COACH’S CORNER “Fat turns into…what again?”

When it comes to healthy weight loss, it’s no secret that exercise is an all-important part. But have you ever wondered what actually happens to all the fat that you’re supposedly “burning?” Where does the weight go? Do we just sweat it out? Does it magically transform into muscle? If you ask most doctors, personal trainers, and fitness enthusiasts, you’ll get a common answer: HEAT. Stored fat will convert into energy released in the form of heat – end of story, right? Well, not exactly. Anyone who ever took 8th grade science understands how that theory violates the Law of Conservation of Mass. Matter will break down into simpler forms but it cannot just simply disappear and cease to exist. Even burnt wood retains its carbon mass, which is evident by the ash remains. So what exactly then is happening to fat when you’re huffing and puffing on that treadmill every week? The real answer may surprise you: you’re huffing and puffing it out! A recent, 2014 study published in the British Medical Journal by physicist Ruben Meerman has shed some light on the age-old question of “what does fat turn into?” Fat is composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms that are bound together by chemical bonds. When you exercise, a chemical reaction takes place where these atoms rearrange to form carbon dioxide and water (roughly 80/20 ratio). In other words, 80% of the fat you’re losing is actually being expelled through your lungs while you’re panting and gasping for air! This might help to explain why so many people have seen personal results and progress through various exercise programs that may seem very different from one another – they all put in EFFORT (and probably a good amount of huffing and puffing). So the next time you’re struggling to keep up with that instructor in spin class or feel like quitting during morning PT, literally remind yourself that every breathe you take is bringing you closer to your fitness goals. In case you’re curious, simply sitting in your office chair and breathing really fast will not trigger the same physiological response as exercise. Sorry. So close… -Coach Sim John Sim is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist and a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Strength & Conditioning Association. He is currently the Health & Fitness Program Manager for USAG Yongsan and can be reached at john.y.sim.naf@mail.mil. Fitness

Library Fun Facts

Celebrate

It is likely that the Roman Goddess of Love 'Aprilis' was honored when naming the month of April, but historians aren't totally sure of that factoid.

National Library Week 12-18 April 2015

Special Edition: April Fools’ Day Notable Facts & Pranks:

1. Taco Bell announced on April 1, 1996, that it was purchasing the Liberty Bell to help with the national debt and would rename it the Taco Liberty Bell. 2. In 1957, the BBC reported about "spaghetti crops" in Switzerland and many requested information on growing their own spaghetti trees, completely oblivious to the fact that it was an April Fools’ Joke. 3. Google is a big celebrator of the holiday, and in 2013 it unveiled Google Nose, a prank it called "the next scentsasion in search" because one could search aromas and sniff them, through his/her computer. 4. The BBC has a few other good pranks, including this elaborate video of the newly discovered flying penguin species from April 1, 2010, and in interviewing a professor claiming to have developed smell-o-vision in 1965. (What is it with the scent-related pranks?) 5. In 1998, fast food giant Burger King introduced a “Left-Handed Whopper” as an April Fools’ Day prank. The burger supposedly included the usual condiments in Burger King’s original Whopper sandwich, but these were “rotated 180 degrees” to suit left-handed customers. 6. In 2012, US Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney fell for an elaborate April Fools’ Day prank, where his aides told him “We didn’t get much of a turnout this morning.” The prank also involved Wisconsin congressman Paul Ryan and Senator Ron Johnson, both of whom have endorsed Romney.

This year’s theme is Unlimited Possibilities @your library April is National Poetry Month.

To celebrate the National Poetry Month, the Yongsan Library conducts the National Poetry Month Quiz contest from 3-12 April. Entry forms are at the Yongsan library. The drawing will be conducted on Tuesday, 13 April. 1st place: ear phone 2nd place: digital alarm clock
