emorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, commemorates the men and women who died while serving in the American military. Memorial Day originated years after the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor the nation’s Civil War’s fallen by decorating their graves. It was first widely observed on 30 May 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former sailors and soldiers. On 5 May 1868, Logan declared in General Order No. 11 that: “The 30th of May, 1868, is designed for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city,
01 U.S. Memorial Day
village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.” During the first celebration of Decoration Day, 5,000 participants helped decorate the graves of more than 20,000 Union and Confederate Soldiers buried in the cemetery. In 1966, the federal government, under the direction of President Lyndon Johnson, declared Waterloo, N.Y., the official birthplace of Memorial Day because the two had made Memorial Day an annual, community-wide event during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of Soldiers with flowers and flags. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated the last Monday in May. USAG Yongsan Family and MWR will celebrate Memorial Day by hosting the 24th Annual PacificWide (PACWIDE) Men’s and Women’s Softball Tournament. Events will be held from Thursday, 22-26 May. Tournament registration will be ongoing until 14 May. Register with Bennie Jackson at the Collier Community Fitness Center or call DSN 7388608. The schedule will include a pre-social,
home run derby, softball tournament, awards presentation and tournament cook out. The Memorial Day 5KM Fun Run/Walk will commence in conjunction to the tournament on Saturday, 24 May. Registration will be held at 0800 and the run begin at 0900. Free t-shirts will be given to the first 200 patrons to finish the race plus 50 more t-shirts in children’s sizes. For more information on our USAG Yongsan Family and MWR events go to the USAG Yongsan, FMWR Facebook page.
