I look forward eagerly to the summer and spending the holidays with my children. But as it gets nearer, a little panic creeps in. Six weeks with three small people to entertain (and trying to fit in work around the edges) is somewhat daunting. For us, organisation is the best approach – ensuring we plan in a balance of organised activities, get togethers with friends and some holiday clubs or grandparent babysitting days. I hope our directory of some of the best clubs and camps will help you as much as it has us!

To advertise: If you are reading this, so are your customers! We can help you reach an audience of over 47,000 parents in Reading, Henley, Newbury, Wokingham, Bracknell and West Berkshire. Give us a call on 07968 711937 or drop us a line at editor@familiestvw.co.uk to find out how we can help support your family friendly business!

Over the coming months, we will be exploring a different town or city in our patch and some of the family attractions that they have to offer. This time, it’s the turn of Wokingham which, four years ago, earned the coveted accolade of being the best place in England to raise a family. So what are the leisure offerings that make this particular gem stand out?

Next issue: September/October – Back to School! Education focused news, information and features. Plus, half term holiday fun, fireworks and Halloween. Booking deadline: 23 July.

Also look out for our what’s on guide packed with summer days out, and our features about parenting for your child’s mental health, and getting ready for starting school. Talking of which, have a sizzling summer and we’ll see you again for our ‘back to school’ education special in September.

Rachel.

Regatta makes big splash

WIN tickets for Highclere Castle Battle Proms The quintessentially British ‘party in the park’ is back and promises even more spectacular music and entertainment than ever before. Highclere Castle Battle Proms will be held on 3 August on the lawns overlooking ‘the real Downton Abbey’. A two-hour programme of captivating classical music from a 60-piece orchestra will open with a breath-taking musical Spitfire display, plus toe-tapping vintage vocals, Napoleonic cavalry display, and live fire from over 200 cannons. The Red Devils – the British Army and Parachute Regiment’s official display team – will be ‘dropping in’, as they perform their daring freefall display in the skies above the concert. The event will culminate in musical firework displays, and a flag waving, sing-a-long spectacular including all the Last Night of the Proms finale favourites such as Jerusalem, Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory. Families Thames Valley West is delighted to be able to offer three pairs of tickets for three lucky readers. To enter, simply like our Facebook page (@familiesthamesvalleywest) and tag three friends who might also be interested. Competition closes at midnight on Sunday 28 July. Review: Four Seasons Hampshire If you think five-star should be avoided at all costs with children, think again. We enjoyed a night at the Four Seasons Hampshire and discovered an impressive but super family-friendly hotel that has thought of everything.

O

ur previous experience of staying in hotels as a family has been a little ‘mixed’. Hungry children waiting impatiently for a late tea. The panic when you realise you’ve forgotten something vital to their happiness (and therefore your own). Sharing a room with three children in assorted camp beds who are too excited to sleep. When they finally give in at 10pm, being confined to the hotel bathroom with nothing more than a hot chocolate sachet for entertainment. As soon as we swept up the driveway towards the Four Seasons Hampshire (passing an equestrian centre and children’s playground), we knew the experience would be quite different. The whole family was welcomed warmly and shown to our beautiful adjoining

rooms complete with blissfully comfortable beds. As for forgetting the essentials, it would be a challenge to think of anything missing. The spa offered complimentary swim nappies and arm bands. The restaurant bathroom had a fully stocked nappy changing station. Our girls thought they had struck gold when they discovered children’s toiletries, dressing gowns and slippers in our marble bathroom. Tea was available at a time that suits young diners, with a small buffet table to avoid any grumbling while they await their main course. But the thing we – big kids and small – were most excited about was the spa. A luxurious experience for adults with an Olympic-sized pool, steam rooms, relaxation rooms and an impressive list of treatments. But let’s not kid

ourselves we were there for the hot stone massages or adults-only vitality pool. For us, it was all about the new Sharkie’s Reef – a funpacked family adventure pool, complete with 4m slide, a rotating umbrella fountain and bubble jets. When the children finally allowed us to dry off, we discovered a wealth of other activities amongst the 500 acres of stunning parkland. The hotel’s mascots, Shetland ponies Milo and Dougal, were grazing outside the equestrian centre. There is also a high and low ropes course, cycling, clay pigeon shooting, falconry and fishing on the lake. We barely scratched the surface in our 24-hour stay (although we do know Sharkie intimately). A creche is available during the school holidays, babysitting can be arranged, and there is a games room for teens. It is certainly not a cheap break, but we felt the price was justified by the quality of the environment, the entertainment and the most attentive service imaginable. It would be the ideal venue for a special family celebration. In many hotels, we have found that children are tolerated – at the Four Seasons Hampshire, they were truly welcomed. We cannot wait to return! Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire: Dogmersfield Park, Chalky Lane, Dogmersfield, Hook, Hampshire, England RG27 8TD 01252 853000; fourseasons.com/hampshire).

Shichida Method™ - revolutionary brain training hits the UK Mr Ko Shichida, President & CEO Shichida Japan, with a Shichida UK student and his family

I

t started in Japan over 60 years ago, quickly spread to 300 locations across Asia – and has now hit the UK. The Shichida Method™ of ‘brain-training’ is fast becoming the way to develop creative and intelligent young minds. The aim is to nurture wellbalanced children who can use their whole brains efficiently. Vandana Prasad and Shraddha Tekurkar are the Executive Directors of Shichida UK, which has its headquarters in Reading. They advocate ‘bringing out the genius in every child’ through the unique activities and exercises practised under the Shichida Method™. Their weekly classes are already such a sell-out success they are now looking to recruit more trainers, and roll out the programme across the country. Vandana and Shraddha who completed their Shichida Trainer Certificate in Japan, explain the key reasons for starting early: “Our youngest class is for six-month olds. At that age, babies have a huge thirst for knowledge and an incredible ability to retain information. By the age of six, our brains are already 80 per cent formed. Mainstream education is focused on the left brain – the rational and the logical centre. It neglects the other side of the brain which is linked to colour, shape, imagination, empathy, memory and language acquisition. The Shichida Method™ is about stimulating the whole brain and sparking the neural connections between both sides.” They recently celebrated their first anniversary with an event attended by parents, the Mayor and Mayoress of Reading and the family of the Japanese founder, Professor Makoto Shichida. In an exclusive interview with Families magazine, son of the founder, Mr Ko Shichida President & CEO Shichida Japan, said: “The Shichida Method™ is

familiesonline.co.uk

about making children selflearners, and equipping them with the skills to excel in all areas of education. The ages between 0 and 2 are the most important in the brain development. At that point, the right side of children’s brains are dominant, so capturing that window and drawing out the hidden abilities they possess is incredibly powerful. It gives them the potential to be great musicians, mathematicians, athletes – whatever they choose.” Mrs. Mayumi Shichida, Vice President Shichida Japan, added: “The human brain is such that whatever skills we do not use in infancy are lost. We are born with remarkable abilities that are often overlooked. The key is to make it fun – if children are not having fun, it is not working. The education system gives children a lot of knowledge. Shichida provides the skills so you can process that knowledge yourself, and make all the necessary connections.” The success stories are remarkable. For example, children under two who attend regularly have a large vocabulary, can complete simple addition, recognise numbers up to 50 and count in fives and tens. Classes run weekly and are divided into age groups from babies to preschoolers. Numbers are kept small at four to six children per hourlong class, and parents are encouraged to be involved and continue the work at home. The founders claim that the combination of activities, pitched at exactly the right level, lead to photographic memory skills, computer-like calculation capability, multi-language acquisition ability and more. Activities range from work with numbers and letters, to music and story time, and from critical thinking and memory games to image play.

Shichida’s reputation means that parents like Michael and Lachin Harvey make three-hour round trips to attend. Their son, Miles, has been attending classes for almost a year starting just a few days after he turned one. Michael said: “I began to research the Shichida Method™ shortly after Miles was born. It is totally unique, and I became convinced that it would give him the best start in life. I’m a firm believer in the power of imagination and classes have definitely developed his ability to play on his own, and his fascination with everything he comes across. His language acquisition is good for his age – especially considering

Email: editor@familiestvw.co.uk • Tel: 07968 711937

he is already tri-lingual – and he is very musical. We spend 30 minutes every day with him at home working on the exercises that we have been given in classes. We really value that parent / child bonding. When he starts school, we feel confident that he will be ready and will reap the benefits from the foundations that are being laid now.”

Are you school ready? Rachel Manley, Headteacher at Yattendon Church of England Primary School in West Berkshire, offers her advice to parents preparing children for starting primary school this September.

I

f the wait to hear about your primary school place wasn’t bad enough, your energies will now be focusing on preparing your child to start ‘BIG’ school. The move to primary school is an exciting and key milestone in your child’s journey. It is important to tell yourself that this is a very

natural next step, and a continuation towards the final stage of Early Years development (0-60 months) – which began when your child was born! If your child attends a pre-school, staff will already be preparing him/her for the change through stories and talk.

If this is your first child, you may be feeling particularly out of your comfort zone. Rest assured that schools do this every year and are very experienced in helping children to adjust and settle into their new setting, whatever their needs may be. Hopefully you will have already been to visit the school as part of your decision making. If not, schools are generally very open to visits all through the school year. You will find that schools have a clear programme of transition to support the change, opportunities for parents to ask questions and to become familiar with the setting. At Yattendon Church of England Primary School, we hold ‘stay and play’ sessions where parents join their child, a ‘taster’ morning in school without parents and parents’ information sessions. Our staff visit your child in their current pre-school and some schools offer home visits. Once the new school year begins, schools will offer further parent workshops, for example, on phonics and how you can support reading at home. Other opportunities to come into school are offered. Our parents enjoy joining us for ‘Forest Friday’ and

some come in to hear children read or to help us cook. This journey is very much about working with you and your child. Many schools also use an on-line assessment system – we use Tapestry – which you can access and contribute to. If this system has been used in your child’s pre-school, it will simply be continued at primary school. It takes every child a different amount of time to settle – for some it is an easy adjustment, for others it can take the first term. Generally, your child will be settled, comfortable with routines and coming into school independently by October half term. My final piece of advice would be to try to hide your own anxieties from your child. Tissues are available for both children and parents on the first day! You are simply placing them into the care of trusted professionals who are passionate about their development and well-being. Everyone will benefit if we can do this together and we will support you through the joys and challenges of your child’s development.

To prepare your child over the next few months, you could: • Talk positively about starting school • Read and share books with your child • Notice print – letters and numbers in the environment • Share nursery and number rhymes • Count with your child • Help them to recognise their own name • Label all of their clothes

Top tips! A vital area that will really help your child to manage practically is self-care:

• Being able to dress and undress themselves • Use the toilet independently • Wash hands independently • Blow own nose • Use a knife and fork (all infant children are currently able to access a hot school dinner for free so they use cutlery every day) • Peel an orange/banana or open a packet I know it is easier and quicker to do it for them, but you will help them to manage better if they are encouraged to be more independent. Spend time packing and unpacking their bag with your child. Buy uniform and practise putting it on and changing for PE. Choose shoes they can put on by themselves.

As a town that four years ago earned the coveted accolade of being the best place in England to raise a family, Wokingham has a lot to live up to when it comes to entertainment. Our quick review of its current leisure offerings shows that the family standard is by no means slipping. Wokingham still has much to offer, not least during the long six-week summer break when parent energy and imagination otherwise starts to flag. The town won the ‘best for families’ recognition in the 2015 Family Hotspot Report which recognised high quality family amenities alongside good salaries, low crime rates, and solid GCSE performance. So, when you explore at ground level, what are the attractions that make this particular gem in the Families Thames Valley West territory stand out?

Monkey Mates There is plenty of lively fun to be had at the Monkey Mates soft play centre at Old Forest Road, Emmbrook, which has both indoor and outdoor attractions plus a café and party service. Prices vary between peak and off-peak admission times.

MAD Academy

Wokingham Libraries At the peaceful end of the fun spectrum, Wokingham’s libraries have much to offer families over the summer – and indeed right through the year. The eight libraries within the borough offer regular events, such as free Rhymetime sessions for babies, Little Explorers Storytime sessions for under sevens and Lego club for children aged 5-10 years. Wokingham is also actively participating in the Berkshire Summer Reading Challenge, Space Chase, which runs over the summer holidays from 13 July and celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.

MAD Academy Wokingham provides music and movement classes for babies and preschool children in a free-spirited and comfortable environment. The approach to learning through music is based on the Early Years Learning Framework and is styled as ‘funky, energetic and bouncing with fun’. Says owner Amanda Chivers: “Music is an essential part of every child's development, boosting their confidence and developing skills. We use lots of props and MAD Academy songs as well as traditional nursery rhymes and songs. I also love running children’s parties and can theme them specifically for the birthday child.” You can enjoy a trial class for free when you mention Families Thames Valley West. For class times and venues, email amanda.chivers@madacademy.com or check out the MAD Academy Facebook page - @madacademy.wokingham madacademy.com

Space-themed events at Wokingham Libraries include space stories and rocket poems, craft activities including creating a UFO from recyclable items, a Fred in the Shed magic show, and MAD science sessions. Places must be booked in advance. wokingham.gov.uk/libraries

My Journey One worthwhile family challenge this summer might be to make your travel more sustainable through the imaginative ‘My Journey Wokingham’ travel campaign. The proposition is simple: reduced car travel saves money, reduces congestion and improves both air quality and overall health. The campaign runs a range of projects including cycle training and maintenance, led walks and creates maps and personalised travel planning. Events through the summer include ‘Bikeability’ Learn to Ride courses for children and adults at Floreat Montague Park Primary School, Wokingham. Come along to the Bike Bonanza at Finchampstead Community fun day on 7 August. During term time, there’s a ‘Balance Bike Club’ and Learn to Ride sessions as well as Adult Cycle Training levels 1 and 2. Meanwhile, those with balance or mobility issues will enjoy the recumbent tricycles on offer at the ‘Woky Wheels 4 All’ Session at Finchampstead. There is also SHINE: outdoor cycling for the over 60s. Facebook and Twitter: @MJWokingham myjourneywokingham.com/events

The Dance Zone

diddi dance Reading & Wokingham

scores for fun Dinton Pastures

diddi dance runs action-packed, specialist preschool classes for boys and girls at Wokingham Community Centre, as well as at various locations across Reading. Classes are structured yet relaxed and develop confidence, co-ordination, gross motor skills, rhythm and social skills. Fully accredited by the Children’s Activities Association, the sessions are set to original, age-appropriate music and lessons are aligned to the EYFS. “diddi dance is the highlight of our week!” says Lily’s mum. “It’s so lovely to have a real giggle with my little girl and learn some new moves together. The teacher knows just how to keep the children engaged and the class never fails to lift the spirits!”

With a network of classes running in and around Wokingham, the Dance Zone is hugely popular with its members. The classes only run in term time, so now is the time to plan for involvement in the autumn. You pay by the class, with children having the option to take part in medal tests. There is also the opportunity to progress to teachers training with professional qualifications. The range of dance styles on offer are: Freestyle, Street, Ballroom and Latin American, for children from the age of three. Ballroom and Latin American classes are also available for adults. Children can become part of the Official Dance Crew with the chance to perform at local events, which so far this year have included Wokingham May Fayre and Winnersh Summer Fete. thedancezone.co.uk

Peach Place

Boat hire runs right through until September and is open 11am to 5pm seven days a week throughout the school holidays. There is a wide range of sailing courses for all ages with particular emphasis on teens who want to progress through the various stages and achieve Royal Yachting Association levels of proficiency. There are also special school holidays sailing events, a static climbing wall and mobile climbing tower. dinton-pastures.co.uk

Holme Grange Craft Village Holme Grange Craft Village in Heathlands Road bills itself as a ’hidden gem in the heart of the countryside’, offering a unique shopping experience. With independent traders and artisan crafters working in a collection of converted barns, visitors can browse in a relaxed environment. Offering a wide range of products, as well as numerous workshops and classes, there is also a coffee house in an historic barn opening onto an enclosed courtyard. Activities on offer include a variety of crafts and Lego building.

For those who are happy to stay in town, Wokingham’s fast regenerating Peach Place development will offer increasing family opportunities through the rest of the summer and beyond. The project is pulling itself clear of its main construction company failing earlier this year, and is now fulfilling its substantial potential with a view to creating a continentalstyle pedestrian quarter in the heart of Wokingham. At its centre will, in time, be a square with cafes and bars as well as independent shops and some high street favourites, which are due to open over the coming few months. New businesses on the site already include the town’s first vinyl record store and a beauty salon.

Parenting for your Children’s Mental Health By Philippa Perry

There is no way to guarantee perfect mental health for your children. But there’s a lot you can do, and be, to help.

F

irstly, parents need to show warmth, acceptance and understanding. They need to be available physically and emotionally. They must be able to love, trust, respect and they need to know how to soothe, play and be generous with their attention and time. We have these qualities already: the trouble is, other things can get in the way. Things like childcare, money, school, work, tiredness, lack of time and busy-ness ... But what gets in the way more than any of this is what was given to us when we were babies and children. If we don’t look at how we were brought up and the effect it has had on us, it can come back to bite us. Think back to your childhood: were you ever made to feel ‘bad,’ in the wrong, or even responsible for your parents’ bad moods? If this happened to you, it is all too easy to try to repair your feeling of being wrong by making someone else feel wrong. The victims of this can be our children. So, we also need to be humble, flexible and admit to our kids when we’ve slipped up. We want them to know how and when to apologise, and not to hold on to being right when they have been mistaken. The only way to really teach our children this, is to show it. Another quality we need is optimism. Optimism that our children will pick up all the skills we model that everyone needs to get along: flexibility, problem-solving skills, tolerance for frustration and empathy. We all do better when someone we respect believes in us.

Good relationships with our children depend so much on being a good listener and observer. So often we only see and hear what we want to. Or sometimes we think we’ve heard but immediately interpret what they’ve said as an attack. For example, your child might say to you: “We never go out” when just last week you’ve taken them to a theme park. You might want to explode with: “How can you say that, we went to Legoland last week?” This would probably lead to an argument. If instead you listened to the feelings under those words and said: “You sound bored and fed up. What would you like to do?” and then they’d say something like: “I want to go back to Legoland again.” You could then have a moment of connection and say: “Yeah that was fun”. When we really listen to our children, we will hear that for a lot of the time, they don’t want us to fix them, they want us to understand them. They want to be felt with, not dealt with. If our children can feel heard, understood and seen, and especially if parents can help them put their feelings into words, they will be able to confide in you rather than hide from you. More than anything what our children need from us is our loving attention; to be taken seriously and understood. Being seen is a good defence against being driven crazy. More than anything we need to remember that children are not projects - something we get right or ruin, or chores to get through, but people to relate to.

Philippa Perry is the author of The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read (and Your Children Will Be Glad That You Did), published by Penguin Life.

The inside track Be Relaxed offers classes in Reading for families, school and nurseries that nurture positive wellbeing, and build self-esteem, awareness and confidence. Owner, Lorna Crossan, says: “I strongly believe in nourishing our children from the 'inside out' and affirming and setting a positive example for our natural state of 'being' (calm, caring and content). First and foremost how we are 'being' affects those around us, our thoughts, feelings, words. We need to cherish our children for being themselves. Leading by example, we can teach them ways to keep in their natural state of ‘being’ through, for example, self-acceptance and self-care. This can be underpinned through activities like Be Relaxed classes and by prioritising the 3 As in your child's upbringing – Affirmation, Attention and Affection.” berelaxed.co.uk ................................................................................ The Emotional Health Academy offers specific services directly to parents in and around West Berkshire to support their child or young person with their emotional needs. The EHA offers emotional health assessments and delivers evidenced-based, low-intensity talking therapies. Their advice is as follows: We often discuss the importance of children’s resilience with parents which is increasingly important considering the pressures of today’s society (education, peers, social media etc). Our instinct is to wrap our children up in cotton wall and fight all their battles, but we need to provide and allow opportunities for them to problem solve and learn that they can actually cope. This will strengthen their own confidence when the same or similar problem occurs. Some examples on how we can strengthen resilience: • Model & normalise – openly show that we as adults also find things difficult but cope with them, e.g. I was really nervous about a meeting today but I actually presented well and it went much better than I thought. • Emotional language – give them the tools to be able to communicate what they are experiencing. • Play to their strengths – this provides opportunities to promote their self-esteem. westberks.gov.uk/eha or call 01635 519018

Getting your teeth into the plastics issue By Families TVW features writer, Barrie Hedges

Like a lot of Mums, Daniela Gardiner was keen to ensure that her family made its own small mark on the issue of single-use plastics.

W

hat she didn’t quite expect was to translate that determination into a business that is now selling 100% biodegradable bamboo toothbrushes as a substitute for plastic ones. The idea germinated from a wider employee initiative run at the Bracknell offices of electronics giant Panasonic, where Daniela works in the legal department. “I am part of a group that has been looking at ways of reducing plastic use, and we have already introduced individual drinks bottles on our desks to avoid continually buying single-use plastic ones,” she says. “But then we were asked to make three individual pledges on our personal plastic use for 2019, and I was struggling to come up with ideas. “I did some research over Christmas and discovered bamboo toothbrushes, but they weren’t widely available in the UK, and the range wasn’t very big. I found a Swedish Company - The Humble Co., which designs them in Sweden

and Germany, and they were happy to supply me.” With a website quickly launched at fairytoothbrush.com, Daniela’s Toothbrush Fairy Company was launched within weeks and now offers a range running from individual toothbrushes through to family packs and toothbrush subscriptions (taking the hassle and worry out of remembering to replace your toothbrush). Wider offerings include natural toothpaste, tooth picks, dental floss and tropical fruit chewing gum. The products are also all Vegan certified. You can even buy letters from the Toothbrush Fairy designed to be personalised and left under your children’s pillows when they lose their teeth. The messages remind youngsters about good oral hygiene, looking after their teeth and the importance of caring for the planet.

markets,” says Daniela. “At the moment, it’s mainly single toothbrushes but I hope people will come to recognise the sense of buying family packs.” With 3.6 billion toothbrushes being consumed across the world every year, Daniela believes the bamboo option makes great good sense. But it also helps to deliver an important message to children in

particular about the future of the planet at a time when experts are predicting there will be more plastic in the sea than fish by 2050. Says Daniela: “I am trying to encourage my two daughters to think about the environment and I was much encouraged when my eldest was the only child in her year who volunteered to become an eco warrior at school.”

A former wedding coordinator and events planner, Jodie says: “As a Mum of two myself, I found that there was a gap in the market for classes that were fun and educational for babies and toddlers, but also welcoming and friendly for grown-ups.” Moo Music was born and quickly expanded to cover Wickham, Thatcham, Kintbury and Kingsclere, with sessions for newborn to walking, and walking to five years. Jodie adds: “One of my proudest moments so far was winning the Little Ankle Biters award for Best Children's Activity Class. I am also passionate about raising money and awareness for good causes and, with the support of my amazing Moo Mums and Dads, we have raised around £500 for Children with Cancer UK and Send a Cow.” Jodie also offers birthday party packages, and runs special sessions

StageAbility Berkshire has been successfully building confidence in children through drama for over ten years. Until now, these popular classes have always run after school in Reading, Wokingham, Earley, Tilehurst, Mortimer and Burghfield Common, but Jackie Stuart, Principal of StageAbility told us: “An increasing number of people have approached me to ask about weekend classes. When both parents are working, which is often the case now, a class time of 5pm can be a problem for many families. We don’t want these children to miss out on our StageAbility magic, so we are very excited to announce that we are opening our first Saturday morning drama class from September at The Willink School, Burghfield Common.” If you would like to register your interest, you can sign up for a free trial

Over 250 children from the local area joined an estimated 120,000 other youngsters across the country to raise awareness and money to provide support for autistic children through the charity, Caudwell Children. Owner of diddi dance Reading & Wokingham, Andrea Bickford, said: “We’re very proud to have been a part of Children’s Activities Week - all of our little students have had lots of fun practising for our special ‘Watch Me Fly’ dance and are very excited at the prospect of dressing up to perform their funky new moves!”

The summer holidays are a great time for children to reboot and relax, but it’s also been reported they can lose 25% of what they’ve learned during the long break. Claire Winter looks at how to keep their learning alive with ten brain-stimulating activities to do this summer.

Make Reading Fun The annual Summer Reading Challenge, which inspires kids across the UK to read six books and collect rewards for doing so, is an excellent place to start. Sign up at your local library. To find out more, check out summerreadingchallenge.org.uk. When your child reads, they exercise their brain, they use their imagination and they gain valuable knowledge about the world they live in. Learn to Play a Musical Instrument Playing a musical instrument helps engage the brain, and the summer is a perfect time to learn something new as your child can practice daily without the distraction of a busy schedule. Learning a musical instrument can also help with learning languages. Try a New Sport Learning a new sport not only strengthens the body but also the brain. Families has a great guide to summer camps and activities on pages 10-11 and locally you’ll find plenty of opportunities for your child to try a plethora of new sports like rock climbing, canoeing, Karate, abseiling and street dance. Sport also teaches essential life skills like self-confidence, teamwork and strategic thinking. Keep a Summer Journal Encourage your child to document the summer with pictures and writing, perhaps choosing a theme. If they like computers, you could get them to create a digital journal with written entries, video diaries, and photos. Write Stories and Post Cards Documenting the summer on Instagram with pictures and captions is one way to get a child

10 Brain-Stimulating Activities to Keep Learning Alive this Summer who loves social media platforms involved. If all else fails, encourage them to engage in the old-fashioned way and write stories with an actual pen and paper! Getting younger children to write and send postcards when you are on holiday will boost their writing skills.

Learn to Code Coding is fascinating and great for kids who love their tech. There are some brilliant, free websites which teach your kids the basics of coding, such as Scratch and Alice, where children can learn to programme, tell stories and animate! Try Puzzles Number puzzles and Sudoku are great for improving the grey matter. Older children may enjoy a fun day at an escape room where they have to solve clues to get out.

Cooking with Mrs Bun the Baker.

Have a Board Game Tournament Tactical board games like Chess and Backgammon give the brain a workout. Scrabble helps with vocabulary and Monopoly boosts Maths and money management skills. Games like Trivial Pursuit are great for learning general knowledge. Not only are board games fun, but they also teach valuable lessons like being strategic, following instructions, learning how to lose, and communicating with other players.

Learn to Cook Bake Off and Master Chef fans will love this challenge. Get your child to search for some fun recipes to make for the family. They could design a menu for the day, a picnic or an evening meal. Let them be in charge of buying the ingredients too. Weighing, measuring and following instructions all keep the brain active. Mrs Bun the Baker runs award-winning cookery classes in South Oxfordshire. She says: “Children love making tea for the family and it gives them confidence. They love to play with food, taste testing as they go! They are learning Maths, English and Science, but in a fun and playful way. Sitting down, sharing the meal and chatting about the day will make your child proud.” Get Gardening Research some insect and butterfly-friendly plants and flowers to plant in the garden or try and grow some fruit or veg from seed. It’s a great introduction to science, and you could also tie it in with a visit to a Botanical garden, Arboretum or National Trust property to sample the variety of plants and trees they have on offer.

The inside track Kate and Clare run the Master Builders Club, which offers holiday workshops, birthday parties, after school clubs and school events. They say: “LEGO® is also an incredible brain-stimulating tool for the holidays, and is ideal for developing children’s cognitive and fine motor skills. Along with sparking excitement, promoting creative play and encouraging problem solving, the product encourages a natural love of discovery and investigation. “At Master Builders Club, we regularly observe how the toy ignites children’s curiosity and provides a calming play experience in a busy world that is now focussed on technology and computer games. Whilst building with LEGO®, children are able to lose themselves as their creation comes to life through careful planning, exploring ideas and the final completion of a model. The handson play experience provided by LEGO® has no boundaries and children of all ages and abilities can access this ‘all encompassing’ toy.” For more details, visit masterbuildersclub.co.uk or email info@masterbuildersclub.co.uk
