Welcome to our October issue, packed with spooky inspiration and fun for the half term! Whether you’re planning a visit to one of the Top 10 Spooky Castles (p. 4-5) or seeking family-friendly Halloween & Fireworks Events (p. 16-17), we’ve got plenty of ideas to make this autumn memorable. For those looking to keep the little ones busy, check out our guide to October Half Term Activities (p. 18-22).
In this issue, we also explore important educational themes. Discover the benefits of peer learning in Why is My Child Teaching Another Child? (p. 11) or reflect on the role of critical thinking in education (p. 13).
We understand the concerns many parents have regarding the proposed VAT on private schools and the potential impact on overcrowded state schools. These are challenging times, and we sympathise with families navigating these issues. We hope this issue provides both insight and inspiration for a fulfilling October!
Warm wishes, Eleni Kiourtzieva, Editor

SPOOKY CASTLES AND MANSIONS
Halloween is just around the corner, making it the perfect time to plan a magical family day out. With this guide in hand, a hauntingly good time is guaranteed.
Hampton Court, Surrey
It’s the spookiest time of the year at Hampton Court, Henry VIII's notoriously haunted palace. This October half-term, the palace is transformed by magical spells. As you tiptoe through the dark winding corridors and courtyards, you’ll feel the chilling presence of our infamous ghosts lurking around every corner. Ghost hunters will be on hand to help you seek out all of the palace's spirits. After all that exploring, cosy up to hear some spooky stories and unwind with a Halloween-themed treat from the café.
Hampton Court Palace, East Molesey, Surrey, KT8 9AU. www.hrp.org.uk/hampton-courtpalace.
Chawton House, Hampshire
Every autumn, this historic house with Jane Austen connections opens its Gothic Season, and this year is no different. Bring little ones dressed as witches and warlocks to fly around Chawton House’s autumnal gardens this October half-term. If you are courageous enough to visit Chawton House after dark, take a guided tour to uncover the secrets of the house, its portraits, and the books within. Don’t miss one of their gothic suppers, followed by ghost stories by the fire in the Great Hall.
Hatchlands Park was built in the 1750s for naval hero Admiral Edward Boscawe. Since then, it has housed wealthy families, a finishing school for girls, and even a printing press. The mansion is now a family home, and this Halloween they invite you to enjoy a pumpkin hunt in the garden for the little ones and spooky activities on their parkland trail. They’ve even got some broomsticks to help you on your way! And from 27-31 Oct, 12-4pm, don't forget to pop into the house for some spine-chilling surprises too.
Tower of London, London
London’s iconic castle and World Heritage Site, the Tower of London is a first choice for all spooky stories fans. As you walk in the footsteps of the infamous ghosts at the Tower of London, installations and surprises await. Pick up a trail map on arrival and keep track of the ghosts you spot on your visit. Designed to spook, not terrify, immerse yourself in the eerie atmosphere and create an unforgettable Halloween experience for the whole family. Tower of London, London, EC3N 4AB. www.hrp.org.uk/tower-of-london.
Farleigh Hungerford Castle, Somerset
Set in the beautiful valley of the river Frome, just nine miles from Bath, the remains of Farleigh Hungerford Castle offer plenty for visitors to enjoy – making it a perfect day out for families, couples, and walkers enjoying the surrounding countryside. Hear the intriguing, yet sometimes gruesome stories of the Hungerford family who occupied this fortified mansion for 300 years. If you're brave enough to enter the crypt, you'll find a burial vault which holds the best collection of human-shaped lead coffins in Britain.
This historic house literally rose from the ashes after a catastrophic fire in 1960. Discover the mark each owner left over the centuries, from Tudor beginnings to it’s neo-Georgian styling. Don’t forget to pick up “Eye-spy” booklets for children, so they can search for treasures, images and objects within their collection. The best time for your Halloween visit is from 19 Oct to 4 November, when you’ll find gourd-geous pumpkin displays throughout the gardens and can follow the Potions trail with Wilma the Witch.
Hinton Ampner, near Alresford, Hampshire, SO24 0LA. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/hampshire/hinton-ampner.
The Vyne, Hampshire
Once an important Tudor palace, this atmospheric mansion has some illustrious connections, from Henry VIII to Jane Austen. This autumn, explore the ground floor of the house and locate ten vibrant suncatchers featuring all kinds of mysterious and magical pumpkins. Inspired by the jack-o'-lantern, the gardens offer fun activities such as pumpkin patch bean bag and ring toss, as well as noughts & crosses. On 5 October, don’t miss a Halloween movie under the stars with Disney classic Hocus Pocus Spooktacular. Fancy dress encouraged.
The Vyne, Vyne Road, Sherborne St John, Basingstoke, Hampshire, RG24 9HL. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/hampshire/the-vyne.
Old Sarum, Wiltshire
Gather your little monsters for a ghoulishly good day out at this medieval castle this half- term. In keeping with Old Sarum’s centuries-old history, storytellers from the past will be on hand to enthrall and scare visitors with sinister stories. Little adventurers will be bewitched by the Halloween Quest, which will challenge them to solve clues as they explore. Running from 26 October to 3 November, 10 am – 4 pm. Old Sarum, Castle Rd, Salisbury, SP1 3SD. www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/oldsarum.
Ham House and Garden, Richmond, Surrey
Surrounded by gardens, Ham House is one of the grandest Stuart houses in England. This autumn, hit a potion-themed outdoor trail in the gardens surrounding this 17th-century historic manor. Seasonal spotter and autumn leaves colouring-in sheets will also be available. Don’t forget to visit the Orangery Café for delicious warming treats and lunches.
Ham House and Garden, Ham St, Ham, Richmond TW10 7RS. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/london/ham-house-and-garden.
Hever Castle, Kent/Surrey/Sussex border
Treat your little ones to a spine-tingling visit to Hever Castle, once the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, King Henry VIII’s second wife. Explore the castle grounds filled with spooky pumpkins and put your detective skills to the test with a Halloween-themed word puzzle. Don’t be too startled if you come face to face with some of Halloween’s most infamous characters. You might even encounter Dr. Frankenstein himself!
Most schools are welcoming prospective parents this term so now’s the time to start researching your shortlists. Many independent schools offer scholarships and discretionary bursaries which contribute towards the fees, making them well worth considering in the search for your child’s next school. When visiting the school, it’s advisable to prebook, as many events require prior registration. Check the school’s website for more details and to register your interest. According to the editor of Families SW, “the best way to determine if a school is right for your child is by attending an open day or tour.”
Be sure to mention that you heard about the school through Families SW when you visit. The listings feature mostly independent schools; however some state schools are also included.

Why is My Child Teaching Another Child?
By Annabel Gray
Just before the pandemic struck, I was in a café when I accidentally (promise!) overheard a conversation between two mums. One of them was expressing her outrage that, at school, her child had been teaching another child to read.
“It’s just lazy teaching” I heard her say. “What about his own learning needs? How is he being challenged and stretched?” Her companion sounded equally frustrated and perturbed.
Obviously I didn’t know the child or school in question, so I can’t comment on what the teacher’s motivations were in this particular instance. Maybe he/she did just fancy a break! But what I would like to share, is little-known teaching secret: evidence based research indicates that peer tutoring is one of the most effective ways of helping all pupils progress.
Peer tutoring enhances the learning of not only the ‘tutored’ but also that of the ‘tutor’ and encourages collaboration – another researchbased winner.
The ‘student’ benefits from one-to-one attention from someone who he/she is likely to feel more relaxed working closely with than an adult teacher. The child who is tutoring consolidates their knowledge and develops key ‘mastery’ skills in the process. Anyone who has tried to teach a child to read/multiply/explain a preposition knows how challenging it is!
When I use peer tutoring to teach a new concept, 99% of pupils ‘get it’ by the end of the week. I can’t boast such great statistics when teaching alone.
What’s also great about peer tutoring is that any child can be a tutor and any child can be a tutored. It helps avoid class ‘ability tables’ and promotes fluid differentiation in the classroom. Work with this person. Are you struggling? Okay – ask this person.
And guess what? Kids LOVE it!
So parents, if you hear that your child was teaching another child, take it as a compliment and be glad that the teacher is using tools that evidence-based research shows are effective. You could even implement it in your home too – siblings can support each other – or maybe ask your child to teach you!
Self-Assessment
Another technique used in the classroom is selfassessment. It’s really important that children become confident assessing their own ability and evaluating how they are doing in different subjects. That way they understand what they are confident about and where they may need to ask for extra help and support. You can introduce this concept at home by asking your child to rate each piece of work they do. If you are home-schooling, next time your child is on a Zoom lesson, tell them beforehand that afterwards you’re going to ask them to assess their work. For example, they might give it a mark out of ten or a smiley/average or sad face. This will also help you as a parent to understand what level your child is at and what they might need to do next. Self-assessment also helps teach your child the correlation between effort and achievement. It may be that their understanding of a topic is good but that the work they’ve done is only average or poor due to lack of motivation.
Siblings as Teachers
As well as peers in the classroom, siblings can also be encouraged to teach younger brothers or sisters, especially if you are home-schooling. Why not ask an older child to plan, resource and teach a lesson about a subject they know well to their younger sibling? The younger child will benefit from the 1:1 time and the older child will enjoy being in charge for a while.
Teaching a younger sibling really helps older children to experiment with putting into words concepts that they may have understood but have not had to articulate. The added bonus is that you get a break!
Give your older child a whiteboard to teach on and ask them create some games or worksheets to help their brother or sister. They will also need to hone their patience and engagement skills; we all know teaching is a challenging job!
Obviously you need to stay aware of how things are going – the last thing you want is for the session to turn into an argument!

Why Thinking Should be a Curriculum Subject
By Dr Neel Burton
‘Fake news’ is nothing new, but in our Internet age, it has spread like a disease, swinging elections, fomenting social unrest, undermining institutions, and diverting political capital away from health, education, and good government. So how best to guard against it?
As a medical specialist, I have spent well over twenty years in formal education. With the possible exception of my one-year degree in philosophy, the emphasis of my education has been firmly and squarely on fact accumulation.
Today, I have little use for most of these facts, and though I am only middle-aged, many are already out of date, or highly questionable. But what I do rely on—every day, all the time—is my faculty for critical thinking. As BF Skinner once put it: “Education is what survives when what has been learnt has been forgotten.”
But can critical thinking be taught? The answer is ‘yes’ - or, at least, the beginnings of it. So why not make more time for it and be more rigorous and systematic about its learning?
Logic is a good start, but there is much more to critical thinking than mere logic. Educationalists often amalgamate thinking with logic. True, logic is able to provide immediate certainty and the authority and credibility that goes with that. But logic is a lot more limited than many people imagine.
Following his defeat at the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE, Marc Antony heard a rumour that Cleopatra had committed suicide and, in consequence, stabbed himself in the abdomen—only to discover that Cleopatra herself had been responsible for spreading the rumour. He later died in her arms.
Logic essentially consists of a set of operations for deriving a statement from other statements. In a sense, it merely makes explicit that which was previously implicit. It brings nothing new to the table. The conclusion flows from the premises as their inevitable consequence:
1. All birds have feathers. (Premise 1) 2. Woodpeckers are birds. (Premise 2) 3. Therefore, woodpeckers have feathers. (Conclusion)
What’s more, logic is not concerned with the actual truth or falsity of the premises or, indeed, the merit or relevance of the conclusion.
Reasoning, in contrast, is a much broader psychological activity which also involves selecting and assessing evidence, creating and testing hypotheses, weighing competing arguments, evaluating means and ends, developing and applying mental shortcuts, and so on. All this requires the use of judgement, which is why reason, unlike logic, cannot be delegated to a computer, and also why it so often fails to persuade.
Just as there is more to reason than logic, so there is more to thinking than reasoning. If school curricula make very little time for logic and reasoning, they make even less time for non-rational forms of cognition such as the emotions, intuition, and imagination.
To see the significance of non-rational forms of cognition, let’s hone in on the emotions. With the decline of religion and traditional social structures, our emotions have come to assume an increasingly dominant role in our lives. It has forever been said that we are ruled by our emotions, but this today is truer than ever. Much more than reason or tradition, it is our emotions that determine our choice of profession, partner, and politics, and our relation to money, sex, and religion.
Yet, remarkably, the emotions are utterly neglected by our system of education, leading to millions of mis-lived lives. Nothing can make us feel more alive, or more human, than our emotions, or hurt us more. To control our emotions is to control ourselves, and to control ourselves is to control our destiny.
Our school curriculum needs to make more time and space for thinking. And we need to rehabilitate alternative forms of cognition, such as the emotions, intuition, and imagination, that can support, supplement, or supplant reason and return us to wholeness.

What does a good state secondary school look like?
By Melanie Sanderson
Choosing a secondary school is one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make for your child. Very likely, your two priorities are whether your child will reach their academic potential and whether they will be happy there. Here are my tips on what to look for.
Hot-house or greenhouse?
Is the school educationally aspirational and how does this manifest? Look for relaxed and respectful teacher-pupil relations. They are key to successful learning. Is the library well-stocked and busy? Teacher recruitment and retention is challenging all schools. Ask pupils how often they have cover teachers.
Are pupils regularly assessed? Performance measures such as Progress 8 (see www.gov.uk) are good indicators of how a school adds value as they measure academic attainment rates over time. Are there programmes to stretch the more academic children? What about those with special educational needs and disabilities?
Breadth of curriculum
The best state schools offer and value a broad liberal arts education beyond the standard curriculum. For instance, Bohunt School in Hampshire ‘blew the socks off’ the Good Schools Guide with immersion classes in Mandarin. Some of the best state schools invest in top notch sports facilities and coaching, others have outstanding creative or performing arts spaces. Pick a school that suits your child’s strengths. Check out school notice boards and the school’s social media for co-curricular activities and trips the children are doing outside the classroom too.
For over a hundred years, the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle, situated in the centre of South Kensington, has been a beacon of French culture and values in the UK’s capital. In recent years, it has developed into a truly diverse and multi-national place of learning with more than 40 nationalities represented in the student body.
Pastoral
Good schools have clear systems. Every child is known; nobody slips through the net. Ask if reports and open evenings include pastoral updates. Does the school’s praise/discipline system flex to meet individual needs and align with your family values? Ask pupils what they do at break and lunch. Good schools include spaces for children to seek quiet reflection when needed.
Communication
Good schools also communicate well with parents. The tone of school newsletters and social media feeds can tell you a lot, while an active PTA is a sign of an engaged parent community. If you can, pass by the school at home time and observe pupil behaviour as they leave the site. Another top tip is to talk with pupils higher up the school. Would you be happy for your children to turn out like them?
Melanie Sanderson is Managing Editor of The Good Schools Guide (www.goodschoolsguide.co.uk), which contains frank, impartial reviews of schools. Its writers visit thousands of schools annually, speaking to Heads, teachers, pupils and parents.
Where Cultures Converge: The Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle
Children aged 3 to 18 benefit from highly trained and motivated staff and the most up to date educational methods, providing all students with the education they deserve and maintaining the school’s reputation for educational excellence.
The school is managed by the Agency for French Teaching Abroad (AEFE), with its curriculum accredited by the French National Ministry of Education and overseen by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The education students receive is exactly the same as that in France, making it easier for those who
come from or may return to France to continue their studies seamlessly.
At the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle each child is valued for who they are and what they can become. Every year, many students go on to Oxbridge, the Grandes Écoles, and other centres of excellence around the globe. Notable alumni have played, and continue to play, an influential role in the public life of both France and the UK in politics, business, and the arts.
It is not just French children who benefit from attending the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle. Students from over 40 different nationalities are
enrolled because they and their parents seek the best educational experience in both French and English.
For 70 years, the Lycée has also provided students with the opportunity to enrol in the British Section, and study a traditional academic programme of GCSEs and A-Levels, which are delivered in English, as per an English school.
The Lycée Francais Charles de Gaulle school is a unique and special place of learning where tradition and innovation meet, and where excellence thrives.

Cultivating Social and Emo A Family's Guide to Nurturing
In the early years of childhood, the building blocks of social and emotional skills are laid, shaping the way children interact with the world around them. As parents and caregivers, we play a crucial role in supporting our children's development by fostering positive relationships, effective communication, and emotional well-being. By embracing intentional strategies and nurturing a supportive environment at home, we can empower our children to navigate social interactions with confidence, express and regulate their emotions, and build strong connections with others. Let's explore practical tips and activities to strengthen social and emotional skills as a family, creating a harmonious and emotionally intelligent environment for our children to thrive.
Family Emotion Check-Ins: Start each day or end each night with a family emotion check-in. Encourage each family member to share how they are feeling, whether it's happy, sad, excited, or worried. This practice helps children develop emotional awareness and teaches them that it's okay to express their emotions in a safe and supportive space.
Cooperative Games and Activities: Plan regular family game nights or outdoor activities that require cooperation and teamwork. Games like charades, building puzzles together, or working on a family art project can promote communication, problem-solving, and bonding among family members.
Family Mindfulness Practice: Introduce mindfulness practices to your family routine, such as guided breathing exercises, mindful eating, or nature walks. Encourage children to focus on the present moment, practice self-awareness, and regulate their emotions. Family mindfulness sessions can promote relaxation, reduce stress, and strengthen emotional resilience.
“Plan regular family game nights or outdoor activities that require cooperation and teamwork”
Gratitude and Appreciation Rituals: Create opportunities for family members to express gratitude and appreciation towards each other. Whether it's sharing three things you are grateful for during dinner or writing thank-you notes to family members, cultivating a culture of gratitude fosters positive emotions, strengthens relationships, and promotes a sense of connection and well-being.
Modeling Emotion Regulation: As parents and caregivers, model healthy ways of managing emotions and coping with stress. Demonstrate self-regulation techniques, such as deep breathing, taking breaks, or engaging in physical activity when feeling overwhelmed. By showing children how to navigate their emotions effectively, you teach them valuable skills that they can apply in their own lives.
Empathy Building Stories: Incorporate storytelling into your family time by reading books or watching movies that highlight themes of empathy, kindness, and understanding. Discuss the characters' emotions, perspectives, and actions, and encourage children to reflect on how they would respond in similar situations. These stories can help children develop empathy and compassion towards others.
Problem-Solving Family Meetings: Hold regular family meetings to address challenges, resolve conflicts, and make decisions together. Encourage open communication, active listening, and collaborative problem-solving strategies. Involving children in decision-making processes empowers them to voice their opinions, contribute ideas, and develop critical thinking skills.
By incorporating these strategies and activities into your family routine, you create a nurturing and supportive environment that fosters the development of social and emotional skills in your children. Through intentional and heartfelt interactions, you empower your children to build strong connections, communicate effectively, and understand and regulate their emotions, preparing them for success in relationships, academics, and life.
tional Skills in Early Years: Connections
In conclusion...
Strengthening social and emotional skills within the family unit is a powerful way to support children's holistic development and build a foundation for lifelong well-being. By prioritizing positive relationships, effective communication, and emotional intelligence in your family dynamics, you create a harmonious and emotionally resilient environment where children can thrive and flourish.
Together, let's embrace the journey of nurturing heartfelt connections and empowering our children to navigate life's challenges with grace, empathy, and resilience.
I hope these practical tips and activities inspire you to strengthen social and emotional skills within your family and create a nurturing environment where your children can thrive.
If you have any specific requests or need further assistance, feel free to reach out. Wishing you and your family a journey filled with love, connection, and emotional growth!

200g linguine
450g pack Waitrose Pork Sausage meat
Stuffing with Pepper & Nutmeg
2 tbsp olive oil
200g frozen diced onions
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 tsp fennel seeds
1 medium courgette, trimmed and coarsely grated
350g tub Waitrose Cherry Tomato & Basil Sauce
2 x packs sweet peppers
1. Preheat the oven to 220°C, gas mark 7 and line a baking tray with parchment paper. Cook the linguine according to pack instructions. Drain and set aside.
2. Warm a large nonstick frying pan over a high heat and fry the sausage meat for 10 minutes, breaking it up with a spatula or spoon as it cooks. When browned, remove and set aside. Without cleaning the pan, add the olive oil, onions, garlic, fennel seeds and courgette, then turn down the heat.
3. Cook, with the lid on, for 5 minutes, or until the onions have softened. Add the tomato sauce then return the sausage meat to the pan. Simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes over a medium heat to reduce the sauce a little, ensuring the sausage meat is cooked through with no pink meat remaining.
4. Meanwhile, cut the tops from the peppers, discard the seeds and keep the tops. Using a small knife, carve a face on each pepper. Place on the prepared oven tray. Mix the pasta with the ragù and use to stuff the peppers. You may have a little filling leftover to serve on the side.
5. Replace the pepper lids and roast for 25 minutes, or until piping hot and cooked through (turn the temperature down slightly if they brown too quickly). Tease out some of the pasta with a fork before serving to make them look more dramatic.
