August can be seen as one of the last months of summer and it’s also the month where all the kids go back to school. Yes, that’s right kids, it’s that time of the year again! It’s the time where many kids are waiting to see all their friends again while the others are dreading the thought of having to wake up early. The 2017-2018 school year important dates: 24 Aug - New Student Orientation - ES @ 0900, Cafeteria; MS @ 1100, Cafeteria; HS @ 1300, Auditorium 28 Aug - School Begins for PSCD, 1st - 12th Grades. All schools' times: 0800 - 1440 29 Aug - Early release every Tuesday, schools' times: 0800 - 1340 4 Sept - NO SCHOOL, Labor Day 5 Sept - School Begins for Kindergarten, start time: 0800 For military families, it can be difficult to settle down in new places because of always having to move; particularly, more difficult for children. Starting a new school can always be scary and frightening however, it’s something that all military children have to face. Fortunately, being a part of a military community can help the child adjust because they will soon realize that they’re not alone. The Child, Youth and Services (CYS) offer a large variety of extracurricular activities and clubs for children to grow, learn, get involved, and socialize. Parents can register their child at Parent Central and afterwards, their child will be eligible to participate in a majority of the CYS programs (depending on their age group). The child can hang out with friends, make new friends, play games, or go on field trips. A great program within CYS is the 2017 Summer Youth Sponsorship Program. This program is designed to welcome transitional children into the community. The program will offer tours and activities every Friday in August. By the time school starts, your child will feel like he/she has been living here for years! For more information on the 2017 Summer Youth Sponsorship Program, please call 736-5556. It may also be good to consider getting a physical and eye exam for your child before the new school year begins. If your child wants to participate in school sports, a signed release form may be required and getting this before school starts could save you and your family a ton of time. Another important factor to consider is generally healthy lunches. The National School Lunch Program is a federally assisted meal program that provides nutritionally balanced, low cost or free lunches to children for those families that qualify. Applications are available online only at https://freeandreducedapps.aafes.com/. For assistance please visit the local customer service desk at the Post Exchange. Please note that families interested in participating in the program must reapply at the start of every school to qualify for the program and to continue receiving benefits from the program. If you are PCSing this summer and have questions about K-12 schools at your next duty station, please contact the School Liaison Officer for assistance in easing the transition from one educational environment to the next. For all questions regarding educational issues and in/out processing, call 736-5556
