Early Years

How Early Learning Can Predict a Child’s Success By Dr Robert Titzer

Y

ou may be surprised to learn that the long term effects of children learning language and maths skills at an early age is one of the greatest predictors of their financial success as adults. How can this be possible you may ask? With the many confounding variables such as a child’s IQ, formal education and socio-demographic background, it’s hard to believe that early reading or maths skills can be one of the most important factors associated with doing well as an adult. However, a 2013 study from the University of Edinburgh1 shows that early maths and reading abilities have major long-term benefits. Children who performed better in reading and maths tests at age 7 were shown to be more likely to earn higher wages later in life according to researchers. Children who had advanced by just one grade level in reading by age 7 earned an average of £5,000 per year more at age 42 than their classmates. The study also concluded that “mathematical and reading ability at age 7 are substantially and positively correlated with

financial success at age 42, independently of relevant confounding variables.” In other words, it was the actual reading and maths abilities at age 7 – not just the child’s socioeconomic status, the child’s IQ, or other factors – that had a lasting impact on the person’s life chances. Understanding Words Research consistently indicates that the earlier a child learns language skills, the better the long term outcome. A well-known study in 19952 found that the number of words spoken to a child by age 3 was a better predictor of a child’s vocabulary at age 11 than the parents’ IQs, parents’ socioeconomic status, or which school the child attended. A more recent study on the topic found that babies who learned more words by 18 months of age had greater vocabularies at age 3. In addition, the researchers found that 18-monthold babies who knew more words had faster brain processing speed. The study also concluded that the “language gap” that exists by 18 months of age would be hard to overcome, meaning that babies who had been taught fewer words in the first 18 months of life could have later delays in learning language skills3. Early Reading and Maths Skills Reading problems at an early age are hard to counter-act later on in life. Very few children who cannot read at the appropriate level at the end of first grade ever catch up.

Extra Dr Robert Titzer is an Infant Researcher and expert speaker at The Baby Show returning to London ExCeL 2nd – 4th March 2018 (www.thebabyshow.co.uk). 1 Ritchie, S. J. & Bates, T. C., (2013). Enduring Links From Childhood Mathematics and Reading Achievement to Adult Socioeconomic Status. Psychological Science. 2 Hart, B. & Risley, T., (1995). Meaningful Differences in Everyday Parenting and Intellectual Development in Young American Children. Baltimore: Brookes. 3 Fernald, A., Marchman, V. A. & Weisleder, A., (2012). SES differences in language processing skill and vocabulary are evident at 18 months. Developmental Science.

There are also significant advantages in learning to read early. Studies back in the 1960s concluded that children who were taught to read at ages 3 or 4 read better than children of the same IQ who were taught at ages 5 or 6. Those with the same IQs who were taught at ages 7 or 8 were even farther behind. Six years later, the children who were taught to read earlier were still ahead of the same-IQ children who were taught later. In addition, the earlier the child was taught to read, the more likely the child enjoyed reading. Parental involvement in teaching children about reading and writing words is also related to the development of early literacy skills. In turn, early literacy skills directly predict word reading at the end of first grade (age 6-7 years) and indirectly predict reading in third grade (age 8-9 years). Word reading at the end of first grade predicts reading comprehension in third grade. So, if you are wondering how to give your infant a head start in life, it’s worth investigating the resources available to help you teach little ones language and maths skills as early as possible. Kids Come First Separated Parent Support Workshops Helping Families Cope with Separation and Divorce

D

Separated Parents Support Workshops • Dealing with divorce? • Struggling with separation? • Worried about children? Book a workshop today and discover how becoming a more positive co-parent can help both you and your child

ealing with divorce and sorting out separation is a dramatic, life-changing experience for everyone. There are times you may feel like you’re adrift, perhaps even drowning, in a sea of emotional turmoil as you try to navigate your way through this complex, challenging journey. And if you have children, the end of your intimate, co-parenting relationship can literally make you feel ‘halved’ because once you split up you’re no longer a part of that parenting ‘double act’ - you’re now a single parent. And that feels different emotionally - as though you’re somewhat diminished and your ‘other half’ is missing. When we lose something precious (a relationship), we experience a whole range of ‘losscycle’ emotions, like being on some awful roller coaster with its unpredictable and uncontrollable ups & downs. There will be times, as you recover from your separation (loss), when you feel overwhelmed by sadness, anger guilt, depression, etc. Now, more than ever, you need support, specialist guidance and someone to turn to. You may also notice that your children just can’t seem to get enough of you at a time when you’re finding it most difficult to function at your best. As they experience these ‘loss’ emotions too, they’re depending on you to be your strong, whole self. Especially as they learn how to adjust to being with only one parent at a time and adapt to

missing the other. They’ll find it harder to share you with siblings too so it often feels like you’re being stretched in different directions. Kids Come First is a unique support workshop for separated parents. Their childfocused support & learning workshop is packed with helpful guidance for effective, positive, separated coparenting. Their professional adult trainers with specialist experience in child counseling & family mediation offer you the right support & advice at the time you need it most, helping you cope better - so your children will too! If you feel that 1-2-1 relationship breakdown support would suit you better, Separation S.O.S. is a mindful mentoring program that steers you gently along the road to acceptance, helping you rediscover yourself and define your positive action plan for the future. Take the first step forward! Their workshops run in Hampton (TW12) but they also offer online help so get in touch with them, call Nicola today on 0778 9497275 or visit www.kidscomefirstuk.co.uk for info.

Extra Nicola Withycombe is co-founder of Kids Come First and works as a divorce/separation consultant and relationship mentor.

Parenting

I’ve got no friends! What to do when you feel alone or nobody likes you So many children who come to coaching feel alone and lost because they equate having lots of friends with how popular you are, as if somehow their self esteem depended on it.

T

hese days I love my own company, but as a child I remember feeling like I didn’t quite fit in or at times, questioned if people actually liked me. We all feel alone or like nobody gets it at times, so this is why so many children benefit from Smiley creative coaching workshops where they discover they are not alone. Hanging out and having fun with 9 other children who feel the same is super validating.

Today’s playground hierarchy echoes my unforgettable experience: The popular trendy kids who had all the latest gear and gadgets The studious geeky bunch who loved to learn and got top grades The sporty crew who were in the A team and won cups for the school With maturity, I can see now how these children were finding their identity in an accomplishment or something which gave them status. When you take that away; when they fail or their parents start saying no to their constant demands for new trainers or the latest phone, they are left feeling alone.

Does your child lack confidence in their ability or feel different?

They can feel comfortable in their own skin and shine like the star they are! Always Be Yourselfie is a 16-week online coaching programme that empowers your child to listen to their heart, strengthens emotional resilience and creates a growth mindset from the inside out. As a parent, you can be sure when you send them out into the big wide world they are happy, confident and safe. Go to www.smileyforlife.com/selfie for more information

I didn’t belong in a group but I used to float around being everybody’s friend. The truth was: I didn’t know myself so how could I possibly know what sort of friend would be a good fit for me? Relationships are like making the pieces of a jigsaw fit together to reveal your own unique blueprint. Here are my Smiley top 3 tips if you are feeling alone: 1. Remember that other people never determine our worth and not everybody will like us. Accept that and yourself. 2. Introverted people tend to prefer one to one connections over groups. Accept that your child may prefer not to have lots of friends (you may be an extrovert). 3. Being alone is not the same as feeling lonely. Some of us like to use

quiet time to recharge (see point 2). When we feel lonely we have lost that all important connection with ourselves. We have stopped being our own best friend and we are running around trying to find it from something outside of us. It’s inside of us. I recommend daily meditation (you could try a free App like Calm.com) to spend some time with the ‘friend’ that you miss the most – yourself! Try it and let me know how you get on. And if your child feels left out or is being bullied, you are more than welcome to join us for our next Friendship Know How Workshop is on. School News Thames Christian School Thames Christian College is a small independent secondary school for girls and boys in Battersea and is accessible from a wide area of London and the surrounding counties. Included in the Good Schools Guide, it is recognised for its strong Christian ethos. Small, well-behaved classes ensure that your child is known and valued while inspirational teaching develops independent learning and thinking. Pupils are characterised by their exceptional maturity which develops from a small relational environment. Pupils attain top grades across a wide range of subjects and have no difficulty in obtaining places at the sixth forms of their choice, including highly competitive independent and grammar schools. This summer 33% of all grades attained were A*/A (9-7) and 78%

of all grades were A*/C (9-4), significantly above the national average. In this rapidly changing world, pupils need a thorough and well-rounded education to succeed and enjoy life. Thames Christian is concerned with all aspects of its pupils’ lives: their behaviour; whether they show the right attitudes; how they respect others and relate to their friends; their achievements, not just academically, but also in the creative arts, sport and technology. It also offers a vibrant programme of cocurricular activities, competitions and trips, including an award-winning trip to Africa.

The Mall is an independent prep school in Twickenham for boys age 4+. They are nonselective at entry into Reception with assessments for entry into other year groups, including their intake into Year 3 (7+) where they increase from two to three forms. Boys go to a range of senior schools including Hampton, St Paul’s, KCS and Reed’s and from 2019 boys will leave when they reach the end of Year 6. They believe it is important for boys to develop interests in a

range of non-academic areas which can boost their confidence in all aspects of school life. A parent of one of our recent leavers told us, “You have put down such solid foundations in both an academic capacity and so many other areas too and as a parent, I could not have asked for more.” An extensive extra-curricular programme and wraparound care means boys can have breakfast at school at 7.30am and stay until 6.00pm. www.themallschool.org.uk

along with its family ethos, set it apart. Wraparound care is available from 7.30 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. not only during term time but during school holiday times too. The next Open Morning is on Wednesday 25th April 2018.

Babies have a real affinity with water and because they’ve spent 9 months floating in the womb, being in warm water feels much more familiar to them than being on dry land. However, this early confidence usually diminishes with time and can even turn to fear. That’s one of the main reasons why Water Babies believes in starting them young. But a baby never swims against their wishes, and lots of bonding, fun and socialising is always incorporated so you can be sure that a Water Baby is a happy baby. Parties Website Launch for Maisy’s Children’s Parties in March 2018

N WI

ty! r a aP

Maisy’s Children’s Parties was founded by Ann-Marie Christou in 2012 and is proud that a large part of their clients come from referrals and repeat bookings. Maisy’s are excited to be launching their new website in March 2018. Ann-Marie explains that the new website is now as current and up-to-date as possible with all that Maisy’s provides. As they’ve grown and developed so have their parties and they want their customers to be receiving the most up-to-date information as possible. They have structured the parties to make it easier for their customers to find what they need whether it’s a Classic, themed, Adventure or a Mini Disco Party they have something for everyone. Ann-Marie loves to get creative and with her years of experience will create a party that’s just right the birthday girl or boy and all their little guests! As part of their launch Maisy’s would like to invite Families Upon Thames readers an opportunity to take a look at their new website and enter their competition for a chance to win a full one hours party! For further details and to enter please visit www.maisys-childrensparties.co.uk/competition

Good Party Etiquette? Is there such a thing? By Andrew Campbell Whether you are throwing a party for your child or sending them off to their friend’s birthday celebration, finding your way around the do’s and don’ts of children’s birthday parties has become akin to navigating a war zone. Here we tackle a few of the thorny issues that seem to crop up every year. Who gets Invited? Your child has already been to three parties this year where the entire class was invited. But the thought of 30 small people bouncing off walls makes you break out in sweat. Remember “entire class” parties are your choice – you don’t have to give them just to keep other parents happy. The reality is that children WILL be happy with a small gathering so long as it feels special to them. Give invites to just their best friends and family and you’ll find the whole experience a whole lot easier. Be Subtle about Invitations Who is and isn’t invited to a party is guaranteed to cause playground ructions, so be tactful. Unless you’re inviting the whole class, don’t start handing invitations out as the kids are lining up to go into

For more information about any of their parties contact Ann-Marie via email info@maisys-childrens-parties.co.uk or call 0208 123 6484

March and April 18

22 • Kingston • Richmond • Brentford • Isleworth • Spelthorne • North Surrey - March/April 2018

school; you may end up being called in by the teacher who spent the first class consoling those not on the list. Be Sure to RSVP Planning a children’s party is stressful enough without having to chase people who haven’t replied. Replying promptly will earn you lots of gold stars with the party child’s parents, so just do it. And whatever you do, do NOT turn up on the day without RSVPing. Check Before you Take Siblings Don’t assume no one will mind if a younger or older sibling tags along. When the entertainer has a strict limit on numbers and the party parents have worked out exactly how many fairy cakes they need, added extras can cause a real headache. So make sure you check beforehand. Presents DEFINITELY Required As adults we may think that when it comes to parties, presence is better than presents. But as far as kids are concerned, it’s all about the gifts. Yes, we know the birthday girl doesn’t NEED another cheap and nasty Disney figurine that’ll last about 10 minutes, but turn up empty-handed at your peril. Party Bags – really? All kids love to leave events with mementoes but if you really don’t fancy party bags, then why not have a piñata instead? Buy some cute but cheap paper bags, and then the children can stuff them with whatever they grabbed from the piñata themselves. Thank-you Notes? This is obviously a personal choice but it’s a nice thing to do with your child once the chaos of their birthday has faded. Taking some quiet time to remember what gifts your child received and who came to the party can be a really fun activity and assures your child doesn’t take the whole experience for granted. Give a Contact Number Before you hotfoot it out of the door, make sure the party host has your contact number. If your child starts throwing up over their playmates and you’re incommunicado then you can bet they won’t be invited next year. And if you're the host, make sure you get phone details from all parents or you may be stuck with overwrought Olivia for a LOT longer than you bargained for.

Taking place on Thursday 29th March, this is the UK’s premier brain tumour research fundraising event. Don’t worry if you can’t make it that day, just choose another. Join in the fun as schools and families across the UK get involved to help raise funds for research into brain tumours. “Wear A Hat Day is a perfect opportunity to bring the whole school together and support this gamechanging charity.” – Mr Dan Gross, Deputy Head Curriculum, Beachborough School. It’s very easy to register online at www.wearahatday.org (it works really well on mobiles!) and then we can send out your fundraising pack. In the meantime, browse the other Wear A Hat Day pages for ideas and inspiration to make your event a hattastic fundraising success! In 2017, families and schools came together alongside other organisations and communities across the UK and helped raise over £300,000 to fund our vital research. With your help we can double this in 2018. We’re aiming for £600,000, enough to keep a group of researchers funded for a year. So please register for Wear A Hat Day 2018 today. Thank you. Together we will find a cure. www.wearahatday.org

S

pring is a wonderful time to visit WWT London Wetland Centre as new life is bursting out all around with babies, bugs and buds in abundance. But some of our ducklings have gone missing - can you help us find them? Bring your friends and family and follow our Easter GIANT duck trail around our nature reserve to discover where they are hiding. You’ll need all your special detective skills to track them. Look up as well as down, our ducks like to perch above you sometimes. They also love splashing around, so they won’t be far from the water. If you find them all you’ll win a prize! £1 per trail including a prize. As well as searching for our GIANT ducks, there’s also lots of Dusty’s ducky cousins to see, plus join our team for a spot of Pond Dipping or find out how to build a nest during one of our Wild Play sessions. www.wwt.org.uk
