xplore and indulge all five senses in Busan which by locals is called Pusan. Busan is to Korea as Miami is to Florida. Haeundae-gu is one of sixteen districts of Busan. Some of the most popular sites in Haeundae-gu include Haedong Yonggung (temple by the sea), great shopping, Jangsan Mountain, Busan Aquarium, and Dongbaekseom (Dongbaek Island) is located at the south end of Haeundae beach which offers some of Korea’s best seaside fishing. Set your sight on Haeundae Beach, near Haeundae station which is located in Haeundae-gu, is one of the three most famous beaches of Busan. Haeundae Beach is easy to reach from Seoul which either takes three hours by KTX Train and five hours by bus. Haeundae Beach is the most popular beach in South Korea among Koreans and Korea’s expat community. The beach has become famous from popular annual festivals such as the Busan International Film Festival and Haeundae Sand Festival. Korean television and movie productions have been filmed at Haeundae Beach. The views of Haeundae Beach are countless and may take numerous journeys there to see everything. The beach offers jet skis, surfing, yellow inflatable rings, deck chairs and umbrellas for rent. Due the spectacular fishing, there is no surprise Haeundae-gu offers an overwhelming selection of fresh seafood restaurants and Jagalchi Fish Market which offers some of the most delicious seafood in South Korea. Taste a selection of unique seafood indigenous to Asia such as the Uicinctus (look it upone word interesting) or try one of my favorite Korean dishes Sannakiji. Sannakiji is a small octopus cut into smaller pieces and eaten while the tentacles are still moving. The dish is to be eaten with care and chewed thoroughly and additional sesame oil for dipping is a must. Numerous Korean restaurants are present along the beach as well as cafes, fast food and an array of International restaurants offering tasty dining experiences such as the fish n chips at Wolf Hounds, seafood burgers at Sharky’s Bar and Grill and brunch at Breeze Burn’s. A perfect beach side snack to enjoy with friends is an

Tours

ice cream from the Seven Eleven or a pop pingsu from a café across from the beach. If you’re up for more adventure and beautiful views of the beach, take the trail to Jangsan Mountain. The hike takes from one to one and a half hours to reach the top. On the journey towards the mountain’s top there are streams, waterfalls and small temples along the way. Add culture to your repertoire by experiencing the beauty of Haedong Yonggungsa Temple. The temple is approximately a thirty minute taxi ride from the Haeundae Station. The temple is said to be one of the most beautiful temples in South Korea with a diverse personality depending on the temperaments of the sea. If the sea is calm the temple seems peaceful and serene but if the sea has aggressive waves and movement the temple takes on an eerie and emotional feel. If rain persists during your visit alternative activities include: Shinsegae (the world’s largest department store) includes two sets of movie theatres, a full-sized indoor hockey rink, a golf driving range, Spa Land, and has floors of food stands/small restaurants at both stores. Next to Shinsegae is the Busan Aquarium which is also located on the same side of the street as the beach. It offers up to 35,000 marine animals to view through large tanks or throughout 40 exhibits on display which include the ocean sunfish, zebra sharks, and the round-faced batfish and a touch tank for a close-up “hands on” look at a variety of sea creatures. Get even closer to the sea life by viewing the 3D movie, riding in a glass bottom boat or scuba diving inside the aquarium’s tank. The aquarium also offers a café with food and beverages. Save money, travel planning and celebrate Labor Day weekend by joining Moyer Outdoor Recreation for a trip to Haeundae Beach from 31 August to 2 September. The bus will depart from Moyer ODR at 0800 on 31 August. Maximum capacity of the tour is forty people and minimum capacity is 20 people. Cost, registration and refund deadlines will be posted on facebook.com/fmwryongsan.

T

he transition from summertime to school time can be very difficult for both children and parents. Now that summer is almost over, it‘s time to start preparing for the new school year. Before school even starts, you will need to get a list of supplies that your child(ren) may need. This list may range from crayons and glue sticks for kindergarteners to graphic calculators and college rule paper for seniors. Getting everything that your student needs for school as early as possible is important because in case an item gets added or you forgot to buy something on the list, you will always have more time to get it before school starts. For the new kids who are just moving to Korea and have never been to a military school, you may be curious as to what is so different about it. Just like any other school, you have your standard academic classes, after school programs, sports and just about anything that would be in an in-state public school. In the middle school and high school, there are A-days and B-days which means that you have four different classes everyday for 90 minutes each. For lunch, some kids go to one of the restaurants on South Post such as Burger King, Popeye’s, Pizza Hut, or Subway. Some kids may walk over to Charley’s, Starbucks, or

23 Back to School

Jamba Juice. Eating out everyday can be expensive and unhealthy so some students like to bring their own lunch and stay at school instead. During the 2012-2013 school year, Seoul American High School students were used as a test group for the use of laptops that were given to each individual student. Students of each grade were responsible for bringing their laptops to school every day, keeping it charged and maintaining it in a safe environment. At first, most students found that the laptops were very annoying because of the bulky case, the amount of websites that were blocked, or at the fact the battery didn’t last long. After getting adjusted to the new laptops, most students actually enjoyed having the laptops. Many students found that having most of their school work in one general location was very convenient. For children in grades 1 through 5, at Seoul American Elementary School, school begins promptly at 0740 and ends at 1410. For any new families who are just arriving to Seoul, there will be two orientations. One will be on Friday, 17 August at 1500 and the other will be held on Monday, 20 August at 1000. For other students, there will be a meet and greet on Friday,

24 August from 1330 to 1420. The meet and greet will give students the opportunity to meet their teachers and to see if any of their friends are in the same classes. The first day of school for students of grades 1 through 5, will be Monday, 27 August. The first day for kindergarteners will be on Tuesday, 4 September. On that same day, there will be a Tea and Tears Reception for parents of the little Kindergarteners at 0810 in the cafeteria. Finally, on Thursday, 13 September, students who are in Sure Starts will begin school. Seoul American Middle School students (grades 6-8) will be in school from 0840 to 1520. For new students, there will be an Orientation with breakfast at 0900 in the cafeteria and the first day of school will be Monday, 26 August. On Thursday, 29 August students will start the new school year with a Back to School Dance at 1600 in the Cafeteria. For Seoul American High School students (grades 9-12), school will start at 0840 and end at 1520. During the month of September, all schools will be closed on Mondays for furlough days. If you want to get your child more involved in the

Yongsan community, come to Parent Central and register them for FMWR’s Child, Youth & School Services (CYSS). CYSS offers full-day, half-day and before and after school child care programs, team sports programs, middle school and teen programs, and school support services. At CYSS, your child will have the opportunity to meet other military kids, hang out with friends, play games, meet people, and participate in a lot of fun activities. For more information, contact Parent Central today at DSN 736-3015/5036. The Department of Pediatrics is offering school physical appointments. Physicals are 2013 Army Birthday 5KM Fun Run T-Shirt recommended or may be mandatory for high school students, children playing organized sports, children with special health needs, and CYSS participants. They are recommending not waiting until the end of the summer to make an appointment. Make an appointment by calling DSN 737-CARE (2273).

It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of new changes: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while.
