Coach’s Corner Soo Bahk Do

This month, I had a chance to sit down with Soo Bhak Do instructor, 8th Degree (Dan) Black Belt in Soobahk and has been teaching his craft to the Yongsan community for over 25 years. Master Ivanhoe Kim, who teaches his classes at Trent Warrior Resiliency Fitness Center. SIM: I’ve heard of Taekwondo and Karate and a lot of other martial arts, but I have no clue what Soobahk is. What sets it apart from other disciplines? Master Kim: Well, the actual name means “the art of fighting without weapons” but it’s actually not really a form of “fighting” the way you’re thinking about it.Unlike other popular martial arts, Soo Bahk Do is not intended to be a sport where points are awarded for “hits.” Any contact is designed to be purposeful and efficient, with a strict emphasis on disarming your opponent or attacker in order to end the conflict as soon as possible SIM: Interesting. So are you saying that you’d rather stop a fight than to continue one? Master Kim: Exactly. There’s not as much punching or kicking involved as compared to let’s say, Taekwondo. We focus on being defensive minded, relying heavily on the opponents momentum and initiative to counter with different parries, joint manipulations, and various locks. Master Kim: In a real-life situation, I would simply want to send a clear enough message so that we do not START a fight. Again, I can’t emphasize the fact that these techniques are designed to end conflict before it escalates further. SIM: Can you tell me about a time where you had to use your technique on someone? Master Kim: It’s funny you ask! Back in the 90’s when I was still teaching here, I was leaving Trent one day when I ran into two large soldiers blocking the exit. I politely asked them to move and to my surprise, they just snickered and didn’t budge! One of them turned to me and asked if I was an instructor. When I answered “yes”, he demanded that I show him a “move” or else he would not let me through. SIM: You’ve got to be kidding me. Master Kim: I was just as shocked! I declined several times before he laughed and jokingly flashed a quick punch, inches from my face. With nothing to lose, I asked him if he could do that again. When he did, I gently countered his punch and brought him to the ground. Then I left! SIM: Did you ever see them again? Master Kim: Why yes…they both showed up at my class the next day to be students! SIM: (laughing) I love it! Now, I can understand soldiers and strong guys wanting to learn this stuff, but what about women, children, and just regular people who aren’t that experienced in training? Will they be able to handle Soobahk? Master Kim: Absolutely. Sim, this can be for anyone because it doesn’t require tremendous strength or athleticism. I’ve trained retired veterans who are way past their physical prime and Soobahk has given them a new outlet for fitness. For children, it gives them an opportunity to channel their energy into something that requires focus, discipline, and patience. For women, I would say that the most significant benefit I’ve seen is how it develops self-confidence, self-esteem, and assertiveness, in addition to the practical advantages of staying fit and learning practical self-defense techniques. To learn more please email at SooBahkHome@Ymail.com, or call 736-3340. Interview conducted by John Sim is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist and a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Strength & Conditioning Association. He is currently the Health & Fitness Program Manager for USAG Yongsan and can be reached at john.y.sim.naf@mail.mil.
