what we do repeatedly. Where we make a conscious
Start with a clean slate. From now on, LISTEN to what your child has to say without interrupting, judging or criticising. Listen without looking for a solution. This may mean ignoring the sullen tone of voice and complaint that can come first.
Recognise that, up to puberty, children are based in feelings. Their brain is unlikely to have enough experience or references to express the negative feeling which has caused the attitude change.
Demonstrate empathy and understanding. Be available to help your child deal with the inner conflict they feel.
Be prepared to make changes: in routine, in practical ways and even in yourself, if necessary.
We are born to be positive and grow. When your child can explain and get help with the contradictions of their world experience, it’s amazing how quickly a positive attitude can be recovered.
Children who enjoy what they’re doing, who love learning and who have a positive attitude, actively engage. Active engagement creates the signal for the connections the brain makes to be ‘cemented’ in myelin, a coating of fat and protein which make them ‘automatic.’ This is how learning is assimilated and habits are created.
The brain doesn’t know whether what a child is doing is good or not, it just takes its lead from repetitious behaviour and feedback from their surroundings, in this case, parents and teachers. The more positive a child’s attitude, the more positive the connections and growth they make, which can lead to excellence in performance.

Yellowbird Education offers an array of engaging and enriching workshops designed to inspire children to embrace learning with enthusiasm. These workshops foster self-esteem, creativity, and a genuine curiosity to explore new subjects.
As an exemplary family-run business, Yellowbird Education is led by a creative duo: Janie, a former Head, and Riff, a writer. With three children enrolled in the London school system, they recognised the imperative to make learning and exam preparation within the British
education system inspiring a decade ago. Their aim was to instill a love for learning in children. Presently, Yellowbird Education proudly delivers a wide range of highly successful holiday and weekend workshops, now available at two new locations: Hurlingham School and Fulham Prep School.
Holiday workshops cater primarily to children aged 6 to 11 and focus on English-based activities. These include creative writing workshops, English exam preparation, reasoning, and interview practice for exam candidates. Additionally, arts and crafts, handwriting, and storytelling sessions are available in the afternoons, providing a full day of enjoyable activities during the holidays.
On Sunday mornings at Hurlingham School and Fulham Prep, exam preparation sessions are offered in English, Maths, and Reasoning for entry points of 7+, 8+, and 11+. Moreover, mock exams are conducted throughout the year to assist students in their preparation.

In December 2023, Ofsted inspectors graded La Retraite Roman Catholic Girls' School ‘Outstanding’ in all areas. Obtaining our third consecutive ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted judgement is a testament to the continuation of dedication, passion, and collaborative spirit of our entire school community.
The Ofsted report captures the essence of La Retraite, where our commitment to nurturing individual potential is at the forefront. Our high expectations for students are coupled with unwavering support for their aspirations and talents, fostering an environment where each student can truly thrive.
At the heart of La Retraite is a commitment to ensuring that ‘pupils feel happy and safe’ and that students grow into ‘confident, young women’. Students know there is always an adult to turn to, and this sense of community is reflected in their exemplary behaviour both in and out of lessons.
Our Sixth Form was particularly highlighted for its strong enrichment program, with students actively contributing to the local community
and taking on leadership roles. This reflects our commitment to not only academic excellence but also the holistic development of our students - ‘pupils are well prepared for life in modern Britain’.
Our ambitious curriculum ensures that all pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, have access to highquality education. The introduction of T levels in the Sixth Form has further enriched our offerings and raised aspirations among our students.
I want to express my gratitude to our dedicated teaching staff, who are experts in their subjects and play a pivotal role in building students' confidence and knowledge. The report commends their efforts in creating a positive and diverse learning environment.
All three of my children have benefited from Yellowbird over the last five years across the entire range of courses. While each course is different and the teachers may vary, the quality of the tuition, the level of engagement and the enthusiasm never changes. I don’t know how they do it, but somehow they manage to make Handwriting courses and Writing courses fun! My kids happily went to the holiday courses and came away with new skills and greater confidence. I highly recommend Yellowbird to any family looking for extra tuition for their child as they go into their exams.
La Retraite is not just a place of learning; it's a community that celebrates excellence. This ‘Outstanding’ grade is a collective achievement, and I want to thank each member of our community for their contribution.
Let us continue on this journey of educational excellence, shaping the future for our students and ensuring La Retraite remains a beacon of inspiration for years to come.

Those with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) have normal hearing but constantly mishear what is said. Whilst APD is neurological in nature and may be inherited or stem from developmental problems, research shows that early childhood ear infections can be a significant contributory factor.
Children develop critical language skills between the ages of 6 months and 3 years, when the brain learns to map out and store sounds for language processing. When a child starts reacting to words with a smile or starts speaking their first words, they are

Children with APD have also been observed to:

children in the UK. Part of normal development in young children, it becomes more concerning if it doesn’t pass over time. If your child is refusing school due to anxiety, the longer this continues, the harder it becomes for them to return.
Missing school not only means your child loses out on education but also other essential skills, such as mixing with their peers and becoming more independent from their parents. School attendance is, in fact, mandatory: under UK law parents are responsible for ensuring their child attends school. However, in 2022, more than sixteen thousand parents were fined for unauthorised school absences.
A variety of factors can be behind a reluctance to attend school. Young children often experience separation anxiety or may be anxious by temperament. Some children may experience intimidated or inferior. Others may find the work challenging and or illness may keep them away from school. Commonly it is a combination of some or all of these things that creates anxiety and may lead to the arrival of the ‘school wobblies.’
How to identify ‘school wobblies’
The feelings your child may experience are real and this anxiety can lead to physical symptoms such as sweating, headaches, feeling sick or an increased heart rate which can make them
Here are some tips for helping your child build a positive mindset and instilling the habit of going to school.
Open communication: actively listen, try to be calm, patient and show empathy.
Establish a positive routine: consistent morning and bedtime routines provide structure and reassurance.
Positive reinforcement: celebrate achievements, no matter how small, to boost your child’s confidence. Show interest in their learning, progress and friends, always talking positively about school.
Build strong connections with your child’s teachers and peers. Work closely with your child’s school to address areas of struggle, with additional support provided, if necessary.
Promote independence: involve your child in decision making to empower them and give them a sense of control.
Seek professional help. If school reluctance persists or appears rooted in deeper issues, seek help from the school’s SENCO initially.
feel dizzy. Children may be reluctant to get up and ready in the morning. They may be angry and upset or acting out at home or they may withdraw and seem quiet and low, often fixating on small issues. These are all automatic and mostly normal reactions.
However, it’s important to bear in mind that for every missed school day, it becomes harder for your child to go back. For for an anxious child, this can make things much worse. So try not to give in and keep continuity.
School reluctance requires a nuanced and empathetic approach. By understanding the root causes, fostering open communications and implementing positive strategies, parents and educators can work together to create an environment in which children feel supported, confident and eager to embrace
Lisa and Catherine are co-founders of Emparenting (www.emparenting.co.uk), supporting children, parents and families with the insights, skills and tools needed to nurture the development and well-being of the next generation.
Once you understand the root of your child’s anxiety, work with their school to create a personalised plan of support and schedule regular progress meetings. This plan may include:
Taking your child in earlier to school to meet with a known key adult or friend to ensure a calm start to the day.
Providing a visual timetable to give a clear structure to the day, including support when moving between lessons. Where possible, ensure your child is informed about changes.
A safe space to retreat to and opportunities for brain breaks.
Activities and clubs at breaktimes to provide structure. A specific responsibility can help them feel involved.
An in-school Social Skills Intervention Group to embed positive friendship habits.
Practising mindfulness and relaxation techniques to help calm an anxious mind.

Martha Collison's hot cross bun recipe is close to the classic version featuring dried fruits and spices. Try alternative versions by replacing the sultanas (and tea) with dark chocolate chips or finely chopped Werther’s Original Butter Candies. The buns are created to tear and share, but use the larger tin size mentioned in the recipe for conventional separate ones.
Makes 12 Prepare 30 mins Cook 20 mins
50g mixed peel
150g sultanas
50ml Earl Grey tea, strong and hot
50g unsalted butter
200ml whole milk, plus extra if needed
1 British Blacktail Free Range Medium Egg
600g strong white bread flour, plus extra for shaping
80g caster sugar
10g salt
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp mixed spice
10g fast action yeast
1 orange, scrubbed, zest
Vegetable oil, for greasing
30g plain flour
2 tbsp clear honey
1. Put the mixed peel and sultanas into a small bowl, then pour over the tea and leave to soak for 15 minutes. Melt the butter in a pan, then remove from the heat and add the milk and 125ml warm water. Beat in the egg, then set aside.
2. Put the flour into the bowl of a stand mixer. Add the sugar, salt, cinnamon and mixed spice. Mix together, then add the yeast and orange zest. Drain the sultanas and mixed peel (discard the liquid) and add to the bowl. Using the dough hook on medium speed, slowly pour the milk mixture in and knead for 4-5 minutes, or until a smooth, elastic dough forms. You may not need all the liquid, or you might need a splash more milk to clean any floury patches in the bowl. The dough will be sticky, but don’t be tempted to add extra flour at this stage.
3. When the dough feels soft and silky, place it in a lightly oiled, covered bowl and leave to rise in a warm place (near the boiler, next to the oven or in an airing cupboard) for 1-2 hours, or until almost doubled in size. Line a baking tray with baking parchment – the maximum size of the tray should be 30x23cm, but something slightly smaller is preferable so they join together as they bake.
4. Tip the risen dough onto a lightly floured work surface and fold it over itself to knock out any large pockets of air. Divide the dough into 12 even pieces and, using a cupped hand, roll into balls. Evenly space the dough on the prepared baking tray, setting them about 2cm apart. Cover loosely and leave for 1 hour, or until the buns are larger. Just before baking, preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark
5. For the crosses, mix the 30g plain flour with 2-2½ tbsp water to make a loose paste. Transfer the paste to a piping bag, then pipe a cross shape over each bun and bake for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown all over. Use a pastry brush to paint the honey over the tops while the buns are still hot. Serve warm or cold they’re delicious toasted too.
After the baby months of feeding, getting to grips with naps and developing a routine and then finally moving onto solids, you’d think that the first year would be the hardest when it comes to sleep right!?
Wrong! Toddlers are notorious for their sleep challenges and whilst you may have had a baby who napped well and slept through the night, it is not unusual for this all to change in their second year and beyond – welcome to toddlerhood!
Sleep for toddlers is complex. It’s not just about making sure they are well fed and awake for long enough during the day but also whether they’ve had enough of your attention to not crave it at night as well. Cue multiple visits to your bedroom once they can get out of their bed!
For many toddlers, imagination kicks in from around the age of two. This can bring genuine fears of the dark, monsters or anything else their little brain has convinced them is scary. This need your support during the night to settle down again.
Reading comforting books together, favourite teddies or dolls and limiting TV exposure can be really useful, as can keeping a warm red or orange night light on for them.
Another key stage in a toddler’s development arrives as they start to realise that they do, in fact, possess the language and control to be able to delay going to bed. ‘One more story, two more songs, I want milk, I need a wee’ have been commonly heard by many a toddler parent!
Whilst this is a phase and happens to the vast majority of parents, it is important to consider sticking to your boundaries during this period so that bedtime doesn’t start to become a two hour process. We speak to many parents who feel that they have lost control and that their toddler now dictates everything about their bedtime routine.
And then of course, there is the idea that maybe they just want to be close to you.
Sleeping in the same bed is considered normal in many cultures. The number of parents who are happy with this arrangement in the UK varies hugely. Whilst some are very pro co-sleeping, others prefer separate beds and the prospect of a better night’s sleep without being kicked by little limbs. When it comes to night time sleeping arrangements, it is the best approach for your family that counts.
The common theme around sleep for both for babies and toddlers is consistency and some parents struggle with this. Whether you help your toddler fall asleep or ask them to settle to sleep on their own, it is the consistency of whatever approach you take that helps sleep along.
confusing for a toddler and this can lead to multiple night wakes and confusion. Your best bet? Choose one approach to sleep and stick with it. Then the whole family will get a better night’s sleep.

A recent survey of 3,000 UK parents revealed that 37% use gaming consoles to keep their children, some as young as 6 years old, entertained and quiet at home. This highlights the importance of examining the less-discussed aspects of gaming, particularly its impact on the younger generation.
In the digital age, video games have become a ubiquitous part of our cultural landscape, serving not only as a source of entertainment but also as a platform for social interaction and learning.
As a former addict who has now become a leader in addiction research and the founder of Rehubs, Nicholas Conn aims to dissect the nuanced relationship between children and video gaming. He reveals the hidden dangers that lie beneath the surface:
The Allure of the Virtual World Video games offer an escape, a chance to inhabit a world where the rules differ, challenges are surmountable, and rewards are immediate. For children, this realm is not merely an escape but a canvas for their imagination. However, if left unchecked, this allure can lead to disconnection from reality. The virtual world, with its high stimulation and interactive nature, can become more appealing than the real world, leading to a preference for the digital realm over physical activities and real-life social interactions.
As an expert in addiction recovery, Nicholas Conn has witnessed firsthand the addictive nature of video games. The structure of many games, with their levels, rewards, and achievements, taps into the brain's reward system. This can create a compulsion loop, compelling players to continuously engage with the game. For children, whose self-regulation skills are still developing, this risk is amplified. The inability to disconnect can lead to behavioural changes, sleep disturbances, and a decline in academic performance.
While video games can offer a platform for social interaction, they are a double-edged sword. Cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content, and online predation are real risks in the online gaming community. The anonymity and distance the digital world offers can lead to behaviours and interactions that might be unacceptable in the real world. For children, who are still learning to navigate social contexts, these negative experiences can have profound impacts on their development and well-being.
The sedentary nature of gaming is a growing concern. Long hours spent in front of screens can contribute to a sedentary lifestyle, leading to obesity, vision problems, and other physical health issues. The immediate gratification that video games offer can also lead to impulsive behaviour patterns, affecting a child's ability to engage in delayed gratification—a key skill for personal development.
Nicholas Conn, an addiction expert, concludes that while video games are a valuable part of modern culture, it's essential to approach them with awareness and caution, especially concerning children. Balancing screen time with physical activities, fostering real-life social interactions, and monitoring content are crucial steps to ensure that the digital world remains a positive force in a child's life.
Rites for Girls is an organisation that offers group mentoring for girls through their adolescence aiming to make growing up an easier, safer and better supported journey. Mentoring takes place in Girls Journeying Together groups and helps girls in Years 6 and 7 (10 – 12 years old) as they transition into puberty and senior school, to be empowered and grow in confidence and inner strength. Meeting monthly for a year, up to 12 girls in each group are supported to take charge of their emotional, social and physical well-being. They learn about puberty changes, friendships, social media influences, menstruation, body image, self-esteem and a range of personal skills to sustain them. Importantly, each girl is encouraged and welcomed to be herself. Fully funded places available.
Girls Journeying Together Facilitator, Sophie Beaupain in Wimbledon says; “Lots of girls are struggling and since the pandemic these girls’ groups are more needed. Girls feel so much pressure, and sadly many are not coping. There is pressure to do well at school, to look good, to have the right friends, to be happy, to go to the right places, to be kind, to be fearless, to be digitally connected, to fit in and the list goes on.
Girls Journeying Together groups support girls to take charge of their own well-being and develop a greater sense of themselves so they stand stronger.”
What the girls say:
“I was nervous about growing up but now I’m not.”
“It’s brilliant, we talk about things, really talk, so you realise that others feel the same way.”
“I liked being able to ask questions about things on my mind.”
For groups starting soon, contact: Sophie Beaupain, Wimbledon sophie@ritesforgirls.co.uk or Nicki Brown, Balham/Tooting nicki@ritesforgirls.co.uk Visit www.ritesforgirls.com for more information. Rites for Girls is a member of the BACP.
Girls’ Net
Rites for Girls also offer a shorter, online programme called Girls’ Net for girls who are 8-18 years old. This 6-week course offers guidance and camaraderie through times of challenge.
