Happenings starts 13th year MIKE MOONEY Family & MWR Marketing Chief

They say that time flies when you’re having fun, and so it has been with Happenings magazine that enters its Lucky 13th year of publication. There are still quite a few Korean employees around who can remember that first effort to put all MWR information between one cover. And there also a few Americans who were here at the time – acting DFMWR Jim Howell, who was Sports Director; Lodging manager Larry Gennacaro, who was Business Manager and, of course, myself. The original Happenings were called Leisure Informer. The name was changed about five years ago because we had a director who though that sounded “sneaky” (his words, not mine) and the original size was a 12-page 8½ by 11 broadsheet. The magazine was changed to its current size in the third year of publication following an extensive survey. Soldiers said they liked the smaller size since it could fit in a fatigue or field jacket pocket. From its inception, Happenings has been dedicated to keeping you informed about everything that’s Happening throughout Area III Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation programs. We are frequently asked to include non-FMWR news, which we cannot do except through paid advertising. That’s not our choice. It’s Army regulation. As we enter our 13th year of bringing you the Happenings, we continue to depend on you to let us know how we’re going. We are in the middle of our annual Lunar Customer Service Survey, and we hope you will take a few minutes to let us know your feelings. We don’t see our warts when we look in the mirror, and we depend on you to let us know about them before they become moles. Like Happenings, everything we do in Family & MWR is designed to take care of you and yours. Happy reading!

We Need Your Help

The Lunar New Year is almost here, and that means it’s time for the annual Area III Family & MWR Customer Service Survey Each year in conjunction with the Lunar New Year, Area III Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation conducts an extensive Customer Service Survey. Managers eagerly await each year’s survey results, searching for your comments and suggestions for what we can do to better serve you and yours. We depend on you to tell us about our warts before they turn into moles. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey. And then let us know you did so and go into the drawing for one of the pairs of stuffed Lunar Rabbits we’re giving away. Go to: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LunarRabbit

ledding

Winter Fun – Sledding in Korea

Lots of sledding hills available Just like Families in the United States, Korean Families take to the hills during the winter months with their plastic, medal or wooden sleds in tow to enjoy the thrills of the fast ride down and the long walk back to the top of the hill. And while just about any snow-covered hill will do, many of those hills are dotted with hidden bushes and rocks that can turn a ride into a nasty gash on the head. If you want to avoid those hidden hazards, Korea also has a lot of “professional” sledding parks where you can normally expect smooth gliding – except for the crowds that flock in large numbers on the weekend. Of course, unlike those “wild hills” you might pick, there’s a cost for the “pro parks.” Most of include sleds as well as helmets. The best are:  SEOUL LAND SANTA HILLS – Same place as the Zoo and Amusement Park. Open 1000-1700 daily. Admission Adult 18,000 won, Teenager 15,000 won, Children 13,000 won  EVERLAND – Open 1000-2200 daily. Adults 28,000 won, Children 21,000 won  GAPYEONG – Features artificial turf under the snow. Open 10001700 Daily. Admission 14 & older 7,000 won, 13 & under 5,000 won  KOREAN FOLK VILLAGE – Open 0900-1700 daily. Admission Adults 16,000 won; Teens 14,000 won and Children13,000 won. Includes the Folk Village and amusement park.

Korean Winter-time Fun

Skiing, Snowboarding big in Korea As any ground-pounder can tell you, walking in Korea is basically up, up, up. But as they say: Anything that goes up must come down. And that’s definitely the case with Korean mountains. Mix the combination of steep mountains, cold weather and snow together, and you have one of the finest collection of ski resorts found anywhere in the world. And since Korea is only about the size of Indiana, all of Korea’s outstanding ski slopes are just a short distance away. Winter sports have grown by leaps and bounds on the Korean peninsula. So much, in fact, that Pyeongchang on Korea’s East Coast is one the three finalists for the 2018 Winter Olympics, and Korea has even hosted a World Cup ski competition and the Winter Asian Games. All the resorts contain a mixture of slopes for both beginners and experienced skiers and, unlike the past, carry American sizes in rental equipment. Outdoor Rec will be hosting Ski trips almost every weekend throughout the winter, including several to Phoenix Hills – one of the sites already prepared for Korea’s Olympic bid. The Outdoor Rec trip includes roundtrip transportation as well as rental equipment. Check for its schedule of Winter Fun trips in this month’s Happenings and watch the Daily Garrison Notes. 19

Winter Fun - Ice Skating in Korea As might be expected, Korea – with the reigning Olympic Figure Skating Champion and dozens of gold medals in World Speed Skating competitions, ice skating is a popular sport throughout the peninsula. During the cold of January and February, ponds, creeks, lakes and rivers all over Korea develop a covering of ice. Like anywhere else, however, that ice can be thinner than you think and can be undercut by currents that makes the frozen water a dangerous place. Your best bet is a professionally operated Skating rink. And there is no shortage of Them during the winter. Some, like the skating rink at Lotte World or Korea University in Seoul are large and crowded – especially on the weekends. The Gwangwhamun Plaza in Seoul (where Outdoor Rec plans a trip for Jan. 9) features three rinks – the smallest of which is dedicated to ice sledding as pictured below. The same type of ice sledding is available at the Korean Folk Village. There are also rinks in Hangang Park (along the Han River) which are open whenever safe and at Mokdong near Subway Line 5, stop 521. Others are smaller, neighborhood rinks – some actually basketball courts or handball courts flooded and frozen for the winter. The Grand Hyatt Hotel in Itaewon actually freezes its outdoor pool for ice skating.

Taste of Korea

Cold weather means it’s Soup Time People who live in climates where it gets cold in the winter, battle the snow and wind with their own hot soups. And Koreans are no different. One of the more popular wintertime treats is Daenjang Chigae, also know as Korean Bean Paste Soup. This thick, fragrant soup (almost a stew) is a Korean comfort food during the cold winter months. Korean bean paste (daenjang) is similar to Japanese miso but is much more pungent and powerful. (The smell is sure to clear your sinuses). Daenjang chigae is hearty and can be made with almost any vegetables you have on hand, although you might need a trip to E-Mart or Korean grocery to find the daenjang (soybean paste). How do you make the soup? Prep Time: 10 minutes -- Cook Time: 20 minutes. Ingredients: -- 6 oz of sliced beef or shrimp, 3 cups soup stock (Korean beef or anchovy or a low sodium store-bought version), 1/2 chopped onion, 1 tsp finely chopped garlic, 1/2 zucchini, cut in half lengthwise and sliced, 1 small potato, cut into small chunks, 1 thinly sliced green chili pepper, 3 Tbsp daenjang (soybean paste), 1 Tbsp kochujang (chili pepper paste), 1 tsp chili pepper flakes (optional), 1 tsp minced garlic, 1 cake of tofu, cut into small chunks, 1 chopped scallion. Preparation: If using beef, then sautÊ beef until slightly browned. If using shrimp, then skip this step and just combine shrimp with vegetables. Add stock, onion, garlic, zucchini, potato, and pepper and bring to a boil over high heat. Add soybean paste, chili pepper paste, pepper flakes and tofu. When the soup begins boiling again, turn off heat and add chopped scallions .If you don't have homemade or store-bought stock, then you can use water but then increase the amount of soybean paste you use and salt to taste towards the end of cooking time. 23

Jegichagi a game for winter fun In a country where taekwondo and soccer compete for the title of the nation’s No. 1 sport, it should come as no surprise that one of the more popular and traditional winter games for kids involves the feet. Jegichagi is the name of that winter game, and it is deep in traditional and culture. The game itself is simple. Much like hacky sack played by American children, jegichagi involves keeping a jegi in the air without the use of the hands. Unlike the commercially made hacky sack, however, the jegi is made by wrapping small coins in cloth or paper. Many of the older Korean coins had a hole in the center, and these were the choice for the original jegi. Today, children use either the 100 or 500 won coin and either paper or cloth to make their toy. The finished product looks a lot like a shuttlecock used in badminton, but with loose wings. The ones for very small children (like the one pictured above) include a string. The object of jegichagi is to keep the jegi in the air, using nothing but the feet. It can be played solo or in a group. In order to preserve the tradition of the game, the Korean Education Ministry has made Jegichagi a required activity for third and fourth grade physical education courses.

Meet and Say good bye I remember when I first came Marketing. Martin who was first intern in Marketing, he introduced me to my supervisor Mike Mooney. When he told me what I would have to do in Marketing, I thought I am lucky to have such a good supervisor. When I started to work, I didn’t know how to make banners, flyers and posters. I just learned theories from books at my university. So it was difficult to handle the InDesign program. Fortunately, I met Kyra who was a editor, although she left Korea. She kindly taught me how to use the program. Jeff lent to me a book about how to use the Illustrator program. For a few days, I studied the programs. And then I started to make my first banner. I can’t forget it. Because I had to make it about encouraging people to do aerobic programs, I came up with a slogan. It was awesome. All the marketing team like it. However, I couldn’t use the slogan, because the word in slogan is prohibited. We changed the word to what we could use. Finally the banner was came out “View a New You”. Did you see it? I remember that when I worked on Halloween. Marketing had a booth giving out candy at Zoeckler field. I had never experienced Halloween. So I thought it was exciting, at first. When I gave something to kids, it was fun. A few hours later, I felt cold so I wanted to leave at Zoeclker field. I felt tired but I could still be frienldy with marketing team. I talked with Bill who is the new graphic design/ editor, marketing person, more than before. I had fun though it was hard. After I finish work I had dinner Ms. Chong and Mr.Yu. Time goes very fast. Already, my intership is done. I’m glad to meet good people and I really had a great time! I gained good friends. I will miss them. Although I am not accustomed to saying good bye, I have to do so. Have a Happy New Year. 27

Biggest Losers support program starts with Workshop January 8 Participants in the 2011 View a New You Biggest Losers Contest will be supported with a variety of activities throughout the three month contest, starting with a special Workshop from 0900-1200 Saturday, January 8, at the Super Gym. Aerobics instructors, personal trainers, health promotion and Super Gym personnel will be on hand, conducting health assessments, demonstrating different aerobic and fitness disciplines, showing people how to use the various machines found at the Super Gym and registering individuals for the Biggest Losers. “We will be hosting a variety of events over the three months of the contest,” said Area III Sports Director Lonnie Herring, “but, like any fitness program, most of it will be up to the individual participant. “This Workshop is designed to show everyone that we have and what we do to help them achieve their goals. Our Aerobics instructors and other participants are volunteering their time for this Workshop because we really care and want to make Humphreys a healthier community.” Although motivated by the Biggest Losers Contest, Herring said “we welcome and encourage everyone to come out and see what the Super Gym has to offer. This is the finest fitness facility in the Armed Forces, and we welcome the opportunity to show it off.”

View a New You with Biggest Losers 2011 The theme of the 2011 Biggest Losers Contest has been set, and the fourth annual Community Fitness Contest is set to start January 1. Biggest Losers – not to be confused with the popular television show, Biggest Loser -- is a combined effort of Area III Sports and Health Promotion The purpose of Biggest Losers is to help Area III Soldiers, Civilians and Family Members keep their New Year‟s Resolution to “get healthier.” The 2011 slogan, “View a New You,” is the brainchild of Marketing Intern Sue He-So, a Namsan-Seoul University student who spent the last six months working for Family & MWR Marketing. “It‟s perfect,” said Area III Sports Director Lonnie Herring. “The purpose of the Biggest Losers is to help people make a real change in their habits and to become a „New You‟ through fitness.” Biggest Losers is open to everyone – American and Korean alike – and doesn‟t cost a dime. You can enter as a team or as an individual. Winners are determined by the percentage of weight lost between entry and March 31. “Originally, Biggest Losers was limited to teams,” Herring said. “But, because of the nature of Humphreys, teams were being broken up because of transfers. So last year, we created the Individual category. We still encourage people to enter as a team because it‟s easier to stay with the program is you have a partner. But everyone will also be entered in the Individual category.” Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams and the top three individuals who are not members of one of the top three teams. In other words, nine individuals will be honored at the end of the contest. People can enter at the Super Gym starting New Year‟s Day. In order to enter, you should: 1. Pick a contest name for your team and yourself. 2. Fill out the entry form at the front desk. 3. Weigh in wearing shorts, T-shirt and socks. 4. Attend the Biggest Losers Kick-Off Workshop on January 8 5. Start making a New You.
